It's a good thing I don't take GS reviews seriously and Tom McShea you know the guy who gave a certain Legend of Zelda game a 7.5 has gotten the community talking again with The Last of Us giving it a 8.0.

Well with the high praise the game has been getting plenty of perfect scores GS probably says let's throw in an 8.0 to make us different. I mean they come up with all the postive feedback and then throw either 1 or 2 negative things at the game and say that the game is worthy of an 8.

Me personally I think this game for me in terms of my hype I have been pushing this game game as maybe the one to dethrone Uncharted 2 as the best PS3 exclusive since Naughty Dog are making it.

Watch GS give GTAV a 10,Beyond Two Souls a 7.5 and some of the AAA 3DS titles 8s

I don't think the problem is Tom...I think its GS' reviewing credibility altogether. Carolyn gave Noby Noby Boy a 7.5 while admitting that it lacked any sort of challenge and structure. So according to GS, The Last of Us is only a point and a half better than a game that really serves no purpose at all.

I was screaming to the hills about this same issue when Kevin gave Defiance a 6.0 regardless of stating how fun it was repeatedly throughout his review.

Tom's review was honest and extremly well written. IGN's was horrible. Though it wasn't as bad as Greg Miller's UC3 review it was still overlayed with fanboyism. Skyward sword and UC3 are nowhere near a 10, and I'm sure the Last of us isn't a 10 either though I'm looking forward to recieving it.

The thing is, the production value of games like the ones Naughty Dog creates are skyhigh so reviewers easily forget to give the gameplay an in depth look. Beyond Two Souls will be a love it or hate it game, mark my words. Some will claim it is what gaming needs, while others will miss actually using the controller.

@Leakybubbles : Me too and it's rated as the second best PS3 exclusive behind Uncharted 2.

@almossbb: Yes I agree but he also reviewed Halo ODST and gave that a 9. So is this telling people something or is it just me.

I ALWAYS look at the meticritic score for the COMBINED score.

It's all opinion, even if it's unpopular. Besides, 8 is still a great score, don't forget that, regardless of little negative things that aren't nitpicks.

i was pretty surprised by the score. i thought at the very least it would have gotten an 8.5. The reason I am slightly irritated was because he had a lot of positives and very little nit-picky negatives so i didnt understand how he chose it to be an 8.0. It's still a good score just unexpected. And Tom tends to be one of the more odd reviewers so it's whatever. I personally still cant wait to pick this up though.

whatever an 8 is a good score anyway. tom is just too critical sometimes i guess, since he tends to score games lower than what others score. (except for fable 3 cause after i played that game i thought it deserved a 5 not a 7). also whenever the community is hyped for a game they always want it to get a 10 even with out playing it. anyways looking forward to playing this game soon.

I know right? They gave Resident Evil 6 a 4.5! and that was far better than Skyward Sword and The Last of Us!! Screw people who have opinions!!!!!!

Well maybe they should review games the same day we get to play them.

Who gives a s**t? I mean, really? If review scores are really all people care about then reviews shouldn't even exist. Too many people read far too much in to the score alone, and forget about what was actually written. And it annoys me when people say "Oh it should have got a 10", because pretty much all the f*****g time the people who complain haven't even played the b*****d game. Seriously, forget it. Who cares if he gave The Last of Us an 8, or Skyward Sword 7.5. Just play the bloody games you want to play and quit complaining. Is it any wonder so many publishers back-hand publications to receive higher scores, because most people seem more preoccupied with the score then the damn game. And since when has 8 become regarded as a bad score? Have you read IGN's review for The Last of Us? You should be complaining about that instead, because unlike Tom giving a completely subjective review the Sony fanboy in Colin Moriarty just came rushing to the surface. The review is a joke, the score isn't relevant. It's just like the review Richard George gave Skyward Sword.

You haven't played the game yet, this is Tom's take on the game and publications and people will not always agree with you. I'm sure there are many games that you have liked a lot less than Gamespot have also.

Also the complaints he did give may be few, but they may be enough to have a great impact on the game at large. There may be a single issue with something but that issue may be of significant importance. Also gamespot don't work by assuming all games are a 10 and taking off points due to problems, the game gets the score the reviewer thinks it deserves based on its achievements as well as its negatives. There may be no real issues as such but it's achievements may not be quite enough to warrant a top tier score.

Oh and 8 is a great score, that means it's a great game that is highly recommended. I for one appreciate a more critical approach to games as it helps to make those games that really excel stand out.

Honestly dude, 8.0 = Great. I expected it to be higher too and I automatically thought "KVO" when I saw the score, but it's far from slander. The quirks he mentioned are well worth enough to keep it from achieving a 10, but I was expecting a minimum of 8.5.

Focus on the words, not the score...

@siberian142

Yeah but some times the words & scores don't coincide and ends up misleading people. For example, Definace. Kevin gave it a score of 6.0 (fair) but mentioned several times throughout his review about how fun and addictive the game was.

Does that make any sense to you?

@siberian142 At least I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Have you read IGN's review of The Last of Us? It's embarrassing really. The Sony fanboy in Colin Moriarty really rushed to the surface for that one, just as it did for his Uncharted 3 review. And just as it did for Richard George's Skyward Sword review.

@widdowson91 @siberian142I just find it silly how whenever complains about a review, it's always the score that is brought up and not the actual review. Like this blog, he doesn't really argue anything that McShea said in it, he is mad about how a few negatives bring down the overall score to a point where it's generally lower than everyone else who reviewed it. Not to mention it causes people who probably haven't read the review or played the review to attack Tom because he doesn't consider it the pinnacle of perfection that every other site does.

The score is pointless. Metacritic is pointless. At the end of the day, the score is an opinion, yet everybody puts it up on a pedestal over the written word. That is why reviewing should change and the score system should be thrown out the window because the masses apparently can not handle it.

@widdowson91 @siberian142 IGN has some embarrassingly bad reviews. The way they set up their editorial team is ridiculous. Assigning editors to specifically cover one console is a sure-fire way to breed fanboyism, and it really shows with pretty much every high-level console exclusive release.

Plus, they're just bad writers, plain and simple. Though Tom McShea doesn't pander to fanboys, he's far more levelheaded and articulate than pretty much anyone at IGN.
