    About this EA/ESPN/NFL deal

After reading about this whole EA/ESPN thing, I can't help but have to make some comments about it. I think it's one of the biggest shows of no-faith by a company that's supposed to be promoting a brand. I mean, aligning yourself with ONE game company means that you're practically guaranteeing EA's dominance over the whole sports game market, and I can only hope that gamers are more intelligent than to give their dollars to EA based on name alone. I want Sega and whoever else makes sports games to make the best game and we'll see where the NFL and ESPN are after that. I'm not saying that player names and branding aren't important, because they are. Seeing my created player up against any virtual version of a professional athlete that I see on TV every week is highly entertaining, even though I know in my head it's just a representation of that character. If the game companies without the licenses allow you to rename all the characters, that's one way around this insane business. I dunno, I'm just ranting at this point, but I just think EA is out to ruin games just to make a buck. Competition is fun, no need to bury all your rivals.

    Paper Mario - Complete

So I beat Paper Mario last night. The last boss wasn't as difficult as I had thought, I was just ill-equipped for the fight the first couple times I tried. I had to go back to town and retrieve all my food from the store, I hadn't brought any on my first foray into the Door.
The game itself is wonderful, the situations and little details were amazingly well put together. I love the Luigi cameos and I really hope Paper Luigi comes out, it's just too funny a story not too. When I bought the game I had no idea what to expect. Reading the reviews, I thought it'd be a pretty regular game, just a sidestory to the whole Mushroom Kingdom series; but now I realize that Nintendo is really trying to expand the world that Mario lives in and I hope that the recent announcement about the in-house animation department really takes the environments in their games and brings them to life. Every single character in the towns has a story to tell.
It's 8am on Boxing Day and I've got to leave for work. If I have the time later on, I'll write a proper review of the game, but I've got a 24-paper J to get through tonight. I might not be back for awhile.

    Christmas Day

    5pm - 12/25/04

So I got home at 3am last night after an interesting night of poker with the guys. We played two games, both of which I lost. We played at Christi's place, never been there before and I couldn't tell you where it is because I wasn't paying attention. He has a nice place. Conversation was pretty much non-existant, we were all so messed up that I don't think we noticed. I wonder what Christi does now, he studied to be an actor, so if he's doing that still, he must be doing pretty good. His place was cool. It was nice and spacious. I can't wait to move out next summer. I feel so old now that it's almost embarassing that I still live at home, but I haven't had much success with my writing lately. Writer's block sucks, and not having an artist to draw my comic isn't helping either. Janine asked me for a copy of my comic script today, she read the first few pages and already showed some interest. She's moving to Brazil for awhile, so maybe in her spare time she'll do up some sketches.
Anyways, first journal post in a long time, and of all places, it's at Gamespot. I figure anyone who knows me won't come here looking for it, and I don't mind having a group of fellow gamers read this.

I was playing Paper Mario last night before I left, got my butt handed to me by the Shadow Queen. Probably shouldn't have used up all my items when I wasn't hurting her at all. Today I'm going to try again, the save slot is right before I have to go through all that dialogue though. I wonder if there's a way to skip it. If I beat the game today, I suppose I'll write a review.
