Hello everyone! It's nice to see you all again! ![]()
How have you all been? Life has been pretty busy for me. I've started my second semester in my first year in high school and the teachers aren't exactly going easy on us now that we've got a taste of what it's like
Regardless, everything is still extremely manageable (it's still the first year after all) and I'm doing pretty well. Once again, I'd like to apologize for not keeping you all informed with what I've been doing. It wasn't school that kept me from blogging though. I actually made several attempts to blog but Gamespot was being stupid and made it impossible for me to hyperlink anything. I made two huge blogs only to realize that they couldn't be posted because of some random error. Oh well, ast least I'm posting now ![]()
As you might expect, over the long period of time I was away, I accumulated a few games. Some old, some new...all for handhelds and the last generation of consoles
(since many of you know that I still don't have that PS3 that I covet so greatly
). Since I realized just how many video game series I missed out on during the last generation, I decided to pick up one of the more "legendary" ones.
God of War
While roaming around the nearby major mall, I decided to go around and hunt for rare games (ICO, Shin Megami Tensei, etc.). Unfortunately, all the video game stores I stumbled upon were all chains (EB Games, etc.) so I didn't find anything that I was particularly looking for. I DID however stumble upon a $15 copy of God of War (Sheesh, I thought that it would've dropped below $10 already considering how popular it is and how old it is
).I remember seeing some clips for God of War 3 on Gametrailer's "Top 10" Countdown of their most anticipated games in 2009 and I thought to myself that the series MUST be good and decided to initiate myself into it by buying the first entry.
Well...after playing it...
I'll be as honest as I can here. Despite all the major praise it gets, I just thought it was OK. I have no clue why I didn't find it as amazing as everyone else does. Maybe it's because the gameplay mechanics feel dated at this point or something (4 years is a pretty long span of time in terms of gaming evolution if you think about it) or maybe I've lost my taste in action adventure games
I just found the combat boring. Sure, it was really satisfying and interesting ripping apart enemies the first few times but it got kind of tedious.
The game did have its great points though. The concept and overall $tyle is really great. I loved meeting representations of greek gods and having them give me new powers (not enough times to keep the combat fresh for me though...). The graphics overall are also impressive for a game released in 2005. Character designs are nice too and Ares looks absolutely terrifying. Unfortunately, I didn't like it as much as I expected I would. I'm currently in the Desert of Lost Souls which is apparently before the major parts of the game so hopefully I get the motivation to play the game again and finish it!
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Meanwhile, I decided to order Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the DS (the new Touch Generations reprint with a rather ugly label covering the upper part of the cover) on Amazon. I haven't played much of it (I only completed the first chapter) but it's definitely interesting. I got my first game over though because I made a wrong choice when talking to the hotel's maid and got kicked out
So I'll probably be using a Spoiler-Free Walkthrough when playing this just like a lot of other adventure games I play.
Eternal Poison
Being the rather big Atlus fanboy that I am, I decided to order this from Amazon as well. For those not in the know, Eternal Poison is a game developed by a rather unknown company (here in North America anyway) called Flight Plan. Atlus decided to take the liberty of localizing it and it came out late last year (November 2008 I believe). Since it came with free shipping and a soundtrack CD with 25 tracks (all of which are now ripped into my computer), I decided to get it.
I must say, this game was a pleasant surprise. When IGN gave it a 3.5 score (I do admit that I barely listen to scores, but I do at least get cautious when a game gets rated that low) I was kind of hesitant to buy it but now that I have, I can't help but say I'm glad I didn't listen to their review. All the criticisms were very subjective and I found myself enjoying this quite a bit. I would recommend it but...
It's definitely not for everyone. First of all, this game is quite difficult. It's not difficult in a broken way, but it takes some time getting used to the entire system and the enemies can make your characters drop dead within a few attacks. I liked the difficulty though and it was interesting seeing how much I've become more skilled with the whole battle system ever since I started. It's also particularly interesting how each character's story is relatively short (below 10 hours even) but there are different routes that you take which can only be completed through your second playthrough (which is considerably easier). I've only really touched Thage's storyline (there's two others) but I assume it works the same way for the other characters.
I particularly liked the graphics and audio. The 3D character models, I will admit, look pretty substandard but the 2D art is gorgeous. The music is fantastic as well. There's lots of atmospheric music in there (filled with chanting and whatnot) together with lots of loud guitar and fast-paced beats for the battle music. The story is pretty nice too and I love having Thage as a main character. She's pretty unique and despite the fact that she does have some cleavage, she barely ever uses it in a seductive way and is pretty straight-to-the point. The player might even show some conflict with her decisions at the beginning of the game making her a bit of an anti-heroine.
Well, it looks like this is turning into a bit of a rant
Regardless, if you're interested in something different, try out Eternal Poison. Be really cautious about doing this though as it may not be your type of game at all (and I doubt they'd let you rent it considering how there's a Soundtrack CD in there that anyone can steal).
Reviews
Over my long absence, I've made two new reviews.
Unfortunately, because Gamespot is being stupid, I can't make any hyperlinks and can't link you to them. So, if you want to check out my Persona 4 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes reviews then you'll have to scroll down to the bottom of my profile page.

Well, that's all for now! I'll see you all soon!
