My Wii Woes

This isn't another of those, Wii is just a gamecube with a new controller threads/Blogs.

I've had a lot of fun with my Wii, followed by a good bit of disappointment and letdown. In the end, I got exactly what I expected, and that's not a bad thing.

The ups

  1. Gameplay like No More Heroes
  2. Visuals like Galaxy
  3. Innovation like Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  4. Pointer Fun - Wii Sports/Zack and Wiki etc...

The Downs

  1. Bad VC picks...The gamers demand Operation Wolf?
  2. Hard drive, not an issue yet...But with Wii Ware and VC what are we supposed to do with it all?
  3. Poor Developing, Some games are brilliant...While others make me wish the Wiimote never existed.
  4. Limited Hardcore fanbase, great games that aim for us don't suceed (sales) like they should.
  5. Challenge...

I'm going to continue on Point 5. Challenge...This is my biggest complaint about the Wii. When I'm playing through games, or when I beat them...I never get that sense of accomplishment. Games are very very easy and forgiving. There are some exceptions to the rule, I love games like Trauma Center:NB and Zack and Wiki...they are Perfectly done and pose a real challenge.

Games like SSBB dip into the online, which I think is a great step. But again comes that sense of accomplishment, there's nothing to earn, nothing to gain, nothing to work towards. I like games that give back, Call of Duty 4/Rainbow Six Vegas2 games that try and reward you for your time.

I think the Wii has a lot going for it. I know everybody loves to trash it, but the criticism is warranted in a way. It really is a casual machine, from the local multiplayer with friends focus to the mellow online and then add in some games that are just too easy...All that together and you get a great console that's fun with a group...And I'd say in terms of the console that you can just pick up and have a blast with if you only have 30 minutes to spend, the Wii takes the cake.

If you're looking for a deeper more complex and challenging environment, depth wise and graphically. The Wii is a 3rd place console.

I bought my Wii by dumb luck. 1 Week before Christmas a shipment of Wii's came into Best Buy while I was standing there looking for a PSP game. I took it as fate, and I thought it would be a good way to get my Girlfriend into gaming (She thinks the 360 and PS3 are too complex) It worked out very well. Too well...Now she wants me to buy her a PSP But on the plus side she's moved on to trying 360 games.

So people can call Wii casual, but it's also a Casual springboard...Some people will stay casual, and others will move on to hardcore. But we all took that Springboard once, I took mine with NES and Atari. SSBB isn't my cup of tea, but I'm not going to trash the game for people liking it. So go easy on the Wii kids...remember...in the end, we're all gamers.
