Year End Look Back/Review

Ok guys its time for my annual year end look back and review of all the stuff Ive played. Last year I limited it to just new games, but this year Im gonna round up everything I got to play. Ill try keep each one somewhat short so as not to bog you guys down with too much at once, and gamespot cant handle too much text in blogs anyway so id probably run out of room. The last part will be my game of the year for 2010, only games that came out this year and ones that ive played are eligible.

So here we go!

No More Heroes

nmh

Ah heres a little gem of a game that I missed out on the first time. With great characters and a weird charm ive only seen from the likes of metal gear, No more heroes is a great game. It has pretty solid gameplay throughout, but the stages may be a bit bland and repetitive but for the most part it was fun the whole way through. Travis is a great character that is completely unique compared to most out there now. One of the aspects that stuck out the most was probably using the wiimote like a cell phone to hear about upcoming missions. I can only hope i pick up NMH2 sometime soon.

Final Score: 8.0

Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

tvc

More than likely the best fighter for wii easily, this game surprised me a bit, but also left me wishing it had been a bit more. Fast and furious combat is the standard for the vs series and TvsC holds true, and im amazed by how deep the game still is considering how many buttons they had to work with. Good game overall, I had wished the roster was a bit better but It seems they were saving the best for Marvel Vs Capcom 3.

Final Score: 8.0

3D Dot Game Heroes

3d

This has got to be one of my favorite games of the year, I never thought any game this year could make me this nostalgic. A great throwback that had me mesmerized from the moment I put it in, I must have spent hours just creating my characters as many of you had seen in one of my previous blogs. Music was also an outstanding aspect with midi tunes that sent me right back to 1987. The gameplay was old school zelda right down to the hookshot and items, but that's what i loved about it most and it will definitely hold me over till Skyward Sword comes out. It added its own touch the the formula with a giant screen filling blade, magic and other things. Its definitely one to check out if your a fan of old games, or fondly remember games of that era.

Final Score: 8.5

Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo

db

This is a game I got for a discount price so I wasn't expecting much, and I pretty much got just that. It has its charm being dragonball and some excellent character models and art design, but as far as gameplay goes it falls flat. Its just a straight beat em up game with a few decent boss fights but many glaring flaws. I normally love beat em up games but this one just offered no variety and felt really stale.

Final Score: 6.5

Super Mario Galaxy 2

smg

What can I say that hasnt already been said about this game? It is indeed a really great game that improved upon the original In almost every way. But I still find that I enjoyed the first game more, It just felt so much fresher, and I know im the minority when I say this but the streamlined gameplay feels a little hallow. I think I miss the little narrative and cutscenes the original game had since it made the presentation that much better, and having bigger levels to explore has always been something I enjoyed more. These minor gripes shouldnt take away from the experience though, they are what held it back for me but I doubt It will hamper anyone elses enjoyment of it. Excellent platforming is what put mario on the map and here hes at his best, considering that the gameplay is pretty much unchanged they manage to get alot of milage out of it which is great.

Final Score: 9.0

Resident Evil 5: Lost In Nightmares/Desperate Escape

re5

I dont normally buy DLC content but since capcom had a sale I had to pick it up for $5. For the most part gameplay is exactly the same, I didnt expect it to drastically change but some new weapons would have been nice. Lost in nightmares had great atmosphere and going through the spencer mansion again was like reliving the RE games of past. Desperate escape was pretty much just an escape mission that was a bit frustrating but still fast paced and good. For the price it was pretty good, still same old RE5 but a revisit is good every once in a while.

Final Scores: 8.0, 7.5

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

bis

I'm just gonna say best mario RPG ever, yea I went there. I had had this game for a while in my closet but I didnt get around to play it till this last year, man was I missing out. Playing as bowser (one of my favorite characters) and having him rampage and travel around the mushroom kingdom with his temper usually getting the better of him was a lot of fun. The combat was quite satisfying and there were cleaver uses for activating bowsers inner powers as well, the badges and special moves kept every battle interesting and unique. A solid story and good humor (especially fawful) round out a great package, this is one of my highest rated handheld games ever and I couldnt recommend it more. Oh and "I have chortles"

Final Score: 9.5

Bayonetta

bay

Having missed it the first time earlier this year I finally got a chance to play bayonetta after getting it during black friday. Ive seen that this is a love it or hate it game, I thought it was great since I happen to have an affinity for games that are as over the top as can be which is exactly what makes it awesome. I dont think ive seen combat as fluid as this game in game recently, and playing god of war right after this made it feel down right sluggish compared to bayonetta. All the little in game jokes are great too, this game doesnt take it self seriously since the story is meant to be nonsensical and its design is definitely one all its own, I only wish the next devil may cry was still being made by this team.

Final Score: 8.0

Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

4

For the most part this is a very good game, its not quite the return to glory sega is always proclaiming with each installment, but its definitely a step in the right direction. Solid platforming and excellent presentation help but some of the floaty physics and slippery controls along with stages almost taken straight from sonic 2 hold it back from being truly great.

Final Score: 7.5

Bionic Commando

bc

Well hmm, I can see what they were trying to accomplish with this game but its just so average and repetitive. The swinging mechanics work somewhat well but there are so many missteps and areas that aren't even spots you should be platforming on, and probably the worst offender is the radiation invisible walls, who thought that was a good idea? Anyway some enjoyment can still be found within but not much.

Final Score: 5.5

The Legendary Starfy

ls

A game almost too cutesy for its own good this one was ok, nothing special but not really a must play. Slow platforming is what this game entails and Im surprised its even slower than Kirby. It was alright but nothing really makes it stand out so thats about it.

Final Score: 5.0

Metroid: Other M

mom

I don't care what anyone who's caught up in this games controversy says, I loved this game for everything it was and is. Fast fluid combat is something new to the series but it works well, and even though the game is much more linear I had no problem with it, after years of being lost in metroid games knowing where I was going and making a difference when I got there was much more rewarding in a way. Story was good, not incredible but for nintendos first try at a serious story I commend them for it being as good as it was. Samus and her story have never been slicker and this game was a nice change up, and one I hope gets a sequel sometime soon.

Final Score: 8.5

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

los

This was a game I was very sceptical of at first, being an old fan of castlevania I had learned not to expect much from their 3D entries and giving it to another team seemed to worry me even more. But to my surprise the game turned out great and better than I could have hoped. It has great combat, amazing scenery, and an atmosphere and feeling that totally sucked me into it. It may not be the way I would want the series to go but I cant deny how much I enjoyed the game for everything it accomplished. Its not perfect though, some odd camera angles and weird platforming may cause some frustration but otheriwise the rest is great. And now that we know a sequel is coming Im eagerly awaiting what comes next.

Final Score: 9.0

Super Street Fighter 4

ssf

Im gonna keep this one short, but I will say this that the game is just as awesome and completely outdoes the first one. New specials more characters and many other things make this the SF4 to own, I do miss some of the content they took out like the movie viewer and what not but it easily makes up for it with all of the other added features especially the throwback to old bonus games like car smashing.

Final Score: 9.0

Kirby's Epic Yarn

key

Clearly this game sports a very unique art direction, and its used to its full extent. Playing as kirby in this yarn world was great and there are so many different uses and inventive ways for him to interact with his world. A bit on the very easy side but that shouldn't hamper the good gameplay, I know losing all the jewels I collected was rather annoying but i guess thats where the challenge lies. A good game for sure and one ill continue to enjoy.

Final Score: 7.5

Read Dead Redemption

rdr

I just got this recently so Im still working on it at the moment. But so far its a really good game, such a vast array of things to do is almost mind boggling. Even my dad enjoyed watching me play it since hes big into westerns. Just riding around the mexican country side is a blast and forging my own legend in the game is proving to be well worth some of the hype.

Final Score: 9.0

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

nuns

Easily the best representation of an anime as a game, no question about it. With gorgeous graphics this game brings the story of naruto to life like never before. It has excellent animations and good fighting engine that although works well online, but is still a bit shallow, the story mode was much more streamlined as well which was good too. Such care was taken in creating this game and its world, I only hope that one piece one day gets a game of this caliber.

Final Score: 8.5

God of War 3

gow

One of the titles I had wanted most over the year was always somewhat out of my reach till Christmas, oh but it was worth the wait. Brutally over the top and oh so awesome, this game more than any other really makes you feel as if you a serious force to be reckoned with. Each boss battle in this game was more stunning than the previous one, playing as kratos never seemed better. There are many new weapons in this instalment that work like his default weapon but that's just fine IMO (since its the only weapon I tend to use). A fitting end for the series but based on the ending I don't think we've seen the last of it.

Final Score: 9.0

Donkey Kong Country Returns

dk

My second favorite game this year, DKCR blew me away. I haven't been this pleased with a platformer since I was a kid, it gave me that great feeling of nostalgia while bringing something new to the table as well. Retro has done a fantastic job and I couldn't be happier with the final product. This is tight platforming at its best and Im glad nintendo finally cut out all the rubbish that was polluting the DKC series for sometime, no crocs, no unnecessary side characters just DK, Diddy, Cranky and the island is all I need. This came very close to being my game of the year, and for good reason since Its been years since ive seen a 2D platformer with such variety and lush worlds as this. I'm so happy to see DK return to his former glory, good to have you back old buddy.

Final Score: 9.5

goty

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

pw

Yes this game wowed me that much, It is indeed that good. I have only ever given 1 other handheld game a perfect score but now with this that makes 2. It just offers so much in such a small package, great gameplay, magnificent story, and plenty to do when all is said and done. Managing snakes army was a lot of fun, picking and choosing which soldiers I wanted and building my off shore fortress was great. The games story was quite touching as well, the connection between snake and the boss has always been something I enjoyed and this one only expands upon that even more. Multiplayer was excellent too, my friend and I must have played a ton of it since there were tons of side missions to be played. All this and more are why I chose it as my game of the year, simply amazing kojima you've done it again.

Final Score: 10

And that about does it, hope you guys enjoyed my look back at this year, There were some more games I played but I didnt have enough room to list them here. Here's hoping 2011 is just as good.

Nice run down of the games you played (30, is quite a lot). Nice shout out to Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2!

That's exactly why I'm waiting for a price drop for it, unless I cave in and go ahead and pay $18 for it since I could use more club nintendo points. :P

@riou7: Thanks @soulless4now: Yea, no challenge and no secrets make it a very shallow game unfortunately. @Shy_Guy_Red: Good to hear, and Im definitely passionate about my gaming so expect those kind of answers often :P. @Serbine: Thanks, and yea for me the kremlings were just villains that never appealed to me even after all this time I still dont enjoy them, I know others do like them but for me personally I think DK could use a better main villain. Yea I am hoping that unlimited cruise 2 in america, it would definitely make up for the lack of one piece love america doesnt get. @iTzLegitHexic: god of war 3 was awesome, and I agree the satyrs were rather annoying, and it took me a bit to figure out all you have to do is grab thim to defeat them quickly. Theres some really good wii games, its just you gotta choose them wisely, and thanks Im glad you liked the blog,

I loved God of War 3, I just started playing it again. Stuck on Hell Cerberus + Satyrs, right near the end. SMG2 was the only physical game I have on my Wii, other than Wii Fit. This is because I made myself do jumping jacks and pushups when I died, had a Game Over, or even if I had gotten a Power Star. Other M was quite appealing to me, discarding the fact of it's bombardment of HATE HATE HATE. You changed my mind on Legend of Starfy. XD Anyways, great blog!

@Gohansephiroth: Awesome list of games you play, I gotta get all those Wii games , why no love for K. Kool and the other kongs I want them back , who know there probably is a stellar One Piece game though we ended up not getting it *looking at you Unlimited Cruise 2  *, let's hope the 3DS version get release here or that the 3DS is region free like the DS, also hope the year been great for you :D.

No no, I love long posts, it usually means the writer is more passionate about it which makes it more fun to read. :P

soulless4now

I'll try to. :P Yeah and that sorta makes it boring because there is no challenge plus the stages were so straight forward too, no secret things to find like in Kirby.

List of awesome games.. :D MGS Peacewalker is a great choice for Goty!

Gohansephiroth
Gohansephiroth

@Null7: Yup peacewalker brought the goods, and for me it topped everything else, glad you agree with me :D. Lords of shadow and RDR are definitely worth a look see. @matastig: thanks, and I loved listening to the briefings too, so much to learn and fantastic voice acting made it all the better. The Hidden tapes from paz were pretty good to listen to as well. And thanks again for the kind words :D

@kairikh: Yea you should definitely check out those games. The desert temple in 3D Dot Game heroes was a pain, but im sure you can find a guide to get through that part if its haulted your progress. @bugbag: Im definitely thankful I got to play all these great games, and you should check out PW for sure. @Shy_Guy_Red: Sure anytime, sorry i unloaded that massive post on you, but when i start writing its hard for me to stop :P @Vyse_Legends: NMH2 gets cheaper each time I see it so im more tempted to buy it now than ever. RDR is quite awesome, and i probably will pick up undead nightmare now that you mention it. @soulless4now: dont feel bad souless, youll get to play em sooner or later, stay positive :D. And I agree with you about starfy, it was way too easy, It didnt even seem like anything in that game is trying to delay your progress or hurt you. @nintendoboy16: thanks, and good to hear your enjoying DKCR as well, such an awesome game. @Nightmare-_-: eh pulling off the combos is about the same, and some of the characters have been tweeked but I didnt notice too much of a change.

matastig

MGS Peace Walker deserve the title, i spent hours listening to the Briefing files, i've learned a lot about Che Guevara, the Guerrilla Warfar and the Cold War, but not just that i've learned alot about Nature too......and Birds . this game is one of a kind and you my friend have a great taste in games.

I agree with you. For me, MGS: PW was game of the year. Also, I would like to play Lords of Shadow and RDR. After nearly all media sources gave RDR the Game of the year award, it really makes me wana try it out. Good read btw ;)

I swear I'm getting more and more jealous every time I see a blog that shows how many games people played this year. :P I played a bit of Starfy this year and it was bad. I just think it's too easy for its own good. Even Kirby has his challenging moments.

NMH=One of the Greatest Bizarre Games Ever. The sequel...the first few and last few boss fights are really awesome(expect the last fight because...**** it was annoying!:x) but the ones inbetween are kinda...forgettable I guess.:? And yes Red Dead Redemption is freaking awesome!:D And zombies make it even cooler.:P

Gohansephiroth

@Shy_Guy_Red: Thanks, and other m and BIS were fantastic, we got good tastes :P. Yea I was hoping I could score starfy higher, but it just was pretty avarage or below thats why I gave it the score I did, 5 is average for my scores so its not too bad. I thought PW was that good, I am a diehard MGS fan so that probably has alot to do with it, not sure if its for everyone but its absolutely everything I could have hoped for. And about DK sure Ill elaborate more on what I mean, no problem. When I said it had more variety than any other 2D platformer in recent memory I meant that each level felt completely unique compared to the ones before it. There was always something new to see and it seemed almost like every level offered up a new game mechanic or twist on an existing one. Level theme diversity was pretty lax though if thats what you thought I meant before, yea they could have gone with an ice level or some of the other rather cool looking ones they canned for the final game, but since its a jungle i think it didnt need to cram every element themed level in there, theres always the sequel for that. Im not a fan of ice levels myself any way :P. New super Mario bros wii had some good level design but for the most part level pace and design felt similar the whole way through, DK's levels were so dynamic and ever changing especially the levels that had a transition from one world to another like world 5-1 (and i normally like mario games more so this is out of character for me).

Gohansephiroth
Gohansephiroth

@PHILRYABKIN: It was indeed a great year full of awesome games, when I think about it now this year was much better than last year, for me at least. @Doomguard3: Yea no game is without faults and many of these had them, lost in nightmares was indeed too short. Bayonettas story was not meant to be take seriously, its all about over the top style and its story was nonsensical on purpose. Naruto UNS2's combat is a bit better but its sort of like you said in that its not changed much. Metal Gear has had controls like that since MGS4 and the camera hasnt been overhead since MGS1, it still feels a bit clunky but in that game sneaking is the most desired method, you can run and gun and you have to during boss battles but it doesnt feel as though its turned into a straight up shooter. @Asagea_888: Thanks, and ya I avoided the PS3 version of baynetta and got the 360 version, if I have the choice im definitely gonna try the best experience i can. @macrules_640: Thanks, and out of the ones you picked those would be some of the best. And I agree heres to 2011. @Kid_Black_Star: Hell yea haggar makes the game 10 times better for sure, he was one of my most wanted characters for the game, I knew he was in from the leak last year but just seeing him in action was great. Good to see someone else appreciate peacewalker as much as I did, easily the best handheld and PSP game Ive played.

Shy_Guy_Red

Awesome blog go, fun read, 2010 was a pretty amazing year overall I'd say too. Just awesome. Glad you loved Other M and Bowser's Inside Story like I did. :3 And surprised at the very low score for Stafy. :o Maybe I won't pick it up after all. And shocking at your GOTY, I will have to tell my good friend nintendo_warrio about this! :P Great blog overall, the one thing I was just curious about, was you saying DKCR had such great variety that a platformer hadn't had for a while, maybe just me, but the lack of water levels and no I guess ice theme or sky theme and such levels had me feeling the game was a bit lacking in variety, was just wondering if you could elaborate more if it's not much trouble?

"I had wished the roster was a bit better but It seems they were saving the best for Marvel Vs Capcom 3." THERE PUTTING HAGAR!!!! BEST NEWS I GOT ALL DAYY! Peace walker is the reason why i still play my PSP XD good list, im going to get super street fighter 4 hopefully for the PS3 as well with Naruto, unless of course money issues take a beating at me AGAIN! -_-

2010 was definitely a great year for gaming and even though I only purchased three of those games on your list which included SSF IV, Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, and RDR, they were probably some of the best purchases I made last year and they'll definitely be keeping me busy well into 2011 until I purchase some other games, but overall you've played some great games, keep it up like that for 2011 too! :D

Asagea_888
Asagea_888

Great choices, my friend --- I'm not surprised to see Lords of Shadow on the list. And I've been meaning to try Bayonetta, too, but I hear the PS3 port is buggy and that the 360 version is the best bet.

Doomguard3
Doomguard3

Awesome bunch. I cant wait to play No More Heroes one day. Lost in Nightmares had a great atmosphere and levels, but it was just way too short, if you know what to do you can finish it in 5 minutes. Bayonetta has great combat but I didn't like the story. They start by introducing all these different realms but they don't really matter for the game. I was hoping to see some really great locations but most of them are way too repetitive for their own good, especially the bosses. I have yet to play Naruto 2, but its probably the same as the first one which I have 2 copies of, and the combat is really dissapointing, just spam circle and defend, there are only 2 jutsus to use per fight so it can become very predictive. As for Peace Walker I hate it how they made it as a shooter, the controls are too awkward on a PSP, why not stick to the original top down view ?

PHILRYABKIN

@AK_the_Twilight: Yea peacewalker turned out great, Im still surprised by how much they managed to cram in this one game. Glad you liked the blog and thanks for reading. @nunchuk28: Yea it was a pretty good year, and I didnt even think about the terrible peripherals but like you said they dont matter anyway. Haha yea i guess i did make a mistake when listing bayonetta's score, thanks for correcting me, I actually wrote some parts of this pretty quickly. Guess my testimony ls flawed in this case :P Objection!

nunchuk28
nunchuk28

Haruhi, you played a lot of games that came out this year. I still have to catch up with some games that I missed (mainly refering to Bayonetta, Epic Yarn, GoW3 and MGSPW). 2010 was truly one of the best years videogame ever had (ignoring Sony and Microsoft terrible peripherals). And now I'm gonna make a annoying remark, in this blog you gave Bayonetta a 9, but in your rated games, you gave it a 8! Clearly a contradiction in your statement sir (I seriously must stop thinking like PW D: ).

AK_the_Twilight
AK_the_Twilight

I've yet to play Peace Walker, but your commentary suggests that even amongst a plethora of big-name console titles, Kojima can still deliver solid action on a handheld system, despite limitations of the hardware. Sounds awesome. Seems you've been busy this past year. Awesome commentary. :D
