Hey. It's Febuary and I'm pretty late on this. But I just thought f*ck it, I'm late to the party. This is the last and only list of 2012 I am doing. I thought about doing this one for a long time, and by the time I thought about it, it was already the third day of febuary, so I decided to finish this now. This year was a very interesting year for music. Music went from mature to crappy immediately in the year of 2012. Surprisingly, there were a lot of songs I loved this year. I'm more of a classic rock lover, but dang, modern rock and indie pop kicked ass this year. So this is my top ten list of the best songs of 2012. By the way, Happy Super Bowl Sunday.
10. Locked out of Heaven by Bruno Mars
Now, I'm not a fan of Bruno Mars. In fact, I'm not a fan of pop music in general. It's generic, tasteless, and boring. But sometimes, the artists you really hate can surpirse you and Bruno Mars has finally surprised me. Now this isn't anything I would put on my IPod, but this is still a fun track to listen to on the radio. This song is written really well and Bruno Mars sings it with power and makes you just want to like him until he releases another crappy single. Hey Bruno, thanks for making me respect you. Now please make songs like this. Thanks pal.
9. It's Time by Imagine Dragons
This year, Indie Rock fought like a champ. We had people like Fun., The Lumineers, this band, etc walk in and kick popular pop music in the balls. This song is great. It definitely isn't as good as the other songs on this list but god dang is it one heck of a tune. It's sung so well and it's written greatly too. Indie Rock, I hope you take your reign like you did last year. Good Luck.
8. Grown Up by Danny Brown
Okay, let me put this out here. I hate rap. Rap was awesome back then but now it's just covered with a bunch of posers who brag about how great their life of a rapper is. The only hip hop I listen to is Gorrilaz. I hear an indie rap group called Das Racist was good but I never listen to them. All of my friends said this is one of those rappers that is actually good. And when I listened to Danny Brown for the first time, it was the first time since the Gorrilaz I heard hip hop/rap that was actually amazing. Danny Brown is one of those artists who actually care about the music they are sining. You have to listen to this song. Danny Brown perfectly raps about how insane his childhood was in just 2:20. Danny Brown has a great career ahead of him, hopefully people actually listen to him.
7. Some Nights by Fun.
Fun. You have probably heard of them. And most of you probably know them from that overrated and boring song We are Young. Now, We Are Young isn't a bad song, but it definitely isn't their best. I can say it's their worst. But Some Nights, while also not the best Fun song, is still great. This song is amazing. Fun I am so glad people are listening to. Some Nights is one of those songs that takes a lot of risks and those risks pay off. Hell, this song's solo is a f**king autotune solo. And it is actually not terrible. It takes some getting used to, but it is way better used. This song is hard to figure out, but god dang Some Nights is awesome.
6. Somebody I Used to Know by Gotye
Wow. This song shocked me. It is one of the damn best break up songs I have ever heard. Modern pop musicians try to do break up songs but fail terribly, take lessons from Gotye. This song grew on me and got better every time I listened to it. Kimbra's verse is amazing. We first thing that just Gotye is sining this song about this girl, but Kimbra from out of god dang nowhere starts to sing and gives him literally a lyrical punch to the balls. This song is amazing. It is one of my favorite break up songs of all time and is definitely one of the best pop songs of 2012. Go Gotye. You to Kimbra.
5. Carry On by Fun.
Fun. is one of the biggest surprises ever. Carry On is also the best song on the Some Nights album. What a great song. Now this album Some Nights isn't as good as their first album Aim and Ignite(Strongly recommend that album), but this album got better after We Are Young ended. Some Nights I wish got placed somewhere else in the album but I understand why it's the second song that plays. The guitar solo for Carry On is amazing. It's another really well written song and is sung really well too. Fun, please continue to make awesome songs. Thanks.
4. Submarines and Ho Hey by The Lumineers
Number four is a tie between two songs by The Lumineers. This is another great band. They are so likeable and they are extremely talented. I was originally going to put Ho Hey on the number nine spot because I prefer Submarines over Ho Hey but I just decided to tie them up. God dang The Lumineers are good. This is one the best folk bands I have personally ever heard. They are talented and these two songs are written very well also. The whole group sings beautifully and they can play those guitars well. Good Luck Lumineers.
3. Madness by Muse
Now we move on to my favorite music category ever, rock. Muse is extremely underrated. Everyone who doesn't listen to rock knows them as the Knights of Cydonia guys. But they are so talented. I was fighting to put either Madness or Supermacy on the list but I prefered Madness. Madness is in my opinion kind of an experimental song. Their is this very interesting bass they use. The song is very calm, sweet and soothing. If you are ever in that angry mood, you should listen to Madness. It's a very well done song. Muse is a very good rock band and I strongly recommend them.
2. Love Interruption by Jack White
Jack White is one of the most talented modern rockers today. He has two bands, The Raeconteurs and The Dead Weather and he was part of one of my favorite rockbands of all time The White Stripes. The White Stripes are my second favorite rock band of all time, right behind The Smiths(my favorite rockband of all time). Jack White is such a talent and he has such a dedication to the genre of rock. He also perfectly combines blues music in many of his songs. And this song is very blues-rock. And it was definitely so close to being the number one song of this year if wasn't for the return of one of my favorite anti folk artists of all time. Jack White did such a great job. This song is the best song in his album. Jack White, I salute you. I will miss The White Stripes very much, but I think your career is still going amazing.
and my number 1 song of 2012 is.
1. Small Town Moon by Regina Spektor
I love me some Regina Spektor. Originally, Love Interruption was my favorite song of 2012. It just was so amazing. Jack White is a great artist and I love him and all of his bands, but when What We Saw From the Cheap Seats came out, the first track blew me away. I kept listening to it, and it became my favorite song of 2012. It is just written so WELL OH MAN! This song first starts as a typical Spektor song, but she then kicks it up a notch and shows everyone why Regina Spektor is one of the best indie folk artists of all time. I love this album so much. What We Saw from the Cheap Seats is also my favorite album of 2012. Such a great album. I love you Regina and I love this album and this song. So good.
And that concludes my favorite songs of 2012. Now I must add, my only honorable mention is Skyfall by Adele. That song is the theme for Skyfall, the James Bond film. It is an amazing song and one of the best Bond themes ever. Definitely deserved that Oscar nomination, hope it wins. Also, my other list of films I am avoiding like the plague I will make eventually. So until then, peace off and enjoy life. Happy Super Bowl Sunday.
