My Friends

27Jun 08

Yesterday, I was ashamed to be a member of this site. The amount of personal messages, emails, and Xbox Live messages that were telling me that I was a racist, because I did not like Obama is staggering to me. I have thus concluded that this site is no longer a forum that I am willing to discuss my political and religious views on.

I would like to say this is the first time that this has happened, but it is not--part of the reason that this has offended me. I think that Gamespot is a great place, but the anonymity of the internet has gotten to the point that I cannot accept it any longer. You may remember that I was made fun of by many people when I first doing video blogs. I was able to get past that and some of the other criticisms that I have received, but there was one message I can't really handle.

You are the worst kind of person in the world Buffone. You don't deserve to live, your life is meaningless, you don't do anything good only hate on others. All of your "accomplishments" like you emblems just show how you have no life and you only got Soapbox because the staff feels bad for you. You are a racist and a terrible person, don't ever make another blog. One more thing, I hope you die of your ****in cancer.

That is a quote from a email I received.

I hope that you are as shocked as I am. This was an email, so I was not able to "report to moderators" or anything else. I just can't tell you how upset I am right now. I know that there is ignorance in this world, but I thought that Gamespot made up of people of higher morality than that. It is just really terrible, thats all I can say.

I wanted to get this off my chest, I hope to get over it, but it will always be something that stays with me. I think the best thing is to just contine to write and do my thing. Thus, the special 250th blog tomorrow.

-Doug

Oh...oh my God. That's, in all actuality, the worst thing I've ever heard someone say to another human being.

I'm just shocked. I'm so sorry Buffone.

    Doug, I am speechless.
That message is an absolute disgrace. I just can't believe how someone could say such a thing. I've had some nasty comments on this website before. But they've never been that low. Maybe set your profile to 'friends only' for the time being? It might filter out some of those horrific comments!

Just keep doing what you do best. Don't let the minority put you off.

This is unfortunately the sad state some people have degraded to. I would have thought, and been prepared for, a bit of a backlash whenever ones political and religious views are brought up. This email you received goes so far beyond what a can be remotely considered rational that it scares me. Internet anonymity aside its scary that there are some people depraved enough to be thinking these type of things.

That's utter-bullocks. I am making a freaking vlog about this. Who is that guy's e-mail? I am going to make a mockery out of the jerk and show him what real humanity is: A kind, careful being that supports other humans with the same character.

That e-mailer is not a freaking human, he is an evil and disgraceful creature who has a deformed personality with no goal in life at all. Give me that guy's e-mail. I am going to blabber him with man talk... (text).

I am in utter shock. It just shows how cruel people are in this world. Where is freedom of speech now a days? You can't have your views or anything without some dumb founded person who has to take everything out of context and start ranting on like that one email. Don't listen to them Doug you are a great person and a great writer and your opinions are your opinions. Like my grandfather used to say, " what goes around comes around". They will get theirs.

  • capin131

    Posted Jun 27, 2008 6:26 pm PT

Wow, that's freaking terrible. I don't know what would come over someone to say that to another person. It takes a "special" kind of person to say something like that. And for the people sending Doug messages over his support of McCain, grow up. You can disagree on policy on principle, not because of any "racism". You don't support Obama by saying ridiculous stuff like that.

Pretty much speechless at that e-mail you received. Some people just have an amazing amount of hate in their heart. I feel sorry for them.

Holy crap, Doug. I've run into some nasty people on the internet, but nothing to that extent. I mean, a comment on my latest video was a pretty simple "**** off" but nothing that bad. The best thing to do is ignore and report these people and move on. You're better than them.

I'm so sorry to see something like this happen Doug. The Internet has become a very ugly place, where people like that guy come to spew their anger and frustrations on people that do not deserve it.

I have to admit that I just glazed over your blog yesterday, since American politics are not something I delve into a lot, especially not on the Internet. I'm sorry you got so many hateful responses. You're a good guy Doug, you don't deserve this crap. In fact, no one does.

Not that it'll make you feel much better Doug, but some of us who write reviews for GameSpot receive emails and PMs like that (though thankfully not *quite* that offensive for the most part) on a semi-regular basis--especially when we work on high profile games. Anonymity and jealousy can do horrible things to people, as evidenced by the email that you received. One day the author of that crap will learn that karma always catches up with you in the end.

Sorry to see you feel like that, Doug. I, for one, reserve all my thoughts about anything not related to games to myself, since the internet is such an insane place. I hope you get to discover that not all people are like that, and those who are, are sad individuals with no life whatsoever.

If you ever get messages like that over GS, let me know and I'll deal with them personally. And you should report whatever you get on LIVE that offends you, it's not because it's there the people can get caught for harassment.

GreggD... I can't believe you would say that. It's his blog, and he can post any opinions he wants, and NO one, no matter what is said, deserves to be told to "go die."

Anyways, sorry to hear that... I can't believe someone would say something like that to anybody...

I wish I could voice my opinion here, but as you just figured out, there is a place and time for everyrthing, this is just not that place or time.

The worst you said was he was inexperienced, which is fair game for debate, but I didn't see anything racist. Unfortunately some peoples ignorance knows no bounds.

There is no reason for you to be ashamed of being a Gamespotter. We should all be ashamed that that person is a Gamespotter. Hurtful as those words are, the best you can do is just ignore it, and focus on the opinions of your readers that matter, and that can hold an actual conversation with you.

Hey Doug, just thought I would drop by and say that I can't believe what I just read. Expressing political or religious views is definately a touchy subject here, well anyplace on the web for that matter, but for someone to come out and be that crewel in an e-mail to a (I am guessing) complete stranger is rather disturbing and shows a lot about that person.

Now I know nothing that we can say would really make it "better", but just keep in mind that there are many of us on this website that have nothing but respect for you and look forward to seeing/hearing your opinions on everything gaming related.

I do hope you have something planned for before E3 my good man, definitely would like to read or see something.

Doesn't surprise me. Their are ways you can degrade people online rather then face to face that make some people think it okay... but what that person said to you, was going beyond the fringe. Anyone who would wish another person dead for simple things like that is either mentally ill or evil but either way, it was a disgraceful message which any good human being would have felt amazed at.

  • SaMuRaI_Slice

That sucks you're being treated this way since you never really call people out or start things.

I've become so calloused towards the internet since I've moderated forums for quite some time, and my youtube channel, and my opinions in general tend to be very negative. So A lot of people throw personal insults at me and such.

But at least you've learned something? That's the only way I can spin this in a positive way. To me it seems pretty obvious that you do not mix actual important issues with internet forums. People don't take that stuff seriously and only see things how they want to. For instance "Oh he's not voting for a black guy? He must be racist" that's how everyone sees things. It's sad but true. I agree with you on your stance that politics should be an important part of people's lives, but the internet isn't a good place for that type of stuff. No one takes them seriously.

But on the other hand, there is a chance that these people ARE slightly into politics, enough to know that Obama "should" be the next president and everyone who disagrees is insane. I'll admit that I strongly disagree with your support for McCain, but I don't think that has anything to do with your personal views on race, I guess you just REALLY care about past experience the president has had. Most liberals are not as lenient. If you think this is bad though. I live in Newton Mass. (Try looking it up). Not only is it in the state of liberal views, but it's the most liberal town in the entire state. We were having a vote on a Tax Override that would redesign one of our schools, the total cost would be somewhere close to 3 Million dollars, it's going to have three swimming pools (Sounds like the exact type of thing McCain would be against). Voting Yes would pass the override, and voting no would cancel it. My family, was against this stupid idea to have a school which was already perfectly fine, have three more swimming pools and other needless additions. We put up a sign saying "Vote no" and it was torn up on our yard. It's ridiculous how narrow-minded people are.

I sort of went off on a tangent. I hope something useful was in this comment.

    Posted Jun 27, 2008 8:17 pm PT

Well, I'm still technically pretty new here, so maybe it's not my place to comment on this, but I don't really care so...

Doug, don't sweat this pathetic person who e-mailed you, or anyone else who talks trash. This YOUR blog, man. If people don't like it, they don't have to read it. I found your blog when I was searching for something game related on google about a year ago and have been keeping up with it ever since. I just happened to watch one of your video blogs which, at the time, was at the top and I found it very interesting so I bookmarked it. It's cool to see other gamers who are as passionate about gaming and especially videogame collecting as I am.

I almost never actually signed up here because there are so many immature people on this site, like the one who e-mailed you for example. Every news post turns into a fanboy war, flame war, etc. and I think it's silly. Although, I finally registered because I keep up with a few blogs here which have inspired me to start doing some of my own soon, and I also like the game tracking and other features of the site. You just have to learn to ignore all of the BS and realize that most people who act this way are simply jealous of you for whatever reason, or just want to bash you beause they don't share the same opinion or outlook on things as you do. Which is really, really ignorant.

Like I said, I've been reading your blog for about a year, and I never once thought of you as having a "Holier than thou" attitude, like HightimesBX mentioned. Maybe that's a matter of opinion, but overly arrogant people always get on my nerves and I've never seen that in any of your posts or videos.

We're all here because we love games, obviously. So why wouldn't you, actually why SHOULDN'T you show off your signed super limited gunmetal PS3. I sure as hell would. I just don't understand that. People, don't hate. Congratulate.

Keep doing what you're doing, Doug. You're an asset to a site that is for the most part, infested with idiots. You're one of the few who keep it a cool enough place to keep visiting.

PS: Keep fighting the good fight and I'll keep you in my prayers like I have been. Peace.

  • LiK

    Posted Jun 27, 2008 8:26 pm PT

Doug, ignore those idiots. You should voice your opinions as proudly as you can. Don't let bullies try to tell you what or how to think. I would gladly argue my side of an argument and not worry what others think of me. You should do the same. If they can't understand your side of an argument or debate, then they're narrow-minded morons who expect the world to agree with them about everything. That's neither democracy or free speech.

I don't like Obama either but does that make me a racist as well? That's just silly. Only fools would say that by using the race card. I suppose people who don't like Clinton hate white people then if that's the case. Screw them, Doug.

I honestly can't believe someone would say something like that. Whoever they are should be ashamed of themselves. People can say some pretty big things when they type from the comfort of their own computer...but in the end the only thing that it shows is that they are nothing but cowards.
I don't know you well on Gamespot but I've read/watched your blogs on several occasions. I've always enjoyed them and I'm glad to see that you'll continue to do so.
As for your blog yesterday, as a political science major i enjoyed reading it. I too am a McCain supporter. But other than that, I'm glad you're staying put and I hope that coward out there who wrote that to you feels ashamed of himself

Jesus! Looking at some of these replies by some people you think a national disaster just struck! Seriously, people, this crap happens to people every day on the Internet, but the length of some of these replies is ridiculous.

  • therealtorb

    Posted Jun 27, 2008 9:43 pm PT

Hey man, I know you don't know me, but whatever it's all cool. Basically, if you can't voice your own opinions on your own slice of Gamespot, then what the crap can you do here? I think you did the right thing and voiced your own opinion in the way you wanted to. I don't think you should conform to a way another person thinks you would just so you don't "offend" them and cause them to email you hatemail.

It's this kind of individualism that keeps everyone from having the same blog. From being freakin robots who are all alike and share the same thoughts and feelings. Obviously politics mean a lot to you. So, this being your blog, the place where you get to talk about and share the things that are on your mind, I say post away!! Who is anyone else to tell you what you can and can't do on your blog? I enjoy reading your blogs, even your political ones, because it gives me a perspective different than what I typically think about. Which is why I like it, because it's different. It's you man, just you, on this blog. Don't worry about people who tell you to change and ignore these idiots who are trying to get inside your head.

What it boils down to is, if you leave Gamespot, you'll be doing exactly what they want you to do.

Karma, dude, karma. That dude will get something crappy to hit him.

It's a shame that people act like that, but anonymity proves one thing, most people are jerks. Yeah. I've been working retail, and I'll have women come up and start gossiping about how their gal pal is cheating on her husband and laughing and crap. They see my cross and then shut up, but whatever. Most people tell me I shouldn't wear my cross out, but hey, it's my freaking cross, I'll wear it in any way I want.

Dude, don't let it get to you. It happened to me, in person at that. People think just because you work somewhere they can say whatever they want, but I've gotten good at talking crap about people and making them think it's funny rather than an insult.

Look, forget that though, just remember, a lot of people are jerks looking for any excuse to make a big scene out of nothing. It happens all the time. All you have to do though is keep being the best you can be and the freaking peanut gallery will always remain in that same spot while you move ahead.

Maybe it wasn't Buddha, but the moral of the story is the same...

A man was hurling insults at Buddha, but Buddha ignored him. The man continued to abuse him, further aggravated by being ignored. Buddha continued with his task at hand, paying the man no heed, unperterbed by his words.

Eventually Buddha raised his head and calmly asked the man, "If you offer a man a gift, and he does not accept it, then to whom does the gift belong?"
    Puzzled, the man replies "Me."
"And if you offer me abuse, and I refuse to accept it, then to whom does that abuse belong?"

It's really sad, that things like this are becoming more common and much more uglier in GameSpot over the past few months. People are now over-excercising their freedom of opinion, and freedom of expression, without caring that they are violating others. When, you said, your opinion on McCain and Obama, you were giving your own opinion, and every sane person should have accepted it whether they liked it or not. Unfortunately, political agenda at times drives people to mindless fanaticism, and that bloke who abused you,had no idea, what he was speaking of. He was angry that not everyone in the world,is supporting the man,who he is supporting. That made him go f'ing nuts, and he picked at you.

I think that you should probably avoid, writing political opinions, and other much more knowledgable aspects on your blog. Because, these morons will harass you for some or the other reason, whatsoever. I think you could send PM's to your friends, when you want to discuss anything political, but it's best to keep such topics away from these pea-brained morons.

That's quite shocking, and something like that is bound to shake you up a bit. But like countless others have said, try and ignore it. I'd suggest removing your email from your contact information, but I wouldn't be ashamed of being a GameSpotter. A small group of idiots like that don't represent the majority, and no comments anything like that would be tolerated on the site.

I can't believe someone would email you that. It doesn't matter what you said, no one deserves a message like that. Like so many people have said, just ignore it and move on. You're a strong person so I think you shouldn't have a big problem with that.

That's absolutely horrible thing to say to someone. I'd wish to say the same to the person behind it but I won't go as low as he did. To be honest, as a non-American I mainly skip all the political blogs. And if some people can't stand to hear other people's opinions, they should do so too. Remember that the vast majority of your trackers are following you because they like you.

Wow... that is far beyond awful and is completely unforgivable. It's bad enough that person called you a racist for not liking someone that just happens to be black and I bet if you were black and he was white there wouldnt be a problem. But then wanting you to die really crossed the line and that person is clearly the one without a life if this is how s/he is finds entertainment. Those emblems you have, hold them high and don't be ashamed to have them or be a Gamespotter.

That's a horrible message you received, it's the lowest of the lowest.
Even if you don't have the same opinion as someone else, if that person talks about his opinion without being disrespectful, you should at least show respect for his opinion, but most of all, for the person.

I don't see any problem why Doug woudn't tell us about his new and autographed PS3 or what he achieved in life. I don't know, but I don't feel any jealousy when I read these blogs, on the contrary, I'm happy for Doug. Is it that hard/difficult to be happy for someone else?
