Many of you know, I've recently began playing the fantastic Bioware RPG Dragon Age: Origins. It is a very good game, and it's taken even further steps than previous RPG's in creating a complex, flexible, and morally tumultuos world. For instance, right now, my character, who is on the surface a very heroic Elven Mage whom most view to be a very good, upstanding citizen, has saved hundreds of lives and is a pivotal role in fighting the evil forces who are invading the land. At the same time, he has a sick fascination with a forbidden magic, and has sacrificed part of his soul, and decieved most of his companions behind the scenes to learn these powerful, evil spells (blood magic). The game is hard to put down.
But RPG's are also very plodding and slow paced. Even the best RPG's are this way to some extent and DA is no exception. It's almost pointless to pay a game like this for less than a few hours at a time. Andsometimes I feel the need to branch off and take a break from the game.
Well, I did this recently, and went back to playing Modern Warfare 2. Then I realized... I have lost most of my edge and skill in the game in the last week or so I have been playing Dragon Age! Also, I would need to start playing MW2 for at least afew hours a day to get back to competeitive status in the game, having Prestiged and fighting against some really hardcore players. If I did this, I would lose track of the intricacies of the story in Dragon Age, making the game far less appealing, and it would take me hours to get back into the flow of the game. I am also dying to start Assassin's Creed II, which seems like it's going to suck me in and not let me go as well. God knows if I open that I can say goodbye to finishing Dragon Age anytime in the next year!
Too many times to count, I've left a great game to play another, only to never finish either because I keep going back and forth. What's wrong with me? This may seem like a funny problem, but it's something that's bothered me for years, and probably the reason I haven't finished almost half the games in my collection.
So I guess I will just have to stop complaining about get cracking on DA... although sometimes I feel like I'm forced to.

It's that time of year again. The holiday rush of games is well underway, with the hypeathon that is MW2 here, possibly overshadowing other fantastic titles such as Ratchet And Clank Future and Dragon Age: Origins in the midst of the rush to get all the higher profile games that have advertising budgets 10x bigger than their competitors.
Which brings me to an aforementioned title.

I am terrible with RPG's. Not that I dislike them. I can count on one hand the number of RPG's that I have finished in the last 5 years. I enjoy them, it's just that I get distracted or boredbefore I finish.Mass Effect was an exception -- and thus one of my favorite titles of this generation. It was my first Bioware game, and I was fascinated by the branching dialogue trees and choices your character makes that affect the gameplay and story in signifigant ways. And it sucked me in like few games ever have. I finished it without glancing at another game. So I picked up Dragon Age, hoping once again Bioware would work it's magic.
I'm really early in the game (8 hours) but I'm definitely surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. Everything that made Mass Effect so appealing to me is here, but on a much larger scale, complete with therich lore and backstorythat makes other Bioware epics so engrossing. Dragon Age has very interesting and believable characters. I cannot stress how important this is and how few games truly nail it. And kick*** voice acting? Dragonage has it in spades.PLEASE developers... take note here. This is how it's done. The story and writing are also very sharp, and it's obvious Bioware invested alot of time and care in creating this world with painstaking detail. There are also shocking twists and turns (I won't spoil it) that you don't expect from RPG's. Some real gritty, mature stuff that will leave you reeling.
In short: IT ROCKS.
I'm glad I found this game. I also PRESTIGED in MW2 and am slowly losing interest in the game at this point. Prestige is disappointing. I can't believe I spent 80+ hours on the multiplayer only to be a level 1 scrub with a pretty emblem. If someone understands why this is appealing, explain it to me. Please.
I also picked up Assassin's Creed II but haven't opened it yet because Dragon Age has been so good. So I've got some good gaming times coming up, for sure.
Anyway, good to hear from you crazy *******'s and be back into some good games.

Hi everybody! I feel like my last blog was too negative, so I'm here to restore balance to the universe with a happy blog! This one's for you, Dan!
Anyway, on the gaming side of things, I'm finally close to Prestige in MW2. This is fantastic! However, since this is my first online shooter that I've been hardcore into, I am wondering what happens from here. Do I just start over? Do I continue in an endless loop of Prestiges until my *** gets sore from sitting on the couch so much?

Or do I relegate myself to single-player games and a life of gaming solitude like my good friend Johnsteed7? Either way, it's been a fun ride with MW2. I'd could write a review of the game, but I won't. Maybe I could hang out with my new friend more.

I'm also trying to decide what game I am going to get next. There are so many good games out right now, I can't even begin to decide. I am definitely thinking Assassin's Creed II, I have heard nothing but good things about this game! Except of course, MsCortana, who thinks it's "beautiful but just OK"! Good to know!

Happy Holidays everyone!

For the second time in a year, my $400 Elite 360 has given me the Red Ring Of Death. For those unfamiliar, this is the "general hardware failure" that roughly %54 of Xbox 360's experience within ONE YEAR after being bought, rendering your system completely useless.
Well, I've beaten the plague once again. I purchased a $60 warranty from Best Buy with my last system (because I had a feeling this would happen) so I took my 360 to Best Buy, got a brand new Xbox 360 Elite, another warranty, 6 free games (because of Black Friday special), and $180 store credit.
**** yourself, Miscrosoft.

Like millions of others, and practically every person on my friends list, I have been playing quite a bit of MW2 lately. To be more specific, the insanely addictive multiplayer portion of the game. I got to about level 30 in Modern Warfare before I got distracted by other games for a few months... and coming back isn't very fun after a break because you get your *** handed to you for about a week before you relearn the maps and whatnot.
Anyway, I believe I made level 56 last night in MW2. Everything about the multiplayer is better than the first. More balance, better maps, better perks, more variety in almost every facet of the experience. This time I've made a promise to myself to not get distracted, and at least get a Prestige out of the damn thing before I inevitably move on to something else.
Problem is... I have only been playing one game-mode. Free-For-All. This is the mode in the game where you just kill everything that moves. This mode only involves 6 maps, out of the games' 12 or more. And it is completely unsocial. You can hear other players' comments, but there's no cooperation and no teamwork -- usually just alot of trash talking, and whining (which can be hilarious) when someone gets on a gnarly death streak. I choose to play without my headset so I don't get distracted by such BS, but now I'm at a crossroads. I am extremely tired of the 6 maps in Free-For-All.
And moving onto the other modes moves me into N00B territory again at level 56, since I have NO KNOWLEDGE of the other maps. I typically go into an ossasional team deathmatch game with a 5-1 Death-To-Kill Ratio.
FYI for people not familiar with online shooters, this is atrocious! It is very difficult to take the time to differentiate between teammates and enemies with my "kill everything!" style of play.Anyway, I've promised myself to play more Team Deathmatch, and hopefully this will freshen up my experiences with the game. Sorry to all those on my friendslists I haven't played with much, that should change, I've been very singular in my approach to the game and modes thus far.
What do you guys think of the game?

For those of you who are oblivious (my avatar, my signature, my banner), I am a huge fan of the God Of War series. I've beaten and played every game in the series exhaustively. I even bought a PSP just to play Chains Of Olympus, then sold it (because the PSP isn't appealing to me otherwise) just so I could play the game.

One of the cooler moments of an otherwise "meh" demo. And yeah... this guy's head comes right off. Sweet.
Anyway, I believe a demo is in national release as of now on the District 9 DVD, or perhaps not, but I was lucky enough to get my hands on the demo early.
To be expected, it's basically God Of War. The graphics are a step above the PS2 iterations, but aren't mind-blowing in my opinion. The gameplay isvery familiar with a couple cool new moves; a grapple move where Kratos can use enemies as a battering ram being the coolest I've experienced. The grapple animation is different now depending on your directional button presses during the move. Press toward and repeatedely tapping "O" and Kratos will, depending on the enemy, punch him repeatedly in the face before tearing his arm off and beating him with it. And there was a few times when Itore the enemy completely in half. Cool.
The version I played felt unpolished. It's an early build of the game, one in fact that was put together almost 5 months before the game's release... I'm sure these issues will correct themselves but the jumping felt unnatural and impresice, and although it may be changed in the final version, the roll move could not be done in mid-attack! This could present major gameplay issues down the road. WTF?
I seriously hope they change this. And FINALLY.... the end of the demo is a new gameplay segment called an "Icarus Vent" where Kratos sprouts his wings and shoots, Starfox-styIe down a corridor filled with obstacles. You have to manuever Kratos around building beams, falling boulders, etc in order to get to the end of the section alive. These segments feel out of place and very haphazard. Kratos should always be kicking ***.... not engaging in some flight practice where no enemies are involved.
Anyway.... I still had fun with the demo, and hope that some of these issues are resolved when the game ships in March 2010. I'm also definitely wondering if the demo I played will be the demo released to the public on the District 9 DVD, or if it will be a different section altogether.
If anyone knows, give me a shout!

Out of nowhere, my Playstation 3 has become my newfound favorite console. It's taken awhile, but I really think Sony is turning the corner on getting back to being a serious contender. Infamous, Ratchet, and the amazing Uncharted 2 have been in constant rotation in my PS3 for months. I still love my Xbox 360, and I am not a fanboy ny any means. But with a big price cut, much-more reliable hardware, and free (and improving) online, I am really looking forward to the future of the console.
The only real exclusive on the horizon I can think of for the 360 is Mass Effect 2... which I am sure will be great, but Sony's also got God Of War 3 a few months later. Could Sony pull ahead and once again become the industry leader? It will be interesting to see. And with my PS3, the future is looking bright.
Congrats, Sony... I don't think anyone believed you could do it.

"Ever think you messed with the wrong guy? Well, I'm that guy."
So here we go. Being broke (!) and looking through my back-catalog of games I realized all the games I hadn't beaten were RPG's. Most of which I hadn't played in months (shutup, Johnsteed). It's really hard to go back into a story driven game when you've completely forgotten all the characters, plotlines, and god-knows what else. Amonsgt all of this, I had forgotten about one little game. Silly me. InFAMOUS is a fantastic open-world action game that is reminscent of Crackdown, GTA, and a little bit of Mercenaries thrown in. But the game has a great identitly all it's own. And it's a game where the choices you make drastically affect the storyline, world, and even your main character's appearance. And who the hell wants to be a nice guy, given the choice? My version of the hero is a wise-cracking, impatient, sadistic bastard. I steal innocent people's lives to power myself up, blow up police stations for little reason, and generally do whatever the heck I want.
I think the reason I like InFAMOUS so much is that most open-world games give too much freedom for my tastes. GTA, to me, had too many distractions and I usually get bored or sick of the main story by the time I feel like going back to it. For instance, I loved Crackdown because it was structured, but not too linear. Therein lies a similarity to InFAMOUS. You can do what you want, but there's no time-wasters like bowling, dating, or driving around aimlessly. Your character is singular in his purpose, and it's ultimately up to you how he goes about accomplishing it.
Anyway, this game is just a blast to play. The combat is great fun, the voice acting is superb and helps to compliment a very well-told story. And the main character is a brooding bad***.
Score one for an awesome PS3 exclusive.

Sooo.... trying to get back in the gaming groove lately. Bought Batman: AA, played it, loved it. I am also realizing the game has more replay than I thought; not just that it's just a blast to playthrough the story mode again, which it certainly is, but also the challenges. They force you to use every gadget and strategy available in the game, making you realize this game was created with alot of thought, and continues to impress me.
Anyway, having finished with Batman, I started looking at the Arcade on XBL. Everyone was raving about Shadow Complex. I read that it was a 2-D adventure in the spirit of Super Metroid/Castlevania: SOTN, and since those are two of my favorite games and I've loved the DS iterations of Castlevania (which are basically clones of SOTN), I figured it would be a sure thing. The game had a damn Metacritic score of damn near 90, there had to be something special about it.
Well, I'm disappointed to say that Shadow Complex is the type of game I played, and although I liked a bit, I kept waiting for some big surprise or something to happen that would really impress me. What it really is, in all reality, is a sub-par, but serviceable Metroid clone.
There was supposed to be a few pictures here, but Gamespot is being a pain in the *** right now. Try to update later.
The similarities to Metroid are that Shadow Complex features areas that cannot be accessed until certain weapons and gadgets are obtained, there is a grapple shot, and there are missiles. The map system is also identical. But Shadow Complex lacks the depth, variety, and compelling gameplay of even the better Metroid clones (like SOTN). There are basically 4 weapons. The character and plot are plain. And the gameis short. I took my time and messed around finding off-the-beaten path items and still finished the game in under 6 hours.
The game isn't bad, don't get me wrong. But it's not on the level with even the better Metroid clones.. Have fun and get it if you have some exrta MS points to spend and don't mind a short experience, but don't expect to be blown away by the second coming of a cIassic.

Last night I had the unfortunate experience of finishing Batman: Arkham Asylun, Not because the game disappointed, although I did find the last part of the game to be a bit repetitive, but because I knew it would be the only game I'd be into for quite awhile. I'm definitely in a gaming lull right now. Not too much holds my interest, and if it does, it's only temporarily.
But back to the game. The beginning was amazing, and the atmopshere all-in-all is up there with this generation's best. But I did find the last half of the game to drag just a little. It felt at times like I was going through the same series of events -- investigate, track down a boss, beat some goons along the way, beat the boss, repeat. But I was still pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail, the loyalty to the source material, and the obvious labor or love that the game was.Who would think that a studio with no (really) good games under it's belt could produce such a critically acclaimed piece of work? I definitely give Rocksteady kudos for toppling most peoples' expectations.
The combat was my favorite part of the game. With every one of Batman's moves motion-captured by real, expert martial artists, it definitely added to the impact of every acrobatic strike. The engine itself is well-thought out and suited for fighting multiple enemies. This, to me, is one of the games' biggest innovations. It is one of those great engines that is easy to pick up and enjoy, but also takes real skill to master.
The boss battles disappointed me a little. The majority of them came down to beating up henchmen that the boss would send at you, then striking the boss in between with a simple button press. Another thing that bothered me was that the henchmen boiled down to 2 types, basically. The ordinary guy, whether he was armed with a gun, a stun baton, or knives, and a Titan henchman dressed in different outfits that all required the same tactics to beat. It was always fun, however, and only got tedious, to me, near the end. Also, alot of the bosses in the game felt like they were squeezed in as fan-service, and not real battles persay. I suppose when you want to satisfy fans of a comic series with a broad legacy, a little bit of everything is as good as a few highly intense, complex encounters.
I guess I'm focusing on the negatives because truly, the rest of Batman is great. The exploration, action, visuals and sound, pacing, and atmosphere are up there with the best this generation has to offer. I may write a review a bit later, after I beat the game on Hard and solve all the riddles. If that dedication to the game isn't a tribute to it's quality, I don't know what is.

I'm just assuming there's been lots of Batman: Arkham Asylum blogs around lately, because quite frankly, I've been terrible about keeping up on news/blogs/etc. here.
Good news is, I suppose, the demo for this game is giving me reason to fire up the 'ole clunker PC and post a blog here.
I'm definitely impressed by the polished and rewarding nature of the combat, the multitude of ways in which you can attack your objectives, and the trueness to the source material. GEEK FACT: Did you know the script to this game was written by an Emmy-Award winning writer? This definitely sounds promising since nowadays most game stories are sometimes written by programmers and artists. Anyway, where the hell did this game come from? Eidos could've easily thrown together a decent beat-em-up and moved some units, but every part of this game pretty much oozes quality (at least from what I've seen),
So, guys/gals... am I the only one who's been playing this demo to death? Or did you try it once, and put it down?
If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go and let me know what you think!

Me? Red Faction: Guerilla. Completely great game. I'm about 3/4 done with the campaign and already more than satisfied. And I haven't even tried multiplayer, which is supposed to be great as well.
Things go BOOM real purty in this open-world gem.
And you?

Could you deliver this letter to my friends on Gamespot? Tell them that, despite many broken promises of coming back and writing ,coming back and hanging out, coming back and talking about games, that this time, since I've been layed off work, I'll actually have the time to contribute to the community again?
Thanks, and send them all my best!

Hey everbody! I haven't been around, and I know you all miss me dearly. Thank you for the letters of concern! Just kidding, no one sent any letters, and I doubt anyone even noticed!
Ha!
I have been very busy socially lately, I met a girl who's been blowing my mind. And between her, work, and partying, I've had no chance to play anything. 'Cept Peggle, with her. She seems cool, she's very much like me in alot of ways, it's a bit scary. And good news, she's one of the most honest women I've ever met -- so far, that is.
I guess the coolest thing I've done lately that some of you may be interested in is the movie Star Trek. Are you a closet Trekkie? Well, neither am I. I honestly don't care about the series whatsoever. BUT....
The movie is brilliant. Awesome. See it immediately. One of the most exciting movies I've seen in years.
Trust me.
Anyway, just thought I'd drop in and say Hi. Hopefully I'll be around more and get around to catching up with all of you.

Wow, I've had a busy week. Sometimes time off work can be a good thing (and it was), but it can also get you into trouble (which it did). Not bad trouble, but alot of partying and days melding into together. All in all, a great time. But today, I cleaned up my house, organized my games, and promised myself a quiet night at home to myself. So I played a little Ninja Gaiden II (I'm going to a few more achievements), and downloaded Peggle. Anyone played this game? It's really fun! Just a simple puzzle game anyone can play, with some really addictive hooks added into it. Really, try it. You might be surprised.
Oh yeah, I also ended up meeting a girl that I spend 3 days straight with. Whoa. That one came out of nowhere!
Anyway, it's good to be back in my normal routine. And I promise, no more drunk blogs!
Alright.... I don't know if that's a promise I can keep. 0_o

Since my knee gave out on me, I have a weekend off for the first time in years. Literally. I won't be running around on the beach, however, despite the beautiful weather, I'll probably be playing games and watching movies.
THE BAD
I recently finished Ninja Gaiden II after owning the game for over a year. I can't really say whether I liked the game or not. Honestly, it was an equal mix of exhileration, and controller-chucking frustration. And since when did that a good game make? The swordplay was entertaining, but the bossfights weren't fun (cheap, cheap, and cheaper) and the game had some real technical issues (clipping, slowdown, etc). Overall, a 6.5. Unless you have the patience of a saint, skip it.
I also recently picked up Lego Indiana Jones for a real discount price, and promptly returned it for store credit. While not bad, it is a kids game, simple as that.
I also got Lost Planet for $9.99. This game is craptastic. Not only is it highly boring, the achievements are geared toward forcing you to play the god-awful online modes, of which there ARE NO SERVERS FOR anymore. Want to know the only achivement you get for beating the single-player? 5G. Yes, 5G out of 1000G. Skip this worthless peice of **** at all costs.
THE GOOD
Finally, a diamond in the rough! Banjo Kazooie: Nuts And Bolts is awesome! This game was made with alot of love, and attention to detail. The dialogue is very funny, the graphics are bright, colorful, and veryappealing. If you're a fan of BK, get this. The only difference I see is the emphasis on vehicle-based gameplay, and the ability to build your own vehicles (which is funner than it sounds). But it still plays very well. For $20, I definitely recommend it.
Anyway, that's it for my gaming update. What have you all been playing lately?

Sorry for the downer-blogs lately, life is throwing me some weird stuff.
Ready for some more?
This Tuesday, I was having lunch with some friends at a bar/restaurant where my friend works. I had just sat down, ordered a drink, and went to the bathroom. On my way out of the bathroom, I felt my body give out from under me. When I tried to get up, I had incredible pain in my right knee. I went to the doctor, and after some mild tests, they told me I have a....
torn RIGHT MCL! YAY! Anyone who knows knee injuries can tell you this is a painful troubleson injury that takes alot of time to heal. I am in so much pain, I can't even make it to the refrigerator.
I can't drive, I can't do anything. On the bright side, I've been having some incredible support from friends in the past few days.
Anyway, I guess it's a good time to catch up on some games. I've still got Banjo, Lost planet, and RE4 (to replay).
Talk to you all soon.

DISCLAIMER: This is an intensley personal blog. If you're not my friend, move on now!
Here we go again. Yeah, women are trouble. But so what? They are essential. There's a girl I work with that is really cute, is a personal trainer, and is 23. Totally my type. So she showed interest, and I asked her out. She gladly accepted. Great! We went out, and had a great time. At the end of the night, I went to kiss her, and she gave me the "cheek". Yeesh. I haven't misread a woman to this degree in years. Probably 10 years ago was the last time I got "the cheek" going for a kiss. But I've realized, getting older, that sometimes patience is nessecary in dealing with women. And to be honest, I'm ready for a god damn girlfriend. I haven't had one in years, and my days of crazy rendevous with strange women are getting old. I know, it sounds very lame, but it's true.
I want something more.
It takes a bit of maturity to admit this, but it's true. I want a cool girl to kick it with. Is that so much to ask? This girl, Amie, is definitely my type of woman. Lifelong athlete (like me), doesn't drink much, super-cute, but likes to party occasionally. Anyway, tonight, she stayed at my bar after she got off work and hung out right in front of my register. Signs of interest, of course. We talked, joked, and I introduced her to a few of my close friends who came in. They know of my interest in her, and treated her really well. They talked to her throughout the night, bought her drinks, etc. The kind of things real friends do when they know you like a girl. Afterward, we went out, as a group, to eat after work. She stayed because she wanted to hang out with me. At least, it seemed.
At the diner, I sat next to her, we laughed, joked, and were in our own world together. But when I put my hands on her, she never reciprocated. She just sat still. "Whatever", I thought to myself, "maybe she wants to take it slow". So afterward, we go to her place to hang out. We laugh, talk, and have a good time. At the end of the night, I go to kiss her goodnight, and she gives me the cheek AGAIN, saying "Don't do that!" as I go to kiss her. I've never put up with this **** in my life. If a girl isn't naked with me by the second date, normally I am OUT of there. But part of me wants to think she is a really good girl who wants to make me work for it. And human nature is to WANT things you have to work for.
But the reality of the situation appears to be this, as hard as it is to swallow -- she is indeed not interested in me the way I am in her. So I sent her a text telling her we wouldn't be talking again outside of work afterward. It is the only self-respectful thing to do at this point. Really.
After all, isn't it normal to show interest when you're interested? Nothing in this universe makes more sense.
God I'm ******* miserable.
