Undying love for games
I wrote stories since an early age but never truly decided to become a writer until the age of about 16 or 17. I always believed it to be a fruitless endeavor. As most people who frequent this website, I've loved video games since I picked up a controller at a very young age and played a very simplistic version of Superman. Then it wasn't until I came to Canada from Brazil that I was able to experience the NES. Ever since then, it's all history. It has always been to my father's displeasure. "Video games are a waste of time!" "Do something better with your time." I didn't care, I was saving Peach, I was being a Bad Dude, kicking some Double Dragon NES style. Fast forward a couple of years and I stumbled on a PC game called Clive Barker's Undying. I loved the mood, I fell in love with the booklet. To think back, it was a funny thing to enjoy writing but not reading. Nevertheless, the booklet gripped me. I have no idea if Clive Barker wrote it or not, I didn't really care. I went to the website, saw him presenting the game "I'm Clive BAAKA..." in his growly english accent. I decided to look for his books. What can I say? It just clicked! I spent more time reading his books than playing games. I dove deep into his worlds and couldn't get enough of it. As a young writer I foolishly believed myself capable of writing stories in similar tones. We all begin there. His game became my door into a deeper, more cultivated world and thus opened my mind to literature.
Ever since I was young I believed games to be art. They inspire, expand the imagination, violent or not, they've served a purpose. My grandfather used to say "Have pity for people's ignorance." This statement rings true for all the people who cannot grasp the beauty and work that comes from interactive entertainment. Who here is not moved by Uematsu's songs from Final Fantasy 2 to Final Fantasy 7? Yasunori Mitsuda's masterpiece in Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Chrono Cross? Yoko Shimamura's beautiful piano solos in Parasite Eve? Michiru Yamane's eerie tunes in Castlevania SOTN? How about Ayami Kojima's breathtaking art for Castlevania? Are these not works of art? Music, paintings and drawings? The product as a whole becomes one by the conjunction of so many artistic forms!
It's not easy to love video games in the world we live in. It is mostly regarded as an immature hobby. Regardless, to each his own.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
"Just plain fun" Uncharted isn't a game that reinvents the wheel but it manages to capture a balance that feels satisfying. Continue »
