The gap between Corrie and everything else widened this week, it was the only show to get more than 9 million viewers and it got more than 9 million viewers with 4 out of 5 of it's episodes! Corrie's average for the week was 9.73 to EastEnders' 8.51 - ouch!
As the nights start to draw in, it's getting more difficult for the smaller channels to compete; 5.25 million viewers were needed in order to get onto this week's Top 20, the best BBC2, Channel 4 and Five could manage was 3.62 million (Extras), 3.16 million (You Are What You Eat) and 3.15 million (CSI: Miami) respectively.
The week ending 17th September's Top 20 looks like this:
1. Coronation Street [ITV1 Mon] - 10.47m
2. EastEnders [BBC1 Tue] - 8.98m
3. How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? [BBC1 Sat] - 8.20m

I'm now the editor of a person, which is nice...Alistair Cooke to be precise, quite proud of that considering I wasn't really aiming to be a person editor but anyway...
I mentioned on a forum post that I'd post a floor plan of the West Wing (the real one) here - one of the many perculiar things I have stored on my hard drive - so here that is:

Have fun everyone!

I'm going back to Uni tomorrow and start my second year in about two weeks.
Just spent the day packing and have decided on about 140 DVDs to take with me in my CD case...
I've trimmed down on TV show DVDs this year so I only have:
- Alias Series 2
- Angel Series 1
- Futurama Series 1
- Frasier Series 1
- Firefly
- ER Series 1
- CSI Part 2 of Series 2
- Teachers Series 1 and 2
- America
- The West Wing Series 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7
I was so adicted to The West Wing last year that I meant not to take any DVDs of the series this year but there was loads of room left over in the case so I thought 'what the hell'...doubht my new housemates will see much of me now, I'll be the guy who locks himself in the room where they hear the theme for TWW regularly every 45 minutes...

Anyhow...I just wanted to say to anyone who's just starting Uni this year to enjoy it as best you can, just be yourself and be nice to everyone and you'll get along just fine - good luck and have fun

I'm now very happy to be the editor for the 1970s documentary series America. It's a really amazing and insightful documentary for anyone who's not seen it.
I'm hoping to add full recaps for each of the episodes which might take some time, otherwise the guide is pretty much complete.
Yay

The BBC might be a bit worried with this week's Top 20, in a week that saw Emmerdale go head to head with EastEnders and beating it, the BBC soap also ranked consistently lower than Coronation Street all week long. Meanwhile on Saturday nights, ITV is slowly regaining control with X Factor being the biggest draw of the night and second biggest draw of the week!
TV shows needed 4.56 million viewers to get on this week's Top 20, none of the smaller channels had qualifying shows, Five came closest, drawing 3.81 million for an episode of CSI: New York, Channel 4's highest rated was Supernanny with 3.29 million and the best BBC-2 could score was 3.03 million with Dragons' Den.
Here's the Top 20:
1. Coronation Street [ITV1 Wed] - 10.30m
2. The X Factor [ITV1 Sat] - 9.08m
3. EastEnders [BBC1 Tue] - 8.91m
4. Emmerdale [ITV1 Wed] - 7.73m
5. Match of the Day Live [BBC1 Sat] - 7.33m
6. The National Lottery - In It to Win It [BBC1 Sat] - 6.82
7. Holby City [BBC1 Tue] - 6.55m
8. Dalziel and Pascoe [BBC1 Sun] - 6.44m
9. Midsomer Murders [ITV1 Sun] - 6.28m
10. Ten O'Clock News [BBC1 Wed] - 5.99m
11. Where the Heart Is [ITV1 Sun] - 5.96m
12. How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? [BBC1 Sat] - 5.92m
13. Murphy's Law [BBC1 Mon] - 5.83m
14. The Bill [ITV1 Wed] - 5.58m
15. The Chase [BBC1 Sun] - 5.24m
16. Test the Nation: The National IQ Test [BBC1 Sat] - 5.09m
17. Tenants from Hell [ITV1 Wed] - 4.88m
18. BBC News and Weather [BBC1 Sun] - 4.68m
19. Antiques Roadshow's Greatest Finds [BBC1 Sun] - 4.56m
=. Bad Girls [ITV1 Thu] - 4.56mOne episode (highest rated) for each series only. Comprised from official BARB ratings for all national terrestrial TV channels: BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five

I find that if you want to know TV ratings, it's pretty easy to find ones for US TV shows with the Neilson Top 20 available all over the place but no one seems to publish the UK Top 20 so I'm going to start, these are official numbers from BARB for the week before last (week ending 27th August):
1. Coronation Street [ITV1] - 10.35m
2. EastEnders [BBC1] - 9.11m

4. The X Factor [ITV1] - 7.36m
5. The National Lottery - In It to Win It [BBC1] - 7.09m
6. Casualty [BBC1] - 6.90m
7. Holby City [BBC1] - 6.10m
8. Silent Witness [BBC1] - 5.98m
9. Ten O'Clock News [BBC1] - 5.87m
10. BBC News [BBC1] - 5.73m
11. How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria [BBC1] - 5.67m
12. Murphy's Law [BBC1] - 5.47m
13. The Bill [ITV1] - 5.26m
14. Where the Heart Is [ITV1] - 5.21m

I've not been updating my guides to the best of my ability of late, I've been a bit busy with work and then when I'm not busy with work I can't get on the damn internet...all so annoying (but it will all be better on Friday when we finally get broadband - we must be one of the last villages in the World not to have it!!!).
Anyhow, the EastEnders guide has really seen the worst of my inability to update and for that I'm very sorry especially since I made such a fuss about getting the guide in the first place...I will do my best (as of this coming weekend) to update it regularly - I've already started by adding yesterday's episode.
I was almost glad to see the back of Big Brother this year. Updating a guide 7 days a week for 13 weeks isn't an easy thing to keep up and having to keep up with 6 episodes a week of BBLB and 5 episodes a week of Richard & Judy takes time but with 80% of my work load out of the way I can also get back to filling in the gaps on EastEnders and R&J, I've got at least a years worth to add to each, so that's my plan for now (that and [legally] downloading TV episodes over broadband)!
To calm myself while not being to get on the internet I've been watching the first season of Veronica Mars, I saw bits and pieces of it when it was on Living TV but I wasn't home from Uni enough to catch the whole thing so I bought the DVD...anyway, it's really really really good and I can highly recommend it to anyone who's not seen it, I can't believe how abysmal the ratings for the series has been in the US, UK and Canada...I loved the show so much I've now got the lovely Kristen Bell in my first personalised banner - isn't she pretty?!
That's pretty much all I had to say...
Have fun everyone!

Whew! After 3 months of intense submitting to Big Brother, BBLB, Richard & Judy and EastEnders I have ascended to Level 30!!!
30's a big number...
And there's still almost 3 weeks left of BB-7 and BBLB-9, 6 weeks left of R&J-6 and 21 years of EE to fill! I'd better get to it!

Well, after more than a few angry PMs, forum posts and a ludicrous number of submissions, I'm finally the proud editor of EastEnders!
I'm very excited about it...now I can get down to the real business of updating it!!!

I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the death of Aaron Spelling, who produced so many iconic TV series over the years and in so doing has changed the way television is made and watched.
"I think there is a need to escape," Mr. Spelling once said. "I think it is a release valve that keeps people from blowing their brains out or having nervous breakdowns. We find that the majority of our audience is worried, really worried, about the cost of food, how much it costs to send your kid to school, the cost of clothes.
"Unfortunately, we often have to make the choice between 150 critics and 150 million Americans out there, and I have always felt that my job was to please [the viewers]. To entertain them."
And he did.
He leaves a legacy that is not easily forgotten. He'll be missed.

8Mar 06I can understand why people aren't watching the West Wing right now. Series 5 was bloody awful and Series 6 was fine but nothing special.
I miss the West Wing when it was special. Back when you actually had to stay in the room and keep your eyes firmly glued on the screen and your mind tuned in for fear that you might miss a vital story arc amongst the poetry that was Aaron Sorkin's dialogue.
It was a sad day when I opened my paper to the news that the West Wing would be no more.
Series 7 starts in two days over here on my new favourite channel (for the one and only reason that it shows the West Wing at a time that I can actually watch it) - More 4.
Hallelujah for More 4!
I don't quite know what to expect from series 7, even though I've been very naughty reading spoilers all over the place, I can't quite get to grips with that whole thing where they skipped a year and pretended they didn't. At least Dallas had the courtesy to come right out and say they were altering the time-space continuum.
I don't like Vinnick. At least I don't like him as a Republican. Who ever said that Sorkin's West Wing was biased? That is utter crap! In Sorkin's day, ideas were presented from many different angles, issues were often unresolved and allowed for the viewer to make up their own mind rather than this new brand of West Wing that forces Liberal views down your throat and portrays Republicans as villains, even Vinnick - who's quite a nice guy for all the wrong reasons.
I don't like Vinnick but I think he should win the election, not that it will make the slightest bit of difference since the series ends on Inauguration day, quite frankly because he's better than Santos and Josh.
Grrrr, why don't I so much as like the characters I adored 2 years ago?
Whatever happened to CJ, and to Bartlet himself?
I hope there's some degree of quality to be found within the West Wing's 7th season, if not, I guess there's always Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip to look forward to in about 10 months time (providing it gets picked up over here, providing it get picked up in the US, for that matter...I've got my fingers crossed).- Posted Mar 8, 2006 3:35 pm PT

8Mar 06Now, being on the wrong side of that big pond over there, I haven't seen CBS' How I Met Your Mother but I'm constantly reading that ex-Buffy and Angel stars are popping up all over the place which is nice to see but can't they get jobs anywhere else?
Apparently, Amy Acker will be joining Alexis Denisof and series regular Allison Hannigan for the series finalle...I'm not sure I'll be able to watch this show, I'll be half expecting Allison to cast a spell and Amy to turn all evil and stuff and Alexis to...fall over.
I'm also reading that Joss Whedon said last week that 'Buffy may return'.
I really can't say I believe this. I mean I can almost believe that he said but I can't believe that it's true, it seems that he's got bigger fish to fry - Wonder Woman and the like - to worry about getting Buffy back on the air.
Personally, I'd rather he did a follow-uo to Serenity too before he started worrying about bringing Buffy back.- Posted Mar 8, 2006 3:12 pm PT

18Jun 05Here's my favourite shows:
1. Buffy (what else???)
2. The West Wing (the funniest, smartest show in the history of the world)
3. Angel (so dark and funny and annoyingly brilliant)
=. Firefly (just annoyingly brilliant -- why did this show get axed?)
5. Big Brother (UK) (guilty pleasure)
6. CSI (can't be bothered with the spin-offs though)
7. Scrubs (so so so funny)
=. Frasier (funny, smart and did I mention it was funny?)
9. Becker (the most underrated show ever)
10. 24 (only just makes the top 10 . . . series 1 was by far the best)
Would have been in my top 10 but its only been going a year and I don't like to judge things too early:
Desperate Housewives -- who DOESN'T LOVE this show?!?!
