Theme: [Light Selected] To Dark»
3May 13

So I spent the past two months chipping away on this idea, and we put it up on the site today.

I wanna thanks Clare, Tyler, Lucy, Dave and Alexander for taking the time to talk to me. There are some really good discussions going on over on the video page  if anybody is interested.

I'd love to write a full blog about all this, but frankly this project has been really draining. Perhaps in a few weeks!

How can the readheaded girl be depressed, she is hot!Depression is hell I have been there in that dark place and still am sometimes, gaming helps you get your mind of negative things, escape from reality wich can be a bad thing if you get used to it,its hard getting yourself out there again, even making conversation with the opposite sex is hard...

@zvirsky you wonder why girls don't talk to you, yet you make sexist comments about the girl in the video.

@majoras_wrath @zvirsky Who said anything about girls not talking to me and it wasnt my intention to be sexist i just give credit where credit is due, didnt mean to offend anybody...

I loved the interview. Seems like it is in Ireland. I didn't know Irish people can be depressed, too. They just look so happy. Just kiddin, but I love the liveliness of the Irish.

I just got around to watching the video, and it was an interesting watch.

Depression is a tricky issue.  I don't think it really goes hand-in-hand with gaming, but I think it's possible that people who are depressed may be more attracted to playing games, for various reasons.

I don't think gaming really helps depression, but it cheers a person up for a little bit.  It's like watching a TV show or reading a book, it gives you some instant gratification and, if it's a really good game, you'll probably think about it a lot afterwards.  But as far as helping a person's depression, they just don't.  It can't really change the world.

Playing games alone doesn't make a person more depressed than playing games with others.  But playing games with some people who enjoy the game as much as you do can be fun and different.

I just think it's rare for people who play MMOs or games with online multiplayer to keep in contact and become good friends.  Maybe only certain kinds of people are friendly enough to make friends and keep friends that way.  I also don't think it's a complete substitute for a friend that you can hang out with and talk to in person.  But I'm not convinced that having good friends and people who care will be enough to cure a person's depression.

A lot of things can cause a person to be depressed, even people who are physically healthy and have a lot to be happy about.  I can only begin to imagine how much more difficult and depressing life is for people who have more odds going against them.

They're useful for physical pain as well. :P Anyway, great concept!

Watched it this morning. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

The piece on the chick with bowel cancer was especially thought-provoking. Losing both her parents to it, struggling with it herself, and having her living conditions and social life flipped upside down.

I agree with the statement the guy made near the end regarding gaming being a coping mechanism but not a cure.

@nate1222 Yea that's supposed to be the central message. Get help basically.

Clare is one of the most interesting people I've ever met. That interview is mental. She goes on about paedophilia in PlayStation Home and what it's like being a 43 year old female gamer who owns at COD. Trying to figure out a way of using the rest of it. She's a mate now too, we went for lunch (without food) last week. One of life's awesome people.

i'm going to post my comment from the video thread here as well:

"What a great video. I really appreciate how deep this video goes, and in less than 20 minutes. Tackling multiple sides of how gaming may affect depression and giving this topic the honest treatment that it deserves is rather refreshing.

While I can't say that I've ever *truly* suffered from depression, I know that gaming has helped me through some really rough times in my life where the only place I could find any joy at all was in my games. Then again, I've also known people for whom gaming has stunted them from living their lives. It really is interesting how different we all are, and I appreciate how you actually went into this concept in the video. Games can be one tool used on the road to recovery from depression, but there is no substitute for supplementing them with other tools, such as help from doctors, counselors, friends and family.

I hope that we can rid ourselves of this embarrassment and stigma associated with depression so that people are more inclined to get the help we need. Videos like this one are key to reaching a wider audience and helping to achieve this goal.

Well done, sir."

it's great when someone like you or @tempertress, who are both in the public eye, speak so openly about your own issues to help others. it is understandably draining, but hopefully it has been worthwhile to you, especially after all of the supportive comments your video has received :)

@Xerialstraz Awesome, glad to hear it. And no worries, you know what it's like. Talking about it is therapy in it's own right.

Great video, Danny, it makes all the right points and is well balanced. Thanks for delving into such a difficult issue to tackle, it was seriously worth it :)

It's a nice video Danny. Kudos for making it and all but I honestly come to gamespot to not think about the miseries of my life. Repress, repress, repress. That's my only method.

If I pretend to have fun for long enough and not take everything so seriously then maybe I'll eventually start having fun by accident.

I'll watch any video of yours though (just no more pigeons please ;)
