My Friends

24Jun 09

As you probably know, I really like the Spore expansion pack, Galactic Adventures. I am pleased with the adventures I created (check out Perseus' Quest, which I think turned out well; too bad the Sporepedia hasn't updated yet with the correct number of plays and so on). I am now in the process of another one based on Korean legend, and can't wait to finish it this week.

But this is where you come in. Once I am done with the current project, I need a good idea for the next one--and I want you to be my muse. So come up with a little story idea. I'll choose the one I like most and seems most feasible to create, craft the adventure, and capture a playthrough so you can see how it turned out. Even better, I will send you a copy of Spore and its expansion, either a physical copy, or via Steam. (If you already own both or either, we can work out a different PC game). Here's the nitty gritty:

1. Give me a loose idea of a small game story that can be played through in around 10-12 minutes. It can be an original idea, a favorite legend or myth, a parody, or something else entirely! Feel free to be creative.

2. Just don't get too carried away. The Spore adventure creator has limitations, so I can't explore the seven levels of hell or anything. But it can have up to eight acts, and include combat, dialogue, fetch quests, and so on. But be as nonspecific as possible (rough outline), because the more specific you get, the less able I will be to create an adventure that intricate.

3. Reply here with your idea. I'll choose the one I like most based on a combination of how good it is, and how feasible it will be to create. Reply by July 1 at 12 PM (noon) Pacific Time, and you'll be eligible.

4. I will announce the winner in my blog. If I choose your entry, I will create it, and when done, I will record a playthrough and post it on the site. I will also credit you on the published adventure. And finally, I will send you a copy of Spore and Spore Galactic Adventures, either via Steam, or via snail mail. This will entail giving me either your Steam username, or your name and address. These would be emailed to me and kept private.

5. I like waffles. Mmm.

So that's about it. I look forward to hearing your ideas and bringing it to life. In the meanwhile, I keep my Twitter updated with all sorts of weird exploits, including Spore ones. And who knows, maybe I will like more than one adventure. If I do, I can't give the game to more than one person (how much money do you think i make!?), but I would certainly create your work of art!

You could make it based off of an adventure of the Vikings coming to America for the first time. The first part could be building the ship (fetch quest) and the second part could be a ship battle, or something like that, battle on the high seas if that's possible. If not, just ignore that. The act 3 might be landing in America and repelling the Indian invaders. (combat). Act four could be finding the legendary hammer of Odin (fetch quest with a little bit of combat). Act five and so on could be going back to the ship and coming home, but that doesn't have to be in there.

You should create an adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Unfortunately, I don't have Spore or it's expansion packs. Oh well. Maybe next time.

@nintendoboy16 -- You don't need them, good sir. The idea is you give me an idea, and you could win a copy of them.

An adventure about what happens whenever Chuck Norris fights Mr. T in a death match, and your adventure of trying to piece back together the universe.

Oh, ok. Disregard my last comment then. I'll get working on my idea.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Act 1: Set in a vaguely castle like building, with some vaguely knight-like creatures. Then the Green Knight enters. The player then fights him.
Act 2: The player must travel from Camelot to The Green Chapel. This should be through a forest, and a river crossing would be nice (the River Dee). This act should involve combat.
Act 3: The player arrives not at the Green Chapel, but at Bertilak de Hautdesert's castle. Bertilak asks Gawain to give him whatever he finds in the castle in exchange for whatever he finds hunting. This becomes a series of three fetch quests. The player must acquire first one kiss, then two, then three kisses from Lady Bertilak (Lady Bertilak should have a heaving bosom, if possible. Unfortunately, I doubt Spore can rival the breast physics seen in classics such as Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.) The 'kisses' could be anything really, use your imagination! On the third encounter she gives the player a green sash.
Act 4: I have no idea how the next bit could work. The player goes to the Green Chapel (this can just be some mossy rocks and a pond) and meats the Green Knight. Basically the Green Knight has to reveal himself to be Bertilak de Hautdesert... somehow.
Act 5: The player returns to Camelot and looks like a bit of a fool.

I'm not sure how feasible that is, and I'm sorry if the subject matter ether too dry, or too obscure.

It is the day of the Planetary Athletic Championships, and you and your rival are both eager to win the cross-country race title. Unfortunately, it would seem your rival is a bit unscrupulous...
Act I: While preparing for the afternoon's race, you find that someone has prevented you from leaving your training area (cave-in, bridge out, etc.), and you must find a way to get around the obstruction to the starting line.
Act II: Starting down the path to the race, you find that your rival has deployed some goons, just in case you managed to escape. You must either incapacitate them or escape them to proceed.
Act III: You don't have much time left! Find your way as quick as possible to the race start, before the event starts without you!
Act IV: You made it to the race, and you and your rival have put the competition well behind you. With only a little ways to go, finish strong, but stay as clear as you can of your rival... I don't think he's going to play fair! Cross the finish line intact before he does to claim your cherished victory!

I was reading through your twitter posts and came across this. Well, seeing how your adventure about Perseus ranked top on Spore community (Congratulations) and you working on a Korean folk tale, I guess you would love to try something historic or mythical. I don't have Spore or Galactic Adventures so I don't exactly know how much detail you could implement I'm writing by the rules you stated earlier. Im modifying history a bit. First it would be dialogue scene between Mark Anthony, Caesar and Octavius. Then maybe a fetch quest to get something for Caesar. Anthony comes back and finds Caesar killed. Then, a fight with Caesar's enemy. Another dialogue with Cleopatra now we ahead of time when he with Cleopatra, and a battle ensues with Octavius Caesar. After defeating him a fetch quest to get something for Cleopatra where Anthony dies after touching what he went to get maybe a poisonous potion or something. A mix of combat, dialogue and fetch quests - I tried to mix whatever I could while making it a bit different.

Charlie The unicorn based on the youtube video
act 1: two unicorns convince your character charlie into trying to go to candy mountain to find a special item. First you walk through a forest and find a leoplerodon or other dinosaur like animal. It says it will tell you how to get to candy mountain if you get something for it. fetch quest

act 2: as you continue on your path to candy mountain you cross a bridge but in order to cross it you have to defeat some monster. combat

act 3: you continue walking until you reach candy mountain. as you go into a the cave you must fend off the candy and then at the end you pick up the item. it could end here or you could add the clasic they took my freakin kidney idea. I would suggest goin on youtube and watching all three charlie and the unicorn videos because they all have adventures that could be turning into a spore adventure pretty easily if you wish you i can write more for the 2nd and 3rd adventure

How about The Lord of the Rings? An abridged version obviously - don't go all Jackson on it - but you could use the general format of the original - it's three volumes and six books: The Fellowship of the Ring (Books I, The Ring Sets Out, and II, The Ring Goes South,) The Two Towers (Books III, The Treason of Isengard, and IV, The Ring Goes East,), and The Return of the King (Books V, The War of the Ring, and VI, The End of the Third Age) - as a loose structure on which to base your adventure.
Or if the thought of that is a little intimidating, start smaller, and do The Hobbit instead.

Best party ever you try to help create the best party ever

act 1: You have to do a fetch quest to find some party items like a disco ball for example.
act 2: Your boombox is broken so you must do another fetch quest to find the parts to fix it.
act 3: Someone else claims to have booked the dance hall and you have to beat him in a dance contest to get the hall (if possible)
act 4: You must find and talk to other creatures in the area to spread the news of the party
act 5: Your are loosing party members to a rival party you must go and assassinate the host of the other party.
act 6: on the way back to your party the other party had the same idea to kill you so you get attacked/ambushed by the other party leaders and you must defeat them
act 7: you get back to your party and you win.\

How about an adventure based on Shadow of the Colossus. If it can't be made so that you attempt to revive someone with the death of the Colossi, you can make it so that you have to open the cage, barrier, locked object, etc by killing the Colossi. It would start with you talking to a NPC who is trying to review/release his love. Use 4 or so Colossi as 8 would be too much, and for the Colossi use the creature enlarger to make them BIG so they are like the Colossi. Also, on the way to each Colossi maybe a small challenge like a small bridge or curvy road, something to keep the travel interesting. Once you kill each Colossi you can either have it so a statue gets destroyed by the adventure NPC or if you can't do that you pick you a key or something dropped by the Colossi. Once you kill all four Colossi, you return to adventure NPC and some enemies appear, like 3-4, and you have to fight them off. Upon the death of those enemies the adventure NPC dies and the NPC you're trying to revive/release either comes back to live or is freed and they talk to you and the end. I'll just break it up in act form now:

Act 1: You show up and talk to NPC, he sends you to kill the 4 Colossi.
Act 1-4: For each one you kill a Colossi.
Act 5: You return and the enemies appear.
Act 6: Main Hero NPC dies and the NPC you're trying to help is free. Mainly dialogue here.

    Hope you enjoy

This could be a capture the plans sort of thing. act 1: You are told by General Womblesniver (just a suggestion) to find something instrumental too this war with another alien race. First, you have to find your informant outside the fortress (with a funny name) act 2: You find your informant who tells you of a secret way into the fort.

act 3: You have too get past guards, killing them, sneaking, etc.

act 4: You found the plans! but the enemy is alerted; you have to get out NOW!

act 5: You run, with the enemy close behind, and escape! General Womblesniver is waiting for you and a pitched battle ensures. (note: This act is optional) act 6: You are congradulated on your bravery by General Womblesniver! Happy end!
