  iPhone 3G get

  Picked up a 16GB iPhone 3G during my lunch break today. I'm mostly just getting used to it and will be spending a goodly amount of time configuring this thing. So far I'd have to say my experience is negative.

  1. I tried to port my 510 area code number from Verizon at the Apple Store. The activation application would not allow me to list my current address and port an area code outside the billing address I provided. So I told the Apple Store clerk fine, I'm going to lie and submit my old address as the billing address for now, and call AT&T later to work out the address switch. Doing this allowed me to port my 510 phone number but it was a tremendous hassle.

  2. I get 0-1 bars in the office. I expected this going in, but it's still kinda suck. I'm a little scared about what kind of (lack) of service I'll get at home.

  3. You can't download or configure anything over the air. Tried to set up Gmail with the mailbox -- couldn't find imap server (and we KNOW the gmail imap server isn't down). Tried to buy hold'em poker game, said I needed wifi b/c the app was over 10MB. Tried to download free Facebook app from the app store, it said I needed to connect to iTunes first. Loaded up iTunes store, said I needed to be on a wifi connection.

  For something that's touted as a go-anywhere, do anything device, my initial impressions are that this thing is a steaming pile of sh1t. I'll probably feel better about it tomorrow once I'm able to go home and connect to wifi to sort things out. Or maybe not.

  Shoulda waited for HTC Touch Diamond?

  More misadventures in game "journalism"

  I use the finger "quotes" because the vast, vast majority of writers in this industry are not journalists (I include my former self) and should never be confused with journalists. Check out this awesome one:

  Start with sensationalist headline. Throw in a dash of quoting-a-3-month-old-interview and trying-to-pass-it-off-as-new. Add a teaspoon of not-linking-to-the-original-source. And end it with a pinch of hearing-what-you-want-to-hear-and-not-what-was-actually-said. And my friends, you have baked yourself a giant serving of epic fail. The fact that this was done on an enthusiast blog and also linked to from another enthusiast blog relating to said game may bring this to the level of legendary fail, given that enthusiasts probably should have recognized that the interview was old info. Hooray for today's industry opinion leaders!
