Just tried out the demo for NHL 13 and I gotta say i'm pretty impressed. New physics engine works really well and is actually very realistic. Being able to skate backwards with the puck isn't a huge innovation for the franchise; as many hockey fans will tell you it was something they should have added a while ago. It does, however put a new spin on the level of creativity the player has while handling the puck especially once you get good at the deke system (which hasn't changed from previous installments). The graphic detail is fairly striking, especially for gamers like me who didn't play a lot of NHL 12 since it was pretty much NHL 11 with a slight graphic upgrade. Overall I'd say NHL 13 will be nothing short of another successful installment in EA's hockey franchise.
