    - Finale -

I'm getting bored of doing this so I'm just gonna list off the remaining things I had in mind.

    - Voice Messaging
    - More Avatars
    - Ability to Change Username
    - More Friend Sorting Options
    - Better Gamer Cards
    - Trophies Count for Something Somewhere
    - Increase the Number of Friends on the Friend List
    - Some sort of Rep System
    - Some sort of Reporting System
    - XMB during Movies and PS1/2 Games

And I think that was it. I have "Trophy List" written down but I don't remember what that was referring to.

    - Game Nights -

PSN lacks community. There's no game nights held by dev's (if there are, you have to hunt for them via that dev's specific website). There's no tournaments.

There's nothing that symbolizes PSN as having a community. We just all do our own thing and that's about it. I won't even get into Home. Just ugh.

Instead of adding a ton of store icons, some sort of community portal should have been added in. If they can do a pointless ticker that informs me of "girlz" playing games then why can't they work on adding a community aspect to the ps3?

Game nights with prizes (psn cards, codes for betas, etc) would be awesome. Tomorrow's Feature Discussion - Voice Messaging

    - Online Community/Website -

The current playstation website has evolved from being nothing to do with your PSN account to having more interaction with it. You log in with it to access the site and the forums. You can do trophy stuff like compare with friends or stalk people that aren't on your friend's list. But that's really about it.

Like I mentioned yesterday, being able to send messages to friends who are online on PSN is a needed feature.

But what about news? Updates? Posting the playstation blog there? Quick links to stuff like network status? A PSN downtime maintenance schedule?

The PSN community feels disjointed. A community website where you can set up tournaments that are open to anyone would be great. Stuff like that. To follow up on this more, the next feature discussion will mention more that can be worked into the Online Community.

    - PSN Messaging Via Web -

This will likely be rather short as it's hard to expand on something that's so obvious.

We should be able to send messages to our friends via playstation.com. We can update our trophy cards there, we can compared trophies with anyone in the world as long as we know their PSN ID, as well as other stuff.

So why can't we send messages to our friends?

This would have been helpful when my ps3's internal power supply died and wouldn't turn back on. I could have messaged some people to say I won't be around. Or just to message in general.

I really hope something like this is being thought about over at Sony HQ cause they need to start making PSN feel more like a community rather than just a group of random people playing games.

    - Profile Cards -

This is different from gamercards. I'm talking about those profile cards we have:

    Page 1

    Page 2

    Page 3

Page 1 and 2 should be combined even if that means making the card itself larger or wider. Making the trophies clickable so you can see where they are from would be nice as well. It can be hard at times to figure out what game that is just by looking at the icon.

Page 3...what doesn't need to be fixed here?

Why is there a spot for three languages? Is that something everyone on my psn friends list would want to know? What about the 'About me' section? It's only one line so it's restricted in what you can actually say I believe. I've never filled it out. Why not have more sections. Location, Favorite Game, Quote, Website perhaps? It just feels so bare. Granted, most people probably don't even look at these. But it would be nice to have the ability to put more detail if you wanted to do so.

Again, this is rather short and not likely to ever happen. I personally probably wouldn't fill in too much details thanks to psn stalkers but it's always nice to have options.

    - Trophy Syncing -

Side note, I forgot about the holiday yesterday and didn't feel like blogging. So here we are today...

What is trophy syncing? Well, every time you get a trophy you need to sync your psn id to the server for it to appear on your profile card, trophy list when comparing, your gamercard, etc.

It's likely one of the most annoying things you have to do. I've had friends play through games and not have the trophies appear for days or weeks because they haven't synced them.

Why is this not done automatically in the background? Why do we still need to sync every time we get a trophy?

This, again, is a short one. It's simple, it needs to go away completely or be automatic

NOTE: This series will be off on the weekends.

    - Giftability -

Aw, how nice of you to buy me *insert PSN game here,* it's one I've always wanted! Well aren't you just a....

Wait, you didn't buy me a PSN game. Shucks.

How nice would it be to be able to buy something in the store and gift it to a friend? You buy it, send it to a friend, and they get a download access code or something like that.

That wouldn't solve the "illegal game sharing" but for those people that want to actually support their console, a gift system would be great.

And if that went cross region, just how awesome would that be as well? You have a friend in Japan or England or where ever. They can buy you a game from their store and send it you to.

This is a simple idea and doesn't require much to say. We should be able to buy stuff and gift it to friends. Games, DLC, Themes, videos, all of that should be able to be gifted.

    - Cross Game Chatting -

This is likely the number one requested feature. In-game XMB probably held that status until it was implemented over a year ago. The bast majority want this feature and yet it still hasn't been added in yet.

They say they are working on it, that they want to do it right before releasing it...but really? It takes this long something like that to be done right? Though I guess with the 3.0 fiasco, they might be a little hesitant but if they released that feature in 3.0 people might have overlooked the friend's list, the ticker, 3$ dynamic themes, store icons everywhere...

    *Ahem*

There's tons of topics scattered throughout the official PlayStation forums asking for this and wondering why we still don't have it yet. Even more disconcerting is the fact that 3.0 is supposedly the last firmware of the year. Meaning no chance of cross game chatting in 2009. And that simple fact coupled with 3.0 should have been 2.9 has people furious.

And I believe they have every right. Instead of adding in a feature that 90% of ps3 owners want, they add in a ticker that let's us know "Girlz Game Too" and other pointless junk. They add in sparkles and make the font larger but cross game chatting is still MIA.

Maybe it's hiding in the attic, or perhaps in a box in the basement. Maybe it's shy.

Regardless, it's a feature that should be top on the list. Not sparkles or how many store icons we can add to the xmb. I personally want the feature, I'm not dying over it but it would be nice to have. But the thing is, they have to do it right. You have to be able to do anything and still be in the chat.

You need to be able to do stuff like switch games, navigate the xmb, send messages, maybe even surf the web. But the chat needs to remain active and working the entire time. Sure, some things like settings and stuff will probably be unusable in the chat, fine. But in essence you need to be able to do just about everything you can normally.

Maybe one day we'll get this feature. But god help Sony, after 3.0 they better do it right or people will complain even more.

    - Status Options -

"Hey vix, we have status options like Unavailable. What more could you possibly want?"

Oh, there's more...there's definitely more. All we have is Unavailable actually...

The biggest one that is in dire need of implementation is: Invisibility.

"Bwaah? But then no one will know I'm online!?!"

Well, that's usually the point of being invisible.

    I digress again.

Ever want to play online with people that aren't your friends? Ever want to just play a game without being bothered?

Here is a perfect example of why the invisibility option is needed:

I was playing LittleBigPlanet with my niece one night. We had been playing for a while when one of my friend's, who is no longer a friend anymore because of many reasons, signed on and tried to join our LBP game. Mind you, I specifically set my status to Unavailable so I wouldn't be bothered by anyone. Apparently that means nothing. This "friend" tried to get into our game for thirty minutes straight. When I kept saying *coughgtfocough* no, he resorted to sending me messages asking if he could join. Because apparently saying no for 30 minutes means bother vix more! So after I neglected the messages, he tried again for another thirty minutes to get into our game. The worst part about this is that the "let me join your game" messages pop up and use the X button to accept the join which happens to be the same button as jump. So here we are playing and this idiot is trying to join our game and I have to worry about accidentally letting this moron into the room.

So that's a prime example of why a person might want to go invisible. It can even be something as simple as getting a new game and wanting to play it but wanting to play it without anyone bothering you to try out it's online mode or asking you if it's any good or something along those lines.

Using LittleBigPlanet as an example again:

Let's say you are going to the trophy that requires you to ace every level (not die once). If someone were to join you without you wanting them too and they die in the level and you haven't, it ruins your change of getting the ace. Both of you must stay alive to get credit for it.

This is nothing against any of my friends on PSN specifically but sometimes you want to be online without being "online." You might not want to be bothered but if you get messages you can still read them and reply if you want, you can still see who is online, and so on and so forth.

Maybe Unavailable should be changed to Busy. Maybe another option for Away should be added.

But Invisibility definitely needs to be added in the near future.

Tomorrow's Feature Discussion - Cross Game Chatting

    Stay tuned fellow gamers.

    - Messaging and the Inbox -

Sometimes I wonder about who came up with PSN's messaging system. Were they thinking to themselves:

"Let's make this the most complicated process ever! Just because we can. Mwahahaha!"

Let's start with the Inbox, or lack thereof. Yes, there is an inbox. It's called the Message Box. But that's it. It doesn't display that you have new messages. There's no, say for example 1/10 next to it which would mean 1 new message, 10 old messages. It just says Message Box regardless of how many messages you have. Why is there no unified inbox?

Everytime you get a message, a quick indicator pops up on the screen:

However, if you don't see that, you may never know you have a message. That's because messages get placed next to the name of whoever sent it to you:

See that tiny little square next to the strawberry icon? That tells you you have a message from that person.

But let's say you just boot up your system. You walk away while it's booting and come back and go right into a game. You don't bother to look at your friends list. You go into the game and for all you know, you could have 20 messages.

You would have to scroll through your friends list just to see if you have messages or check your Message Box...but why check the MB if there's no visible reason to do so?

Firmware 3.0 introduced a "status box" in the upper right hand corner:

See that little random square, that shows you have new messages. It's a step in the right direction because at least now you know when you have a message.

    But...

All messages should go to one place and one place only. There is no need for messages to show up next to a person's name.

Here is a mock up of the Message Box. The first one is how it looks now regardless. The three below it are examples of ways to improve it:

    ---

So that brings us back to messaging in general. My only complaint with that is just how many menu's you have to go through to get to a message...that is if you don't use the message box like myself. I often forget it's there since it does...nothing. Click on a user, scroll to whichever message option, then scroll through the message list to find the new one.

That's one thing that could be altered...how messages are actually displayed. It's a jumbled mess. New messages might appear after old messages or before them. But in all honesty, that doesn't bother me as much as the inbox.

The message icon is a step forward while the ticker (Euro accounts don't have it) is a step backwards. This perhaps will be added to the list for future discussion. For now, I'll leave this as is.

Welcome one and all to the Introduction of a series of blogs about what PSN Needs. Some notes and disclaimers first before we get started.

    DISCLAIMER

Fanboy comments are not welcomed in this blog.
The current owner of this blog owns all three next gen consoles and doesn't care if you think one or the other sucks and "your" system is "teh w1n" so it is strongly cautioned that if you have absolutely nothing to say that uses thought and brain waves, best not say it. Yes, some of these ideas are from other systems but those same ideas aren't necessarily an original idea for that console either. The owner does not want to hear about whatever console had it first or anything like that. She will has little tolerance for stupidity lately and might take drastic measures. Stupidity is not welcomed in this blog series.

    - Intro -

What is this series about? This series is about features PSN needs. Not games or downloadable content but actual network features. Take for example when in-game xmb was added a year or so ago. Features like that will be discussed. The owner's current list of features is around 18 with one of her "features" being implemented tomorrow, September 1st, in the 3.0 firmware update. Perhaps Big Brother was listening in on one of her many rants on PSN while playing Burnout Paradise...

    She digresses...

The intent of this series is not to whine about PSN but to discuss how it can be better and turn into a formidable foe. One cannot deny that PSN has come a long way in the time it has been established. It still has a long way to go but it is not a joke like it once used to be. The adage of "you get what you pay for" can no longer be used as a way to mock PSN. Yes, PSN is still missing a few key features which will be discussed in later editions of this series, no one denies that. But anyone with half a brain, or more preferably, can see that PSN is moving to be on par with other services.

Many forget (whether on purpose or not) that Microsoft has many years of experience in networking and online services. They knew what they were doing and knew how to implement it well. Sony never had any sort of unified online system and thus are more in a learning and building process as they go along. It's hard to compare two systems when one has had years upon years of existance while the other has only come into play within the past three years. Xbox Live knows what it is doing and how to do it but it's not without it's own fair share of problems as well which perhaps could be another series down the road. But that's the beauty of the way things work now-a-days. Updates don't need to wait for another version of the console. Patches and firmware aid in keeping the problems minimal and constantly bring about new features.

Sure, it's a game of catch up on PSN's part in some aspects but that catching up is happening a lot faster than some may think.

Tomorrow's feature will talk about the Inbox and Messaging, part of which will be addessed in the new firmware.

    Stay tuned fellow gamers.

If you have a feature that you feel should be included in this series, pm vix and she'll look to see if it isn't already on her list. If it isn't, she'll add it and discuss it at a later date.

I think I'll just bite the bullet and do my multi part blog series on what i think needs to be added to psn.

I'll probably write up the intro/disclaimer tomorrow and then start the blogs on a maybe daily basis until I have all of my ideas out or maybe I won't rush them. Haven't decided yet.

KT. I got my platinum in Katamari Tribute. I was down to 29 items...found all but 10 on my own over the course of a week or so. Then someone who doesn't even have the game helped me find the final 10. Good times. I'm working on some side stuff in KT for my katamari forum but it's not a huge hurry so I do a little bit at a time. Now to wait for the US release so I can understand what was going on in though Jumboman movies...

FP. So Fat Princess is a riot to play. I only need 5 more trophies on that for 100% but 2 of those, Thuggee and Gluteus Maximus, might give me a bit of trouble. The one night I was playing, it was a 32x32 match and I was on blue while 5 of my friends were on red. I came close to winning but lost by only a few kills in death match. It was amusing. I wasn't sure if I wanted to get it since i didn't have a good experience with the beta but in the end i'm loving it. Good times to be had by all. They just need to work out some kinks as far as host priviledges go and what not and it'll be all good.

Short blog, sorry. Not much else to say at the moment.

anywho...loving it even if there's very little new stuff. can't wait till the english version so i can understand it all, but loving it regardless. glad to have a katamari game i'll actively play again. even if it've played 90% of it to death already.

Got the ps3 back last night. Played games all night, it was nice. Downloaded the katamari tribute demo from the japanese playstation store and love it. My imported copy is currently en route to me. Very excited I got the ps3 back in time though. If not I had a blogged planned out just for that special occasion of waiting two years for katamari to return to a good controller only to be without the console. But now I don't have to do that. So woo.

In honor of my 400th blog, my ps3 breaking, and my ps3 currently being en route back to jersey (woot)...here's a game cat pic or two or more. I was going to again start posting my psn wishlist but I don't want to make my blog friends only and since I can't block certain users from my blog or profile (totally gonna post that in the suggestion forum), it's gonna have to wait a while.

So instead, Junior and Mikey have at it!

Mikey had a long day of gaming

    "Yes?"

"But vix, I wanna play that one!!"

    Xcat

Which one is Junior? Should be somewhat obvious I would think but yeah...

The ps3 is boxed and ready to be shipped tomorrow. I'm actually nervous about sending it but not much I can do.

Random: the vixtionary might be returning soon.

    ...of people with ps3 problems.

however, before the bots rejoice...it wasn't the ylod. it was simply death. i was playing a game and it shut off. no red light, no nothing. so i flipped the switch off and then on and the red light came back on but the moment i went to power on the system, it went out and it laughed at me and said noooo and then committed suicide. early indication is that the power supply either internal or external died so it shouldn't be too big of a deal i hope if that's the problem. luckily i have an extended warranty through the store i bought it since my sony warranty is up so i get it fixed for free and if they can't fix it, i get a gift card for 600 bucks since they can't technically replace a 60 gig model when they aren't being made anymore. i hope it can be fixed since i don't want to lose on out backwards compatibility but eh, i could live without it if i had to. at least there's hope the hd is intact.

figures though, the new katamari is out in japan is just over two weeks. lol
