Deadliest Video Game Character Season 2, Episode 1, Link vs Cloud

Two of the most popular swordsman in all of video game history. One of the most debated video game fights is going to be settled here. Cloud Strife, First Class Soldier, vs Link, the Hero of Time. For this battle we will use 5 categories, Physical Abilities, Magic, Main Weapon, Equipment and Fighting Abilities/Tactics. Also since there are numerous versions of Link and Cloud in game, we will take what each character commonly uses and are iconic for.

    Physical Abilities:

    Link:

The incarnations of Link have varied in physical abilities. However Link has shown on multiple occasions have demonstrated superhuman abilities. Link has shown without any additional equipment has shown to push large granite block much bigger then himself. Link has shown the ability to also be able to wrestle Gorons and stop charging rams and toss them to the side. Most impressively in Twilight Princess, Link (with the addition of the iron boots) was able to stop Dangoro, a steel armor wearing super Goron who is several times the size of any normal Goron, during a Goron roll and toss him into lava. The Triforce of Courage gives him the courage andthe strength to fight the Triforce of Power. Link has also proven to be an impressive acrobat. When fighting enemies he constantly dodges enemies by doing flips and side steps, even as a child. Link also has great stamina and durability. The Triforce of Courage grants Link the resilience to never give up, and keep on fighting as if he's 100% strength, even when in critical conditions. Link can fall down several stories, take point blank explosions and magic attacks and simply shake it off. With the pegasus boots, Link is able to run and charge at superhuman speeds. He is even fast enough to destroy gigantic stone blocks by charging into them, however he can only run in a straight line with the boots. He also has the golden gauntlets, which give him the strength to lift huge granite pillars and toss them. However the gauntlets don't improve his striking power, and only brace him arms against intense pressure. Also with Roc's feather, Link is able to jump much higher then he usually can, even gliding for a brief period of time.

    Cloud:

Due to being exposed to mako energy, Cloud became a super soldier. Cloud easily can slice through brick and metal, and easily collapses buildings from slashes from his sword. He also is fast enough to run up collapsing buildings, and can jump several stories in a single bound. Cloud has overpowered several large enemies including the enormous dragon Bahamut SIN. Cloud has also incredible durability, being able to take multiple stab wounds and survive. Also Cloud is able to take several magic attacks. He even took the attack "Supernova" from Sephiroth, which essentially was the intense heat from the sun due to a meteor crashing summoned by Sephiroth. He has been shown to easily wield large two handed sword with minimal effort, and swing his sword insanely fast. Cloud has reflexes fast enough to even deflect bullets. Cloud has withstood intense beating, being poisoned, and has always survived. Cloud is truly a super soldier.

    Edge:

    Cloud

Although Link certainly has demosntrated superhuman capabilities, Cloud is a living super soldier, and easily destroys buildings just from swinging his sword.

    Magic:

    Link:

Link has shown to be great with magic. First of all he has 3 medallions infused in his sword, with Bombos, Ether and Quake. Bombos is an attack in which Link uses his spin attack, which is followed by a ring of fire and several explosions. Ether is another attack in which stabs his sword in the ground and lightning strikes all around him. If the enemy does not die from the attack, they are frozen. The attack is also more effective against airbourne units. Quake is an attack in which Link thrusts his sword into the ground, and causes an Earthquake in the general areas. On top of that Link often can summon spells using rods. Mostly he can either summon spells with the fire rod or the ice rod which are just basic fire and ice attacks. Also Link can use several more powerful spells. His most powerful spell is Din's fire, which Linksummons a dome of firearound his body that can kill, damage, or stun any surrounding enemies. Naayru's Lovespell surrounds Link's body with a slightly transparent blue diamond for a substantial amount of time which prevents all damage, but doesn't stop flinching from enemy strikes. However once this spell is cast, it will use all of Link's magic regardless if he wants to. He also has Farore's wind, which can teleport him to certain locations, however the spell is useless in a 1 on 1 fight scenario. Link also can infuse his arrows with different magic, including light arrows, fire arrows and ice arrows. Link also can use the spin attack, which is his most powerful sword attack in which he charges up his sword and spins around, destroying or hurting anything within several meters of him. Link also can use the Shield Spell, which reduces all damage he takes by half for a period of time. Also with the magic cape Link is able to go invisible. Link can only use a certain limit of magic, and does eventually run out if he uses too much magic.

    Cloud:

Cloud has been shown very capable of using multiple different types of materia. Cloud however is limited with the amount of materia he can equip with materia slots in his certain items (2 with his sword, and 3 with his armor for this fight). Also Cloud's fighting style relies on his swordsman skills, and his physical fighting abilities rather then materia when fighting opponents. He also limits his usage due to the fact it damages the planet. However Cloud can still use powerful materia if he is required to. He can use different types of materia, including both elemental materia and non-elemental materia. One of his more basic materia's is the Firaga materia, which casts a large fire ball at the enemy. He also can cast Thundaga in which he can summon lightning on his opponent. Another elemental spell he can use is Quaga, which is a large earth elemental spell. His non-elemental spells include Barrier, which reduces physical damage taken for a period of time. He also can use Cometeo, in which he summons a comet toward his enemies. Cloud is a very capable materia user. Cloud however like Link can only use a certain amount of materia, and runs out of MP if he uses too much.

    Edge:

    Link

Although Cloud has proven he is very skilled with materia, he is a bit limited by materia slots. They certainly are powerful, but they aren't quite as deep as Link's arsenal of magic, also Link can infuse his materia within his weapons like the bow and arrow.

    Main Weapon:

    Link:

Link uses the legendary Master Sword, which is also known as evil's bane. It is a 4 foot double edged one handed sword. When Link is at full health he is able shoot beams out of his sword. When he loses health, he is still able to use the Skyward strike, but he has to do by charging his sword by pointing it to the sky. The Master Sword however can do many other things as well. It is extremely effective against magic attacks, being able to easily destroy magical barriers no other weapon can, and can also reflect magic as well. It also has shown the ability to absorb different forms of energy including electricity, and by absorbing this energy it can augment its attacks. It is most effective against dark magic though. Also the Master Sword is immune to any physical damage and cannot break.

    Cloud:

The Buster Sword is Cloud's iconic two handed single edge 6 foot sword. The sword is huge, and also being very thick approximately an entire foot thick. The sword itself was passed down to him by Cloud's first class soldier friend Zack Fair, who had it passed down by his first class soldier mentor Angeal. The sword is capable of tons of damage, and shows little wear or tear even when cutting through buildings. The sword has 2 materia slots. The sword has been capable of destroying some of the most powerful enemies in Final Fantasy. Cloud has a strong emotional Link with the sword since it is the living legacy of his friend Zack. Cloud has become incredibly skilled with sword, and although it is huge and heavy, Cloud wields it with ease.

    Edge:

    Link

Although the Buster Sword has an edge with length and thickness, and it certainly capable of destructive abilities, the fact that the Master Sword can absorb certain types of magic, and can reflect and break through magical barriers and attacks makes it have the edge here. Also the fact its one handed allows him to equipt a shield.

    Equipment:

    Link:

Link has a gigantic arsenal of equipment. Of course I'll start with listing his armor and things he wears:

Hero's Tunic-Link's iconic green tunic. Riveted chain mail is hidden underneath the tunic.

Magic Cape-Enables Link to turn invisible using his magic.

Golden Gauntlets-Enables Link to lift large things such as granite pillars, and braces him against intense pressure (does not increase striking power).

Hylian Shield-Indestructible shield created by the goddess Laanayru. Can block all forms of physical and magic attacks.

Iron Boots-Make Link extremely heavy so he can go under water, or just to add extra weight against strong opponents.

Pegasus Boots-Enables Link to run and charge at superhuman speeds. However he can only run in a straight line.

Roc's feather-Allows Link to jump much higher then normal, and even glide for a short period of time.

Water Dragon's Scale-Gives Link the ability to swim extremely fast, breathe underwater and perform underwater spin attacks in which he can use to shoot out of the water as well.

Now here are Link's items and equipment

Bow and Arrow-Link can shoot arrows at opponents. He can also shoot fire arrows, ice arrows, light arrows and bomb arrows.

Water Bombs-Link can toss or roll bombs to either explode certain puzzles, or hurt enemies greatly. Can also be used in water.

Boomerang-used to stun and/or damage enemies. Can be aimed to hit multiple target. Also can be defused and picked up by Link.

Double Clawshot-enables Link to grapple onto two targets by hanging off one and using the second Clawshot to grapple another target.

    Fire Rod-shoots fire at enemies.

    Ice Rod-Freeze enemies.

    Cloud:

Cloud mostly relies on his buster sword for equipment, however Cloud is able to equip 1 armor piece of armor alongside his basic SOLDIER first class armor. Cloud uses the Dragon Armlet. It has a 58 physical defense rating and a 47 magic defense rating. On top of that it also has 3 materia slots, and halves all fire, ice and lightning damage. Cloud's default SOLDIER armor does not provide great protection against attack. It is easily penetrated by swords and most forms of damage, however Cloud is able to easily move with his armor and it has a shoulder guard.

    Edge:

    Link

Link has an easy edge here. Link's arsenal is pretty vast and although Cloud has good armor in the Dragon Armlet, he really doesn't use equipment other then his Buster Sword.

    Fighting Ability

    Link:

Link has little formal training as a warrior. The most training any Link has really gotten was in Twilight Princess where Link learned several techniques from the hero shade. Despite little training Link is an amazing swordsman, and is a master of weapons. Even as a kid Link is able to defeat gigantic monsters that entire races fear. Link incorporates his impressive acrobats into his fighting style, and he is able to dodge and counter opponents. Link is a master of weapons, and can use all of his entire arsenal with great accuracy and mastery. Link also is an amazing tactician, and is great at exploiting weaknesses and countering opponents. He has faced much more powerful opponents before, yet Link always seems to defeat them. Also with the Triforce of Courage, Link never gives up, and he always finds away, even with impossible odds. He has great experience fighting demons feared by gods, and Ganon who has the Triforce of power. In Majoras Mask, a child Link was able to defeat the demon Majora, who had the power to destroy all of Termina. Link also often uses his opponents magic against them reflecting the magic. He takes advantage of when opponents are weak and strikes.

    Cloud:

Cloud has the memories and training of his first class soldier friend Zack. Due to this Cloud is a master with the sword, and can defeat countless opponents. He is also experienced in hand to hand combat. Cloud uses his massive sword, and his extreme super soldier abilities to its max. Cloud with the help of his squad, was even able to defeat the insanely powerful Safer Sephiroth, who had god like powers. Although Cloud is mentally unstable at times, due to his clash to fight his darkness within and his guilt from the death of his friends, he never gives up, and often catches cocky opponents like Sephiroth off guard by unleashing insanely power attack. These attacks are called limit breaks. Cloud has seven Limit Breaks.Braver and Cross-Slash are his level 1 limits, Blade Beam and Climhazzard are his level 2 limits, Meteorain and Finishing Touch are his level 3 limits; and his level 4 limit is Omnislash. Cloud is able to use his limit breaks as he takes damage from attacks and gets angrier at his opponents. He must save up his anger if he wants to use a higher level limit break, other wise he has to wait again. Also note that this meter charges up slowly and Cloud will have to wait if he wants to use limit breaks. Still Cloud has the strongest limit breaks in all of Final Fantasy VII.

    Edge:

    Cloud

Although Link is an incredible tactician, and certainly a great swordsman, Cloud has had a lot more formal training. Not to mention his limit break techniques can be insanely powerful and fatal.

    Battle:

Just outside Lake Hylia. There are plenty of towers and several small islands in the laker.

    FIGHT!

Cloud goes out searching. He takes his buster sword out seeing an unknown man in green. He suddenly sees several arrows fly at him. He quickly rolls out of the way and the charges Link. Link keeps firing arrows, but Cloud is able to easily deflect them. Cloud jumps high in the air is about to slash Link. Link then shoots a bomb arrow at Cloud. The bomb hits and Cloud falls to the ground. He shakes off the blow and then get up. Link then pulls out his fire rod and shoots at Cloud. Cloud sidesteps and dodges it. He then charges Link. Link gets his sword and shield out and manages to block the attack. Cloud presses on the attack slashing at Link, while Link blocks. Cloud manages to finally land a hit and Link flies back. Cloud continues to attack and lunges in the air to encounter Link. Link recover and hits Cloud with his shield. Cloud falls to the ground, but manages to land on his feet. Link hits a tower and falls to the ground. He gets up though and is ready to fight. Cloud uses Blade Beam. Link attempts to deflect it with his sword, but it manages to hurt him. He recovers and then uses him boomerang. Cloud hits it away then charges Link. The boomerang though circles back and stuns Cloud. Link then takes his pegasus boots and charges Cloud. He charges into Cloud and they smash through several towers. Cloud then grabs Link and uses his momentum and tosses him back into a wall. Cloud then uses Meteorain on Link. Link does a backflip to try and dodge it, but some still hit him. Cloud then charges and smashes Link into the water. Cloud uses barrier and waits for Link to come up to the surface. Then a bomb is thrown out of the water and lands in between Clouds legs. It detonates as Cloud manages to get out of the way, but the bomb distracted him enough that Link then spins out of water and hits Cloud on his back. He then attempts to stab Cloud in the ground, but Cloud rolls out of the way then kicks Link's back sending him several meters forwards and Link falls on his stomach. Cloud then summons cometeo on Link. Link uses his magic cape and dissapears. Cloud looks around and gets hit in the back hard by Links sword. He then summons Thundaga and it hits Link. He then smashes Link with the buster sword into another tower. Cloud jumps in the air and uses Braver. Link picks up the tower and tosses it at Cloud. Cloud smashes right through it, but Link manages to roll forward just in time. Cloud is quick to react and kicks Link behind him. Link falls over and is slow to get up. Cloud then uses Firaga, but Link gets his shield out and blocks it. Cloud then attempts to uses Thundaga again, but Link absorbs it with his sword. Cloud charges him and uses Cross Slash, Link manages to roll to the side and does an uppercut slice which also shocks Cloud. Cloud is shocked for a bit, but gets up. The two fighter ready themselves. Cloud then charges, Link blocks his attacks with his shield. He then counters and hits Cloud in the back. Cloud regains his balance and charges Link again, Link sidesteps, and tries to strike Cloud's back, however Cloud manages to react quickly, and ducks under it, and then counters and smashes Link high in the sky. Cloud lunges at him, but Link manages to use his claw shot and grips Cloud. He then brings Cloud towards him and throws him down in the ground. Cloud recovers in mid air and lands on his feet. He looks around for Link. He hears something behind a tower so he lunges at it and smash's it. Behind the tower lies a bomb and it explodes. Cloud is sent flying back, and Link shoots him with an ice arrow as he is flying back. Cloud freezes. Link uses spin attack and hits Cloud off a tower. Cloud bounces off the tower and lands on the ground. He is slow to get up and is angry. He then charges at Link using Omnislash at insanely fast speed. As he does this, Link uses Bombos. Cloud lunges in toward Link at the ring of fire. Several explosions go off everywhere and smoke arises. The smoke finally clears and Link is stands wounded over top of Clouds body.

    KO!

    Result:

    Link

Cloud clearly was a stronger fighter and more formally trained then Link. Cloud pressed on with an aggressive assault and landed strong hits on Link. However Link managed to counter Cloud's assaults and he never let Cloud overwhelm him. He managed to stay strong, and due to Link's great resilience he was able to take a pounding from Cloud. Link managed to use his tactics to try to land a powerful combo and took advantage of Cloud's aggresiveness. Both warriors were getting weaker and Cloud attempted to finish Link off. However Link expected Cloud to attack and countered by using his magic. Cloud is powerful, but he definitely can be knocked out by being engulfed in a ring of fire and being pummeled by several very powerful explosions. Overall Link's tactical mind, his large amount of different items and more varied magic managed to give him the edge over Cloud during this very close fight.

    Zelda Timeline: Adult Timeline

    Now the adult timeline

    The Wind Waker

Centuries pass, and Ganondorf escapes the Sacred Realm. With no Link to stop him, the goddesses flood Hyrule, making the former great field's now large oceans with islands. Ganondorf tries to obtain the triforce so he can wish all the water away and rule Hyrule. A new Link stops Ganondorf from obtaining the tri-force and stabs the Master Sword in his skull turning him into stone, and then Ganondorf is crushed from the waves of the sea. So now there is no Ganon or Ganondorf, and the Master Sword is never used again since it is stuck in Ganondorf's stone under the sea.

    Link's Awakening

Since Link's Awakening is just a dream it doesn't mean much, but since there is a lot of sea, and no game before Wind Waker have a vast ocean or seagulls for that matter, Link's awakening must go after Wind Waker. The only problem is that it says in the prologue that Link's Awakening is after Link defeats Ganon. Well my only excuse is that since Link Awakening released before Ocarina of Time, which was the first game to introduce Ganondorf, it wouldn't make much sense if it said Ganondorf since nobody knew who Ganondorf was, it wouldn't make since to say after defeating Ganondorf, so they said Ganon who was the main villain of Zelda at the time.

    Phantom Hourglass

The sequel to the Wind Waker is the Phantom Hourglass. In the Phantom Hourglass, Tetra/Zelda in Wind Waker gets kidnapped by a mysterious Ghost Ship. Link gets washed up on an island, and must save her. Link defeats the ocean king which is the end of the Phantom Hourglass.

    Spirit Tracks

The sequel to the Phantom Hourglass is Spirit Tracks. After the events of Phaton Hourglass, Tetra and her pirates are sailing around. They create New Hyrule a which becomes a prosperous kingdom. It is then disturbed by the demon king Malladus. The short of it is that Zelda loses her body and Link must defeat Malladus for her to get it back. During the creation of New Hyrule, the Kingdom creates the technological marvel, the train.

    So the timeline is

    Skyward Sword

    Minish Cap

    Four Swords

    Ocarina of Time

    Child

    Twilight Princess

    A Link to the Past

    Oracle of Ages/Seasons

    Four Sword Adventures

    Legend of Zelda (NES)

    Zelda II: Adventure of Link

    Adult

    Wind Waker

    Link's Awakening

    Phantom Hourglass

    Spirit Tracks

If you haven't noticed all of the adult timeline games feature the same Link with the same cartoonish art style (other than Link's Awakening) and all take place in a flooded Hyrule, so it makes sense, one side of the timeline is the more happy Wind Waker and the other is more dark and what Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess become. As of now this is what I think the Legend of Zelda Timeline is.
