My Friends

The Dead Man Keeps Rollin with the Games

These are my personal thoughts regarding games and related stuff. I am not very good at gaming, but I have utmost enthusiasm for games. I am 28 years old, and I spent more than a decade playing games, starting off with an ancient Atari console. On multiple occasions, I thought about giving up gaming...but some great game brought me back in to gaming. This happened so many times that I doubt whether I'll ever quit gaming...

And yes, I am a big, big fan of The Beatles.

Yes, I got married. I have celebrated my one month of married life by taking out my wife to dinner and presenting her a cute teddy bear. So what happened in my life in the last one month or so? I thought my life would change forever after getting married, and it has been true to a large extent.

Unfortunately, my wife is neither a gamer nor in to rock music--two of my biggest obsessions. So how did we end up getting married? That's another long story which I will tell you some other day. For the time being, my gaming life has stalled; literally. Whereas I'd spend up to 3-4 hours gaming everyday, nowadays I don't even achieve that much in the whole week. Well, that's a bit too much saying, but gaming, as I knew it before, has changed.

When I play games now? When wife is not around, or busy doing other stuff. I have day offs on Friday and Saturday, and she has on Thursday and Friday. So Saturday is gaming day for me. Sounds sad, but that is the reality, and I am actually not complaining about the limited gaming time. I love spending time with my wife--probably I love that more than gaming. But still, it's difficult to let go of an 25 year old habit...lol. Yes, I've been gaming since 4 and now I'm 29.

    EDIT:

By the way, I thought it's appropriate to put up a wedding pic here

    You must play this game!

Okay, before I get in to Sims 3, I must talk about a few other things:

New Emblems: Well, it doesn't really matter much, but I got two new emblems; one is tagger flirt and the other is for helping gamespot in winning the webbies award. Now my total number of emblems is 9, so the PC afficionado one is not visible right away. I always envied the people with a lot of emblems, and it feels good to get my share of emblems.

Drakensang: After a two week break (due to vacation and increased work pressure), I resumed playing Drakensang. I played it a lot during the weekend (by the way, weekend in my country is Friday and Saturday), and I must say I am loving the game. I was a bit disappointed at the dark locations of level 3, but it seems that there's a lot of fun in the dark marshes of moorwood. The boss battles are getting more interesting, and so are the enemies I am encountering. There's no more dire wolves or big rats, there's venomous plants, harpies, fireflies, undead humans, skeletons and sorcerers to fight with. I just wish I had more time to play the game! I can't play more than 2 hours, which is unfortunate.

Spiderman: Web of Shadows: After encountering a very painful mission (where I am supposed to rescue the tinkerer from a jail), I kind of gave up playing this game. I might get back to it sometime, but right now I am just too engrossed in to Drakensang and Sims 3.

NFS: Underground 2 and NFS: Carbon: During a "games that don't fade away" phase, I installed and played UG2 for a long while. I still play it sporadically--sometimes I play it when I am talking to someone over the phone. I also installed carbon because I never quite played through that game. I feel it still has some replay value .

I think I'll post this as is and will write about Sims 3 in a later blog. I am quite disappointed with the level of activity my union is having now. Trying to find out what is going wrong.

On the eve of April Fools day, my computer got heavily affected by trojans. I was getting virus alerts all the time, and even after using an antivirus and a trojan killer, my Windows drive crashed. I had to use the bootable Win XP disk to format two of my partitions, and after almost 4 hours of ipod listening and dilly dallying with the PC, I managed to bring back life to my computer.

However, in due course, I lost the installation information for all the games I had installed--Burnout Paradise, Prince of Persia 2008, Tom Clancy's Hawx, The Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of The Witch King, The Withcer, Never Winter Nights and 2 expansions, Vampire: Masquerade Bloodlines, etc.

I installed the nvidia drivers and also my soundcard drivers. I installed firefox, and then when I wanted to re-install Witcher, my DVD Combo Drive (DVD read/write + CD read/write) stopped responding. I mean, it didn't read any DVDs at all. I got severely pissed off as all my new games are in DVD format. A few weeks ago when I went to the game store, I found someone asking for a CD version of GTA 4....lol....I think it'll take more than 20 CDs to hold GTA IV.

Anyway, so feeling frustrated, I decided to look in to my "retro games drawer". In this particular hiding(!) place, I have many old games stored in relatively better condition. So I decided to install these games:

    1. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots Expansion

    2. Need for Speed Underground 2

    3. Freedom Force VS 3rd Reich

Surprisingly enough, all of these games aged very well, and I am still having a lot of fun playing them. I have almost finished the "conquer the world campaign" of RON using Japan, and I've completed around 30% of NFS UG2. I didn't play freedom force much, as I was too indulged in the other two.

Yesterday I found out that my DVD Rom is working again (Surpirse!), but I don't feel like re-installing any of the previously installed games. I think I'd rather go for another round of conquer the world. I have only 3 turns left and 3 nations to conquer--I won't be able to conquer 100%. Need to be more strategic next time; I bought a lot of unnecessary territory battles when I could easily attack the capital and take over.

NFS UG2 is perhaps the best new generation NFS game. For a long while I thought Most Wanted was eligible for that crown, but actually it can't even hold a candle to UG2 which revolutionez the whole car customizing aspect of street racing games. Heavily inspired by Fast and The Furios, NFS UG2 is still highly recommended if you didn't play it yet. As an added bonus, you can go very high resolutions and anti aliasing with even a 2/3 year old graphics card.

    These games are indeed ageless...

I just bought a new Xbox360 gamepad last month. I am currently using it with my PC as a USB gamepad. For some weird reason, my computers frontal USB slots don't work. The PC vendor forgot the give connection to those slots, and thus I am being forced to use an extension cable to connect any and every USB devices I have.

So I bought a number of new games to play with my gamepad, and had fun playing those games for a few days. But unfortunately, I don't feel like playing them much. I discussed these games and my overall experience with the gamepad with my new friends in the Decision Based Gaming union. By the way, I am currently acting as the leader of that union, and I have a lot of plans to make the union a better place. However, the response haven't been quite encouraging yet--seems like people either don't check their PMs or they just don't bother about unions. Many people joins unions, and just forget about them. The same happened to me as well.

That is where I think Gamespot needs to work on. The unions can become more effective if people who log in to gs gets a snapshot of what happened in the unions they joined. Also, if someone is inactive in a union for a prolonged period, they should be automatically kicked out of it. Anyway....

The games I bought were Tomb Raider: Underworld, Prince of Persia 2008, Devil May Cry 4, etc.

I wonder what's in store for me in future, as far as gaming goes.

I have been a gamespot user for almost 7-8 years, but I became a member on 24th November, 2003. Since then, I've been a very regular visitor; often browsing for hours-- everyday of the week except weekends. Initially I was not very regular in GS; I was more of gamefaqs user. I was quite active in gamefaqs forums and I used to write game reviews also. However, after some time gamespot and gamefaqs boards got merged, and I started using gamespot more often.

It was easier to write reviews for gamespot, as they did not have to go through the moderator reviews like gamefaqs. But that also meant that there would be many half bred, incomplete, biased reviews. Still, I must say, I got some really good neutral view points from user reviews.

Gamespot has definitely helped me in finding new games to play, and also to know about certain aspects of games that I couldn't possibly find out on my own.

That said, I also hated many things about GS. The reviews are often biased, and immature. This phenomenon is getting more prevalent nowadays. It seems that most GS staff are console gamers (read Kids), and they play and review PC games reluctantly. Thus the PC game reviews are often half baked, and not thorough.

However, I am happy with the site as a whole. I think they should have some special offers for long time users, i.e. they can upgrade our account for 2/3 months, or give us something exclusive. The only reason for me to not upgrade was and still is unavailability of payment options from my country.

    Best of Luck Gamespot!

Yes, I am indeed waiting for Street Fighter IV. Out of desparation, I bought a PS2. Before buying the PS2, the last console I ownder was an Atari 600XL, so you can imagine what kind of a console gamer I am. I am a PC afficionado, as my GS emblem rightfully says. PC, as a gaming platform, has given me almost anything and everything apart from fighting games.

When I bought my first PC in 1999, I had three fighting games. Street Fighter Zero 2, Samurai Shodown 2 and Mortal Kombat 4. All there were PC versions, and they worked very well on the PC platform. However, after MK4, something stupid happened and all the game publishers stopped releasing PC versions of fighting games.

So there's no Deadly Alliance, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter 3 onwards or Soul Caliber for the PC. In fact, no next generation fighting game is available on the PC platform. Similarly, wrestling games have also been steered clear off PC platform.

WWE Raw and WCW Nitro had been the last two games released for PC, and both sucked badly.

Thus, when Capcom announced that they will bring out a PC version for the latest installment of my most favorite fighting game franchise, I was more than happy. I will definitely try to get hold of an original DVD of this game when it comes out later this year or earlier next year.

I have spent a lot of time playing SF II, SF Alpha 1-3 and lately, SF III 3rd strike. I can't wait to play another SF game on my PC.

    Three cheers for Capcom!

I am realizing that as I am reaching the 30s, I am slowly becoming a non-gamer. I don't spend too much time playing games, and I am also not playing too many new games. After spending almost a year long gaming hiatus, only recently I have started installing and playing some of the newer games.

Spore, Sims 2 Freetime, Call of Duty 4, Crysis, etc. However, there are still a few games that I am eagerly waiting for. No, it isn't the new NFS game or Fifa 09. There was a time when I could say that I could live 10 more years just to play a new fifa, nfs or Age of empires title. But I have mostly lost interest in those games. Especially, Fifa lost its charm to a great extent. After knowing that they are bringing a mouse keyboard combo for the PC version of Fifa 09, I decided not to even bother buying the game.

But I am waiting for Sims 3 and Street Fighter 4 PC version.I didn't really enjoy Sims 1 much. I installed it, played for a few hours, and got one of the lady Sims burnt and dead. Since then I stopped playing it. After almost a year of Sims 2's release, I got in to the game, and since then I've been playing it continually. Currently I have Sims 2 installed with university, night life, open for business, summer stuff pack and freetime expansion. I am really looking forward to Sims 3, as it is promising a free flowing environment, improved visuals and new gameplay elements.

I have a decent, if not great gaming PC. I got a Core II Duo 2,0 Ghz processor with 2 gig ram and a Nvidia 8600 GT graphics card with 256 MB vram. I am hopeful of running sims 3 with atleast medium details. Let's see how it comes out to be.

I will write about SF IV in the next post.

Okay, the second impression is quite different from the first one.The game started with a lot of promise; offering new and challenging gameplay elements. However, after the first two stages, the game reverted back to being a traditional strategy game, with some resemblance to Sims. You can call it a poor man's Sims 2. The only interesting part is designing buildings and vehicles. But once you've designed them, it's a traditional RTS setting. I am definitely dissapointed with the way the game is proceeding.

I installed Spore day before yesterday, and sat down to play the game for the first time at around 12 PM yesterday. Yesterday was a holiday, and I had all the time in my hand to play. However, I didn't think that I'd spend straight 3 hours with the game.

    *Spoilers*

I watched my little single celled creature growing up to a two legged; almost human like figure. It was a fun and entertaining experience, but in the current stage, it looks more like a traditional RTS than something innovative. THe first two stages were really unique, but the third one is a bit traditional.

A few bugs marred the gaming experience. I might right a full review after I've spent some more time with the game. But I am finding it very interesting, and this might become a great franchise like Sims. I am sure the guys are already working on expansion concepts.

After a long, long time I see innovation in the gaming scape, and it's sad that Gamespot only gave it 8.

Emulation, just like piracy, is probably a very debated topic. However, I think it's a great thing. I don't need an arcade cabinet or a console to play my childhood favorites like Street Fighter II, Captain Commando, Final Fight, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and countless other great games. I don't have to install anything, I don't need a disk, I don't need to stop working--a window is what I need to keep on switching betwen games and other stuff like IM and browsing.

Emulators provide a simple yet a very satisfying gaming experience. Long live emulation!

I just installed COD 4 couple of days ago, and played through the tutorial and the first mission. "SPOILERS" ahead--as soon as the first mission unveiled I was damn impressed. I was playing as a SAS operative, sent to a secret mission on a Ship. I was dropped off on it from a chopper. It was raining heavily, and the rain animation is brilliantly done. I think it's even better than Crysis. Crysis is a futuristic game, whereas in COD4, everything looks authentic and real. The ending was dramatic, where I had to run out of the exploding ship, which was tough, but not too tough. The long cinematic that introduced me to the second mission was breathtakingly beautiful. I was seeing things through the eyes of a captive in a middle eastern setup. Two rough looking Arab guys were escorting me via a jeep through some sandy and dusty Arab landscape. It was soo brilliantly pictured that it's not at all a crime to mistake it with a movie. Suddenly the cell phone started ringing, and the guy sitting beside the driver picked it up and started talking in hoarse Arabic language. In the background, shouts of the rebel leader was reverbing all the time. He was talking about overthrowing the govt. and freeing his people. The cell phone looked like a Nokia model. Later on, I was dragged towards the leader, and one of his generals shot me in the head!

This was how the legal president got assassinated. A SAS informed is trapped inside that boiling hell. My next mission is to be part of a rescue team that will bring the informer out from the grasps of the Arabs.

Sounds interesting, right? It looks a lot better than what I've just described--if you have a good configuration PC and you are not totally against FPS games then not having this game is a crime.

Yeah, it's a problem. I have Crysis and Half Life Episode 2 installed, but I can't play them. No, I do have a good rig to play the games, but for some reason, there's this anti-FPS mode that has been activated in my mind for quite some time. I don't seem to play FPS games for prolonged periods, at all.

    Very, very weird!

I really ldidn't play Aoe 3 when it came out first, because I didn't quite like the idea of an AOE game with riflemen and cannons. However, now that the Asian Dynasties expansion is out, I am playing the game like crazy. I already finished the campaign and now I am playing 5 skirmish games on medium difficulty almost everyday.

Japan is by far my most favorite faction. The samurais are too cool!

We significantly changed our Scourge lineup for the final match. This was done in order to stop our opponent from harrassing us. Here's the lineup:

    Magnus
    Lycanthrope
    Tidehunter
    Razor
    Medusa

For the first time in the tournament, I took a melee hero (Lycan). I did play two practice games with Lycan, but I was damn nervous. Our opponents were the strongest team, and they had a smart counter strategy planned. But, our new lineup surprised them, and we managed to take the game to 80 minutes. We lost, though. I played really well and got the highest kills for my team. However, it didn't matter a bit as we lost the match.

We didn't change our sentinel lineup much. Enchantress was selected instead of Beastmaster. I was Zeus, and the others were Earthshaker, Naga Siren and Drow Ranger. I played somewhat well during the first half, but I was totally invalid in the latter part of the game. I died like anything, and managed to get only 8 kills. Enchantress survived battles, but couldn't do anything to the opponents. Naga played brilliantly, and he almost single handedly won the match for us.

Unfortunately, we lost 2 games, and became the runners up.

It's all well and good; I never dreamt of reaching the finals.

We won the Semifinal match way too easily. We kinda thwarted the team
from Bass gaming zone, one of the four "foreign" teams competing in our
friendly neighbourhood DOTA tournament. Scourge is our stronger team,
but we buthered them with our Sentinel team this team. Let me tell you
    about our teams:

    Sentinel:

    Naga Siren

    Zeus (Me)

    Rexxarr the beastmaster

    Earthshaker

    Traxxex the drowranger

    Scourge:

    Sand King

    Lich (me)

    Akasha (Queen of pain)

    Leviathan

    Razor

We finished the game in about 40 minutes. After that, the scourge match was even easier.

Now we are waiting to play the final, where we'll meet the toughest team; the local champions.

Ironically, one member of that team was originally supposed to play
with us. To add more to the irony, he's the most versatile player in
    their team.

    Finally, he's my cousin

Me and my friends sometimes go to VCEL gaming zone in our area. There we play DOTA, a very popular mod for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. This is perhaps the only game that I play on a regular basis nowadays.

The gaming zone hosted a tournament. We decided to enter the tournament just for the sake of having some fun. We didn't even haev a full 5 member team, and one of our members left to stand in for a sick player in another team. However, we got a replacement, and guess what....we won 3 matches out of 4! We got walkover for 2 other mathces, and now we're in the semis.

I'm so excited! This is my 2nd competitive gaming tournament, and I am really looking forward to the semi next week.

However, it is most likely that it'll be our last game in the tournament.

I wonder why people play these splinter cell and rainbow six games....they are plainly boring.

In fact, most shooting games are boring nowadays.

Yeah, I'm on the verge of retiring. I don't find much interest in games nowadays. The only game I play somewhat regularly is DOTA, which is a mod for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. There's this multiplay pub near to my house where I go with my pals and indulge in 5 on 5 intense competitions.

At home, I don't have any games installed right now, which is very unlikely of me. However, I've bout this new Sound Blaster Extreme X-Fi sound card, which is rocking my mp3s. I am spending more and more time listening to songs.

    Life isn't that bad.
