Funny hot things... and opinions can change due to the actions of another.

For quite a while now, everytime I log on and surf over to my corner of Gamespot and read my very very old blog post. I'm reminded of two things...

First... how damn busy I have been, and how pitiful it is that I have not updated my little blog.

Second... how easily sinners can become saints, and loosers can become winners...

After Nintentdo announced the name of the "Revolution" was the Wii... I was in shock. Every ounce of marketing experience, schooling, research, etc, screamed that this was an impossibly bad name in the west. One I feared they could not bounce back from. Equaly as bad as when Chevy sent the Nova to Mexico** (Details below).

But the skys parted thanks to Sony. Their attitude and misfortune has turned most every critic to sling their arrows almost exclusively in that direction.

    Why?

Arogance, check. (that's the most sinful)

Broken promices, check. (launch pushed back, global launch not happening, 2 million at launch is now 500,000 at launch, and I could go on for days)

I'll stop there. I was a pour kid who worked and saved to buy my games, now I'm an adult who has the income to own each console at launch. Got the last 3 on launch day, yes including a XBOX 360. But Launch day I'm skipping the PS3 this time.

I am getting a Wii even though I'm worried about the graphics (yes I'm a whore, how purty the pictures means something to me, deal with it), especialy since the best thing that has been said is Madden 07 looked better than the XBOX... yes the first XBOX... and the name is just dumb.

But Nintendo has my curiosity again, the promice of game play, and no one can deny their first party games are most always great.

I'm not saying I won't own a PS3 sooner or later... But it will not be 2006 for me. I've bought 5 PS2's personaly due to the drives breaking over and over again. Some how with all the mistakes, delays, and arrogance... I wonder, will this be the Trogin Horse that sneaks BlueRay into our homes, or BetaMax DVD... and will the games realy be all that, or will all the misteps catch up.

    Time will tell........

** Chevy made a car called the Nova... Fine in the US, but they didn't Think of the Cultural and language differences when they exported it just a little bit sound to Mexico. Ya see Nova means "NO GO" in spansh.... It is one of the legendary exapmles of why you always look at the regonal interpitation of any product name BEFORE announcement and launch.

Nintendo, my once favorite... further out of touch.

In the beginning... well ok, it was Magnivox, Atari, Intelevision, and Coleco...

But it was Nintendo that resparked video games. Starting with the NES at home, everyone wanted to play. Nintendo was cool.

Then Nintendo met Sony, friends at first, then bitter rivals. Nintendo's demand to control manufacturing processes, and refusal to leave the cart both helped them defeat themselves.

Then the Gamecube. A great console, minimized in the west (US mostly) by looking to much like a toy. Gamers were growing up, and the tipical gamer was not 12-14 anymore. The Nintendo games rocked, but people (myself included) didn't  buy the console, even if they longed to play some of those great games.

    Now here comes the "Wii"

Just as I was getting excited about Nintendo again... Just as I was planing to buy. Just as I thought Nintendo realy had a winner.

    Nope

Just looking like a toy held the Gamecube back from selling well, never mind the great games. In marketing the truth is perception is reality.

Perception so far is a full on laughing at the name. Teasing of the name. And lockeroom humor about it. A low price could actualy hurt it now. If you are ashamed to say it, why would you buy it. I know I will not.

Not because I'm so childish, or to cool to own something named the same as the action of a child peeing. But because I think the a name like this will stop sales, which will stop development of games, which means no matter how low priced it is... I would be waisting my money

This name alone could kill the console. No fanboy reteric can change that.

    And that is truly tragic.
