    Really oldschool fighting games

Recently I decided to show my little cousin what the past of fighters looked like. He is all too used to SSF4 and its polished graphics and thinks anything under that standard immediately fails. So i decided to download a handful of really oldschool stuff to show him how it used to be. I purchased Mortal Kombat 2, Bloody Roar 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, King of Fighters 99, among other much older titles. At first he responded with the expected "ewwe, it looks blurry and pixelated" but after a few rounds and showing him the ropes, he seemed more open to the idea that gameplay is better than visual art. Even Mortal Kombat 2, with its lackluster roster of fighters and admittedly subpar graphics eventually grew on him, and soon, I had other family members waiting in line to take a turn at me

2 new games to drool over!!!

Purchased the new Need for Speed and Vanquish last night. Played a good bit of both. Vanquish didn't let me down, having heard such praise from Brendan and Tom. The game moves at a suprisingly fast pace and the first boss battle left me wanting to scream a bit . The "sliding" system is as fun as i've heard it was supposed to be and the gunplay is fantastic. The game does punish you a bit however if you are used to games letting you expend ammo just to receive more. I found myself on more than one occassion scrambling around the battlefield searching for ammo, just to curse myself for being so triggerhappy when none was to be found.

Need for Speed also made me giggle, as being a cop, fueled by the need to kill, driving a Lambo, is just plain fun. The driving feels semi-realistic, much like previous installments in the series, and the Burnout influence is quite apparent. Being able to simply wreck your opponents instead of having to outdrive them is something that I giggle at every time. The wrecks themselves are also quite entertaining. The main complaint I have with the game is that EA doesn't allow you to skip ANYTHING!!! You are forced to watch everything from the intro to the cutscenes to the newly installed "update" which forces you to sit through an add for the upcoming Shift 2, before you are even allowed to access the game for the first time. Also, the game's extreme focus on facebook posting and other blog-based sites annoys me to no end. I didn't buy the game so my friends could check out pics of my car or so that I could facebook post on my opponent's site or any of that jazz. I simply wanted a competent racer where I could wreck stuff and go fast. This rant wouldn't be important, except that again, you cannt skip the Facebook stuff. The game forces you to sit through a 5-7 minute explanation of how their facebook system works, and in fact, blog-related options are at least 3-4 sections of the entire main menu. It makes in-game advertising in other games seem like a petty afterthought.

But all in all, I am headed back inside to enjoy more heart-pounding moments. Cheers!
