    The Best of Both Worlds

Here is a story from a while back that I'm sure many of you remember:

Silicon Knights boss Dennis Dyack believes it's inevitable that the future will see a single, unified console format hit the market.
His opinion has appeared in the wake of an EA senior executive expressing the same view.
In an article penned for Official Xbox Magazine, Dyack said, "Imagine a unified platform -- one console for all gamers -- that would bring a massive paradigm shift to the games industry, where games would become better in quality, cheaper, and more widely available. Sound good? It can happen. Better yet, it's inevitable. It will happen".

While I partially agree that it can happen, I believe in a better solution to having three totally different consoles and that is bringing it back down to two. These two consoles will be split between the now two categories of games: Hardcore and Casual. The "hardcore" console will be made by Microsoft and Sony together for that is the type of games they are best at. Both companies will split the profit and have all of their first parties and third parties make the games for this platform (itll be called Playbox). Nintendo on the other hand will make a console purely for casual gaming (still having Mario, Zelda, etc... though) for that is what they are best at also. This would help to make development cheaper with just two consoles to develop for and make it easier for consumers to choose what type of games they want to play. Plus itll help on the wallet for those who would want the "best of both worlds". I would price the Playbox at around $399 and the Wiicube for $299. The Playbox will have ultra realistic graphics and the Wiicube will be previous gen graphics.

Its probably not likely this will happen but just a hopeful theory.

Following Up the "Year of the PS3"

This year is undoubtedly the year of the PS3 and of when it really shows itself as what it can truly be. Big name games + Dual Shock 3 + Improved PSN + Home + PlayTV + Blueray Victory = One Big BANZAI for the folks at Sony. Now that game developers have finally begun to grasp the power and full potential of this shiny black beast, more great games will finally start rolling out the door.

So, with 2008 being a lock for PS3 dominance, how will Sony be able keep it up (other than with GOW3 and possibly FFXIII, if it doesnt come out this year already, coming in 2009)?

2008: The Year of the Sequels

In many forms of multimedia, there are sequels. These include books, movies, and games. Last year's summer blockbusters in movies were Shrek 3, Spiderman 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (#3). Also in books there was a little novel called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which was the last in the series.

Games in particular had a few sequels like PGR4, Forza 2, Halo 3, Ace Combat 6, NFS ProStreet, Ratchet & Clank FTOD, COD 4, Graw 2, Guitar Hero 3, Metroid Prime 3, Super Paper Mario, Unreal Tournament 3, Virtua Fighter 5 and Virtua Tennis 3. Last year was mostly about the new franchises like Assassin's Creed, Crysis, Mass Effect, Portal, BioShock, Heavenly Sword, Super Mario Galaxy, and Uncharted.

This year however, the sequels to almost all of the fan-favorite franchises are coming to bring doom to our wallets. Games like GTA 4, MGS4, SSBB, GoW2, and many many others are paving the way to one of the greatest blockbuster gaming years I have ever seen. I truly think this year will greatly surpass 2007's mark and set a whole new bar to overcome. There couldn't be a better time to be a gamer!

Games have definitely become a great presence in the entertainment industry and have continued to grow bigger and better. So I have one tip for anyone who loves games: START SAVING UP!!!
