Do you have the ba!!Z?

Situation : 2014, Sony and Microsoft release the nextgen machines named Playstation Universe and Xbox Life. (ok, just totally made that up) Both systems now block the ability to play used games. Oh, and by the way, Nintendo decided to not even be bothered by releasing a new console, they just released the DS 5D, which also blocks used games.

The question: Seeing as a huge majority of the gaming community has already announced from the top of a mountain that they would "never" buy a new console if that was the case, do you feel you have the ballz to go through with the threat?

I'm not sure I do.

What is the difference between not being able to play used games on a console, and not being able to play used games on a PC, which we have not been able to do for years? I remember in the way back machine a time when I was able to walk into a store like GameStop and look through stacks of used games, not any more.

Just curious.

I'm not sure. Like another user said, it's the principle of the situation.

I do why should we gamers be held at ransom buy game company's, because no doubt the cost of games will go up to on the next gen console. As a guy who works full time and has two kids I enjoy the time I get to play games but most new games that come out I wait until there cheaper at a used price if I buy brand new I trade them in for store credit once I have finished it. I also buy a lot of my DVD's used but the movie business does not moan at me or us film fans for buying n selling used DVD's so why should we have the right to buy and sell used games taken from us?.

These stupid limitations make pirating more and more tempting.

If they're going to block used game sales, the price of a new game should come down. Why? Well the risk involved is lessened for the publisher, and so less risk means that their investment is safer, and requires less return. But, they won't do this because they want it all their own way.

There is actually a large difference: the PC is an open platform while a console like the XBOX and it's online service is not. The lack of used gaming on the PC has been remedied to a degree by it's competitive digital distribution market, while doing away with used games on the XBOX would essentially funnel all game transactions through them alone creating a far different atmosphere for pricing(it would be completely unrealistic to expect them to allow digital sales anywhere outside their own XBL marketplace). For a model like that to gain traction all three console makers really would have to be in on it together by implementing their own version of the policy within a short time frame, but even then a few overzealous companies huddled in one corner of a vast market would not faze the modern consumer that has so many other options vying for their free time and wallets.

It would be tough for me. Gaming has become a bigger part of my leisure time over the last several years than it has been probably in any other point in my life. I think the overall quality of video games this generation is better than it's ever been. This is the first console generation where I've owned every single gaming console because they all have more than enough games to justify my purchase. But as the quality of video games increases, I'm seeing more and more things that drive my crazy on the business side of things. Mostly I've just been complaining about them, but not much else. However, if things get as bad as it looks like they will, I just can't in good conscience support the industry anymore. I know I'll likely miss out on some incredible experiences, but there are plenty of movies, books, etc that I miss out on by playing so many games. There will always be other entertainment options out there.

It doesn't matter if you dont buy used games, it would still be terrible for all of us in many ways.

I would not purchase one, i would use a gaming PC. I made a lot of points on the article about this issue, explaining how this would effect us, there are so many negatives and no positives to it (despite what some people think), i know it would be absolutely disastrous, and there would be no way that i would support it.

I would go through with the threat. I like borrowing friends games its pointless to buy two copies if you can just trade with each other. Also re selling the games are great because if you get stuck with a game you hate you can just resell and recoup some of the money you lost on buying it. Plus I'm kinda getting sick of games. :)

I would boycott any console doing that. I went through a long period without computer games in my life before PS3 arrived, and I would not hesitate to do it again if arrogant producers made it even more ludicrously expensive to enjoy my pastime. I would just stick with what I've got until it was no longer supported and then jack it in. There's only so much control I am willing to submit to.

I would still buy the new consoles, just probably buy less games for them. I think most of the games I play I buy new anyways. I'll wait for a price drop, but I find it very rare that I buy a used game. What will effect me most is that renting won't be an option. I think what most people don't realize, is that if you are a used game buyer then you aren't a customer of any gaming company so they could care less whether or not you bought a console. Even the console makers don't make much (if any) money off of the actual consoles. It sucks for consumers, but the companies that make games have no desire or obligation to support used game sales. I generally think people will complain a lot and then end up getting the system anyways. A lot of people say they wouldn't buy a system that has that feature, but in the end most people don't really have to fortitude to deny themselves of something they enjoy on a principle. I buy most of my games on PC anyways, and there are no used game sales there. It hasn't stopped me from getting the games and I don't think it will stop most people.

This idea doesn't frighten me at all. I haven't bought a used game in a long time. If I don't have the funds to buy a game new the day it comes out, I just wait for a price drop or sale. Just about every game drops in price within a month, and many huge games have crazy sales the week of release--I bought Portal 2 for PS3 brand new from Amazon for $35 a week or so after it came out. Then there's Steam, where nothing is used, but everything is priced like it is. The only downside for me would be if I couldn't have Gamefly, though I'm starting to think that I don't need that particular service anymore.

It really depends. I would have no problem not buying used games but the problem is 1: How do you acquire a rare game (not as much of a problem for current consoles 2: What happens when you lose a console (how hard would it be to recover an account) 3: What happens if your account is banned are 100s of $$$ of games now wasted 4: Years later will you still have access to your games or will they just be gone, and, if so, how will those games ever be playable again If there was absolutely no used games, my assumption would be that games would go a more PC route and that the console would use download services like Steam/GOG/Etc for all the games available on it. Over 90% of my games for current system were bought new/preordered and bought new so if things continue like this it wouldn't have much of an effect on me until problems like the ones I listed come up.

Buying into any console is always down to more than one factor. Ulimately it always comes down to the games. However, given the recent trend of half baked, dumbed down, generic games, with DLC locked content on disc....if they wanna throw this crap into the mix, the games are going to have to be F UCKING AMAZING.

oh, and to answer your question, I would rather keep playing my 360 and PS3 which have more flexibilty, if indeed this is the strategy Sony and Microsoft want to use with their next gen systems....

This is not only about used games, this is also about downloadable games. Sony just announced that they will give a 10% discount on all downloadable games for the Vita (versus retail). 10% are they kiding? @wavey_gravey - I agree 100%. Price will determine everything... my assumption is that the greedy console industry will come out with donwloadable games or retail games that you can't played on a different console... If they choose this strategy but keep the same price on new games ($60 CAD), it will fail miserably. People will wait until the price drops dramatically.. So either way, the industry will lose, the consumers will suffer, etc, etc....

BUT, I just had an idea. What if you really stick it to MS, Sony and Nintendo by purchasing their console used? That'd be kind of hilarious in principle.

@wavey_gravey PC games in the US start at $50 while some bigger releases go to $60. Thing is, PC prices tend to drop a lot faster than console prices. For instance, Dead Space 2 on PS3/360 is still around $30 but the PC version is around $5. Not to mention Steam sales, GoG sales (which is spectacularly DRM-free!!!), etc.

I've got the balls. I predominantly buy brand new games to begin with. I buy all of my PC games as well and yet they still try to straddle me with DRM schemes and now consoles that will block used games sales? Sure, I buy games new, but there are times where my friends and I will swap games with one another, or for older-gen games that I try to locate and play again on Xbox, GC, N64, etc. If they take it away, well, most people won't care, but I've got the balls.
