Comparing Okami to Zelda is Unfair... to Zelda.

It took a few months of playing it in small chunks but I finally beat Okami. I encourage everybody out there to play this game, it was much longer than I thought it was going to be but it was definitely worth it. The ending was incredible and I know that I'm still probably on a high from finishing the game but it definitely is one of the best endings I've seen. I don't want to spoil anything for the large amount of people who haven't played this game yet, so I won't be talking about what happens. I just want to encourage you to play it and get through the entire thing.

Now that I've had time to reflect I started thinking about what I was thinking when I got the game. A lot of people were comparing this game to Zelda and I admit that I was doing the same for the first 10 hours of the game. I remember thinking that it was almost exactley like Zelda but not as good. But as soon as I started to think this game was following the same basic formula that all of the Zelda games followed, it took turns. Lets face it, the story in Zelda games is pretty much the same for each game and it follows a very linear path. The story in Okami was epic. It just kept on getting bigger and bigger as I went through the game. It seriously felt like I was playing two or three games while I was getting through the game. I almost felt exhasted whenever I thought I was near the end to only find out that a whole new chapter of the story was starting. Trust me, I never even once thought about comparing it to Zelda for the last 25 hours of the game.

Another thing that separates it from Zelda are the characters. Starting with Ocarina of Time some of the minor characters were given some personality and some weired little quirks. But Link has always remained emotionless and has never had any dialog. I think Link is one of the greatest characters in video games but I feel like we know so little about him. In Okami, everybody has there own personality and that includes Amaterasu and his tiny companion Issun. Now Amaterasu, or Ammy, never had any dialog because she was a wolf, but Issun could easily speak for the both of them, and the connection that's formed between them is one of the core parts of the storyline. I always found myself amused by what Issun would say to the ladies and what the ladies would say back. Even the personality of the enemies would show through every now and then.

Now that I've finished the game I would love to see a sequel, but I have a feeling that may never happen. I can only hope that maybe Zelda will be willing to change it's storyline formula a bit and use Okami as a guideline. I'm one of the biggest Zelda fans and I find myself seeing all of it's flaws when comparing it to Okami. Just think of it this way, the most successful Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, was the best because the story had twists and had an epic feeling, the characters were given personality, and Link was given a companion much like Issun who gave the main character a voice. There are just certain things that make a game great.

Holy Crap, Where Have I Been?

Well I kind of dissapeared for a while and I bet no one even remembers me. I had so much on my mind and so many things to do over the past few months I just haven't given much thought to being active on this site or any others. But now that schools out for me, I'm bored once again and decided to update a few things. Now I can't promise that I'll be active from now on since I will be starting a full time job next week, but I hope I can update my profile every now and then.

I want to apologize to bigmouthkid and the anything union since I haven't been active since December. I'm glad to see the union is still up and running and going strong. Even if I'm not too active on this site I'll still try to post. I don't know if anyone will be reading this but I still wanted to update things anyway.

Here is a list of all of the games that I've gotten since I last posted on my profile, proving that even though I haven't been active on this site I'm still gaming.

    Brain Age

    New Super Mario Bros.

    Sonic Rush

    Yoshi's Island DS

    Zelda: Minish Cap

Zelda: A link to the past

    Elite Beat Agents

    Okami

    Happy Birthday to Me!

It's two weeks before Christmas and I don't have to wait for something to hold me over. It's my birthday and I finally got my first new system since I got my PS2. It's nothing big, but it is the Nintendo DS and as I wait for it to charge I can't help but love the way it looks.

I got one game for it now and probably more later for Christmas. Mario Kart DS will be perfect for me since I'll be able to pick it up and play for short or long periods of time. This being finals week, I won't have a whole lot of time to play so I need a game to be flexible. And I'm praying that my internet router will be compatible so I can play it online.

Other than that I don't really have much to say. I just wanted to tell everyone it's my birthday.
