PlayStation 3 has 1% return rate

PlayStation 3 has 1% return rate

Added on 04/07/2007.While retailers reckon that 33% of 360 owners are plagued with the Red Ring of Death (or 3 Red Lights of Doom), only 1% of PS3 owners are returning faulty consoles.

An EB games associate said to Ripten: "Failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies. Most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3."

The 360, although selling well, is becoming (in)famous for not only giving up the ghost after the warranty expires, but also scratching discs if not being careful. The PS3 has not been plagued with any recurring problems, and the retailers' figures seem to support this.

So the PS3 may be more expensive, but at least you will only have to buy one.

    Stay tuned.

    Blu-ray heading to 360

    Rumor: Blu-ray heading to 360

Added on 13/05/2007.During a recent interview in Japan, Peter Moore told reporters that Blu-ray could be heading to 360.

IT Media was informed by Moore that the 360 will see a Blu-ray add on, similar the to the HD-DVD add-on, before Christmas. The drive will give 360 owners the power of viewing Blu-ray disc movies much like the PS3. No announcement was made on whether or not Blu-ray games will be playable, but given Microsoft's stance on HD-DVD games, playable Blu-ray titles are highly unlikely.

The only question is, can the 360 support Blu-ray as well as the PS3? Sony and Microsoft each adopted either Blu-ray and HD-DVD respectively, in hopes of creating a new standard format. Moore said that the hopes of HD-DVD becoming the standard are now "bleak."

The PS3 was completely built around Blu-ray which gave the format the upper hand over HD-DVD in delivering high definition movies to as many homes as possible. Moore insisted that "Microsoft is giving the consumers the most cutting edge technology out there and in this moment in time Blu-Ray is that."

He added "that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since it uses an external drive."

The question remains: can the 360 repeat the PS3's success as a Blu-ray player, especially as the Premium Xbox 360 has no HDMI output.

Stay tuned to PSU for more info.

Guitar Hero now playable on PS3

Guitar Hero now playable on PS3

Added on 12/05/2007.With backwards compatability issues nearly a moot point for Japanese and North American PS3 owners, one series desperately needed to make the jump to PS3. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 haven't been playable on the system. When starting up the game, you're prompted to press the PS button. Seeing as the Guitar Hero controller doesn't have a PS button, it wasn't really playable on a PlayStation 3, even using a PS2/PS3 controller adapter.

The Pelican PS2/PS3 adaptor finally emulates that PS button, allowing for your favorite guitar-smashing series to be playable on the PS3. The $15 adaptor provides perfect compatability with the first installment, but Guitar Hero 2 won't have those hammer on/offs that everyone loves so much.

Nothing perfect, but this comes pretty close.
