2012 Game of the Year
Really proud of Gamespot's choice this year. Journey is a beautiful game and deserves it. It may feel short, but the game is definitely a unique gem in a sea of commercial derivatives. It's a peaceful game... no blood, no bad guys, no arcade high score... just a beautiful world and a companion to try to communicate with if you get lonely. Journey took video games to a new kind of fun that hasn't been experienced before in a video game. I don't always agree with Gamespot's GOTY, but this year I wholeheartedly do. I was surprised by the pick, but very happy that such a small game can get the recognitition it deserves. Well done Gamespot.

Look Backward
I don't have a Nintendo DS, PSP, or WiiU, and I don't expect to get one. I love handhelds, but other than pokemon games there isn't much to deter me from the Playstation or XBox. The past couple weeks I've been playing Playstation 2 games, XBox games, and most of my time has been spent playing GBA games; on an original GBA no less! Been playing some of my favourites: Need for Speed Underground 1 & 2, Grand Theft Auto Sand Andreas, Super Mario Advance, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
New games may have better graphics and online fluency, but these games have decent graphics (not like the ancient, N64 and before, games) and they have so much more put into them as well. Everyone is sick of me ranting on about how San Andreas is FAR better then GTAIV so I won't go there. However, take the music for example, sure the symphony in modern games is beautiful, but I MUCH prefer the 32-bit music than the electric guitar, rock, rap, or dance music in some modern video games. It's not even nostalgia, I genuinely love even modern 32-bit music. As for the GBA, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance has really hooked me in; I prefer it to Tactics Ogre, it seems there are more options in this game.
Anyway, I beat Mass Effect 2 a while ago, honestly I found it a little boring. It's really fun, but it definitely has it's faults. Dragon Age is still my all-time favourite Playstation 3 game... definitely the best storytelling in a video game ever.
Take this as a friendly reminder to revisit some of the old favourites once in a while instead of getting caught up in hype of expensive and sometimes disappointing new releases. -

Beginning ME2 and Discussion.
I consider myself to be a Playstation aficionado... I have a great collection of PS1, PS2, and of course PS3 games. I've played XBox maybe 5 times my entire life? And I rarely play games on my computer. In effect, I have never played the first Mass Effect game, but from what I've heard I don't really need to, since the story is brought up to speed in the beginning of ME2. I bought ME2 for my PS3 a couple days ago... it seems popular games never get below $20 unless you want to buy a used game (which personally I never do). I realize I'm very late to the party... while many were playing Mass Effect 2, I was in a trance playing Red Dead Redemption; and by the time it came out on the playstation, I had kind of lost interest. I've played the demo a long time ago, what some people really like (but I tend to dislike) is that it is really half rpg half shooter. I love RPG's, and Dragon Age Origins is arguably my favourite game of all-time, but I never play Call of Duty or Battlefield, they aren't my type of game... In general I find shooters pointless, "oh I killed a guy before he killed me... so what?". Fallout 3 I loved, it wasn't the conventional shooter, I almost never took a shot without using V.A.T.S. and so it genuinely felt like an rpg. Mass Effect 2 genuinely feels like half shooter half rpg, so it is very much a love-hate relationship for me. Playing the Mass Effect 3 demo, in which they had a narrative mode, really drew me in; but of course, it's bad enough to skip the first game, but to skip the second one too, I wasn't going to do it... So, ME2 is gonna be a fun ride I'm sure, but I highly doubt I'm going to ever get the "Insanity" trophy.
