This is a conversation that should not even be taking place.

Am I the only one who sees that? Am I?

    Read the thread.

There are just so many things on this site that need time and attention from the staff. Yet, instead, they are spending their time thinking about how to reinstate voluntarily retired editors.

    Why?

Is this really necessary? How many editors will it ~actually~ affect? And is there really an editor who is SO busy that they can't check in once a week? I mean, what... is someone going to move to a mud hut in the middle of the desert where there's no internet? Really?

Even if it's necessary, it certainly isn't more important than fixing the bugs that have infested this site for years.

And that alone makes the conversation ridiculous. It should not be taking place.

More editors need to tell the staff this rather than weighing in with a yes or a no, and their ideas of how to make such a low-priority idea work.

Last night I was tootling around on YouTube, watching videos for the J-pops that I don't get to listen to so much any more. Then I wandered into '80s territory, watching the videos for Pop! Goes My Heart from Music & Lyrics... just a model of '80s music, even though, technically, it's not. My question on this video is this: whose butt is whose? I love this video, really, I do. That 'motorcycle move' thing that they do is priceless.

That then led me to watching some ~real~ '80s stuff, like When In Rome's The Promise, and Modern English's Melt With You, as well as the always fantastic Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode, back when Vince Clarke was with them. This video is the one that the Music & Lyrics one reminds me of. From there, I moved on to other Vince Clarke stuff, including the definitively fun Take A Chance On Me with Vince and Andy Bell in full ABBA drag.

But then it happened... I typed a band name into the search box, and I was completely surprised at the number of results. I clicked on this one and then just sat there, in shock and awe...

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
    Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

I don't think I was breathing. Really. The Bay City Rollers. I haven't seen them, heard of them, thought of them in ages. But there they were, just as I remembered them. And I ~do~ remember them.... every word, evidently, as I sat there singing along to Rock 'n Roll Love Letter, which I haven't heard in a good 30 years or so... let's see... 2008 - 1976 = yup, 32.

    Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Okay, originally, I was a Derek fan, but then switched my allegiance over to Woody, the bass player. Don't know why. Don't know why Eric's soulful baby blues didn't do anything for me, either.

And then, the song... oh, my. Wouldn't You Like It?... only available on an import disc from the UK that I saved my money to buy. The raw sexuality of it all... and I remember every word. And, of course, who could forget the one that started it all, SATURDAY Night.

I don't think I've started breathing yet. How can I? I remember buying 16 Magazine, and reading all the latest on them. The first concert I ever went to was when the BCR played at the CNE in Toronto, and I made my friend go with me... we screamed ourselves hoarse. I remember when Allan quit the group, and Ian took his place. Then Ian quit, and Pat replaced him, but by that time, their star was waning. And then someone broke into our house and stole all our records, including all my BCR albums, and when we got the insurance money, I didn't replace them.

Watching the videos again really takes me back. And, you know, they weren't so bad, really. The songs are catchy, Les was a good singer, and hey, everybody needs a little plaid in their lives!

Watching: The 6 p.m. News on CTV.

Sushi anyone? I've now reached the lofty heights of level 52, Guzzlefish, and the emblem looks to be a lovely piece of maguro sushi, one of my favs. Maguro is tuna, which I much prefer to salmon.

Halloween is upon us, but I doubt I'll be dressing up. I have to work, so I guess I could go as someone who hates their job.

I've been watching 24 recently, and I just finished watching season 1. Wow! Yup... the longest day of Jack Bauer's life. It was absolutely fantastic, right up to the 8 - 9 p.m. episode, when everyone suddenly turned stupid! That's the hour where Lou Diamond Phillips (Richie Valens) dies... because Jack gets stupid! Really, I couldn't believe that one. I mean, there's Jack with Victor Drazen as a hostage, and Victor's son with the nameless warden (Phillips) that Jack just met 5 minutes ago as a hostage, and they're both threatening to shoot their hostages. "Drop you weapon or I'll shoot!" Okay...

See, the thing is, Jack has the upper hand. He's got the hostage that matters. Who's this other guy? No one. He doesn't even officially exist! All right, he exists, but his job and his work place don't. Yet Jack puts down his gun. Then the son shoots Richie Valens. Good for him, I thought. Utterly predictable, I thought. Why didn't Jack see that one coming? I thought.

And then in the next hour, Jack grabs a waitress and holds her hostage. He threatens Drazen saying that he'll kill the waitress if Drazen doesn't drop his gun. And I sat there thinking, 'yeah, why would he believe you, Mr. Empty Threats?' Then Drazen did the one thing that actually made me cheer out loud. He shot the waitress. Good for him. Now there's a man who knows how to get the job done, even if he is channeling some weird Speedy Gonzales accent.

And Kim... don't get me started on Kim. I just had to wonder if Elisha Cuthbert had any complaints about playing such a stupid and self-centred character?

But otherwise, I really liked it, and I'll be moving on to Day 2 for Jack. I traded my brother-in-law my Heroes set for his first two seasons of 24. Not a keepsies trade, though. He's got season 3, 4, and 5 as well, but he got season 4 while he was in Australia, so unless I get an all-areas dvd player, I won't be able to watch it. I really should get one, as I need it anyway, since I have about 100 area 2 dvds from Japan.

So the whole thing with all that shooting in 24 made me wonder about my "moral ambiguity". See, I would never think that shooting someone is right, or a good thing to do, but then again... there are just some situations, where, if you're going to do your job right, you have to shoot people. And that whole hostage situation with Jack and Victor Drazen was one such situation. Jack wasn't doing his job right.

First song: Shingo Mama no Oha Rock.

The title of the blog is from the warning that runs before The Sopranos. I love that warning, which is, in full: This program is not intended for children. It contains scenes of violence, extremely coarse language and nudity. Some adults may be offended by the content. Viewer discretion is strongly advised. I think the only warning that I've seen that's better is the one that runs before Nip/Tuck, and while I could look that one up, I just don't feel like it. I think the part that I like best is that they say that some adults may be offended... that just means it's going to be a good show, in my opinion!

So the Emmys were last night, and I was in one of the chat rooms for a bit (hi Kimba! ), but since my computer and my tv are in different rooms, it was a little difficult, so I signed out of the chat room and just watched the show. There seemed to be a bit near the beginning that got censored in the States, but not in Canada. My favourite part... Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy. I'll bet there's been lots of people who have wanted to do that (whether the winner was there or not), and the pure joy that Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell displayed was just priceless. And the look on James Gandolfini's face when James Spader won Best Actor/Drama... well, that was pretty priceless too.

Otherwise, there's not too much new around here. The new season is about to start, and some of the shows look interesting, although I have to say, the more I hear about Gossip Girl, the less likely I am to watch it. I don't think I'll be giving Private Practice a go, since I didn't like the 2-hour Grey's that spawned it, although with my track record of watching shows that get cancelled, maybe I should do the world a favour (as Midi and I sort of decided we'd do) and watch/love it, so it will die a quick and quiet death.

Corner Gas starts season 5 here in Canada next Monday, and started airing in the States last Monday (previous seasons). And the big news here is that while the Number 1 comedy in Canada still doesn't have a banner after five years (yet shows that died a quick and quiet death like Drive (four episodes), Smith (three episodes), and Heist (five episodes) all do), we at least have a picture! Way to go staff! It's small, it's non-clickable, but it's there! Maybe now that it's on in the States, it will finally get a banner. We can only hope.

    Watching: The Sopranos, "Marco Polo".

So I've been reading some stuff on the site... summaries for shows that I watch, and what I've noticed is that I'm seeing a lot of subject comma verb sentences. I don't get it. Where did these people learn this? 'Cause it's wrong, so wherever they learned it, they need to go back there and tell the person who taught them that they don't know jack. I don't mean in a simple sentence like 'Bob goes to the store' being written as 'Bob, goes to the store.' But still, even when there's a complex subject, there's still no reason to put a comma there. So I'm seeing sentences like "The boy in the blue shirt, goes to the store." Or, "The boy and girl, go to the store." All of which are wrong.

Have I bothered to correct them? No.

Although there was one thing that I corrected earlier today. It was a biography for someone that (a) had been cut'n pasted from another site; and (b) was written in something other than English. Not a foreign language, you understand. Just... Not-Quite-English. My favourite sentence was this: "When ran out, he streamed upon slapstick." I kid you not. A staff member approved that... and if anyone here can tell me what it means, I'll give them $5.00! American! None 'o that funny Canadian stuff, really.

Otherwise, well, not too much is new. I read the final Harry Potter (aka: 'Hally Porter' in Japan) book, and could have lived without the 19-years-later epilogue, but overall, it was a pretty good ending to the series. I haven't yet seen Stardust, but I want to. I finally got my computer fixed by just wiping everything and reinstalling the OS. Best Buy wanted to charge me $60 to do that... which is to say, they wanted to charge me to ~not~ fix my computer, and they also wanted me to supply the OS discs. Hmmm... okay, so no, I got my nephew to do it instead. And that's about all that's new!

May 9th was McHappy Day, and all across the country, local celebrities were at McDonald's helping out for charity. They announced here on the CTV news that Tom Brown would be doing the News at Noon from the McD's near where I live. Now, I don't normally eat Big Macs, but I figured that it was for charity, so I'd suffer through one. For charity... right!

So off I went, and when I got to the McD's, I found that various people were there, most of them from CTV... people like Ben Mulroney and Zack Werner and past Canadian Idol contestants Rob James and Chad Doucette. I got in line and ordered my Big Mac.

Zack Werner was standing there; he started talking to me. For those of you who don't know, and I'm assuming that's pretty much all of you, Zack is the Canadian version of Simon Cowell. He's our brutally frank, to the point Idol judge. So he started talking to me, and being weird... which wasn't unexpected, really. Anyway, he asked if I had anything interesting in my purse, which I had put on the counter... I didn't get a chance to answer.

Later on that day, I was talking to my sister-in-law and mentioned that I'd been at McD's, and that Zack had served me (okay, he was nearby when I was served!) She said she'd seen it on TV, and asked if I knew anything about that poor woman whose handbag he wanted to go through, and then asked what on earth was going on with the boomerang?

See...here's what happened: Zack inquired about my purse, and I didn't get a chance to answer because Tom Brown appeared from out of nowhere, and was on camera. He smiles into the camera and says that Zack is working the till. Zack says that he's not working the till, but he was just about to go through the till, then adds that he was just about to go through 'this woman's purse' (that's me). Tom asks if Zack is a good worker, and Zack says no... in fact, he's bad. He proceeds to yell at the customers in line, telling them all to get lost. He then tells Tom Brown that he was about to go through my purse, and asks me again if I have anything good in it. I say no, but then tell him that I ~do~ have a boomerang. He immediately takes it and makes it look like he's going to throw it. The whole thing was very odd, and I'm not quite sure how Tom Brown got out of it.

As for me, well, my food came, Zack gave me back my boomerang and I left. It wasn't until my sister-in-law mentioned it that I found out that I wasn't on camera at all... not even the back of my head! Too bad. But my boomerang was on TV! That's almost famous!

    .....

What was I doing with a boomerang, you ask?

It's a fashion accessory! Everyone will be carrying them soon! Really!

Okay, but the truth is much more boring. It was a gift for my niece, one that I'd bought a few years back when I'd been in Australia. I'd always intended to send it to her, but it doesn't fit easily into packaging. So I brought it from Austalia to Japan, and then to Toronto, where it was packed up in a box for a few years. I recently came across it, and thought that it was about time that I give it to my niece. That's why I had it... I was on my way over there when I stopped in at McD's.

    Currently watching: TAR, season finale!

So I went to see Spiderman 3 yesterday. I tried to get into the 3 p.m. showing, but it was sold out. So was the 3:30 p.m. showing. And the 4 p.m. But I got into the 4:30 p.m. showing, and it was full. The theatre I was at has ...I don't even know how many auditoria it has, but the entire second floor, with at least 6 auditoria, were all showing Spidey 3.

Anyway, I got my Spidey popcorn, and my Spidey Coke, and let's not forget my Spidey cherry Nibs... and that all cost more than the ticket for the movie! Grr! And I sat through the commericials and the promos and all. And then I sat through the movie.

Meh. It was okay. The action scenes were pretty good, but the rest of it... well, it really could have benefitted from some editing. I mean, really... there was a scene where MJ and what'shisface, James Franco, are in the kitchen at his place, and they're cooking, then they start dancing. And I was honestly thinking, "Man, this really should have been in the 'deleted scenes' section of the dvd!"

    That's bad.

There's another part where MJ meets Peter on the bridge in the park. That scene had the guy beside me moaning and groaning. He had his sweatshirt pulled up half-way over his face, and was making little moany sounds during the scene. At the end of it, he said to his friends, "Man, that was some bad*** acting!" And he didn't mean bad*** in a good way. I started laughing my head off when he said that, 'cause I'd been thinking pretty much the same thing.

There's also just too much crying in the movie. And shoot me, but I just couldn't stop thinking of Eric Forman every time Eddie Brock/Venom was in a scene.

Overall, it was an okay movie, not worth the $20 that I spent for the ticket and snackies. If only I hadn't spent 12 bucks on pop/popcorn, maybe it would have been worth it!

    ***SPOILER***
  • 26Apr 07
First song: Promiscuous (2006) by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland, from the JUNO Awards 2007 Album.

What are weeks 19 - 27 you ask? And well you might. Let me tell you. For the last 19 weeks and counting, I've been reading the same book. The same darned book. It's The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror 2006, 19th Annual Collection. I have no idea why it's taking me so long to read it. Normally, I'm a quick reader. I honestly don't know what the problem is here; it's a good book. But I took it out of the library way back when, and it sat around, unread, until shortly before the due date. When I realized that it was due in a few days, I feverishly began reading. I renewed the book (the original check out was 3 weeks, renew for 3 weeks) and then breathed a sigh of relief.

    And put the book down.

A few weeks later, I realized that it was coming due again, and once again, began reading madly. I renewed the book, yet again, for another 3 weeks. Unfortunately, you can only renew a book twice, which means that you can have it for 9 weeks total. I did.

I returned it after 9 weeks, and re-requested it. I got it just a few days after returning it, and the whole process started again.

This most recent time, I returned it a day late after having it for a second 9 weeks (oh, a 30 cent fine!) and then went home and re-re-requested it. My on-line library history told me that it was available for pick-up the very next day. You see, I got the same copy that I'd just returned! So I now have the book for the third time, weeks 19 thru 27.

27 weeks is 6 months. Half a year. That's a long time to be reading one book.

    *sigh*

In other news... I just found out this morning that Drive has been cancelled. Midi was right... why start watching something that FOX will only cancel? Why does this happen to shows that I like? Why doesn't FOX give shows a chance? What is wrong with these people? Why does FOX even bother buying new shows anyway?

And on American Idol last night, they had the SHOCKING results... no one goes home. But next week, two people go home. I taped the 2-hour special, and watched it all in about 15 minutes. Gotta love that fast forward button! I think the only bits that I watched in its entirety were Jack Black and The Simpsons. Other than that, well, I just listened to a bit of Jeff Beck playing guitar, then fast forwarded through what'sherface singing, listened to bits and pieces here and there, and fast forwarded through all the 'please donate' bits. I loved that CTV had a viewer advisory at the beginning saying that the show was not intended as a solicitation for people outside the US.

First song: Beloved (1996) by Glay.

I've dated a number of guys... not a huge number, just a normal number, mind you, ...and for the most part, most of them seemed to have what I think is a common guy-ailment. They can't remember birthdays. The first time that it happens, they offer the same lame excuse (it must come in the 'Guy Handbook of Lame Excuses' or something): 'I'm just not good with stuff like that.' Or they'll say, 'Hey, I never remember ~anyone's~ birthday!' Or the always popular, 'I'm just not good with numbers and dates together.'

    Like that makes it okay.

It doesn't. And what makes it worse is that at some point later on in the relationship, the two of you will be watching some sports event, or he'll come home from work and talk about some sports event, or he'll just be shooting the breeze with some other guy friend, and you'll hear it: he'll start spouting off sports stats about his favourite player. When and where he was born, the exact date he was drafted into the majors, batting average, RBI numbers (or whatever, depending on the sport) the date and place where the player hit that famous homerun, who the opposing team was, and what the stadium attendance was that day!

A musical interlude while I take a deep breath: Shingo Mama (2000) Oha Rock
    Must... obey... man... in dress!

Okay, I'm back. So yeah, he knows all that. He ~can~ remember dates and numbers together. Just not ~your~ dates and numbers! And I have a theory on this, which every guy I've ever dated has said isn't right, but what do you think they're going to do... admit that I'm right?

    Never.

So here's my theory. These guys can remember dates and numbers. IF those dates are I M P O R T A N T to them. For some reason, most of the guys I've dated just haven't seen fit to include my birthday (or various anniversaries) into the 'important' category. They deny this. Of course they do. Admitting that it's a valid theory, or even worse, that it's specifically correct in their case, would mean that they're jerks who just can't be bothered to bump my birthday (or me) into the 'important' category.

    A second musical interlude: B'z (1995) Koigokoro
The lead singer's really cute... I can't remember when his birthday is (if I ever knew!)

And another one from B'z, just because: (1995) Love Phantom.
It's not every guy who can pull off the shiny vinyl pants, but believe me, Inaba can pull them off any day! And check out those shorts!

So I created this easy mnemonic for everyone:
    Valentine's Day: 2/14
    White Day: 3/14
    Stiggy Day: 4/14

After that, well, who really cares what happens on May 14th?

    The Von Bondies, C'mon, C'mon

And I chose that song because M_M was talking about Dennis Leary, and the Song That Must Not Be Named (a great song), and the show Rescue Me, and this is the theme song for the show.

So how was your Fertility Festival? Did you get lots of eggs?

Mine was okay... usually my family gets together at one sibling's house, and we consume large quantities of food (turkey is a given) while talking at high volumes. This year, however, no one seemed to want to host the feeding frenzy, so my mother suggested that we all meet at the Mandarin restaurant in the city where she lives, and we had the chow-down there.

Before going in, I was opining that it wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese restaurant had sushi. It did. I find this funny. I guess it's not quite as funny as it would be if it were in China or Japan, but it's still kind of funny. They also had pictures of geisha on the walls. I suppose most people wouldn't even pay attention to that, or particularly notice that anything were wrong with it if they did notice.

You see, they really ~do~ all look the same!

    Yes, I said that.

I have/had this friend (I guess 'had' is the correct word, since we've fallen out of touch since both of us left Japan) who is from the Prairies in Canada. She's originally from Korea, was born there, but her family moved to Canada when she was young. I met her teaching English in Japan. I think of her as Canadian. I always forget that she's Korean. So when we were both in Japan, we'd get together on our days off... we'd arrange to meet at a train station (that's standard for everyone!), like Shinjuku Station, or Shibuya Station where we'd meet at Hachiko. Half of Japan meets at Hachiko.

And I'd forget that, and arrive and start looking for her. Then I'd remember... she looks exactly like everyone else there! No point in me looking for her; she would have to look for me. I was the one who stood out. After a while, I got used to that, and I'd just bring a book and stand somewhere out in the open at the station and read until she found me.

Even the Japanese people couldn't tell the difference. I had so many students who would tell me that they could tell a Chinese person from a Japanese person from a Korean person. But they couldn't. The number of times that my friend was mistaken for Japanese was funny... to me. Not to her, because, of course, they'd start talking away to her in Japanese, assuming that she understood, since she was Japanese and all. And she'd be left with nothing to say other than 'wakarimasen!' which means "I don't understand!" Unfortunately, it also means "I don't know." So if they had asked her a question like, "what would you like to order?" (in a restaurant) and she'd answered "I don't understand" but they thought she meant that she just didn't know yet, and needed more time. Hilarity ensues. For me, as I said.

The truly funny part was that for quite a long time, I spoke and read better than she did. Yet the people in the shops would always talk to her, and she'd be totally lost. It ticked her off, because she had the same number of students who would tell her that they could tell the difference between the nationalities.

Moral of the story: after a while, everybody starts to look the same.

Okay, so I know we've had some CP bugs running around, and yesterday, missribs posted a blog saying that the CP bug would be fixed. So today, I was looking around, and noticed, yeah, there are shows where my points hadn't moved in a while, and now I've been bumped up. Bumped up to where I probably should be... or so I thought until I looked at That 70s Show.

Hmmm... there, I used to have 3,909 points. I remember, 'cause I just looked the day before yesterday, and then again yesterday, and they were the same both days, and shouldn't have been. I should have had 3,910 yesterday, 'cause I added one spelling correction on a quote.

Today, though... well, today, I have 7,820 points! Yes, exactly TWICE what I think I should have. It's not just me though, it's everyone on the Top Contributors' list. Everyone got double the points. I just hope that some user doesn't see that and report me (or anyone else) for gaming.

The same seems to have happened on Robson Arms, Corner Gas, Degrassi High... well, is it safe to assume that it happened on ~all~ shows? I haven't added anything to Degrassi for quite some time, so how my points there could double is beyond me.

Well, Haru no hi was my guess for March 21st, the first day of Spring, but that's not what it's called. According to a quick googly-search, it's called Shunbun no hi. It's a National Holiday in Japan. So's the Autumnal Equinox. Ah, I miss those days of numerous and random paid holidays.

There's not really that much new around here... bugs abound, but that's not new. The Corner Gas season has ended, so I'm at a loss for Monday night TV. The official website for the show has also ended the games for the season (well, the games are still going on, but you don't win anything for playing them). I got three props from the show in the auction that they had there; one coffee mug and two 'newspapers' used in two different episodes.

Robson Arms is still on -- the second season there started in February, and they've had a couple of 'special airings' (for ratings purposes!) which means that their 13-week schedule is a couple of weeks shorter now. I got my sister-in-law to watch a couple of episodes of RA and I think I scarred her for life. See... one of the cast members from Corner Gas is in it. (Actually, two, but Lacey/Bobbi/Gabrielle Miller wasn't in the episode we saw) And this cast member from Corner Gas is just a little bit different in Robson Arms... he grows... stuff in his apartment, and sells it by the nickel bag. And in the episode we saw, that was exactly what he was doing. A woman (another tenant in the building) was trying to buy weed from him, and my sister-in-law was just shocked that Hank (Corner Gas)/Nick (Robson Arms)/Fred Ewanuick (reality) would do something like that.

Things only got worse when I told her that the woman trying to buy the nickel bag was the Philly angel. She didn't understand at first, so I explained that the woman in question was the Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese Angel. Buying weed. From Hank. That was just a little too much for my sister-in-law. She refused to believe that it was the Philly angel until I showed her the profile for the actress (Linda Kash) on imdb.

Yup, I read it on the internet; it must be true!

Otherwise, well, I'm just sitting around, watching American Idol and wondering when Sanjaya will finally be voted off. It seems that Howard Stern has taken an interest in Sanjaya (in a 'vote for the worst' kind of way) and has his listeners voting. *sigh* His rendition of The Kinks' You Really Got Me was just horrible, yet here he is, not even in the bottom two this week. Maybe next week, after he slaughters another song, maybe then, he'll be voted off!

I've started watching Bleak House on PBS on Saturday nights. The first part was 2 hours long, and was quite engrossing... surprising, since it's about early 1900s Chancery Court. But the acting is excellent, and the girl playing Esther is absolutely perfect. I was quite surprised when I looked it up on imdb... yeah, yeah, what about tv.com, you ask. Anyway, I looked it up and found out that Mylady Dedlock is played by Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame!

It is so good, in fact, that I went out and bought the book. And what a book! It could be used as a deadly weapon, believe me! But I got a really nice edition for a paltry $5.00 -- it's a British edition, and the original price on it was 25 pounds (which is about $50), so it was quite the deal.

And I have to run, run, run, because LOST is on RIGHT NOW!!! It's currently 7:02 p.m., and it's starting! I know, it's not on 'til later in the US, but that's the thing with CTV; they mess around with schedules, and we get various shows a little earlier... Medium an hour earlier, Studio 60 a whole day earlier... and tonight, LOST a couple of hours earlier!

I don't know if this is noted in the guide for Studio 60 or not, but in Canada, it's broadcast on Sunday nights. So I've seen the most recent episode, Monday (1).

I wanted to write a review of it tonight, because it made a fairly strong impression on me, but I can't do that, because the airdate is tomorrow. And I know that I'll forget by tomorrow, so I figured I'd do it here.

If you're a fan of Studio 60 and want to be surprised tomorrow night, I'd suggest you stop here and come back tomorrow....

Since I'm on Filmspot, I figured I'd do a movie blog.

One of my favourite movies is Field Of Dreams. I have a theory about Kevin Costner... it's that he can't act. Don't get me wrong, I think he's great in FoD; I just think he's not necessarily acting. I think that Kevin Costner is a guy who likes sports, is maybe not all that bright, and loves his family. The character in the movie is a guy who likes sports, is maybe not all that bright and loves his family. Not a stretch. The best movies that Costner has done are where he plays that type of character. Bull Durham, Tin Cup... things like that.

But my theory on FoD is that everyone is dead. Okay, not ~everyone~, but more specifically, that Terrence Mann is dead. The three people that Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) meets and helps in order to reach the goal that eventually helps himself are: Shoeless Joe Jackson (dead); Terrence Mann (?); and Archie "Moonlight" Graham (dead). Helping them leads him to his father (dead).

Ray meets Terrence at his Boston apartment; Terrence threatens Ray, but Ray tells him just enough to get Terrence to agree to go to a baseball game with him. There they see the scoreboard light up with the info about Archie Graham, and that leads them to go looking for him... in Minnesota? Where ever, it doesn't matter. While they're in Moonlight Graham's hometown, Ray reads an article in the newspaper saying that Terrence Mann is "missing." His father reported that repeated phone calls have gone unanswered. Terrence picks up the phone to call his dad, and Ray leaves the room; the camera follows Ray. Both Ray and Terrence drive the VW minibus that Ray owns both on their way to see Moonlight Graham, and on their way back to Iowa.

Now, I've said before (in other forums) that I thought Terrence was dead the whole time; the response I usually get is this: "dead men can't drive a car!" Yes, that's true... but not in this movie! Because, you see, dead men can't play baseball either, but they do that all over the place in this movie, so saying that a dead man can't drive a car does not follow the logic of the movie.

Here's my theory. Terrence Mann was in his Boston apartment, alone. He doesn't go out much; we know that. He died, alone, possibly in the bedroom, or some room in the apartment that we (and Ray) don't see. Ray knocks on the door and Terrence's ghost answers, because that's the type of thing that happens when Ray is around (Shoeless Joe: It was you, Ray.) The ghost of Terrence goes to the ball game; the ghost accompanies Ray to Archie Graham's hometown. When Ray sees the article in the paper that Terrence Mann is "missing" it's because Terrence's dad has been phoning for days or even weeks... and Terrence didn't answer, because he was dead. Terrence says that he'll call his dad, but we don't see him make that call -- that is where the camera follows Ray as he goes out (and eventually meets Doc Graham.)

Because Terrence started out outside the ball diamond, he was the exception to the rule that the dead couldn't step outside the diamond. Shoeless Joe wouldn't cross the line; when a young Archie Graham crossed the line, he turned back into the old Doc Graham and then retired to the corn field. But Terrence was always outside the line. He went into the corn field, but we don't know if he ever came back out. Question: if Terrence was dead, why didn't Annie say something when she met him? Well, again... we don't know if his body has been found yet. Since she didn't say anything when meeting him, I have to assume that his body hasn't been found at that point.

Terrence is invited into the corn field by Shoeless Joe; this happens, and can happen, because Terrence is dead. When Ray asks why he's not being invited, well, this is one reason why. Ray isn't dead; Ray can't go into the corn field.

I think the arguments against this theory are mostly along the lines of, as I already said, "dead men can't.... whatever" Terrence opens the door; dead men can't open doors. Archie Graham opens the door to his office when he first meets Ray Kinsella; young Archie Graham opens the door to the VW Minibus. Terrence drives the car; dead men can't drive cars. True; and as I said... dead men can't play baseball either, but they do here. They swing, hit, throw... and even do the Heimlich Maneouver. I think it just makes more sense in the movie if Terrence is dead; why would Ray have all that interaction with dead people, and then have one person in the middle be alive? It just makes no sense. And really, who else could help him reconcile with his dead father, other than dead people?

So there you have it, my theory that Terrence Mann is dead the entire time we see him in Field of Dreams.

First song: "Hide & Seek" by Imogene Heap, 2005.

Another amazing song... find it and give it a listen; you won't regret it!

The Haul: yes, the Christmas prezzies. Oh, how I hate lists. I mean, I love lists... I make them all the time, because "organization" is my middle name. Yes, that's right; Stig "Organization" The Magnificent is my name. But I hate it when I have to provide a list for Christmas shopping -- I mean my list for them, so they know what to buy, because otherwise they're clueless. And I hate having to ask for a list as well, but that's only done in absolute dire circumstances!

But I did it this year for the family name-draw. Why not? It solves everyone's problems; the person buying doesn't have to wonder what I would like, and I end up getting something that I ~do~ like (and want) so we all win.

    So this year's haul...
From Happy: I got the gift of literacy. Happy got me a book that I've been meaning to read: The Year's Best SF, Vol. 11. I've read all the others in the series, and just hadn't gotten around to this year's yet. How did he know? And without a list too!

From RJ and Xander: I got the gift of music. RJ (and Xander, although cats aren't usually allowed to go shopping, nor do they want to... they prefer people to just bring them things!), knowing my eclectic musical tastes, got me a 25-pack of CD-Rs so I can make my own cds. What a great idea! And again, without the use of a list... how did he/they know?

From my family member who had my name: I got the gift of entertainment. I had sent a note through the grapevine that I wanted Mirrormask, the movie by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, and lo! I got it! It's a fantastic movie, in every sense of the word.

There were also assorted chocolates, and an orange in the stocking (as well as a toothbrush! Could that have something to do with the chocolates?)

As for what I gave, well, I gave a book to the person whose name I got, as well as an origami calendar that I made myself (it's what I do in my free time, because I love driving myself crazy). I've given the calendar before, and my family is amazed by it, because it's ...well, it's difficult to describe. But it makes the mind wobble to see it, I know that. Basically, it's like a book, and when you open it up, it's got the first six months there, then you open it the other way and it's the other six months. Magic! Presto! Yay!

I also gave assorted chocolates, random dvd Christmas movies (The 50th Anniversary of The Grinch, anyone?), and ...things.

It's about the getting, not the giving! What did I give Happy and RJ? Well, you'll have to ask them!

I must go eat some chocolates now... and watch some dvds that I got in Boxing Day sales -- Dead Like Me, both seasons, only $20 each!

Listening to: Christmas songs in general...

Yes, everybody knows a turkey. Of course, there's more to that line, but I like to end it there. Do you know which song it's from? The one, the only, A Christmas Song by Mel Torme and R. Wells. It's also called "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" I believe...

The verse actually goes like this...
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe Help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight

After hearing Christmas songs pretty much constantly from the beginning of November (it was this way in Japan too), I need to amuse myself. So I just belt out the one half of that line, then smile quietly to myself.

And then, randomly, because it doesn't get played at Christmas, I also like to belt out this line:
    Oh, we like sheep!

Again, I stop there. It makes me laugh. It's lyrically correct, although not grammatically, and it's from The Messiah. Don't you think that would make a wonderful tabloid headline? "Christians gleefully admit, "we like sheep!"

The real line, from The Messiah, past the Christmas part and into the Easter part is, "Oh, we, like sheep, have gone astray." But commas aren't really all that important, now are they?

Other than that, the only thing that remains for me to do is sing along with the songs/carols that are playing and just sing them in Latin. It's fun!

    Somnio candidium diem...
    or
    Rudolphus, naso rubro,
    Naso nitidissimo!

    or
O! Parve vice Bethlehem, quam iaces tacite
    Te contemplantes deorsum, priterunt stellae

    Everybody sing!
    deinde ante natalum,
    Santa venit et,
    "Tu, Rudolphe, naso nitidissme,
    Traha meum duc nacte!"

    Happy Holidays everyone!

First song: "Wouldn't It Be Good" by the Danny Hutton Hitters (from the Pretty In Pink Soundtrack), 1986.

I've always liked that song. Interesting lyrics; you should look it up! It's a remake, but a pretty good one. Who did the original? Nick Lowe? Geez, if only there were some way for me to find out...

Let's see... December now, and I totally missed November. I was here, but annoyed, and thought it better if I didn't blog. I'm still annoyed, but what the heck.

On Corner Gas website news, after getting the coffee mug from the one episode, I also bid on and got a "Davis International Protection League" pen, from yet another episode. That one hasn't arrived yet, but I'm hoping it will show up soon. Along with the t-shirt that I won playing Prairie Scramble! Yay me!

They kept making the game harder (how do they do that?), and then, of course, there were people who showed up and seemed to be getting ~unnaturally~ high scores. They'd log on about an hour before the game would reset for the week, play five games, get scores in the 150s and then go away. It turns out that I'm lucky to have won the week that I did, as there's no way I would have won in any of the subsequent weeks, what with (a) the better players who showed up and (b) the cheaters... um, I mean, "unnaturally high score-getters" who showed up.

Otherwise, well, it's December, and the weather is turning horrible. It's pouring rain today, and the temperature is dropping, so there are sleet/ice warnings out there. The police have set up their annual RIDE program; unfortunately idiots still drink and drive, and just two days ago some moron, driving home drunk, hit a woman on the sidewalk. She was jogging, and near her home; her husband is now a widower, and her four children are without a mother. On the news, the husband said that he'd given the police a picture of the four kids and he wanted them to give that to the driver of the car, so that everyday, he could look at those kids and know that he killed their mother.

Wow... that is ~so~ not where I was planning to go with this. But, well, now that I'm there, I guess there's really no place else to go, so I'll end now.

First song: "Soul To Squeeze" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1993.

You know, the only good thing about the movie The Coneheads was the RHCP song..., and it's pretty much the only good thing about the soundtrack too. Thankfully, they put it on their Greatest Hits compilation, so I've got it on cd finally. I love the song.

My sister and her daughter... yes, that would be my niece, are visiting from British Columbia, and I've shown them around in downtown Toronto a couple of times. We spent the day downtown yesterday, and we were going to walk from the Eaton Centre over to Chinatown HERE, but as soon as we exited the mall, it started snowing!

    SNOWING!!!

So my niece didn't want to walk in that kind of weather. She's from B.C. That pretty much explains everything, really. She's not used to this kind of weather. So we went back into the mall, and then went to visit my brother, and out for dinner at a Chinese restaurant near his place. It snowed again while we were walking from his house to the restaurant. October 12th. Snow.

    *sigh*
