Dark-Souls-II-_zps81d4b164.jpg

When Namco Bandai stated last week that they'll be going in "guns blazing" and handle the upcoming sequel to their niche cult-hit Dark Souls as a "massive, massive" AAA release, it immediately put many Demon's / Dark Souls fans like myself on notice in regards to its future. The escalating potential of the series ultimately succumbing to a similar fate as that of Resident Evil, Dead Space, and all the other grossly misguided, bloated and compromised AAA commercial "failures" released over the last few years has become quite disconcerting for a good chunk of its modestly-sized yet fiercely dedicated fanbase.

In a recent post, Jim Sterling of The Escapist puts the legitimate fears of the game's fans and the broken mentality of AAA publishers into perspective quite well: click here for the video link.

There's not really much that I can add that wasn't pretty much covered in the vid. All I can say is that despite my mild amount of forced optimism, it's getting harder and harder to not see the writing on the wall. A part of me always knew the respectable success enjoyed by the series up to this point was like blood in the water, attracting industry sharks who would inevitably seek to devour everything that made these games what they were.. all for the faint chance of being the next mainstream approved clone of the current western-developed cashcows.

Aside from their growing number of overhyped failures, there is one thing that I can say AAA publishers have consistently succeeded at these days: making it loud and clear to any niche title's fanbase that their loyal patronage will simply never be enough. They've firmly established that it's just more important to them to risk everything in an effort to appeal to larger audiences that'll never actually give a sh*t about their games, than it is maintaining the fixed audience that actually does. To them, why settle on the revenue their franchises can realistically produce, when they can shoot for a grander piece of the pie they can never truly have outside of their own personal delusions?

This, so much.

Compare video games to comic books.  Both are niche industries, for whom 99% of the products produced will never, EVER gain mass appeal.

The comic book industry budgets according to its market, and while DC and Marvel have been bought out by larger companies, those companies have done nothing to the comic book arm other than to license out a few movie deals, and both Image and Dark Horse continue on, along with a host of smaller publishers who've embraced the comic book market and dedicated retailers.

By contrast, the gaming industry spends far, far beyond its means and, rather than accept the fact that they can't continue to spend half of Fort Knox on every title, blame everything but their own hubris for the stagnant sales: used games, piracy, Steam sales... They look everywhere but in the mirror and continue to spend amounts of money that would make Hollywood blush, to the point where successful games are called "dissapointing" because they don't single-handedly make up for a company's other, failed development projects.  *GLARES at Square Enix*  They openly try to sabotage the dedicated retailer, as if they expect to suddenly get TOP BILLING at Wal-Mart and Best Buy, which isn't going to happen for 99% of games.

And this is the demise of gaming.  Whereas the last gaming crash was caused because of lost consumer faith in the face of garbage releases, this one will be brought about by games that are too expensive to develop for anyone to make a profit.

And all because a few tech whores valued cutting-edge visuals over gameplay.

I fear that the Souls franchise will become a mediocre and linear shooter in the future, seriously. Like you've said, look at Resident Evil... :/

@FaeLKuN That would be an unbearable nightmare :( , but who's to say what the future holds at this rate. If someone told me ten years ago around the time the REmake was released on the Gamecube that Resident Evil would devolve into what it has today, I highly doubt I would have believed it. When thinking in those terms, I can honestly say that I don't even want to imagine how From's series could possibly be subverted 10 years after the sales success of Dark Souls.

You know what? I'm sick of ranting about how ****ing stupid publishers are. I'm sick of talking about how utterly retarded it is to throw 500+ people at a game and sink $50 million into marketing, creating a situation where you must sell 6 million copies to break even. I'm tired of *****ing about how this whole bloated mess destroys innovation and forces all AAA games to become a homugoneous mass to increase the chances of hitting the totally obscene and unrealistic expectations of narrow-sighted pubishers only concerned with the here and now.

Just watch this Jimquisition. He puts it better than I think I could of, and frankly I just don't have the energy to write a big rant right now. I'm gonna go play more Reus, a niche title from a small indie studio that realizes they make niche titles and are perfectly happy with that.

This. I wish I still had the energy or care to post another lengthy rant that fully explores my stance on the matter, but I haven't had enough in me for a while now. Much like what you plan to do instead, what little I energy I do have seems better spent elsewhere.

Watching Jim Sterling, or reading KingOfOldSkool cover the issue...wait, he chooses not to? Well, still not watching Jim Sterling.

@Foolz3hI actually do apologize for the lack of personal input on the matter, I can't say I'm feeling it very much these days. Normally a topic like this would have me testing the blog character limit yet again, but the industry's nonsense over the last few years has really worn me down. You can only feel like bashing your head against the same brick wall for so long.

@KingOfOldSkool @Foolz3h You're talking to the guy who never posted the completion of the GS revolutionary manifesto on the Soapbox. We all get worn down eventually.

@KingOfOldSkool @Foolz3h Well the minor fixes killed off half of its content lol, but as long as they don't bring back really old comments there's always a chance. Finding the time and effort to do it is the real issue. And the inspiration...but the whitewashing history angle could work given that a large portion of the readers on the soapbox are somewhat new to the site. Educate the masses!

@Foolz3h Oh yeah.. I imagine the odds of you ever coming around to that again being slim to none, huh? Damn. Oh well, those were definitely the days though, when the soapbox was actually still semi-interesting. I can barely even stand the crap I spew on there every few months anymore, that and the insufferable trolls they always seem to attract.

@KingOfOldSkool@Foolz3hYeah, it feels that we cannot stop that process, or even change it one bit. None really feels like talking about it anymore. (except J.Sterling perhaps) It's a lost case. An overwhelming final boss that throws at you Ultima and Meteor non-stop. All we can do is protect ourselves, and our wallet from all this.

I was so disappointed with New Super Mario Bros U as well.  Another cash cow game that is barely worth 30 dollars.  And of course Call of Duty: Ghosts has been announced for a November release.  Let me guess.  Laggy servers for the first two weeks with 3 overpowered weapons, 4 DLC map packs, and patches that compensate for the OP weapons.  You know what?  If it wasn't for Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, I wouldn't want a Wii U until Zelda comes out.  If all 3 next gen consoles were released, I'd go with PS4.

Great, just great...

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls series is one of the last games, if not the last, that I care about, games that I really look forward to playing and that I will buy as soon as there are new releases. If they somehow manage to destroy that wonderful game too, then I guess I will become an exclusive Angry Birds player and I will never be bothered again.

I still can't tell what an AAA game is. I have the suspicion it means a big expensive release with something offensive, excessive and ridiculous about it. At first I thought Dark Souls was a kind of AAA game in the sense that it was an ambitious game, did well in sales, had multi-player arenas and BS like that, had dlc later (it was there from the beginning disk locked..) At least compared to Demon's Souls it was a more popularized game and for that I love the first game more. But compared to other big (empty) games, Dark Souls is an oasis in the middle of the desert.

@RheinmetalI'm pretty much in the same boat. After the thorough desecration of the Silent Hill franchise, From's Souls games are one of the very few remaining series that I consider myself a true fan of. If the soul of the series (no pun intended) is siphoned away over time to match the major publisher's vision of what a true AAA game encompasses (whatever the hell that may actually be), I really don't know where that'll leave me in regards to gaming as an active hobby. I can't recall a time where I've ever been this close to being completely burnt out.
