Cokebeard's Journal

i have never reached for or for that matter had to find the brightness feature on my laptop before. hell, i even looked around my vicinity where i'm sitting for my sunglasses. it's just too.... blue.... and not for me.

is this techinically "electric blue"? cause when i imagine "electric blue" this is what i think of.

    ...ick.

man i am happy as a clam that the olympics are over and i can go back to my regular scheduled viewing habits. all the networks suck for wimping out when they could have throttled nbc everynight.

goodbye threshold. you were easily the most action packed new sci-fi show this season. i thought you were good enough to make the full season, but it seems that majority of the viewers are not ready for you yet. i enjoyed watching ya while you were here and i'm sad to see ya go. you will be missed.

goodbye reunion. you were not usually something that i watch. you pulled me in with your interesting way of telling your story one year at a time. it's too bad that you got hosed by the presidential address and the baseball layoff and going heads up with csi. i wish i could have known your outcome over a full season. best wishes.

i thought it was a good idea and a crazy twist when it first started to happen. like when doyle died in the episode Hero on Angel. that was the first time i can remember where something was planned out like that from the start. when that happened i knew right there that anything could happen and would. i can understand killing of a cast member that chooses to leave a show. some producers just don't want you crawling back after a while and thinking you can slink back into your old job when things didn't go as expected. this has now grown into a fad and like all good things, it has grown out of control. now if you don't kill somebody off, you aren't keeping up with the Jones'. it was a crazy, out of the box idea in the beginning. now i just wait for someone to bite it in everything i watch.

    Just one question for now.

How does Saw II and The Legend of Zorro make 60mil and 30mil respectfully in 2 weeks and Serenity not pull in 25mil in 6?

    Please discuss amongst yourselves.

    #5 - Celebrity Poker Showdown
i can't stop myself from stopping every time i run by it. i've been a dave foley fan for years and phil gordon is actually not that bad as a poker announcer. sometimes it sucks, but when you get people like hank azaria and colin quinn, it can be pretty entertaining.

#4 - Cartoon Network and Boomerang
let's just say at my age, the norm is not in cartoons. but i grew up on them and i'm not going to stop now. mainly it's adult swim and comic book adaptations like justice league, the tick, sea lab 2021, etc. boomerang has the classics like the original johnny quest, laff-olympics, and such. i love those.

    #3 - Good Eats
this one is about as obscure as they come. i like to cook and alton brand is really good in this. it's on at a good time for me to watch and not miss anything. the most entertaining cooking show i have seen since that one from a long time ago with that old cajun chef you could barely understand.

    #2 - The Soup
one of the funniest things on tv. i liked it better with john henson when it was talk soup, but not by much. i hate reality tv and this is a great way for me to get out my frustrations. i'll watch the same episode throughout the entire week until a new one comes on and then all over again.

    #1 - Survivor
i just got done saying how much i hate reality tv, but i watch this religiously. this was the first, so i don't hold anything against it. it's all the other crap that i hate like the simple life, everything on vh-1, everything on e!(except for the soup), and actually everything else in that genre. to me, survivor is more of a game show than anything else. at least that's what i tell myself to make me feel better. i think it would be fun to go to an exotic locale and try to outwit people for million bucks. i just straight up like watching it.

i know they're different for everyone but those are mine and like 'em or hate 'em, i can't stop myself.

can't have this and not start with Lost. it had crazy cliffhangers and not the what have you been doing for the last 3 month garbage you tend to have to sift through. it picked right back up by adding a couple new cast members. and having another group of survivors on the other side of the island. i really like hurley and it was nice to see his back story built up more after waiting 2/3 to 3/4 of last season to learn anything about him. i really have no idea where there going to go with this bunker plot line. especially with that computer. i did think it was a little out there that the guy in the bunker was from jack's past or anyones past for that matter. it's an interesting ride, but i am less interested now than last year. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

and now a whole slew of newbies. i'll start with the remake. which one is that, you ask? yeah they're all pretty much remakes. i was referring to Night Stalker. i don't know much about the original series so there will be no comparisons here. it's so x-filesish that i have a tough time getting by it. the believer and the unbeliever left to coincide with the crazy world around them. if i can get past that, the show is pretty entertaining. until last night that is. would have been better suited for a 2 parter than trying to stuff all that into 45 minutes. it came across as pushed on you instead of letting it develop. like perry and the whole i figure it out that it's a secret society and i might be in one. like a wise man once told me "any sci-fi on tv is better than none". but that doesn't fit here since this is good. but is will fit one soon. thus far i give it a 8 out of 10.

don't be afraid to go in the water, but do be afraid of poor acting and writing in Surface. i wanted this to be good, but the cgi just can't blind me to the plot holes and absolutely terrible acting. lake bell was terrific in boston legal, but left her s.a.g. card at home when she showed up the set of this steamy pile. it doesn't stop there. the 2 boys hiding the lizard ard horrible, but a crap ton better than the hacks they got to play the sister and her cronies. the crazy guy who lost his brother started good, but took a nice little nose dive himself. on a side note it is nice to see Boris "The Bullet Dodger" in something new since batman begins. i still watch it because there's nothing else on and also for the "twins". i give this a curve saving 5.5 out of 10.

now with the first of 2 aliens attack shows, Invasion. i've been getting ripped up and down for liking this. some people think it is too slow. well they're wrong. i like a good story to develop. i don't need a bunch of cgi garbage poured into my eyes like some. the only thing i'm worried about is this build up and the delivery sucks. then all the critics would be right. i don't like that, cause i want to be right. here there is low cgi but good acting. the little girl that plays rose is wonderful. eddie cibrian does a fine job being a ranger and most importantly a father. and really can you think of anyone other than christopher walkin that naturally looks as creepy as william fichtner. this is a good show that has to contend with l&o and csi:ny for its ratings. thus far i give it a 8 out of 10.

and it's buddy Threshold. i caught this late. i actually only saw the last 30 minutes of the 2 hour premiere and subsequent episodes. i am very intrigued by this and love the cast. i'm not a trekkie but i was a star trek fan and am happy to see brent spiner in this. my favorite character is ramsey. i can't believe his name is peter dinklage, how f&%#ing cruel. this seems to be a close ended idea. i can't wait to see how they plan to get around this. i hope this isn't just going to be them hunting a different guy down every week. it probably won't. thus far i give it a 8 out of 10.

i think i'll start with and oldie but a goodie, The Simpsons. i am tired of hearing how it isn't as good as it used to be. everything is that way - that first time you saw your girl/guy, the first time you took your new car out for a drive, that first hit of smack(sorry, that last one may be just about me). take it for what it is,...entertainment for a half an hour. the first few episodes have been just that. i wish fox didn't have the craptastic baseball playoffs so i could see a couple more episodes. i never have to worry about them, i'm a tigers fan. Yeah, Tigers '84. so shut it and stop acting like they owe you something, like 16 years isn't enough. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

now to the show that makes you "f'in crryyyyy", Family Guy. i've never been a huge fan like i am with the simpsons, but this show is flippin' hilarious. stewie and brian are genius together. although i think that the simpsons has outshined them to this point the season. i can't wait for more episodes. stupid baseball. thus far i give it a 8 out of 10.

then to seth's other pet project, American Dad. this is probably the animated show that is still in production that i like the least. it's funny and all but i after family guy, it can be a let down. stan can be a little annoying. my favorite character is roger with the second being the fish, klaus. the minor characters in this are easily the most compelling. i hope the rumors of klaus leaving the bowl are true. i hope i'm not shoving my foot in my mouth because i missed the last episode and most of the one before it. this may have already happened. it needs more roger. thus far i give it a 7 out of 10.

time for a couple new ones. i'll start with The War at Home. the only reason i watch this is because i followed what fox wanted me to do...catch it after the simpsons. i really don't care. there is nothing on any way. it's cliched and formulaic. it's nothing special other than 30 minutes of filler to family guy or l&o:ci, which ever one i feel like catching. i can't see this making it past this season at the most. thus far i give it 6.5 out of 10.

and now time for the creme de la creme, My Name is Earl. this is the best comedy show i've seen in a long, long time. i'm so happy they don't have those god awful laugh tracks. jason lee is absolutely brilliant in this. he has the perfect look to this. the casting is wonderful. ethan suplee has lost a lot of weight and is great as the witless but genuine brother. jamie pressley i super, reprising a similar role in a movie aptly titled "poor white trash". eddie steeples as darnell has really shined here, as has nadine velazquez with her of catalina. the writing is superb. it has the nice hippie message of karma. the crazy little adventures that earl and randy get into just keep getting better an better. it is one show that absolutely can't wait to see the next episode. it's the break out hit of the new season. thus far i give it a 9.5 out of 10.

i really like Las Vegas. it's an easy going, quirky show that started out as program about the inner workings of the security of a casino into just a show about a casino. good thing they scrapped the first title. i believe it was "casino eye" if i'm not mistaken. i was skeptical about the addition of lara flynn boyle at first as i guess many may have been. she fit's in well because the character is not really impeding on the other for camera time. maybe it's the conspiracy theorist in me, but i find it odd that we never see mary's boyfriend. sam is just beautiful. in fact all the women here are. kate moss, i mean lara flynn boyle included. the beginning of this season so far has been just a campy romp so far, getting the pieces back together. it has also been very entertaining. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

and back by popular demand with 5 extra episodes this season, Boston Legal. pound for pound the most entertaining thing on network tv today. denny and alan are an absolute hoot togather. i cannot think of a better tandem around. they work off each other like they been doing this for a decade. i'm not big on the junior associates, though. they just get under my skin a bit. the loss of monica potter and rona mitra will be felt. hopefully the addition of julie bowen can absorb some of that. she's stunning these days. sorry back to denny and alan. those two in canada and in the canadian courthouse was just too much. i think i hurt myself. interested to see where this case against betty white's character is going. the black widow case was excellent. she so killed him. heather locklear pulls off those roles so well. Thus far i give it a curve breaking 10 out of 10.

now to a usually compelling piece of television brilliance, Alias. unfortunately, i'm not too happy with the season thus far. although, last nights episode was easily the best thus far. i don't know about this whole sydney pregnancy. it can't be could if this is last season. then losing vaughn, weiss, and nadia. and sloan in the hoosegow making all his appearence through bars. the addition of rachel nichols and balthazar getty should be ok for me. i like both actors. the addition of amy acker as a badass is fine by me. i'm taking the beginning of this season as an interesting premiere for a new show and giving it that kind of patience. hopefully it can integrate quickly and move towards more pressing issue like who's in that in stasis. thus far i give it a 7.5 out of 10.

straight from the joint chiefs themselves, E-Ring. i really enjoy this take on the inner workings of the pentagon. some have been giving dennis hopper a hard time because they like him in "quirky" roles. yep, they're dumb. he is completely wonderful here. e-ring has the classic formula of hard nose boss, scrappy assistant, shoot by the hip new guy. they of course, are together after some goal. here trying to keep there department running and well funded while trying to stop terrorism and the such worldwide. on paper it looks stupid, but that can't be further from the truth. it is well acted and very entertaining. i like this mostly because it shows and hopefully will show more of the seedy side of it all. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

for all those with friends lost and forgotten i give you Reunion. i initially liked this because of the concept behind it. i'm a fan of 24 and thought this was another nice way to tell a story. unfortunately, because of baseball playoffs, it hasn't been on in weeks and i can barely remember what was going on. i know that the baseball hiatus is going to take a casualty and this might be it. it's hard to tell a years worth of story into 45 min. just like in 24 trying to get 60min into 45 for the opposite reason. i remember being intrigued by it a couple of weeks ago. hopefully fox puts on a marketing campaign to get these shows rolling again. thus far i give it a 7.5 out of 10.

there is not enough i can say about NCIS. i am huge fan and think it is one of he most compelling shows out there. the interactions between the cast are great. they really do come across like a family. tony might give mcgee a hard time, but, like a big bro, won't let anyone else. it was hard to see the passing of sasha alexander's character kate. her brother-sister relationship with tony was fun and endearing. much the same with gibbs and abby's father-daughter relationship. it's going to be interesting to see how ziva will fit in. i thought she would be the opposite as kate. that's how casting works. the addition of lauren holly seemed a little to much. how many dynamics do you need? this show already has a lot. mark harmon is great as gibbs. i've been a fan of his for some time. so thus far this season i give it a 9 out of 10.

now for the big kid on the block, CSI. most watched, so i've been told. well the bands back together and looking to make sweet music once again. look out lady's, warwick's married and his new bride was revealed last night.(i don't know if we've seen her before, but it's the first time this season.) interesting on how this will play with catherine for the next 18 or so episodes. speaking of, talk about someone who gets more beautiful every year. nick of course now has a small deal with claustrophobia as can be expected. this will undoubtedly come up this season. not much has been done with sarah or greg. last night was an ok heaven's gate knock off. thus far this season i give it a 7.5 out of 10.

how about now we go for the middle child, CSI:Miami. i have always liked this one more than the original. it started with the casting of rory cochran. i liked his movies. this season has been a very good. there's a new hook about something that happened in new york. i haven't been paying attention to the show's casting. is horatio's sister-in-law coming back this season? i should probably check that. but i do miss seeing her every week(she's easy on the eyes). the show has been typical but very exciting. there have been only a few things this year that irked me. namely the arresting of diablo in the hospital room all by himself. if he had time to get there, then he had time to get her completely out of danger with a simple phone call. and cops not being able to shot a perp who is standing in the open while they are behind cover and then getting shot themselves. thus far this season i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

let's go for the token missing persons show, Without a Trace. this season has really started out kinda slow as far as i'm concerned. i'm already getting tired of martins constant whining about his cane and being treated like a kid. buck up pal you were shot. take the pampering, i would. i'd be lying if i said i didn't have a school yard crush on poppy montgomery. so anything i say will be tainted. so i'll leave it at that. jack is jack and probably won't grow much this season with the addition of roselynn sanchez. not enough time in the hour. i don't know about her. i've only seen i episode so i'll leave the jury out. nice to see vivian back up and in the swing of things. the episodes have been very entertaining and it's nice to see them finding them alive. how crazy was that one with the kid and bomb. can't believe he pulled the trigger and like jack said will have to live with it. great episode. thus far i give it 8.5 out of 10.

now with something new to me, Numb3rs. i just started watching this because sg,sg:a, and bsg are on hiatus until january. i remember the concept from last year but i thought it would fall on it's bum. like usual, i'm wrong again. it's ok. i had a lot of math in college so i thought i would like this. granted i missed a season so i don't know how this usually goes. but even from what i've seen. it would be a little to over the top for most people. like figuring out the algorithm for the car locks or making a scale model of an estate using cereal boxes and also not being able to read a blueprint right. they got the classic young good looking genius and the eccentric older genius(who by the way is the best on this show from what i've seen) and the smart dad to help the cop(i know it's his brother). i'll give this show until january to win me over. by win i mean i might tivo while i watch bsg. thus far i give it 7 out of 10.

i think i'll start with Law&Order:Criminal Intent. i'm happy with the addition of chris noth for the 13 or so episodes this season. i'm a l&o guy and the character logan is second only to lenny. I've been a fan of this show because i'm a d,onofrio fan also. early on i like it for the logan factor. the stories have been good but nothing to write home about. this is a typical l&o season and that's ok by me. thus far i give it an 8 out of 10.

now big brother. Law&Order has been again typical. i really like fontana. if i can't have lenny and logan, then ed and fontana are the next best thing. I don't know why fontana gets such a bad rap. the newest ADA is finally starting to grow on me. i really didn't care for here last season. maybe the fact that i know she's here to stay has eased me up on this. she needs, though, to find a niche for herself i.e. abby was a hardass, sabrina very liberal, that kind a thing. arthur branch is a great character. that's about as real a representation of a DA your gonna find, juggling justice and re-election. nothing really new here. thus far i give it a 8 out of 10 as well.

keeping with the l&o theme, i'll next tackle jill hennessy's Crossing Jordan. i really like the beginning of this season. woody is way better a little darker than playing the goofy dork. the show is way more interesting with jordan and woody apart. the episodes have been wonderful. the crossovers with las vegas are great. i liked the bit with the bikers. it showed them in a good light. loved the last episode with jordan getting caught in the mine. i am starting to get tired of her constant disregard for her superiors. if this wasn't a tv show, she'd be dead for sure. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

now for a couple of newbies. Bones splashed on to the scene and a nice splash it made. i knew david could act. it's nice to see him prove it to everyone else. i will not lie. i primarily tuned in because of him. i'm glad i did. i find this to be pretty interesting and the little sexual tension between him and “bones” is entertaining. the supporting cast of nerds are all quirky and fun as is the norm these days. i'm just glad they have a conspiracy theorist in the mix. i like those characters. i hate the 3D model thing. it's no better than the chess game between R2 and chewie on the falcon in episode 4. all in all it's fresh and new and i like it. thus far i give it a 8.5 out of 10.

finally someone has added the token profiling show that hasn't been on in awhile, Criminal Minds. it's ok. giddeon is entertaining, but will run the risk of being too smart this season i think, much like grissom on csi. His interactions with the spencer come across as warm and heartfelt, and that's never a bad thing. Spencer's inadequacies with real world and pop culture are humorous and not over done. This show needs now to start developing the rest of the cast for this to make it next season, as i here it was just given a full season. Nice job, that's a tough time slot they're in. thus far this season i give it a 8 out of 10.

go see serentity. then see it again. then one more time. now tell 10 people to see it. then tell those 10 people to tell 10 more people. not seeing this is one of the biggest blunders you can make.

a lot did and did nots happened this summer. fox did premiere The Inside and did not give it it's chance. Just another good program torpedoed for a really lame reality show. so you think you can dance has to be the worst thing on the tube. It's not i know. if it's part of the reason the inside went down then it's right up there. if fox had a soul, it was sold loooooong ago.

of course nice to see fastlane on tv again. kudos to court tv and g4. odd places for fastlane, but i ain't complaining.

sci-fi did premiere their friday line up again. thank you so much. at least there's something good on for half the summer.

sci-fi also started showing firefly. good for you. hopefully it does well so sci-fi see's what it did wrong by not picking it up the first time around and won't make that mistake again when given the opportunity with another good show.

    good luck serenity.

family guy made an appearance. always nice to see that. by the way, i actually like american dad. not many people i talk to do. also looking forward to the simpsons again. it's getting knocked around by viewers, but i still really enjoy it. last sunday was hilarious.

i almost forgot about the tick. love the tick. again a hearty welcome back. i was so happy to see you again. so happy in fact that all i could hear in my head was the evil midnight bomber saying "yeah baby,... yeah"

i am so sick of reruns i could,... do something drastic(nothing is coming to me right now).

there are so many more i know, but that's enough for now.

It's nice to see that someone will syndicate a good show. Too many times a craptastic show will get bought and played for no other reason than a big name. I said the same thing when Bravo bought the rights to Keen Eddie. If you haven't seen that and are a fan of Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you are certainly missing out. They actually released it on DVD. It was not given the opportunity to succeed in a summer time slot. Much like Eyes was when it was given a Wednesday at 10:00 slot against CSI and L&O. Fastlane was a terrific show and was doing well on Tuesdays. You knew it was dead when it was sent to Friday's. A show geared towards 18-25's on a night when they are least likely to be home. Now I can at least see it once in awhile.
