All About Jharper

All good things must come to an end...but they can start again

As with alot of things in life, all good things must come to an end. Let it be love, videogames, or what have you... at some point they will end. With Rich Gallup leaving Gamespot, this too signals an end to an era around Gamespot, and opens up new doors for not only the GS crew, but the members at GS as well. Will these new doors help bring Gamespot back to it's peek, or will they be crushed under their own power?

Gamespot really started to come into its own a few years back, after they decided to implement the memberships, profiles and all the community items that most have come to love and use daily. On the Spot was something that I personally never saw before on the net, even though live internet shows were around back then. On the Spot was done at such a level of quality and goofyness at the same time, it just blew away the competition. The Hotspot started up about 100 shows back, and again while it was not the first to do it, it still outshines other podcasts. Take that along with the high quality reviews that one can actually trust, the live events, the special events, and it looked like Gamespot was on a roll.

"What goes up... must come down"

It was when Bob Colayco left Gamespot, when things started to change around the entire site. Carrie Gouskos and then Big Daddy Greg Kasavin hit the old dusty trail (or was it Greg then Carrie, they seemed to leave almost around the same time). Last up on the block was Rich Gallup. So many senior people leaving was hard for alot of users around the site to deal with. Rich leaving was a huge blow to the moral to a good portion of the users since his face was the face of Gamespot. Button Mashing, On the Spot, The HotSpot, any live Gamespot event... it was Rich's face. No one around here will forget "We're live and on the spooooooooooooooot." Bob, Carrie, Greg, and Rich really brought life into the site, and now since they have all left, it has some of the users around Gamespot wondering what is going to happen to the site overall. It's really apparent in the comments section of the HotSpot and On The Spot...

"I know this isn't Rich's show but BRING HIM BACK!"

"This looks like a boring episode... "

"WTF this show is going down the toilet"

With the comments listed, you have to take them with a grain of salt considering this is the internet and people will say something negative/stupid about anything. (Example: We have found a cure for cancer. Person on the internet: W3LL THAT SUX0RZ... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL) Afteryou search through the comments that mean nothing, you are left with the comments of people who actually care and wonder what will happen to the site.

"I never think of the future - it comes soon enough." - Albert Einstein

My advice to anyone who is pondering what will happen to Gamespot is to just look and see what is there. There is still great coverage on games such as the recent Madden launch, and the Bioshock launch page. The ability to earn MarketPlace Points for joining in on surveys. The HotSpot, On the Spot, Button Mashing, and the rest. Jeff, Ryan, Alex, Aaron, Homer, Brian, Ryan M... they're all still here. The reviews are here. The community is here. Gamespot is not going anywhere, and just because a few shows change and the hosts change on them, does not signal the end to the sight. Bob, Carrie, Greg, and Rich... we still miss all of you... but we can't stay in the past, we must push onward and be at the top once more.
