My Friends

2Jul 09
Flags of USA & Canada crossed

Hi, everybody. Hope you are having a great summer/winter (depending on where you live). Happy Canada Day (yesterday) to my friends from the north. In the USA we will be celebrating our independence this weekend. Of course that means cook-outs and fireworks. How do you celebrate? Today's quote is from a show that aired in the 1980s. Hint: This line is from a flashback scene. Who said:

"Oh, Mommy! My President is being impeached! How could you expect me to continue living the life of a normal second grader?"

? If you have a guess you can send it to me in a PM or give it in your comment below. Thanks for leaving a comment. Congratulations to Hoeech, and madison1314, who knew that Special Agent Timothy McGee of NCIS said to Abby: "Why are you showing me mold porn?" Let me know if I missed anybody.

Old Business: In my June 24 blog I showed you a picture of some TV dads. Congrats to all who could recognize any or all of them. Here's the picture again along with Hoeech's list, since he got them all right. Remember, the men on the ends are the 2 event organizers.

TV Dads

Back row: Bill Paxton - Big Love, Jon Cryer - Two and a Half Men, Patrick Duffy - Step by Step (he wasn't a dad in "Dallas" or "Man from Atlantis"), Stephen Collins - 7th Heaven, Reggie Vel Johnson - Family Matters
Frong row: Dick Van Patten - Eight is Enough (unless you're Octomom), Dick Van Dyke - Diagnosis Murder (in which his ACTUAL son played the role of his television son....you thought I'd go with "Dick Van Dyke Show", didn't you?), Michael Gross - Family Ties

What's Up?: The Sears Tower Ledge opens today. They have built a glass-enclosed deck that juts out of the 103rd floor. Not for the faint of heart.

Another Celebrity Gone: Actor Karl Malden passed away Wednesday at the age of 97. He was a successful character actor in films such as On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire before coming to TV as Lt. Mike Stone in The Streets of San Francisco, one of my favorite shows. He may be best remembered for his 20-year stint as spokesman for American Express. "Don't leave home without it."

Mini-Musical: A web site called CollegeHumor.com doesn't sound like something I'd normally like, but I recently found an original musical they made called Web Site Story. Since I love the music from West Side Story, and I'm hip to Facebook , I really enjoyed it. See what you think.

Have a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by! Exclamation point!

Belated happy Canada day to all the Canadian peeps! And Happy 4th of July to everyone from the US! McGee!! Of course. I knew I heard it just recently! I only know Bill Paxton and Stephen Collins (who looks much older from how I remember him). That ledge is scary! I'm getting woozy just staring at it. Definitely not for me. Another one? RIP, Karl Malden.

I always liked A Streetcar Named Desire and I thought Karl did a splendid job in it. I'd like to walk on something a little less...transparent. Happy early 4th of July!

I'll always remember Carl Malden as General Omar Bradley from "Patton" -- one of my favorite movies of all time. This has been a really horrible week for the entertainment world.

As for the celebrity dads -- I thought TV.com rules frowned upon the cutting and pasting of someone else's work (a-HEM). You even used my snarky remarks and my typo on the "Frong row".

Have a great Fourth of July!

Hello again. This is another tough quote, so I'll wait for the next one. I would try that Sears Tower ledge, if I'm ever there, but I know some people wouldn't trust it. Interesting though. For the 4th, we're going to minor league baseball game, with fireworks, and maybe watch Independence Day!

Hi IndianaMom, Had a Great Canada Day! Thanks, my family came up for a visit, the weather said thundershowers but we had sunshine and a lovely BBQ. I can't believe I missed that NCIS quote, it's very funny! I missed Bill Paxton! I didn't recognize him. Doh!! 97 years old, WOW~ I loved him on The Streets of San Francisco and he was great in the short-lived series SKAG. His last film Nuts I hated him in that because he played the abusive father and I always wanted him to be good guys only.

Found a great heart-flag for Canada Day yesterday so I posted a mini-blog just for it ... I worked, that's what I did for it, we can change that day so I had Monday off instead. Hope you have a great 4th of July! Ummm, I didn't Karl know wasn't dead, I had assume... I really like him though.

Mack: I love your Memmys avatar. Very creative. I thought more people would know Jon Cryer, since 2.5 Men is a popular show. I'm with you about the ledge.

Woolsey: He was a great character actor. Very believable. Hope you have a great weekend.

Hoeech: I've never seen Patton. It doesn't sound like my kind of movie. I agree that it's been a bad couple of weeks. You say, I thought TV.com rules frowned upon the cutting and pasting of someone else's work. So, it's not a rule, just a facial expression. I guess I'm fine with that. Congratulations on winning the "Find IM's Typo" game. You'll get your prize later. Believe me, you'll get it. Happy belated Canada Day.

mtjaws: They say the glass on the ledge is 1.5" thick, which should be reassuring, but I'll still pass. A ball game sounds great. We did that a few years ago. They had the city's firworks in a place you could see them from the ball park.

April: I'm glad you had a good holiday. For the 4th we'll be going to a big deal on the campus of one of the colleges here. I think I mentioned that my son has entered a Guitar Hero tournament to take place on that day, which will be on the college campus. Some of the TV dads in that pic don't really look their best. Paxton is one of them. I guess Karl Malden often played the bad guy in the movies, but in interviews he always seemed like a big teddy bear.

Phin: That's nice, that you can choose which day you'll have off. I've got Friday off, since the holiday is on Saturday. Karl Malden retired a long time ago. I read in an interview that he wasn't interested in working at all after he retired. I don't blame him. Thanks to his American Express commercials he was financially set for life.

They should show some Streets of San Francisco on TV Land. I really liked that show. I'll check out Web Site Story later. I'm at work too!

Karl Malden is the second celebrity from Gary, Indiana, the place of my birth, to die within a week. The first, of course, was Michael Jackson. I probably at one time lived within a few blocks or so of him (MJ) and his family without knowing it.
