My Take on the Election
Well, Senator Obama is now President Elect Obama. Until January, when he becomes President Obama. Then again, who didn't see that coming? Regardless of the countless polls taken by both respected institutions and trivial sites (polls are all meaningless anyway), the spirit of the nation has indicated for quite some time that the majority of the people would be looking to the left side of the ticket to take on the nation's ever-increasing problems for the next 4 years.
Now then, I missed out on this election by a few months, as I don't turn 18 until May. I know who I would have voted for, though I won't say. I think that, while it's good for people to have strong opinions, people don't have to force them down other people's throats.
I will say this though: I like Obama in some ways, just as I like McCain in some ways. Obama is very well-spoken, and his eloquence will be a welcome change to what's been going on the last 8 years (Note: I think President Bush got a raw deal in a lot of ways, and people don't give him as much credit as he deserves. He wasn't always such a bad speaker, look at his speeches before he was elected). I definitely like Obama as a person, and his promises of change are refreshing, though I can't say I agree with all of his policies and plans. Oh, and putting ads in video games was just silly. "Oh, well Obama's name was in GTA, so I'll vote for him." A sidenote: he is NOT a Muslim, contrary to what 23% of us Texans believe. The stupid actions of a handful of terrorists have really given them a bad name. I am a Christian, though I think that it shouldn't really matter that much what a person's religious beliefs are. Our country was founded on Christian principles, but also on the idea of separation of church and state.
McCain, I believe, was also a fine candidate for president, though his campaign could have been so much better. I think he resorted to lower tactics than Obama many times, which is a major turn-off to me. Plus, he stood Letterman up!
Anyway, His experience would have been invaluable.
I think it was absolutely ridiculous that so many people focused on his age. MCCAIN IS 72. Ronald Reagan was 70 when he was elected, he survived an assassination attempt, was reelected, and by the end of his second term he was 78. He lived to be 90. So there have been older people in office, and there have been younger people die in office. One of our YOUNGEST presidents, the great JFK, unfortunately died in his 40s. Now this was something completely unforeseen and definitely tragic, but the point is, anything can happen; something like that should not determine one's vote.
Now, for the race issue. I think it's fantastic that the United States of America have put aside race barriers to elect the president. But the election isn't about electing a black president, or a white president. Or a woman or a man, for that matter. It's about electing the president best suited for the job. I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel honored to live in a country where that decision is left up to the people.
But finally, the election is over! No more mudslinging, personal attacks, or frivolous spending. And the late-night comics can get back to making fun of celebrities, like they do best. Until 2012, that is.- Posted Nov 6, 2008 1:01 pm PT
