My Friends

3Jan 09

My last blog post was about movies and the ones that I recommend. Now I'll post the games I like for most and which one I'll try to finish in 2009.

I love gaming, particularly on PC. I also played a lot Atari 2600, Arcade, Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Mega Drive, and then my console days ended. Naturally most of my free time goes to the PC. As you may have already noticed, my favorite genre is First-Person Shooter (must be fast-paced). The games listed below aren't in order of preference.

69. Condemned: Criminal Origins (2006, pending)

70. XIII (2003, pending)

71. Chaser (2003, pending)

Unreal II is listed above just because it's a sequel to an amazing game. But the game isn't all that good on its own merit. The same rule is applied to Unreal Tournament 3 and Painkiller: Overdose.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter still is the top game of my favs list, considering it's the only one I could give a resounding score of '10'. This game is simply awesome!

Hey, Cunhao, indeed Painkiller: Overdose starts really bad (horrible first impression), but becomes interesting throughout the game. It isn't nearly as good as the original and its expansion, but it still is a good old-school shooter. I retire what I said about this one before.

I was looking into the Painkiller box set, is it worth it?? As for Sid Meier's Pirates, I wanted to love it and couldn't...

    Heya Christian!

Quite a list you got there. Some of them came a surprise to me (Duke and Hexen hovering in the thirties and Half Life 92?!?). It seems that the Quake, Unreal and Doom series are the uber games for ya!

I too love Unreal - I reckon Unreal 2004 is the best of best FPS ever! It has everything one can ask for!

I really don't have a favourite genre however what I tend to gravitate towards are huge games, great stories, the bizaare and doesn't end because it ends so it really doesn't make any difference of what genre.

So here are the games I have rated 9 and above (and note 8 and above are the games I reckon is a must play nevertheless).

    BioShock 9.5
    Unreal Tournament 2004 9.5
    Star Raiders 9.5
The Operative: No One Lives Forever 9.4
    Unreal Tournament 9.4
    Unreal 9.3
    Half-Life 9.0
    Spy vs. Spy 9.0
    The Longest Journey 9.0
    Diablo 9.0
    Hotel Dusk: Room 215 9.0
    Doom 9.0

    Hey, T Dub!

The original Painkiller is one of the best FPSes I ever played. The first expansion (Battle out of Hell) isn't bad, but it's somehow more sporadic and the design of some levels is simply horrible. Painkiller Overdose has a terrible atmosphere, but the shooting sequences are definitely worth. If you enjoyed DOOM, you'll love Painkiller and its old-school action. I also wrote two reviews; check them out if you're interested.

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/painkiller/player_review.html?id=530230&tag=contributions;review24

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/painkillerexpansionpackbattleoutofhell/player_review.html?id=597105&tag=contributions;review17

Or if you want more info about these titles (spoiler-related or everything else), let me know. My complain about Painkiller: Overdose is that you're always making you way through dread and demonic regions, with that red fog all over the place. The scenario is so boring that made me stop playing at the first moment, but if you forget this uninspired level design, you'll find yourself playing a nice old-school action game (while Croteam doesn't bring Serious Sam III, Painkiller: Overdose seems enough for now).

    Hey, Azghouls!

In truth, the order I listed the games above has nothing to do with my appeal to them. It's my fault, I know. =) I just started with the first games in my collection; I mean the way I organized them here in my old box, that's all. I'll add a quick note about that (no way UT3 to be in my top 10 games).

But you're right about this: I'm a big fan of Duke Nukem 3D. I also loved the original Quake and its expansions (although the sequels are all great too, especially Quake II). Unreal is as good as Quake, except to the fact that Epic Games tried to make something more fantastic and with better graphics. Their best title is, naturally, UT2004.

I agree with most games you listed (while others I didn't play yet), and I'm particularly interested in Bioshock. I think I can run this game with low quality, so I'll check it as sooner as I can. I remember that you played System Shock... what do you say? Is Bioshock any better? Those bugs related in the GameSpot review are still in there, even with the patched version?

I tried to play The Longest Journey, but I easily get bored with adventure games. I love a good and intelligent story, but not while gaming. About that I prefer to watch some movies. =) I also liked Syberia, but I had the same problem as with The Longest Journey. The same goes with Broken Sword series.

    Heya Christian,

I only played a small portion of SS2 therefore I really couldn't comment on it yet however to what I have done is glorious!

What GS stated about the bugs in Bioshock is nothing but nic-picking. There are no bugs to ruin the game play yet the latest patch corrected that 'widescreen' issue and new plasmids (spell casting thingies). I was truly amazed with Bioshock and if you can manage to play this in DX 10 you're in for a treat.

And the pain, the pain to hear about you and adventure games! Nevermind - I adore the Longest Journey and so looking forward to play the sequel Dreamfall.

    Keep gaming mate!

Don't forget the classic: Day Of The Tentacle! Now that was a lot of fun on the PC. also must say that UT2K4 will always have a special spot in my heart. Great list!

Hehehe Yeah.. you said that. Ok then, I`ll take it. But if Overdose is worse than Battle Out of Hell, I don´t know if I´ll have the patience to finish it.

    Hey Azghouls!

Yes, a shame about me and the adventures, isn't? =) I think the only adventure game I would try (again) is Alone in the Dark (the original trilogy). This time I'll finish it!

What do you think about Myst? I enjoyed RealMyst (the 3D remake) and its nice puzzles, although I didn't try too much the other ones. I also found Uru Chronicles a cool package for puzzle solvers. That's an adventure game that would make me stop playing all my other games, for sure. The problem is: I'm a bit lazy to search for the entire collection.

Thanks for the info about Bioshock. I think I can run this game with a decent FPS, but no DX10 for me. I rather prefer to use Linux + Cedega than using Vista, but this is just my humble opinion. =)

    Hey, Nappan!

Yes! I remember Day of the Tentacle. I also loved Full Throttle (Azghouls, I think it isn't all lost for me about adventure games, after all).

I always go back to UT2004, no matter what. I know I'm addicted to Left 4 Dead right now, but I'm completely sure that I'll re-install UT2004 pretty soon.

    Hey, Cunhao!

That's my problem too, man. I started playing it and suddenly stopped. That's a game you must install on your H.D. and play it uninterruptedly until it's finished (I mean, no other in-between games). Where's *****ng Serious Sam 3, by the way? =) I don't need another vaporware like Duke Nukem Forever.

Ok - here comes the shock horror...

I never played Myst or Day of the Tentacle. Way back then my first PC was on Windows 95 and for the life of me I cannot run either games (I reckon it was me being a noob than anything else). I even couldn't run DOS if my life depended on it.

Naturally today is a different story. I will give those two a go as Myst is apparently one of the biggest selling game on the PC and Day of the Tentacle just looks too cool. I only played the first Alone in the Dark and reviewed it (gave it an 8.5) and seriously that game totally rocks! I loved every bit of it!

I'm still need to keep up my promise of playing those recommended games on my previous blog however Sacred 2 is sucking me in like a leech. I'm totally amazed with that game and it's the side quests that makes this game very cool indeed. Just recently Ascaron released yet another patch but added a great sidequest called Xmas Island and boy that was worth the download. Check out my pic and see the Dyrad decked out in Xmas gear.

Sadly my horse died on that island - done a massive leap (using the art) and landed on a Yeti. Of course the Yeti wasn't impressed with this feat...

And do I see your banner changed? Getting ready for Diablo III I see...

  • ChristianKiss

    Posted Jan 6, 2009 10:30 pm PT

Today we have DOSBox! No more RAM problems and all those unsolvable MS-DOS puzzles.

Yes, indeed Myst sold millions of copies (at least the first one). All the sequels seem nice too, but I didn't try them a lot. Alone in the Dark, considering I'm a big horror fan, appeals more to me. I also played Penumbra, but I enjoyed more the physics than the horror itself in that game. =)

Yes, I remember how much time I spend playing the first Sacred. That screenshot looks great, by the way. I'm happy to see that Ascaron didn't change too much from the original. The interface looks very similar to the previous one, which is a good thing.

Good news! I knew that Ascaron would fix the game, as they did with Sacred and Underworld. LOL, I laughed about the Yeti thing! With so many places to land... =) This game looks more and more promising to me. The only thing I complain: is it true that they included high-tech weapons and a playable cyborg character (please, correct me if I'm wrong)? OK, I could play as a Terminator, but never in Ancaria!

My last banner (King of Dragons) was stored at ImageShack, and they kindly deleted the file without any reason! =) Or, more likely, it's a horrible bug. So I decided to change my banner for 2009, uploading part of the desolated Tristam. That was more a tribute to the first Diablo, the best Action RPG out there. But certainly I'm preparing myself to Diablo III (I'm pretty sure I spotted an area called Leoric Highlands in that gameplay video; awesome!).

  • Azghouls

    Posted Jan 7, 2009 12:58 am PT

Ahhh, those high tech weapons and that cyborg dude. Yeah it is true but oddly enough fits well. I have to admit at first glance it was kinda off-putting but once you start to understand the story it fits well.

Only the cyborg dude can use these weapons (temple guardian) however my character, the Dryad opposes all things unnatural. There's this thing called T-Energy that flows throughtout Ancaria that can be for the good or bad as this is a source of immense power. My dryad thinks it's overrated and will cause damage to her if going near it.

The big Elven towns have T-Energy flowing through pipes (as the high elves loves this stuff) but I'm not sure what the other race's towns looks like yet. I know far north there's a human settlement and far south my homeland but that's about it. I'll let you know how these towns pan out.

My first character was actually the Temple Guardian however as mentioned before, I really couldn't get my head around this high tech stuff and ditched him pretty much straight away. My second choice was the high elf but then I saw the Dryad. I wanted to play some kind of thief/long range/assassian type of character (as I rarely play them) hence the dryad grabbed my attention. She's a voodoo/witchdoctor/archer type that uses blowguns (poisoned ones of course) and casts spells that has diseases, poisons and anything else natural - a hippy chick!

He he heeey! Nice one Chriss. Also try Half-Life 2 and Episodes. And DEAD SPACE! It's so awesome. Keep up the good work buddy. And a Happy New Year!

  • ChristianKiss

    Posted Jan 8, 2009 11:15 am PT

Thanks for the nice explanation about the Ancaria world. The cyborg thing seems more logical now, although it's still bizarre! =) At least Ascaron tried to do something different, instead of just developing another cliched fantasy game. Considering what you said, one thing drew my attention: Sacred 2 seems to bring a lot of different towns from the various races present in the world, while the original had only human villages. I can't imagine how many pixels Ascaron used to make such a huge world. Actually, that is something I'm always looking in games: longevity. You convinced me! =) I'll take a look in this game.

Hey Sorvos, Thanks! Long time no see, man. Hope you're still gaming (or, even better, retrogaming)! =) Senor T Dub also recommended Dead Space, but I'm still in doubt about that 3rd Person view. Half-Life 2... yes. For some unknown reason I didn't buy the Orange Box yet. I think I'll wait for Episode Three and buy a set with the first HL2 and the three expansions.

    Happy New Year!

-UPDATE: I'll remove some games in the list. And I know there're a lot of great games I didn't mentioned above (Sacred, Titan Quest, Divine Divinity, Warhammer 40K etc.); however I can't list them all, otherwise the list would become huge (it's quite large already). =) I'll add Wheel of Time as well, a nice game which I played years ago and never finished.

That is quite a list you got there, I am impressed. I like your taste of games as well, while some old-school gaming like Doom and Wolfenstein are my favorites of all time I promote Painkiller to be one of the funnest game for it's awesome gameplay. Oldschool and PC gaming will never be forgotten.

  • ChristianKiss

    Posted Jan 12, 2009 8:19 am PT

Hey Sardinar! Another fellow retrogamer in GameSpot. Nice!

It's great to talk to someone that shares a similar taste as mine. I'm always recommending Painkiller to everyone, but people don't believe that it's a good game. Even I wasn't impressed with the screenshots before adding this game to my collection. After playing it, I felt the power! Painkiller totally rocks!

"Oldschool and PC gaming will never be forgotten." I hope not. However the absence of a sequel to Serious Sam II is something to worry about. There aren't too many old-school games to be released. Duke Nukem Forever is vaporware... again. There is no sequel to Painkiller: Overdose, Quake 4, HeXen II (which I would love if Raven Soft brings another one), Heretic II etc.

However, I'm happy that John Carmack said that DOOM 4 will be more action than horror, pretty much like DOOM II: Hell on Earth. Sadly I think it will be released only in 2010 or 2011, since id Software will release Rage first. Anyway we can always rely on John Carmack's crew. =)

    Posted Jan 18, 2009 10:56 am PT

Just finished Heretic II. It was easy at the regular difficulty level, but very entertaining. I'll upload some images and videos soon, and then write a review. Naturally, I'll not update the post above and put Heretic II as a finished game, since it says what are the titles I'll try finish in 2009 (the ones with "pending" status). So I'll keep posting comments here to list the games I'm fishing throughout this year. Heretic II was the first! =)

The next one will be Painkiller: Overdose.

  • Azghouls

    Posted Jan 18, 2009 9:51 pm PT

    Heya Christian,

Wasn't Heretic II a great game! The Quake II engine pulling off that 3D stuff really worked well. And I quite like that bow he had and the many ammo types. Hmmm...might play that soon.

  • ChristianKiss

    Posted Jan 19, 2009 7:41 am PT

    Hey, Azghouls!

Heretic II is great. The puzzles are much more logical than the ones in HeXen II, although I took my time in some of those places that you must find a switch or a hidden door. I found the main character and most of the enemies a bit thin, but they really aren't bad designed. IMO, the best thing in Heretic II is the places you visit: swamps, mountains, dungeons etc. A beautiful scenario like that isn't commonly seen in games (even if rendered by the obsolete id Tech 2).

I didn't start the review yet, however I think that a proper score for this game is something around '8.0'.

  • ChristianKiss

    Posted Jan 25, 2009 1:26 pm PT

Painkiller: Overdose is finished! Cool old-school shooter, but technically flawed. Horrible long loading times, bad performance and some annoying enemies. My score for this game will be something around 6.0.

Now I'll play Diablo II again and try to finish 'Hell' in Single Player. No Battle.net this time! =)

Then I'll copy my backup of my Sorceror from the first Diablo and play Hellfire until 'Hell' is beaten (again). I managed to finish 'Nightmare' without problems with the Monk, but I got bored playing with him, since I really prefer the Sorceror in that game. So I stopped with my Monk before finishing the last difficulty level.
