All About Gauphastus

I may post anything from quick quips to long-winded BS, all regarding games.
Or I may not.
Who cares?

    Silkroad Online

I glanced over at the X-Fire's most played games list. I noticed this Silkroad Online.
So I went and got it.

Why do I keep thinking this garbage from Korea will ever be any good?

Setting up the account was easy. No annoying email validation BS.
I continue on. I download, install, and update the game with no issues. I proceed to log in.
Oh, I have to pick a server. Alright.

    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    Crowded
    etc.

Fantastic. They're all jammed up. But that's okay! That pretty much guarantees that the game is awesome, right?
Nah, not a chance. But I'll get to that in a minute.

I try to log in to one of the crowded servers. It says I can't due to server load.
It then disconnects me from the game server and promptly closes the program entirely.
    What genius designed this?

I try again and somehow manage to slip in. I make my character quickly, as I don't want to waste much more of my time; already, I'm beginning to lose interest in it.

The first thing I see is a huge mass of vendors sitting in the town square. I'm immediately hit with near decade old memories of Ragnarok Online and the framerate loss caused by too much crap on screen at once.
Luckily, I have a better computer now; it's unfortunate that the game has plenty of uneven lag to throw at me instead.

Ignoring it, I push on. I escape the town and all the static morons in it to go try out the combat.
I could hardly manage to get a swing on any one of the dozens of roaming straw man demon whatevers without some heavily armored douchebag coming up and killing it first. In one hit even.

    Last straw. Gone.
And once again, I reaffirm to myself that Korea cannot make a MMORPG worth dick.

Tales of Pirates Online - Open Beta

A friend of mine recommended the game to me, claiming that a few other friends were in there too. So, I went ahead and downloaded it a few days later when I had some spare time.
I didn't quite meet my friends immediately, not that I expected it; I just wanted to get in there and try it out. I wasn't exactly told of the games uniqueness or of any cool features. I was told it was fun, and that was good enough for me.

I was nearly bored to tears in the short time I managed to force myself to play the thing.
Did I mention the game is another one of those Korean MMOGs? If you're well versed in the world of MMOGs, you know that the Korean ones are all lame grindfests.
Even knowing this, I had no predispotion toward the game. I quickly went in expecting to see something different; unfortunately, I learned that these things are more of the same than ever.

No flash, no substance, no interest.
    No thanks.

Bought Crackdown, The Red Star, and God of War (used)

Went to two different stores. I wasn't about to pay $68.whatever for Crackdown, no matter how much I wanted to play it.
Crackdown is alright, but the fun simply does not last long enough. Before long, your character is incidentally maxed out from killing gang members and collecting the ability orbs; this ends up leaving me with little incentive to replay, as I'm not a fan of increased difficulty modes.
Cleaning the streets was mostly a cinch. It seemed so quick, I sat there and asked myself, "Now what?"
Now nothing. It's done. That was it.
And thank freaking God I didn't pay full price.

I haven't had a chance to try out God of War yet. All I've heard, mainly from Gaming Steve, is that the game is a bit short, and there are sex minigames.
    Huh.

The Red Star is a kind of old-school, beat-em-up x shooter. Or so it was described.
I find it very boring and lame.
Following a linear path, shooting and slashing through as many as four pathetic baddies at one time, occasionally fighting a mini-boss or stage boss with two moves, I find myself wondering why in the hell this game would possibly merit anywhere near decent review scores.
Because it's old-school? Fie. You can shove it, sir.
