Random thoughts and movie reviews
In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. -Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Well, I've been at college for about a month now, and it's really changed video game playing for me. For one, I have both much less and much more time to do it. Paradox? Yes. But true.
The fact is, I have a lot of free time. I'm only taking 13 hours of classes, which is not a heck of a lot. However, I'm also in a play (The Laramie Project) which requires four hours of rehearsal daily besides Saturdays. So, I should be spending most of my free time during the week studying and memorizing lines, which I am really lacking on at the moment. But, like a normal college student, I procrastinate by playing video games.
This has become a problem, but I have found a solution:
Use video games as a reward system. Which means, don't play that next level that's crying your name until you've finished reading that chapter that's whispering it from under your bed.
It may seem simple, but it works. Yes, it's tedious to have to stop every time you just finished an amazing level in The Force Unleashed (review coming soon) to force yourself to go back and read a chapter, but when you're done, then you can play uninterrupted. Now I know some students don't have much homework, so they may finish a game entirely between assignments. But if most of you have a backlog nearly as big as mine is, this shouldn't be a problem.
Also, video games are great socially. Now, I'm not one to put video games before going out or hanging out with my friends, because keeping a good social network is essential for survival at college. But I will often find myself just chilling in my dorm playing Twilight Princess (review coming soon) and having a few people watch in just to watch.
I used to think that coming to college I wasn't going to have time to play video games, and my favorite hobby was going to disappear from my clutches. But I'm very glad to discover that this is not the case.
So, this may be old news to some people, but being a freshman here at TCU, it's a pretty awesome revelation to me.

So, I got Grand Theft Auto IV the other day, like every other gamer who knows anything about quality did.
First of all, this is so far the single greatest video game I've ever played. I can literally just stand there in game and find something to be entertained by, whether it be watching someone walk by eating a hot dog and seeing there mouth actually move, or watch a cop chase a gang member down the sidewalk. As fun as it is to stand there, playing the game is ten times as exciting.
Of course, the video game gods would not be so kind as to let this travesty of complete gaming euphoria to go unnoticed, so my 360 decides to go into hardware failure.
This is the second time this year I've gotten the red rings of death, and it really makes me mad. Especially when I was in the middle of a really badass high speed chase! Some people just turn the console back on and live with the random turning off of the console, but I can't.
Oh well, I guess I'll send in my 360, along with my Rock Band drums, which have been broken forever and I am dying to play.
Oh, and go see Iron Man. Even if you aren't a fan of the comic, it will be worth your while I guarantee it. 10/10.

Rock Band is simply one of the best party games I've ever come across. If you're a solo gamer, then it's still worth getting the drums. As a former drummer myself, itactually makes me want to go out and buy a real drum set (which it encourages you to do while playing). For solo play, the guitar part isn't as incredible as GH3, and the singing part is just awkward alone. But for small and large gatherings alike, Rock Band will never fail to be a hit.
I did have one of the malfunctions highly talked about; my drum pedal snapped. But the website has a great automatic system and I should be getting a new pedal within the next two days. In the meantime, I can always beat it on guitar.
I highly recommend putting this game on your Christmas wish list.

Short Summary: Bruce Willis + Justin Long + awesome action = *drools*
Review: I reluctantly went to the midnight premiere of this movie last night; reluctantly because I had work this morning and let me tell you I'm tired as sin right now. But it's dang well worth it to be tired for what I got to see last night.
Let me start off by saying that I'm not the biggest Die Hard fan. I've seen the movies, but it's been a while andI don't remember enjoying them too much. This movie, however, was a 2 hour explosion of... well, awesomeness, for lack of a better word. It was good old John McClane meets cyber terrorism. He partners with hacker Justin Long to help defend America.
There aren't many words besides awesome I can use to describe this film. The acting was great, the comedy was hilarious, and the action was at par, if not better, than any other action film of the day.
Some people might be angry because of the much talked about censorship of the famous line, "Yippee ki yay mother f*****," I say that it was tasteful. It got the point across, and it allowed an entirely new age group of people to see a true American hero in action. Granted, McClane doesn't say f*** a thousand times like its predecessors, but one gets the feeling that the character has matured and maybe softened with age a little bit, so it's ok.
I'm not going to give you any spoilers, because this is a movie you need to go see for yourself. You will not regret it, I guarantee it.

IMDB Score: 7.9/10
My Score 9/10
Short Summary: A solid Stephen King film that does justice to the horror film genre.
Review: First off, if you're looking for a review that compares the movie to the book, then this is not it. I have not read any of Stephen King's books nor do I plan to. But as a stand alone project, 1408 is a very entertaining film that is well worth the money spent to get in theaters.
The movie is a pyschological thriller that keeps the audience guessing, for the most part. While there were times where I could obviously see what was coming next, there were others where I thought I had it figured out and I was smacked in the face with a surprise that changed everything. Combined with excellent acting, big name stars, a well written script, and the screams of everyone else in the audience, this movie lives up to Stephen King's previous works.
*SPOILERS*
The movie starts off introducing John Cusack's character. The movie does a good job of making the audience empathize with this character from the get-go, and it makes it all the more horrible for the audience when he seals his impending fate by checking into room 1408. His character is a paranormal investigator/author who writes about haunted places for his readers. He receives a postcard one day from the Dolphin Hotel in NYC that simply says "Do not enter 1408." Good advice, if you ask me.
Of course, the movie would go no where if he didn't check into 1408. A brief but solid performance from Sam Jackson, playing the hotel manager trying to convince Cusack not to stay in 1408, further draws the viewer into the story.
The thing I loved most about this movie was the fact that it didn't go for the blood and gore scare tactics a la Hostel and Saw. It chose to go with good old shocking moments. However, my favorite scary scene had no scare to it at all. Cusack's deceased daughter appears before him, "alive," and starts to hug him. Everyone in the audience is touched... and then the daughter simply falls limp. Dead. Everyone in the audience was expecting her to turn into a zombie child and scare the bajeezus out of everyone, but this much simpler tactic sent shivers down my spine and everyone in the theater was quiet, mouths open. It was a kind of horror that movie-goers nowadays aren't used to, and that is why I absolutely loved it.
*END SPOILERS*
All in all, if you're looking for an exciting night that will have you at the edge of your seat, I definitely recommend this movie.
In other news: Playing through God of War 2, I'm about half-way through. I also saw Evan Almighty. It was good, but I'm not going to write a review. I'll give it an 7.7/10. Good movie for the family to go see together.
That's all, folks.

I don't understand why, but everyone is so riled up about the whole Manhunt 2 controversy. My reasoning is it probably deserved its rating. I didn't play its predecessor, but it's been compared to Hostel. I hate Hostel with a fiery passion. On Conan O'Brian Last night John Cusack called it Hostel "torture porn". I agree.
Now, I'm not going to say that I hate the Manhunt series, seeing as how I've never played it. As a matter of fact, I enjoy the Saw movies very much, and it has also been compared to those films. Now, the only reason I like Saw and not Hostel is because people really do get tortured, but I've never heard of a case of an old man forcing people to play a game for their lives. If there is, sue me, but I still enjoyed Saw.
What I'm trying to say is, Manhunt 2 is a game. It's not nearly as bad as a movie showing murders in my opinion. Is the AO rating fair? I don't know, I don't work for the ESRB. I didn't see the game in action. Obviously it must be a tad bit hardcore if the ESRB is willing to go that far. As for Take-Two's decision to take it off the shelves, I say it's a good move! It's their only move. All that will happen is that they will tone down the game just enough to still dance on the edge between an "M" and "AO" rating.
And I don't want to hear the whole bulls*** saying, "Oh, but people will imitate what this game does! Especially kids!" It's been said a thousand times on the boards and in blogs, and I'll say it one more. It's the parent's responsibility to make sure that their kids don't play it, not the ESRB. And if an adult is messed up enough to imitate something in the game, then they were messed up enough to do something horrible in the first place.
So my opinion? In the end, Take-Two will come out on top. Why? This thing has given them a crap load of publicity. People will buy this game out of curiosity; and also, there will be the hardcore gamers buying Manhunt 2 when it comes out to make it a bestselling game and shove it in the face of the ESRB. Boo yah!

What's New: I recently traded in Oblivion for my 360 and got it for the PC. It's pretty cool, but I'm having problems getting the mods to work and it's going to take time for me to get used to the controls.
I also go Forza Motorsport 2 and God of War 2. I have to say I've only been able to play Forza for about thirty minutes, but I'm pretty impressed with it thus far. And God of War 2? Well let's just say if I didn't have work this morning I wouldn't have slept last night.
On the Agenda: No more new games in store for this week, the three new ones I got pretty much ate up my GameStop credit. I really want to see Mr. Brooks this weekend, and Evan Almighty when it comes out.
I also want to get two new CD's. I still plan on getting Icky Thump by The White Stripes, and I plan on getting something by Blink 182. Don't know why, I'm just feeling nostalgic. Do they have a greatest hits CD?

...on God of War. Well, I guess technically it's Hades. But whatever.
I finally got farther after beating the freakin' Minotaur which gave me GAS back in April. I picked it up yesterday and played through, right up until the part in the underworld where I have to climb the freakin' rotating tower of blades. That got annoying fast. I plan on tackling it when I get home from work, though.
So, now I have a conundrum. Before, I had said I would get Forza Motorsport 2 on Friday upon receiving a paycheck. But now, I'm not sure whether I should do that or get God of War 2. If it's nearly as awesome as God of War then I know it's a good buy. So you tell me, which one should I get?
Stevenscott14's blog convinced me that my next CD purchase will be Icky Thump by The White Stripes. Can't wait to get it!
And so continues another long and uneventful day at work. Hurray.

w00t! New tag, now I'm neighborly. Also been fooling around with the tagging system a little so maybe I'll get thebeginners badge for that, too.
Today I got two new CD's, The Ramone's Greatest Hits and In with the Out Crowd by Less Than Jake. The Ramones CD is amazing, but I'm a littledisappointed with the Less Than Jake CD. Oh well, you win some you loose some.
Anyway, I've decided to hold off on Twilight Princess and Oblivion, and to get Forza 2 after I finish God of War. I've heard so many great things about this game I don't think it's possible to ignore it much longer. Maybe after I get paid on Friday I'll go pick it up at GameStop.
Tomorrow I might go watch Mr. Brooks, so maybe I'll write a review of it on Wednesday if anyone wants me to.
That's all for now, leave me some love.

The whole family came over today to be with my dad (who is the head patriarch of our family I guess). After exchanging gifts (I got him the first season of Rome, since he is a huge history buff), my nephew and I decided to play some Gears of War.
We picked it up and started playing on easy, and didn't put it down until we beat it. That's awesome for me, since it was one of the games on my backlog list.
Now, I just have to decide what game is next on my list. I'm going to choose between Twighlight Princess or Oblivion. I think I might beat God of War first, since I got a bad case of GAS near the end.
So which one should I beat first?

I sold all of the following games at GameStop a little bit ago:
The Thing for PS2
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for PSP
The Sims 2 for PSP
Crazy Taxi for PS2
Resident Evil Outbreak for PS2
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for GC
WWE WrestleMania 8 for GC
The Hobbit for GC
Madden 02 for GC
Luigi's Mansion for GC
Super Mario Sunshine for GC
Splinter Cell Double Agent for WII
The Urbz for PS2
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for XBOX
Ghost Recon 2 for XBOX
I also sold my XBOX and 4 controllers because I have a 360.
Now, either I sold these games because I had beaten them and were bored with them (Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, THUG 2, THPS 3), I didn't like playing them (Ghost Recon 2, The Urbz, Splinter Cell Double Agent, The Hobbit, Wrestlemania 8, Crazy Taxi, RE Outbreak), or they belonged to my ex-best friend whom I now despise (The Thing).
I don't think I sold my soul... but I wouldn't be surprise. I've never sold a console before, or that many games at one time for that matter. Oh well, what's done is done.
In other news, I got a new badge today (Good Taste). I think it's because I sold a few games with low ratings so they're out of my collection now, and I also added a few older ones that had some pretty good ratings.
And that's that for now, adios.

Summary: Very good, minus one small scene...
*Minor Spoilers*
So, I just saw Knocked Up starring the always funny Seth Rogen and the always sexy Katherine Heigl. This movie had all the hilarity of The 40 Year Old Virgin (which is good, seeing as how both films were produced by the master of comedy, Judd Apatow) with a good helping of emotion.
The film opens with a cheesy "let's get to know the main characters" sort of montage, but ends up being quite hilarious.
The movie isn't all laughs, though. The sex scene is a little graphic for younger audiences. Combined with all the vulgarity that might seem a bit excessive even to an adult audience, it's no wonder the film was rated "R".
Another surprising aspect of this movie was the fact that it is quite touching. I truly felt bad for both of the main characters when they were fighting with each other, and found myself calling Katherine a b**** out loud upon throwing Seth out of the car at one point.
Near the end of the movie, I was quite happy with it. I was thinking to myself, "I'm going to go home and write a review and give this movie an 8/10. Then, the aforementioned scene played out. During the scene where Katherine's character is giving birth, you literally see the crowning of the baby. Now, I'm not generally a squeamish person, but I definately did not expect to go into this movie and see... that. It truly turned me off to the whole movie and it's surrounding hilarity. Granted, this probably won't have the same effect on everyone; some people are probably fine with watching the whole thing and finding it all natural. I, however, am not one of those people. And if you aren't either, then you might want to be prepared for that scene.
If you enjoyed The 40 Year Old Virgin, I definitely recommend seeing this film.
In other news, I reccomend everyone read Wootex'sblog about purchasing games. I found it very agreeable.
Until next time, this is Rouge_Hunter, saying... bye.

Wow... I can't believe it's only Tuesday. It feels like I've been working for a whole week. I guess that's the price you pay when you work two jobs. This week I'm a counselor for a commercial/theater camp that my drama teacher is putting on. I work that from 9-1 (and trust me working with 10 year olds is work). Then, I got straight to my dad's office and work in the tech department until 5. Thank God I don't do much in there, seeing as how there's not much for me to usually do.
This is generally when I find time to post on GameSpot. I logged on today and found a new badge. It says I'm a "hella old-school" gamer. I have no idea why I deserved that, seeing as how the oldest games I have are from the NES maybe and I don't even know if I have it registered on my GameSpot account. Oh well, I won't complain.
I know I said I would start reviewing movies, but I haven't had time. I'm going to go see Knocked Up tonight, so maybe I'll review it tomorrow at work. But for now, I've been sent on a delivery mission.
Adios for now.

It's been a while, but since I'm starting work, I have a lot of free time on my hand during the day. Might as well scroll the forums and write reviews while I'm at work, right?
So I've been a bad gamer lately. I rarely play games anymore, until recently. I traded in about 8 old XBOX and PS2 games at Gamestop and that paid for a Battlefield 2142. It was love at first intro screen.
I've only had it for a few days now so it wouldn't be fair to write a full-fledged review, but so far my first impression is that it is a little above the par that Battlefield 2 set in my heart. I'm not that great at it, but no other game gives me the rush I get when playing.
I haven't been playing the Sims as much as I used to. I guess I won't really get back into it until Bon Voyage comes out, but even then I seem to have lost interest in the game; I just don't see the point to it anymore I think. Then again, is there a point to any game? I guess at least in Battlefield you can rank up and feel good about yourself when you get a headshot. But for the Sims I just don't get that same sense of satisfaction anymore. Maybe it's because it's not a challenge, but who knows.
I guess for now I'm just going to keep playing 2142 until I get sick of it. Oh, and I'm also looking out for an online RPG that's worth my time (WoW, Guild Wars, Vanguard, and LOTRO are not), so leave me a message if you know of a game that might be worth it.

Ok, my mother woke me up this morning at around noon (I was up until 5:30a.m. last night so that's pretty darn early for me), because she needed me to follow her in my car so I could pick her up after she was done dropping off her car in the shop. Afterwards we went and had lunch with my sister at Red Robin (mmm) and then we went to Best Buy (it's right across the street so why not?).
Now, I don't know if this was a result of me waking up early, or her wanting my (now) old computer, but she decided to buy me a nice new Gateway PC!
Compared to my old '02 HP system, this thing is God-sent! It has an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphics card (just right for BF2), 2GB of RAM, 300GB hard drive, 2.12GHz, and Windows XP Media Center (which works perfectly with my sattelite TV and is great since I don't have TiVo).
I was going to wait until Vista came out, but this is fine with me! Besides, I'm having the Vista Beta 2 shipped to me anyway. Now I just have to figure out a way to get all of my songs from my old computer to this one...

I just went through every single game that I own and added them to my collection here on GameSpot, and I noticed that I'm missing a crapload of games. I really need to stop letting my friends borrow my things...
Anyways, seeing how it's been a while since I've posted a blog I guess I'll ramble for a bit. I've decided that I'm not going to get a new computer until Vista comes out.
I've also gotten a 360 since I last posted. It's been keeping me busy. I've noticed though that they don't have many good 2 player games that aren't shooter. I mean, they do, like racing and stuff, but I don't know none of them seem to interest me too much. If anybody know of any good multiplayer games out or coming out soon let me know.
Oh, and if you've been holding out on buying any 360 games (or any games, for that matter) until you can get a good deal, GameStop is having a buy 2 used games get 1 free deal. I got 3 360 games for about $95, good ones too (FarCry Predator, Perfect Dark Zero, PGR 3).
That's all for now, folks.

My computer is about 5 years old now, and it's starting to show it's age. It runs most of the games I play fairly, but it has decided that it doesn't like mouses or keyboards anymore, and that it will start to shut down on me periodically.
Solution: I'm getting a new computer. This, however, presents a new problem. I don't know what kind I should get. I need help in deciding, so if anyone has any suggestions on a good computer that I should get message me. My spending limit is between $1000-$1500 and I want it to have have Windows Media Edition and it needs to be a desktop. No monitor needed, mine's fine (27" flat screen-lcd).
So far I really like the Dell XPS 600 and this really small one from Best Buy (can't remember the name). If anyone can help me in choosing I'd be gratefull.

Well, I might as well review some games. I have to say, the most recent games I've played are Age of Empires III and Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
AOE3 is by far the best PC RPG I've played, especially in the AOE series. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is amazing, and so is almost everything about this game. The thing I love the most is that not only can you get better and keep enhancements from your "home city", but so does the computer AI. I have not yet played online yet, but from what I've heard its really fun. This is a great lan game too. I've had a few friends over to play it with me before and it's just a damn good time.
As for Battlefront 2, I'm still in shock. I love it. The feeling you get when you jump 50 feet into the air with Yoda and slice down a droid is unforgettable. The space combat is pretty easy to learn compared to other games I've played and it's also quite fun (not a fan of space combat). Get this game, the campaign and multiplayer can keep you occupied for a long while to come.
Also, I recently got the 10-day trial version of World of Warcraft. I was skeptical at first, considering I've played many MMORPG's that always come short in the end (SWG, Guild Wars, TSO, few other cheesey ones). However, this game is really easy to learn, and so far there isn't a moment where I haven't had fun. I invited a friend over and after she downloaded the game, we were playing it together and we were both having a blast. Blizzard's going to be having two new customers pretty soon.
