My Friends

5Feb 09

Hello everyone! It's nice to see you all again!

How have you all been? Life has been pretty busy for me. I've started my second semester in my first year in high school and the teachers aren't exactly going easy on us now that we've got a taste of what it's like Regardless, everything is still extremely manageable (it's still the first year after all) and I'm doing pretty well. Once again, I'd like to apologize for not keeping you all informed with what I've been doing. It wasn't school that kept me from blogging though. I actually made several attempts to blog but Gamespot was being stupid and made it impossible for me to hyperlink anything. I made two huge blogs only to realize that they couldn't be posted because of some random error. Oh well, ast least I'm posting now

As you might expect, over the long period of time I was away, I accumulated a few games. Some old, some new...all for handhelds and the last generation of consoles (since many of you know that I still don't have that PS3 that I covet so greatly ). Since I realized just how many video game series I missed out on during the last generation, I decided to pick up one of the more "legendary" ones.

God of War
sgdf

While roaming around the nearby major mall, I decided to go around and hunt for rare games (ICO, Shin Megami Tensei, etc.). Unfortunately, all the video game stores I stumbled upon were all chains (EB Games, etc.) so I didn't find anything that I was particularly looking for. I DID however stumble upon a $15 copy of God of War (Sheesh, I thought that it would've dropped below $10 already considering how popular it is and how old it is ).I remember seeing some clips for God of War 3 on Gametrailer's "Top 10" Countdown of their most anticipated games in 2009 and I thought to myself that the series MUST be good and decided to initiate myself into it by buying the first entry.

Well...after playing it...

I'll be as honest as I can here. Despite all the major praise it gets, I just thought it was OK. I have no clue why I didn't find it as amazing as everyone else does. Maybe it's because the gameplay mechanics feel dated at this point or something (4 years is a pretty long span of time in terms of gaming evolution if you think about it) or maybe I've lost my taste in action adventure games I just found the combat boring. Sure, it was really satisfying and interesting ripping apart enemies the first few times but it got kind of tedious.

The game did have its great points though. The concept and overall $tyle is really great. I loved meeting representations of greek gods and having them give me new powers (not enough times to keep the combat fresh for me though...). The graphics overall are also impressive for a game released in 2005. Character designs are nice too and Ares looks absolutely terrifying. Unfortunately, I didn't like it as much as I expected I would. I'm currently in the Desert of Lost Souls which is apparently before the major parts of the game so hopefully I get the motivation to play the game again and finish it!

Hotel Dusk: Room 215

fhjf

Meanwhile, I decided to order Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the DS (the new Touch Generations reprint with a rather ugly label covering the upper part of the cover) on Amazon. I haven't played much of it (I only completed the first chapter) but it's definitely interesting. I got my first game over though because I made a wrong choice when talking to the hotel's maid and got kicked out So I'll probably be using a Spoiler-Free Walkthrough when playing this just like a lot of other adventure games I play.

Eternal Poison

sdfgsdfg

Being the rather big Atlus fanboy that I am, I decided to order this from Amazon as well. For those not in the know, Eternal Poison is a game developed by a rather unknown company (here in North America anyway) called Flight Plan. Atlus decided to take the liberty of localizing it and it came out late last year (November 2008 I believe). Since it came with free shipping and a soundtrack CD with 25 tracks (all of which are now ripped into my computer), I decided to get it.

I must say, this game was a pleasant surprise. When IGN gave it a 3.5 score (I do admit that I barely listen to scores, but I do at least get cautious when a game gets rated that low) I was kind of hesitant to buy it but now that I have, I can't help but say I'm glad I didn't listen to their review. All the criticisms were very subjective and I found myself enjoying this quite a bit. I would recommend it but...

It's definitely not for everyone. First of all, this game is quite difficult. It's not difficult in a broken way, but it takes some time getting used to the entire system and the enemies can make your characters drop dead within a few attacks. I liked the difficulty though and it was interesting seeing how much I've become more skilled with the whole battle system ever since I started. It's also particularly interesting how each character's story is relatively short (below 10 hours even) but there are different routes that you take which can only be completed through your second playthrough (which is considerably easier). I've only really touched Thage's storyline (there's two others) but I assume it works the same way for the other characters.

I particularly liked the graphics and audio. The 3D character models, I will admit, look pretty substandard but the 2D art is gorgeous. The music is fantastic as well. There's lots of atmospheric music in there (filled with chanting and whatnot) together with lots of loud guitar and fast-paced beats for the battle music. The story is pretty nice too and I love having Thage as a main character. She's pretty unique and despite the fact that she does have some cleavage, she barely ever uses it in a seductive way and is pretty straight-to-the point. The player might even show some conflict with her decisions at the beginning of the game making her a bit of an anti-heroine.

Well, it looks like this is turning into a bit of a rant Regardless, if you're interested in something different, try out Eternal Poison. Be really cautious about doing this though as it may not be your type of game at all (and I doubt they'd let you rent it considering how there's a Soundtrack CD in there that anyone can steal).

Reviews

Over my long absence, I've made two new reviews.

Unfortunately, because Gamespot is being stupid, I can't make any hyperlinks and can't link you to them. So, if you want to check out my Persona 4 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes reviews then you'll have to scroll down to the bottom of my profile page.

Well, that's all for now! I'll see you all soon!

Long time no see, friend! ^_^ I'm with you on GoW. I also thought it was just okay but it was still a good game overall. I plan to try out some Atlus games this year.

Awesome people keep getting games. I've stopped I got Wario Land Shake It the beginning of last month but that's because it was on sale. I never go out to the store though so I never pass by a game shop or section as much as I use to.

Busy, busy Platy. Yay I didn't find God of War to be exceptionally entertaining either. I had to force myself to complete the game, which I'm rather glad that the game is short. Didn't bother getting GoW2, but I might get the PSP version just because I lack an action title in my collection.
For Hotel Dusk, good choice, but don't let the game drag on for too long. I had a hard time motivating myself to finish it, despite liking the game quite a bit. Also, I suggest you start over and not get a single Game Over. I heard there's a bonus scene in the end if you have a perfect run.

And Eternal Poison woo! I have it and yet to start. Haven't plugged in my PS2 yet in yonks.

Ahh....I hate when GS doesn't let you post because of some html error and it doesn't tell you what it is exactly. At least you got it up still. I'm totally playing some older games still too that I missed out on. And I'm loving them all. Glad to see you're having fun with your games too. And nice to see you like Eternal Poison despite the reviews.

Yeah, "busy" is a word I'm way too familiar with too.
I didn't think GoW was "revolutionary" in any way, with its short playthrough and so on. Nice to see I'm not so devious for not hyping my heart out for it.
Hotel Dusk was one of the best DS games ever, though. You're in for an unforgettable ride with plenty of replay value! Although you never know when the game might be over..
Too bad my PS2 isn't working anymore though. Eternal Poison seems so interesting. I'll be sure to check your reviews!

    Good to see you back.
I felt pretty similar when I first got my hands on God of War. It is a good game but I still feel it gets a little more hype and praise than it deserves. Although that is only my opinion. I prefer Ninja Gaiden when it comes to hack n slash action/adventure games.

Oooh, a 9.5 for Persona 4. I should start on it. It's STILL UNSEALED.

No worries, my friend. I'm just glad to see that you're back! Honestly, the games look good, but I never had an interest in GoW. I might check out Eternal Poison; I'm not sure though.

    I feel your pain. I too want a PS3.

Hehe, freshman, have fun in high school, I sure didn't.

Anyways, God of War is overrated, agreed. It's a great series, but it's nothing revolutionary nor extraordinary, I don't see why such a standard action-adventure game got so much attention. granted, the series is well polished and there are some cool moments, but overall, it's nothing super awesome.

As for Eternal Poison and IGN. Let me tell you something, IGN is bullsh!t. The reviewers all have bipolar disorders and severe mood swings which totally dictate how they review a game. Also they are a mega company and have $ signs in their eyes... I'm looking at that super early Killzone 2 review they churned out so quickly. Also, it was before the media embargo of the game was lifted as well, interesting indeed.

Next, they gave God Hand a 3.0, you know I don't care about scores, but the review itself is just bashing the game for the sake of bashing. I don't know about you, but God Hand is not a buggy, broken, or glitchy game to give it a 3.0. If the reviewer didn't have a shred of fun spanking people on the butt or launching people using barrel roll kicks, then I don't know what the hell is his/her problem. The game is pretty damn awesome as well and I really can't see the game getting hammered so badly like what IGN did to it.

It has flaws, and it's a bit rough around the edges, plus the whole pseudo-cowboy Japanese acid anime setting is really weird. Anyways, the slope of reason that I'm failing to reach is that IGN is garbage. They'll make concesions for some games' issues, but the same exact flaw in another will drag the game down.

    Yeah I'm done.

Just wait until your senior year of high school...You've already sent out your college apps so high school is now a joke. A perfect time for gaming!

If I were to play God of War, I also don't think I would find it too appealing. That kind of action game just hasn't been my cup of tea.

    N8A: Thank you!

soulless: We certainly haven't talked in a while You SHOULD try out some Atlus games! They tend to be very good (although not very mainstream) and the ones that they publish but don't develop can be a bit disappointing.

Minish: Wario Land: Shake It! looks pretty solid. I'd say that's a good purchase! I can understand those phases when you don't buy games for a long time though

mufujifi: You have the perfect description of how I feel about God of War. I sometimes feel like I'm "forcing" myself to play it. Oh well, hopefully I'll pick it up again one day and see what's so good about it!
Woo! Eternal Poison! You should try it out sometime soon.

jaykho: Yeah, give it a try. I didn't like it but it appears that lots of people do.

WhiteWolf: Ugh, tell me about it The blogs I made before this that didn't get passed because of some stupid error were LONG. It was quite frustrating. Good thing I got this one up! I'm definitely loving Eternal Poison. It's nice to be surprised once in a while

    tmaclabi: Thank you!

mattsn: It's good you enjoyed them!

HavQ: Agreed, I didn't find GoW revolutionary at all but still, it looks solid and plays pretty well. Hotel Dusk is nice so far! I just hate the fact that you can get game overs (which I don't find too good in adventure games). I have to repeat entire chapters sometimes

lightwarrior: I really need to check out Ninja Gaiden some day! I'll definitely pick up the PS3 remake of the first game when the time comes

Cantius: Make sure you wait for the opportune time to unseal it. Playing it before exams = death It'll take over your free time. Trust me

DesertClaw: We should make our own "We Want PS3s" club

grafkhun: Hmm, maybe he was in a bad mood when he wrote the review. Well, that isn't very fair to the game. I guess I'll just do my part and tell everyone how great I think it is

comthitnuong: That sounds nice! Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way around here where they keep track of your academic progress AFTER you've sent out your applications It doesn't look like I'll have that period of enjoyment

IpodHero: That sounds nice! I guess you just have to take a break from games for a while

Man, I haven't posted here in almost half a year...or maybe three months ago? Who cares, I'm old!

I have to honest, I've never finished the first God of War nor even had the desire to pick up God of War II because even with the over-the-top violence, graphical polish, and...other things...I just wasn't interested in finishing it. By the time that I reached Titan and the palace on his back and was stuck in the rotating hallways area I just didn't care anymore and turned the game off. There is SOME satisfaction in juggling enemies and finishing off a long combo string by slamming foes into the ground in their own red juices but about doing it one thousand times it gets boring.

However, games such as Eternal Poison have me interested in purchasing my third PS2 to pick them up, as well as Grim Grimoire, and Ogre Sphere. I may as well hold off because Vanillaware's Muramasa: The Demon Blade will be out in mid-March for Wii (which throws a huge wrench into the flood of DS titles that I want to pick up).

And yeah, for some reason when I posted my previous blog I kept receiving error messages regarding Gamespot's own links. They were links to DS games reviewed ON GAMESPOT. Because Firefox disallows copy/paste functionality for images unless you actually insert code and I didn't want to use Internet Explorer I removed the links.

I'm on vacation this week and may post something else later so see you around.
