Apparently, we gamers like to talk a good game about original IP's and the indie revolution, but...

- Of the Elite Eight, there are two non-sequels. Neither has yet mustered 30% of the total vote.

- One is a budget 2D side-scroller.

- One is a face-lifted (and to be fair, very well reviewed) rehash of a classic series.

- The remaining IP's have twenty games to their credit. Forza and Assassin's Creed combine for half that total.

- There were ten PC exclusives out of sixty four games. Four made it to round 2. Two made it to the Sweet 16.

- Both were free-to-play shooters.

- Only two non-North American games made it out of round 2. One is Japanese, the other is from western Europe.

- Nine games have "2" or "II" directly in their titles, six have "3" or "III", three have "4" and there is one "V".

- The one with "V" in the title is an expansion/sequel to another game with "V" in the title.

- The second highest achieving "indie" game was bounced from the Sweet 16 by more than 90% of the vote.

- The highest achieving "indie" game was published by Microsoft.

- Only two, original IP "indies" made it out of the intial round.

There you go. No axes being ground, just pure observation.

Make of it what you will and Merry Christmas.

*Wha?*   GAH!!

Don't sneak up me like that!

Good to see you're still alive.  To demur is to show reluctance, so it seems like an efficient word for the context.

Yeah, I preordered FarCry 3 and have yet to even pick it up.  There it sits.  Waiting.  There has to a creative revolution of some sort, at some point, because we're going in circles with whatever we read or play or watch.

I probably (and by probably, I mean certainly) play too damned many of these things, so the impact is lessened.  Time for holodecks, if yeh ask me.

@BravoOneActual I tend to just resurrect myself from time to time. But never around Easter. That would be awkward.

Well, for myself...I am sort of demur about going into a game store anymore with any sort of anticipation because of the "2, II, III IIIIIIIII, VIXIX223324," sequels. Same with going to the movies with re-makes and comic book movies. Meh.

That and I'm broke. Broke is probably a bigger deal.

I really don't know why I used a word like "demur."

What? Do you not want to play Confusion of Doody Bungled Flops? Or is Assasinine Crud XXVII too obtuse a concept? I'm so tired of you elitist gamerz. Ur n00bz. fTw 69

@kaolcxlaf Even that jest gives me an ice cream headache.  It's too close to what I actually get 90% of the time.  I frequent the news comment sections way too often... which is to say at all.

Well, "fan-voting" means that fanboys (and girls) will dominate the process.

It's indicative of the high level of interest (read potential sales), and the reason AAA publishers will continue to produce iterative franchise sequels. :|

Merry [insert_celebration_here].

@s_h_a_d_o Well, marketing rules and in spite of our attempts to appear as true aficionados, apparently so do name brands.  We like our Manchester United.  We like our Yankees.  We like our Lakers.  We like our Tiger Woods.  (We not necessarily being me... or you, but you get the point).  I guess if there is a point here it's that even in a fastidious, thoughtful and intellectually diverse (read: educated gamer nerd) crowd, that herd mentality still prevails and marketing bucks lead the way.

Ha! "[insert_celebration]"...  It's so complex to be a Jesus-loving Republican these days, albeit a Gen-X version.  Respect, fellowship and love to all, I suppose.  Thanks for chiming in.

"Indie" games don't really exist anymore. Not when they are funded by Sony and Microsoft. Anyway, I'm fine with the fan voting. I guess. Merry Christmas.
