Secret of N.I.M.H. 2 Timothy to the Rescue - Review.

Dug up this review to the sequel of "The Secret of N.I.M.H." from a while back. I wrote this immediately after viewing the film... Let's just say it wasn't pretty. So without further ado, here we go!

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where to begin? As you may be quite aware by now, the original "Secret of Nimh" was a movie beloved by many, and for good reason too! It mixed a dark, mature plot with a cast of likable, in-depth characters, beautiful scenery and a rousing score! Yet, it still managed to cater to both kids and adults alike. However, "The Secret of Nimh 2" has none of these qualities, and will leave fans and first time watchers sorely disappointed!

The story in this particular film is centered around Timothy, (Mr. and Mrs. Brisby's son from the first movie) as he sets off for Thorn Valley because Nicodemus, (the wise rat also from the first movie) prophesied that he would be a savor of the inhabitants and would faithfully follow in his late father's footsteps. From there on out, Timmy is thrown from one dangerous situation to the next; discovering if he can truly match the potential that his Dad laid before him and become a great hero!

If the plot might sound cliche and played out that's because it really is. Unlike the plot prior to this film, it contains barely a bit of originality and or many surprises. And for some odd reason the directors felt that throwing in sing-along bits would add to the experience. Simply put: Despite the setting, you've seen all this before.

But hey, it can't be all bad, right? Well, no. Not right. It is bad. The acting, while not horrendous, is definitely not up to snuff of the previous flick. In fact, nothing is on par with the first movie. Art has gone from inspirationally drawn and fluidly animated to a Saturday morning cartoon appearance. Frames of animation skip, the characters mouths are rarely in sync with the words they're speaking and the list just goes on.

Audio doesn't fair much better. Voice actors are nearly entirely different this time around, and some of the characters voices can be downright grating at times! And when those vocals are put into song you can bet that you'll want to turn the volume down completely. The only person who dared to reprise his role in this sequel is Dom Deluise, (Jeremy Crow). But even he does a half-baked job as well. His Dialogue just isn't as witty and comes off a little forced.

Music isn't that memorable either and pales in comparison to the originals brilliant soundtrack. Only did the second song in the ending credits make any kind of attempt at being catchy/decent.

In conclusion, this is just a cheap straight-to-dvd cash in and not much more. It won't enthrall you, entice you, or bring you into it's world. Truth be told, the only magic this film carries is the fact that it ends. Well... in all fairness, it wasn't AS BAD as I was expecting it to be, but that doesn't mean it was good either. The main problem with this film doesn't lie in its poor plot or bad art, but that it doesn't even feel remotely related to anything NIMH. It feels like it's own separate movie hiding behind the title of a much more successful and enjoyable one!

    Overall score: 2.5.

Summer may be at a close, but fall is welcomed with open arms. Also, music!

Summer was excellent! Started off a bit on the slow side, but once me and my bud had time to get together things began moving at a smooth clip and made for some good times! Between going to see District 9, navagating the neighborhood in the exhausting heat, trying to best the high score of 15 rounds in Nazi Zombies and so forth. Once it got rolling, it didn't stop.

But now I'm ready for the feeling of fall. While a 90 day vacation is nice, you tend to miss the beautiful weather and the sight of lush vegetation. And that's what I love about summer; it sticks around long enough to be thoroughly enjoyable, but never overstays its warm (and I do mean warm) welcome. Fall is in the air and something tells me its going to be a great season!

And in other news, I have yet another video up and running. This time around it centering on a song from the Kingdom Hearts universe. I nearly forgot just how lovely of a soundtrack that series carried. I hope to have done the main menu song justice in that regard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5q0CxRZcVw

Until next time, this is EyeShatteredSky signing off!

EDIT: I went back and corrected "spring" into "fall". I don't know what got me thinking that spring came after summer, but anyone with half a brain would know that fall is what actually follows. Facts can be a strange and curious thing, huh?

Shadow's gone from hired assassin to musical melody.

You know that feeling you get when you're being watched? Like your intuition is off the hook, and you can't help but constantly be on-guard every waking moment of your life? Always keeping your eyes peeled for the source of it all, always being cautious around friends and family, in fear that they might be out to get you?

Yeah, me neither. Here's my next video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzVjkvKr69s

It's Shadow's theme from Final Fantasy VI. (Black killer pooch not included.)
