It's another anniversary of 9/11. It still feels recent to me.

Flag With Dove

CBC showed the Canadian movie Diverted this evening. It was the first time I'd seen it. This was a wonderful programming choice; I know the movie is fictional, but it is based on real events that should be remembered as an example of tragedy bringing out the best in people. On the afternoon of 9/11, I was on the phone with my mother and she told me about all the planes being diverted to Newfoundland. She predicted that the passengers would be pleasantly surprised at how hospitable and friendly the Newfoundlanders were. She was right.

There was a number of planes forced to land at an airport near me on that day and I remember there was so many people looking to help out the stranded passengers that volunteers were being turned away. It was good to see the spirit of local people on such an awful day.

Dorval Airport (now Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport) was jammed to the gills with planes that morning and afternoon. My office at the time had a view of the glidepath that inbound planes would have to take. Jumbo jets were landing one after the next for hours. Every local hotel was putting the passengers up until the flight restrictions were lifted or ground transportation could be arranged.

On the subject of 9/11, I had just watched a show on....wait for it....9/11 conspiracy theories. Why do people insist on believing such outlandish nonsense when an army of specialists and engineers had already spelled out in minute detail exactly what happened that day and how the physics of it worked?

Definitely a tragic day; those who died from the plane crashes are remembered. May they rest in peace.
