OK, I'll give him that...
In my first blog post, I asked (almost as an aside) if Wedbush, Morgan, and Securities analyst Michael Pachter even played video games for the amount of time he spends trying to predict their futures. This very moment I am watching the gametrailers show Bonus Round, featuring an interview with Pachter and another analyst. For the record, Pachter does play video games. All right, fine. However, this brings up a larger point.
For a while, I had little to no respect for Michael Pachter, as, I understand, many gamers do. He just seemed like a pompous jerk who had to have an opinion on everything. I think how I felt can be partly attributed to the media's treatment of him (see: every blog ever), but no matter where my feelings came from, they were unfounded.
Sure, he has an opinion, but he's an analyst. It's kind of what he does: share where he thinks the state of the industry is and where it's headed. Sure he's not always right, but that doesn't make him stupid, it just makes him not God. If anything, he should be commended for having the nerves to try and analyze as unpredictable and some would say turbulent an industry as gaming.
Of course, don't go thinking I believe him to be a games guru that's been horribly misjudged. He can be a bit premature, and maybe even presumptuous in his analyzing. He doesn't own this industry.
Whatever your feelings about Mr. Pachter, just make sure they're your feelings and not the media's. And remember, he gets payed to do this, so it's not like he's gonna stop. Some times it's just better to accept these things.

Missed Opportunity
Today it was announced at QuakeCon that there would be a Wolfenstein movie, Quake III Arena would be made into a browser game (!!!), along with an announcement of two more Quake related games incoming, and Rage was unveiled. And I could have seen it in person. Seriously, I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the thing is free, and heck, my mom is staying in the hotel right across the street from the Hilton Anatole for a business thingy. But I couldn't go!! Come On!!
Nooo, I had to work at a wedding. It wasn't even the wedding, it was the rehearsal! I just sat in the back and told them where to plug in the microphone and pushed buttons on CD player. Sure it payed $100, but still!

What the Heck am I Doing Here? (Attempt #2)
Last night I wrote my first blog post. I personally thought it was really good. My computer disagreed and decided to fizzle out on me. So now I shall attempt to port that post or remake it, with added content including new maps extended story and even... better punctuation. In doing so, I shall present random thoughts in what I cannot guarantee will be a cohesive form.
I was supposed to go to QuakeCon this weekend. I was excited because it would have been my first gaming-related event to attend in person. Unfortunately I have to work on the Saturday I was planning to go. Oh well, maybe next year.
It would be a dream come true to attend an event like E3 (new or old), GDC, or even QuakeCon. I have a passion for gaming that isn't really equaled by many other passions in my life. However I have never been to a tournament or event, and to see my passion displayed in a public setting with others who shared that passion would be an incredible experience. It is because of that passion that I hope to become a developer/ gaming journalist and plan to begin developing via XNA, soon.
I regularly read Game Informer magazine, and I follow sites like GameSpot, GI Online, gametrailers and various gaming blogs. I have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of games from the past 3-4 years. However, due to a limited budget, I rarely get to play the games I read so much about. Considering that I only own a Wii, DS and PS2, can I really consider myself a hardcore gamer? Those systems are about as mainstream as it gets. I have barely been able to experience the next gen of PS3 and 360. Does that make me a gamer, or an "industry-watcher" like Michael Pachter (does that guy even play games?) These thoughts haunt me (too strong?) everyday. So I play some Super Paper Mario and don't worry about it.
What do you (who?) think?
As long as I have been following GameSpot, some one year, I have always liked Rich Gallup. He was a great host, but he also did great behind-the-scenes things that we got occasional glimpses of. As much as I like Jeff Gerstmann, GS won't be the same without Rich.
That's all for now. I must admit, I think the first attempt at this post turned out better than this. Oh well. I finally got it out. So for now, so long and thanks for all the games.
