All About Premier1101

  • 15Aug 08

    This is my sweet farewell.

I decided to not make a new post, rather just update this one.

I have now decided to leave permanetly. School, work, gaming and friends. GS has lost its luster. I have a great community and friends from here, but I dont want to stay anymore. Too much time involvement and too much crap from the past being here. Good luck to all of you guys, and expect a video goodbye before account deletion comes along.

I also have a u-stream account and broadcast for guitarhero now. I plan on getting into that pretty much alot when GHWT comes out, so if you want to check it out: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/premier-and-stuff

    Foxhound's thing

    from foxhound_fox

I put this little guide together after being requested to repost my old one from 2007 in my blog. I've noticed there are a lot of posters here on Gamespot that struggle with quoting and I hope that I can teach people the art of the quote.

    THE BASICS

First off is the basics of the quote coding itself:

This is the most important part of the quote. The "QUOTE" text can be either UPPERCASE or lowercase, it does not matter, just as long as the five letters Q-U-O-T-E are in there. Understanding and memorizing this key sequence is well, the key to successful quoting. You can either copy-paste this information from the text you are quoting or type it in yourself. Such as if you want to quote a non-Gamespot board source and use the fancy quote box to display the quoted text you want to display.

    Speaking of the quote box:

    ***SPOILER***

    Simple enough.

The most important part of quoting is understanding the complexities of the coding. Here is what you get when you push the "QUOTE" button (The "QUICK QUOTE" button provides a quicker posting efficency but you cannot use advanced techniques with it). It is an updated and much more hilarious rendition of what a simple, 4x quote pyramid looks like highlighted in bright colours that distinguish each separate individuals post:

    ***SPOILER***

The major technique in basics is the highlight and delete. You want to eliminate all the text that is irrelevant to your post to keep it neat and spiffy:

    The highlight:

    ***SPOILER***

    The delete:

    ***SPOILER***

There is simple quoting in a nutshell. Beyond cutting down pyramids, these tips and techniques don't help much when you start adding more than one quote from more than one poster and responding to them separately... which brings us to...

    ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

    TECHNIQUE #1

Now comes the much more difficult problem of what to do when you want to avoid double, triple or even quadruple posting. Combining separate posts with separate responses into a single post in the neatest way possible. This is a little more difficult because it requires a lot more than just highlighting and deleting of text. It involves quoting several posts at once (tabbed browsing helps a LOT) and copying separate pieces of text and putting them all together in a single post.

Here is a random selection of user posts from OT in a thread about television shows. I only use it as an example because it is very simple:

    ***SPOILER***

Here is the four messages quoted into a new post preview:

    ***SPOILER***

*Notice* the parts highlighted in the dim yellow lines. The double spacing in the text editor produces a large gap between quotes because they are pre-programmed to make a space after them when the post is sent through.

The next step is writing your responses to these quotes you have decided to respond to. *Notice* the spacing of where I write the response after each quote, if I double space in the editor, I will end up getting a large gap between my response and the quote box. This of course is purely aesthetic:

    ***SPOILER***

All of my responses have been highlighted in green.

    TECHNIQUE #2

This copy and paste technique can also be used to cut apart a single, longer post where you can respond to each section individually instead of trying to use colouring or bolding/italics/underlines to separate your response from the quote and making you responses clear and visible.

Here is an example of what to do when you face a wall of senseless text and you need to figure out what is worth responding to and what is not. It makes your post take up less room and give you the ability to respond to what you want instead of quoting the whole passage and only responding to one idea:

    ***SPOILER***

Of course, the first thing we do is highlight and delete the wall of senseless jibber-jabber and figure out what and how we want to respond to what we can. Now I have determined which parts of this quote I wish to respond to (highlighted in separate colours as they will be split into separate quote boxes):

    ***SPOILER***

Now we go about taking on the task of separating out what we want to respond to:

    ***SPOILER***

Now around these new separated pieces of text, we add in the quote tags with the proper username (just copy and paste the main one you get from hitting the quote button). Again, *Notice* the large spaces left from double spacing in the editor:

    ***SPOILER***

Now type in your responses and hopefully, you can keep the fanatics at bay while they are struggling with trying to make the quotes you just made work for them:

    ***SPOILER***

There we are. Two advanced techniques that I hope will help you in making your posts neater and more succinct... which here on Gamespot, is something that everyone likes. Everybody, even myself, hates the giant wall of text.

I tried to make it as non-complicated as possible to avoid confusing anyone.
