I find it funny that people are in an uproar over GS' review of the Last of Us.  An 8.0 is a very good score and, despite what you may think of Tom McShea, I felt he gave an honest, trite assessment.  Would you have preferred Tom McShea had handed down a 7.0?  Or a 6.0 instead?  I'm sorry, but get over it.   It's only a number.  Opinions are based on personal experiences and shouldn't be representative of the integrity of the overall final product.  You the consumer determine whether or not it was worth the time and money.

I can recall when most people got upset over Bioshock Infinite's 9.0 score, which many had felt deserved a 10.0.

It's troubling to see people get so worked up over a few numbers.  Numbers can't do anything.  A game's worth is determined by individual experiences and what a gamer gets out of it overall.  If they themselves found the game enjoyable and fun, then a number score can do little, if anything, to diminish that.  It should be noted that the Last of Us is, thus far, receiving universal acclaim from many major publications anyhow.  It already won well over 25 or so awards, including best PlayStation exclusive game of E3.

The Last of Us will be released on Friday, June 14th.  Draw your own conclusions, have fun, and be careful out there.

I laugh at the retardness of the people here on GameSpot.

"WHAT?  That son of a bitch gave a game.....that I haven't played yet and hasn't been released yet......an EIGHT out of TEN?"  [insert random curse words] this website."

Funny.  Uncharted 1 got an 8.0 as a new IP and I enjoyed it more than 2 and 3.  Plus the review was spot-on with the problems lingering it.  I don't get it.  I have a LOT of games under 9.0 that were awesome.  Hell, Resident Evil: Revelations got a 6.5 on the consoles and that's not gonna stop me from getting it.  Then again, the reasons why this community hates the console versions are anything short of retarded (i.e: backtracking).

I don't care if The Last Of Us got an 8 or not.  It was on my radar since last E3 and I will play it for myself.  I will suck hardcore at it if I have to, but in the end,  I will try to have fun.

P.S: I guarantee you that if a Nintendo exclusive gets a better score than The Last Of Us, this community will bring their pitchforks.

The review came out already? Are you serious? O_O Why does everyone get the game before me? HOW COME I CAN'T GET A GAME BEFORE RELEASE DATE. The score on the other hand I don't really care. I'm going to enjoy that game.

If a score of 8 is defined as "great" then it should be a good game.  But I think over the years game reviews became overinflated so people started thinking anything less than a 9 or a 10 wasn't worth playing.

You're right. A critic's job is indeed a hard one, but critics have no superpower whatsoever. They are ordinary people. They have different tastes, they get different feelings from experiences, etc. :)

It's the nature of things these days. People don't want and can't handle contrasting viewpoints or news they don't like. They only want to get told what they want to hear and have their own opinions validated. If they don't get that, they shoot the messenger, throw him off a cliff, run him over with a truck, then shoot him again to make sure he's dead. In the gaming community it's a peculiar thing though, latching onto a game to the point where some people become fanboys of it before it's even released.

I've seen at least one reviewer at another site admit that there have been times where he scored games higher than he wanted because he was afraid of gamer backlash, so that's a bit of irony for you -- gamers accuse lower scores of being dishonest, but maybe the higher ones are too.

@kfjl It really is unfortunate when, in this day and age, critics can't even give an honest opinion on a game (or anything else for that matter) without feeling the wrath of dedicated fans.   On that note, I emphasize with Tom McShea.  People here at GS seem to hate him for being honest.  Or, in the words of his dossier, being the "jerk who likes what everybody else hates, and hates what everybody else likes."

On that note, the 8.0 for Last of Us is a good score that I personally agree with.  It's an honest assessment.  I would much rather hear that than blind praise.

I have to admit, I think it is funny - most people haven't touched the game, how can they know if it is good or not.  Silliness, pure silliness!

@pokecharm Well, you know GS and its community XD  People are already writing petitions demanding a review do-over; perhaps a second opinion from another reviewer.  It's funny how there's so much hatred for Tom McShea.  I have to admire his courage.

But Giving a low score to a game may cause people don't try It usually, Like Hitman Absolution that Got 7.5 but It was awesome game at least 8.5...I watched Last of Us review It was only about 3 minutes that guy was just talking about negative points of that game! skipping other stuff! and shorten! It was strange Review imo, but I agree that scores are just numbers and everyone has their own tastes and style.....

@syler4815162342 Well, at least Tom gave an 8.0, which I feel is a good score!  I do respect his honesty, but that doesn't mean I agree with everything he says.  I have as much right to disagree with him (within reason of course) as he does formulating his opinions.  :)

What's even weirder is that objections like this come from people who haven't even played it. They are objecting to a review based on a foundation of nothing. Weird!

Asagea_888

@-INKling- Tragically, people miss out on good games when they formulate their opinions on what somebody else says about it without having even experienced it for themselves.  Or there might be an instance when they think a game is awesome based on word-of-mouth and yet when they play it for the first time, they end up hating it.  It goes both ways -- I merely wish that people could just not say anything until they've tried it first!

One of the reasons why I dislike the GS community at times. If there's an option to "like" a blog post, I would be all over yours.

@mufujifi The GS community makes me cry angry tears of rage, especially in System Wars.  GameSpot was never like this when I first joined.

@Asagea_888 @mufujifi never cry over anything from GS especially the last couple years.   just not worth it.

I'm often sorry I moved back to this country - I live close to the GS HQ

Well said, my good sir. I hate it when people come to that conclusion that if it's got a lower score, means that it instantly sucks, especially with scores below 9.

Always best to have confidence in a certain game and play it to make your own judgement to see if it's worth it or not. I look forward to playing this game as I have the Joel Edition pre-ordered.

@Mattyrock Fully agreed, mate, and well said.   Look, anything that falls short of a 9 is still a great game.   The Last of Us looks magnificent even with an 8.0 score -- the experience is different with each individual.

I wish I could have pre-ordered the Collector's Edition (with the figurine) in time, but I'm happy that the game is finally coming close to release!

It's Skyward Sword all over again lol. It's ridiculous that people get so mad over a review of a game they haven't even played.

@Eikichi-Onizuka I know, I remember that well---even though I disagreed with some of McShea's points, I respected his opinion all the same because it was his.  But, people who are going to get pissed over something they have yet to try really don't have any right to say anything.....
