    Thoughts on my second Modern Warfare 2 playthrough

    As I mentioned in my last blog, I've already beaten Modern Warfare 2's single player campaign (on normal) and have already put in more than 10 hours into multiplayer. But those darn people at Infinity Ward decided that the bulk of Modern Warfare 2's achievements would be unlocked by playing the campaign on veteran difficulty, so that's what I'm up to now. I just completed the oil rig mission around 10 minutes ago and I'm simply amazed at how easy veteren difficulty is in this game. If you look at my gamercard, you might notice that I have all 1000 points in Call of Duty 4 which I earned mainly by completing single player on veteran. But it was no easy task. Between the infinitly spawning enemies and the long time it takes for your health to recover, it was a nearly infuriating task to beat the game. But Modern Warfare 2 is much, and I mean much easier to complete. This is mainly due to the two must frustrating factors of CoD 4's veteran mode being removed. Slow health recovery and infinitly spawning enemies. The number of enemy troops you see on-screen is the number that's there. You're no longer forced to charge at the enemy to progress through the level. Simply eliminate everyone you see and you can move on with the mission. In addition to this, your health restores in only a fraction of the time it used to. So in conclusion, you should try the game on veteran difficulty for those extra gamerscore points. Have fun!

    MW2 Impressions: Part 1

    In case you couldn't tell by my previous blogs, I've been waiting for Modern Warfare 2 as long as I can remember so I knew the moment I put the disc in my console that I would be playing nothing else for a long time. And boy was I right! Since I was lucky enough to have this past Friday off from school, i got enough time to complete the campaign and make significant progress in both Spec Ops and multiplayer. So here are my impressions for all three modes of play!

    Campaign - Short and sweet. That's the best way to describe the single-player experience of Modern Warfare 2. It takes place 5 years after the events of Call of Duty 4 with a new villain trying to start WWIII and it's up to you once again to stop him. While I won't spoil anything, I will tell you that there are lots of twists and turns in the story that feel almost unnecessary and make the plot a bit confusing at times. The missions feel very different from each other so there's always motivation to keep playing. Whether you're clearing an enemy-infested school in Afghanistan, or rescuing hostages on an oil rig, or chasing an arms dealer in Rio, you always feel like your in the middle of the action and everything has a movie feel to it that makes the campaign nearly as entertaining as the other modes. The only complaint I have though is the length as it feels even shorter than Call of Duty 4.

    Spec Ops - When I first tried this mode, I was like "this is alright," but the more I played it, the better it got. Spec Ops is a standalone mode consisting of bite-sized missions that you can play by yourself or with a buddy (splitscreen or online) and it's much more entertaining than you would expect. The missions feel just as diverse, if not more diverse than single player and the mission's length make them easy to jump in and out of. Play this mode the minute you complete the campaign!

    Multiplayer - Here we are! The 1000 pound gorilla mode of Modern Warfare 2. There's no doubt that you'll spend the bulk of your time playing multiplayer. Despite how many new features there are, it still feels like Call of Duty 4 in a good way. The controlls are identical and the most of the modes play out the same way. Customization is deeper than ever with more weapons, attachments, perks, and killstreaks. All of the maps feel excellent (Favela being my favorite) and they're easy to get used to, yet still feel tactical at the same time. The new perks and secondary weapons give your custom classes a bit more variety over Call of Duty 4's and there's no doubt that you will love multiplayer.

    So to conclude this blog let me say one thing... BUY THIS GAME!!! Have a nice day!

    Today's the Day!

    What up Gamespot? Long time no see! But just as I promised, I would start blogging again on 11/10/09. And as you would expect, I got Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2! And boy oh boy is it fun! I got to play around 4 multiplayer matches (team deathmatch) and two single player levels and there were all great. The multiplayer feels comfortingly similar to Call of Duty 4 yet feels supremely exotic and different at the same time. I forget the exact level I got to but I did manage to unlock Create-A-Class which is a good start. The single player also started smooth (no spoilers) and I can tell it's going to be a blast. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try Spec-Ops at all but I do have a half day on Thursday and all of Friday off to play the game so I'll get to know soon enough. And possibly best of all, I got a brand new 46 in Samsung HDTV to play it on! While I can't play games in 1080p (my TV supports it but there's too much HDTV lag), I can still run smoothly on 720p which is crisp enough for me and I can see a major difference. We also signed up to get more than 50 HD channels so we'll be able to see everything perfectly. Seriously, HD makes all the difference. On a closing note, I'm severely disapointed that Gamespot couldn't post their MW2 review today (at the moment at least), but I pretty much read and watch IGN reviews first anyways. So yes, my blogs are back for good and expect Modern Warfare 2 impressions in the not-too-distant future. So long and have fun with Modern Warfare 2!

    No Blogs Until...

    November 10th. I'm not leaving Gamespot or anything but I really have NOTHING to talk about. Everything in my life is the same at the moment and I'm playing the same games so you won't be seeing any blogs until November 10th. Why that day you may ask? Because that's the day Modern Warfare 2 comes out. That's the only game I plan on buying with my own money this fall. But don't worry, once that game comes out, expect lots of impressions (I mean lots) and I'll be willing to the play the game online with anyone (that means you guys). I'll still be on Xbox Live on Fridays and weekends so feel free to play with me there. See you on November 10th and happy gaming!

    I can smell the rain...

    Good evening everybody! I figured it was time to do another blog for everyone so here we go. Tomorrow is my fourth week of school and things are still going well. My classes aren't too hard and my grades are good so I'm not stressed over anything at the moment. In terms of games, I've been playing a lot of Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War lately in anticipation for Modern Warfare 2. I'm getting much closer to reaching level 65 in World at War (62 at the moment) and I really want to reach 65 before November 10th so I'm trying to squeeze as much time into that game as I can, even though I keep going back to Call of Duty 4 because it's simply a better game.

    The Beatles: Rock Band came out last week and that is another game that's on my wishlist. The only thing is that I don't really want to spend $60 on it so I'll probably end up putting it on my Christmas list instead. The only other game that I want is Splinter Cell: Conviction. You guys probably know that I'm a HUGE Splinter Cell fan and the long delays have made me want to go back to playing the previous entries in the series but I don't own any of them anymore except for Chaos Theory which I have as an Xbox Original but I don't have the hard drive space for it so I have to turn to Youtube videos to satisfy me.     More School and a Busted Computer

    Life goes on as they say. As I said in my last blog, I'm really enjoying my high school (secondary school) classes. We got to make these cool sketches with nothing but a pencil. And I can't get over the awesome fact that I don't have to take a Bible class the entire year because it would screw up my schedule! History class was a bit amusing when I was falling asleep (still not used to school hours) and the teacher threw a pen at my face. He does that everyone though in a joking way so it was kinda funny.

    The main computer that I use at home is having some serious hard drive issues so we're calling Dell this weekend to get a new hard drive installed. Without going into too much detail, the computer had the blue screen of death about a year-and-a-half ago and some guy came out to install a new drive. But for some reason, he "switched" most of the memory onto the D-drive instead of the C-drive. So the C-Drive ended up having only 20 GB of space while D-drive had over 200 GB. The problem is that the computer still identifies the C-drive as the main hard drive and keeps bugging me (and my parents) about low disc space and it got to the critical point of where there was no space left in the drive (which can be fatal to a pc). So why didn't I just delete some stuff here and there? Because the only thing installed on the C-drive is the operating system. So we're simply getting a new drive at this point. So here I am typing on my dad's loud laptop. The internet connection is good though so I'm not missing out on much and I'll still have access to Xbox Live. Labor Day Weekend is coming up and I'm not planning on doing much beyond doing some well-deserved relaxation. See you later!

    School... First Impressions

    As I mentioned in my last blog, I've started yet another year of school. I've been doing this for 11 years now and I'll honestly say that it gets a bit better every year (for high school). Freshman year is somewhat difficult because you're adjusting to a different type of school. Sophomore year is a bit better because you're starting to understand high school. And by Junior year, there's no more adjusting and everything seems to fit into place. My schedule is English, Geometry, US History, Physics, Art, Study Hall, and Band. What I really like is that I don't have any really challenging classes after lunch (Art, Study Hall, and Band). That's all I wanted to say. Have a good day!

    Top 5 Game Controllers + TWITTER

    Since today is my last day of summer vacation, I thought it would be nice to post one last summer blog. So here we go - my top five game controllers!

    5. Wii Controller

    When the Wii controller was first shown to the public, it seemed revolutionary. The ability to play a game by simply mimicking motions was brilliant and people started to realize that this would open up a new door to casual gamers as well as people who didn't play games at all. Nintendo is the master at making game controllers feel like they were made just for the player. The buttons don't feel too lose or too tight and the d-pad doesn't make your thumb hurt after 20 minutes. If there's anything wrong with the Wii controller, it would be the sensitivity issues. If you're too close to the tv, the controller won't pick anything up. If you're too far from the tv, the same exact thing will happen. And the motion sensor bar that you put on top of the tv is designed to fall off and annoy players. but other than that, the Wii controller is one of the next big leaps in gamingkind.

    4. Duelshock 2 (PS2 era)

    While I never owned any Playstation console (besides psp), I still liked the ps2's controller. While it wasn't nearly as comfortable as the Gamecube or Xbox, the button and analog stick layout felt perfectly natural. In fact, the duelshock bears high resemblance to the Nintendo 64 controller with two analog sticks instead of one. A d-pad on the left-hand side, four buttons on the right-hand side, and perfectly located triggers. It's a good thing that Sony ditched the boomerang style controllers for the ps3 and stuck with the good stuff.

    3. Nintendo 64 Controller

    Like the Wiimote, the Nintendo 64 controller was quite revolutionary for its time. And why you may ask? One word: analog. Before the N64, all controllers used a d-pad for control, but the N64 introduced the analog controller which was basically a small joystick that made platforming games like Super Mario 64 feel perfect. The controller may have had a weird shape that let you hold it in three different ways, but it was far from unorthodox.

    2. Gamecube Controller

    The Gamecube was the console that I had spent the most time playing (until now) and I can still remember how great the controller felt. Two analog sticks, a Gameboy Advance style d-pad, confortable face buttons, and pressure sensitive triggers made this the ultimate controller in many ways. But if there's one complaint, it would be the c-stick. While the left-hand analog stick felt great, the c-stick was small and somewhat clumsy to use, especially in first-person shooters. I was fortunate enough to buy a third-party wireless controller that had a better-feeling c-stick. But the Gamecube controller's design was simply unbeatable.

    1. Xbox 360 Controller

    As of this year, I've been playing Xbox 360 just as long as Gamecube, and those four years with the Xbox 360 controller made this one get on the top of the list. The controller's shape feels perfect, the button are comfy, the triggers are excellent for racing and shooting games, both analog sticks feel perfect, and the big fat guide button feels satisfying to press. The d-pad isn't very nice, but very few games make you use it constantly so it's not much of a problem. I hope that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to innovate in controller technology. And what will we see? Only time will tell.

    So... Boring

    (Yawns) What's up everyone? Once again, its been awhile since I've blogged on here due to the lack of anything going on. It's that time of year where no good games are released and there's simply nothing to do. This is my last full week of summer vacation before I start school on Wednesday next week. I'm honestly fine with starting again because I'm bored out of my mind and I want to see my friends again. Due to the economy's state, we're only getting two new students in my grade (11) this year. The cool thing is one of them went to my elementary school and the other is an exchange student from France so it'll be nice to see some new faces. In gaming news, I've managed to complete several of the impossible challenges in Rock Band 2, including the impossible guitar challenge, the impossible bass challenge, and both of the impossible marathon challenges. Surprisingly, none of them were that difficult. The only song that really challenges me is "Visions" by Abnormality which is a horrible song.

    Another thing I'm enjoying right now is the new Xbox update. The avatar marketplace is a nice addition and I got to purchase a new Quicksilver hat (check out my gamerpic) with the 90 remaining Microsoft points that I had left. The idea of games on demand is also cool but Microsoft seemed to forget about the people with 20 GB hard drives that simply won't fit those massive games. And to top it off, I love how you can invite people to parties with one button press as well as the ability to eject discs from the Xbox. It's been nice talking to you! Now I'm going to re-install Firefox because it's been acting incredibly glichly the last few days. So long!

    Paradise Lost

    What's up internet? I got another blog for your entertainment. The game Modern Warfare 2 has been on my mind a lot lately and I can't stop thinking about it! I've watched the E3 demo several times now and it simply looks awesome! Better weather effects, more weapons, and a new co-op special forces mode make this look like game of the year. The one feature I hope they put in is Al Qaeda Zombies! Take the the insanely popular Nazi Zombies and put it into modern times with Al Qaeda terrorists and your in for one heck of a time. It would be amazing! IGN also posted an image of what they think is the offical Modern Warfare 2 box art. The strange thing is that it still says Call of Duty. It still looks pretty cool though. See it here.

    I've been watching the first season of Lost this past week and I now understand why people are obsessed with it! Simply because it's great! The characters are interesting and likable (except for Sawyer) and there's always a sense of mystery going on. I'm going to rent the next two dvds next week.

    And in gaming news, I've completed several Fallout 3 quests and have unlocked several achievements. The game has yet to get boring. I can simply play this game forever. And to finish my blog, here are the first 24 official Guitar Hero 5 songs! Have fun!

    The Everything Blog!

    Hey everyone! Short time no see I guess. I have quite a bit to of (hopefully) exciting things to talk about today so here we go.

    So I spent the last few days last week doing daytrips with my parents were we went to the beach and some other places. I didn't find them to be very fun but it's no big deal.

    I've been playing a lot of Resident Evil 5 and Fallout 3 lately to satisfy my hunger for games. I managed to beat and rescue Jill from Wesker (who is officially one of my favorite villains now), and I'm now partway through the ship level. The game is still relatively easy on normal difficulty but I have no plans on playing the harder modes without all of the upgraded weapons with infinite ammo.

    As for Fallout 3, I'm just completing various quests (the most recent being Blood Ties) and discovering new locations to get more xp as well as the explorer achievement. It's a pretty easy job though, considering that I have explorer perk which lets me view all the locations (even the undiscovered ones).

    I forget to mention to you guys that I got two TV converter boxes a few weeks ago after the switch to digital broadcasting (America only) and these new boxes give us some on-demand features which a really cool. They're dozens of free movies to watch including The Terminator (1) and Gran Torino (which I've already seen). Pretty nice to have free on-demand when there's nothing else to do.

    Lastly, I really want to change my haircut. I've had the same stupid bowl-cut since seventh grade and I really want something different and better looking. Do you have any suggestions? Watch one of my video blogs to see what I look like for help. I kinda want a Julian Casablancas - style haircut (Google image him), but I'm not totally sure if it would work on me. I've also considered some semi-emo haircut but I promise that I'M NOT EMO. Hahaha! Have a nice day!

    Meet the Xbox Live Stereotypes! (2009 Edition)

    Two years ago, I did a blog about all of the annoying stereotypes you see on Xbox Live. And with it being two years later, I figured it would be a good idea to make a brand new 2009 edition, so here you go! (Check out the old, 2007 edition here).

    Note - Please don't take this too seriously if you fall into one of these stereotypes. This is meant to entertain you, not piss you off. Think of this as a "mocumentary."

    Stereotype # 1 - The Average Joe

    This is the most common male gamer you encounter on Xbox Live. They can be from any race, religion, country, galaxy, and their age averages around 24. You'll find them in just about every game out there and they're probably the least annoying person out there. Most of them tend to swear a bit, but not as much as the pottymouth.

    Stereotype # 2 - The Pottymouth

    While it might depend on what game genres you play, the pottymouth is the second most common Xbox Live stereotype. They're generally cl@$$fied as being the same species as the average joe but with one major difference. The ability to swear for hours upon end without getting tired or their mouth stinging in pain. They try to use anything as an excuse to rain down their colorful vocabulary on the poor innocent 10 year olds who are trying to play a fun game of Need for Speed. Their favorite words include ____, ____, _____, ___, and most of all - ______________________________________!!! These are the people you don't hang out with in real life.

    Stereotype # 3 - The Creep

    I personally find creeps to be the most annoying people on Xbox Live. Between their weird voices, the weird sounds they make, and the weird comments they say, they just make me hit the mute button. Creeps generally suck at games and mainly play Xbox Live to show other people how weird they are. Their voices sound like a cross between someone with congestion and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Some creeps also swear a lot which forms the stereotype hybrid - Creepermouths.

    Stereotype # 4 - The Kid

    The kid is basically a younger version of the average joe. They play video games for entertainment and play just about every game genre in existence and can be any race , religion, ect. The main thing that sets kids aside from average joes is their voice. Naturally, their voice is higher pitched than the average joe. Just keep in mind that the kid can sound like anything from a mouse to a mole rat. Some poorly-raised kids have nasty swearing habits which forms the stereotype hybrid - the Pottykid.

    Stereotype # 5 - The DJ

    Three years ago, the DJ was a thriving Xbox Live stereotype. Playing various forms of music through his microphone to please (or most likely, annoy) his fellow gamers. They usually asked their teammates what kind of music they wanted to listen to which was usually answered with "shut up!" But in 2009, the DJ is an endangered species. You rarely hear DJs playing Lil Wayne or Lady Gaga through their mics which to most people is a good thing. You mostly find them playing older games that were released no more than a year after the Xbox 360 launch. But will the DJs ever be able to come back from near-extinction. Only the Xbox Live community will control that. (And most of us already know the answer.)

    And now some news about me! I played quite a bit of Resident Evil 5 today and I've been making great progress! I'm a bit surprised at how easy the game is. It's challenging enough to keep you awake, but easy enough to where your couch won't be wet with sweat (or anything else). I also got to level 39 in Call of Duty: World at War!     I just learned that the band's lead guitarist Garrett Zablocki is the cousin of a person who goes to my school which is pretty cool. I know that their song Can't Be Saved is a bonus song in Guitar Hero III so it's cool to know that I'm playing the same part he is! Just thought you guys would like to know.

    Moving on, I got to level 34 in World at War and I'm dying to unlock the awesome STG-44 which seems to be one of the best guns in the game! My favorite map is Dome because its small size makes machine gun kills super easy! My least favorite map is Downfall because it's too big and people rely on tanks to win. In fact, I've never bothered using tanks because they're too slow and make me feel like a sitting duck. World at War has yet to get boring though so I'm going to keep playing for a long time to come.

    Birthday!

    So unless you've been living under a rock for the last 17 years, you should know that today's my birthday. Okay just kidding. Most of you probably didn't know that I turn 17 today! You know what that means, I can legally purchase M-rated games and see R-rated movies by myself! I don't have any form of ID though. So as you know, Michael Jackson died yesterday. I know most people under 21 think of him as a child molester, but if you look beyond his problems, he's an amazing person. Not many people are musical geniuses, but he is! I don't know a lot of his songs beyond the hits but he's still a pretty cool singer. In gaming news, I downloaded the map pack 1 for World at War. The zombie map Verruckt is INSANE. (Which is actually what Verruckt means in German). The zombies are much harder to kill and they swarm you like bees. The map was clearly designed for co-op and not single player. I also played on two of the three multiplayer maps Knee Deep and Nightfire. Both of these maps are great fun, but I wish I could have seen the other map. I've gotten to level 31 and I'm dying to unlock the STG-44 which is one of the best weapons in the game (in my opinion). I also find it funny how one of the maps is called Nightfire which reminds me of James Bond 007: Nightfire which was a great game back in its day. Hope you guys have fun!

    Something Big is Coming!

    I've been thinking about doing some sort of video series for everyone here on Gamespot and it took me quite a while to think of an idea, but I finally got one. It's called Pros & Cons. P&Cs is a video series where I review games specifically about what's good and bad about them (the game's pros and cons). Each game is going to be a game that has many good and bad things going for it. The first episode is going to feature Far Cry 2 and I'm about 75% done with the episode. It will have a commentary with gameplay footage! Some other games I've considered doing are Guitar Hero: World Tour and Counter Strike: Source. If there are any games you would like for me to do in later episodes, please tell me! Just keep in mind that I'm only doing games I own (so check my owned games list for your picks). D_West and I played a lot of Nazi Zombies yesterday and we got pretty darn good. I believe we got to level ten on Nacht der Untoten (Night of the Undead). My birthday is this Friday and I'm going out with my family to a Cuban restaurant on Saturday to celebrate! Have a great day!

    Blood, Sweat, and Tears

    This past week has been almost entirely about gaming besides some chores here and there. I finally started playing Resident Evil 5 today and it is simply amazing. The gameplay is intense without making you fill a bucket with sweat. The controls (in my humble opinion) are actually quite good once you get the hang of them. Shooting enemies is still harder than in a traditional shooter but you get used to it over time. I just got to the marshlands level (right after the jeep/turret level) and the story has been captivating and is quite immersing. I've never played any other Resident Evil games before (although I know a decent amount about the series) but you really don't need to know anything about the series to enjoy RE5. I'm also glad that the game isn't scary like the previous games in the series so I won't be lying in bed at 3:00 am jumping at the slightest sound. I also downloaded and started playing through the Broken Steel expansion to Fallout 3. I managed to beat the game shortly after downloading it and I'm currently fighting in the Presidenial metro to get to Adam's Air Force Base. It's been pretty fun although Bethesda should have simply put this in the game from the start. It feels like it was meant to be with the full game. It also gets a little bit frustrating at certain points (lots of traveling and occasional overwhelming odds) but is great other than that. The only thing that has slightly hurt my gaming experience is my glasses. I went to the eye doctor yesterday and I'm getting a new prescription so I had to give them my glasses which I won't get back for at least a week. I play my games in a gaming chair four feet from the TV so I can see decently although my glasses (which I always use while playing) make it a bit clearer. Oh well, have a great weekend and fathers day! And my birthday is a week from today! Goodbye and have fun!

    Games and Movies: It Doesn't Get Better Than That!

    So now that I'm on Summer vacation (got out last Thursday), I have lots of free time and I've been watching lots of movies and finally started to play Xbox again today. Two newer movies I rented recently were Taken and Gran Torino. Taken is about a former CIA agent (played by Irish actor Liam Neeson) who's daughter gets kidnapped by slave traders while visiting Paris. But the slavers chose the wrong person to kidnap because dad's not happy. He chases them throughout Paris and simply a fun movie to watch. The fight scenes are great without being graphically violent. The only thing I don't like about the movie is that Liam takes out every bad guy with only a few punches. There's only one person in the entire movie who takes him more than five seconds to kill. But with that minor complaint aside, it's a great film. Go rent it, you won't regret it!

    The second movie I watched was Gran Torino starring the awesome Clint Eastwood. Gran Torino is about a racist old man who lives in run-down Detroit and tries to keep his house up as his neighborhood goes bad. He especially hates his new Asian neighbors, but he soon learns to raise a teenage boy like a son in a rough neighborhood. I know this wasn't the best description of the movie but it is simply amazing. It's easily one of the best movies I've seen in a long time and is filled with so many likable characters. Simply a great movie that proves that Clint Eastwood can even play a grumpy old man. (And no, this isn't Up.)

    So as I said, I finally was allowed to start playing Xbox again so I started the campaign mode in Call of Duty: World at War. Believe it or not, I actually beat the campaign in one sitting. I wasn't even trying to rush through it but I simply wanted to experience it all. The campaign's length was good and almost all of the missions felt memorable (although there were two or three missions that actually were forgettable.) And what surprised me the most was how addictive Nazi Zombies was. I played at least ten games and got to round eight a few times. It's fun and provides a good challenge. Great game!

    I also played a little Fallout 3 after I was "Call of Dutyed out." I managed to complete Operation Anchorage and unlocked all of the cool new weapons. Pretty fun DLC. Have a good week everyone!
