Or simply Raw Danger, an interesting game about survival during a major flood. Hypothermia, raging flood currents, falling debris and loose electric cables are your main enemies in your struggle.
I've tried to get the first Zettai Zetsumei Toshi - also known as Disaster Report - before playing Raw Danger because I hardly ever skip one game in a series but I've never been able to find it.
Anyways, it's a good adventure game with an interesting approach to survival, even though your characters seem to suffer way too much from hypothermia.
You control several characters whose stories are linked based on the decisions you take throughout the game. Different from most RPG's out there, you can actually choose to save yourself and let the weak and elderly die or be the brave soul to rescue then. On one particular moment, you find your former boss hanging from a cliff and can decide between saving him, smiling at him or even better, stealing his hat away! LOL! I'm currently playing the second character so I'm not sure if the evil path has great impact on the final outcome of the story but the dialogue options are hilarious.
Raw Danger has its good moments and ideas but I kinda miss the horror on the survival. The main reason I like Raw Danger it's because it leads me to imagine a survival horror game with more emphasys on hunger, bleeding, stamina and even hyppothermia. One would have to struggle against zombies and survive the environment, much like The Thing. Also, being able to take an evil or non-heroic path to survival would also be great.
I've also written a review for Land of The Dead, here's the link for those interested.
I've recently finished playing Sanitarium, check out my review here.
It's an awesome game with a very solid plot that kept me playing in spite of its 1998 graphics.
The game puts you in the memories and traumas of a man in an attempt to restore sanity and peace of mind. In a series of chapters that represent some part of the characters personality and story, you slowly make your way into the truth.
I could not resist comparing it to Rule of Rose, which has a similar game play idea, at least if in your interpretation the game takes place in the main character's mind.
While Rule of Rose failed to deliver an engrossing story but presented nice graphics, Sanitarium achieved its purpose on the story but, at least on today's standards - can't compare to Rule of Rose when it comes to graphics.
It's no wonder some people think that today's games are not as fun as they used to be. Though I would not go that far, I dare say sometimes older means better. My biggest complain about modern games lie in the Tactical RPG genre, where Final Fantasy Tactics still rules supreme - please don't even try to bring NIS games to the subject ^.~
What about you guys, can you manage to squeeze some old titles among the brand new purchases ? Any other examples where older means better ?
I've recently been infected by the new virus on GS.
I was innocently reading xRiceBallx's profile when I noticed my name among the ones tagged by her. Much like zombies in survival horror games, those infected will always try to spread the malaise and this time it won't be different.
Before expelling the virus from my body, I hereby infect :Heavenwaits (oh yeah, you), Codeblue2 (this will be good), Sky-ia (also know as Siedem Nocy), Liz86 (no ninja moves will save you from this), TKF (You thought you'd be safe ?) and Dark Being (you're the 6th on my 5 people list).
So, 5 things I think you guys (probably) don't know about me.
1. Like a true nerd, I played RPG's from 14 to 29 years old. I've spent countless hours talking about dragons, trolls, saving throws, talents, feats, skills and rules. I had a solid nerd core of 5 people that played most of that time. When life got complicated and work set us apart, we simply turned to MMORPG's. We're currently playing WoW! The legend still lives, baby. BTW, I've never created a single character of my own. I've always been a DM during all those years.
2. I can't make friends in real life. My friends are the very same from the time I was 14, with the single exception of my wife that I met when I was 21. Though I'm happy to talk to a lot of people on line - some of which I do consider my friends -, outside the Internet I mostly keep to myself. My friends now live in different countries but we talk on the Internet on a daily basis. I have no friends at work or where I live. Oh, don't take it as a complaint! It's actually a personal choice, I very much prefer it that way ^.^
3. I'm a lawyer! Oh yeah, I've graduated in both economics and law and I make ends meet assessing companies fiscal data. Would you trust your fiscal data to a survival horror freak ? I know I wouldn't.
4. I only listen to video game and anime music. It's true! I don't know about any band, singer, hit or anything remotely related to it. I know by heart the music of most games I like, from old titles like Xevious to masterpieces like Silent Hill and Final Fantasy songs but I'm simply lost when I read blogs of people like Cousin_Eddy, which contain a lot of musical stuff.
5. I hate flying. The thought of getting into a plane alone make me shiver. My work requires me to travel twice a month and my suffering starts 2 to 3 days before the trip. I have nightmares, I barely eat and I get a really bad temper during that time. My wife support and my gaming really help me during the process but I really can't get used to it.
Well, hope you guys haven't died of boredom. ^.^
After many dungeon raids, insanely powerfull loot and potion brewing in WoW, I'm back to horror gaming!
This weekend I've dusted off my PS2 and started playing Rule of Rose. I still haven't given up on WoW, I've just decided that I'd have more fun gaming different genres rather than sticking with one.
I'm writing my impressions on the ESHU so feel free to go there and tell mw what you think about the game.
or Blizzard...
WoW is the reason I've been absent from GS and away from my PS2 for the last 30 days or so. It's a free time hog that sucks away every minute I'm not working or spending some time with my wife. Well, I did not have much of a social before WoW anyways, so I'm not sacrifing any healthy activities or anything. The real issue is that it takes away the time for other games and increases the pressure on sacrificing sleep for gaming, which has always been there. The bright news is that the game is amazing, for real. Few games truly deserve being recommended for everyone and WoW is one of 'em.
I wasn't really expecting much when I installed the 10 day trial, mostly because I always doubt the quality of most blockbuter media, but in WoW's case I was wrong. Sure, it's still an MMO with it's fair share of grind, loot collecting and PvP but from the interface to the world map, it's just perfect. Actually, it has a single mistake: the monthly fee.
My real life friends are all playing the game so we basically talk about the increase in the price of copper, effective ways of stun-locking an enemy to death and other WoW related stuff. I won't invite any of you to start playing so that you can't blame your addiction on me later on...
The fever will eventually subside - I had the time to write about it! - and soon I'll be able to resume my posting activities and horror game madness.
Oh, I just loved this news.
After a period of inactivity, my friends and I decided to try another MMORPG. I've been playing Guild Wars for the past 14 months, with varying degrees of intensity and even though my friends installed the game and tried it, only I have really been affected with GW fever.
I'd like to thank devs for the trial period of their MMO games. We've tried EVE, LOTRO, WoW and the last one will be Tabula Rasa. So far, the one that suited our tastes the most was WoW. I know, nothing brand new about a game released in 2004, MMO's are a time sink and all that but there's a lot of fun to wander around Azeroth leveling up with your buddies. The game is pretty developed by now with huge improvements over its original version. We've chosen a fairly new PvP server - Ysondre - to test our skills. So, if Tabula Rasa doesn't prove to be a pretty original and nice experience - why only a 3-day-trial ? - we'll be at WoW.
I've also very happy I can finally play Siren 2 in color! I can also watch the movies and actualy understand which scenario needs to be played to further progress in the story.
