    Why Link Should Talk
    in Addition to Audible Dialogue

This is my personal opinion, so that doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong. Discussion is all I’m looking for…

I love what Nintendo does. They have a vision, and their vision is to make video games the way they like it and the way they think is right. But there is always room for progress, no one is perfect.

Judging from the title of this thread, you have surmised that I obviously want Link to speak out in the following “The Legend of Zelda” title. I will explain why I think it would be the right way to go.

Nintendo and the people in charge of the direction of Zelda state that the character commonly known as “Link” is kept silent and you can choose your name as his so you can project yourself as him, or immerse yourself into the game more closely. But I believe the direction they are going at the moment contradicts those statements.

My first argument is a simple one; simply that when we see a character, or witness the events of a character from the third-person perspective, we expect to see them show personality. Especially when there are cut scenes or FMV’s, we aren’t necessarily controlling the character anymore and therefore expect them to do their own thing, since they are already doing most of their own thing anyway.

Obviously we are controlling the character most of the time, but the only thing we control are their movements and physical actions. We can’t speak to other characters in the game for them. There is no way for us to truly project one’s self as that on-screen character interacting with others.

A few games actually are closer to taking Nintendo’s philosophy for Zelda more closely. Namely, The Elder Scrolls series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, and Fable all give you a bigger voice and choice in the matter when playing the game. Projecting yourself as that on-screen character means making their choices as well. Link makes all his own choices ultimately; sure, we decide how and what to cut with his sword, but his greater goal isn’t for us to choose. We can choose whether to play the game or not, and that’s about all the choice we get.

My second argument branches off from the first one; we obviously have a character who makes his own decisions in the game, whether it be completing temples to gain items to advance or saving Zelda by defeating Ganon, but then we don’t understand why he does it. Are we expected to come up with a reason “as Link” for doing all this from nothing? In other words, do we have to make up a reason for why Link does the things he does? It is more of a distraction really, and not very immersive.

Being a unique character, Link has no real personality, besides being that of a [assumedly] good guy. We aren’t given any choices on how or why he is a good guy. He decides to do the things on his own, but no explanation is given why, mainly because Link doesn’t voice his own opinion. The player can’t be expected to relate with a character making his own decisions for no apparent reason. I am sure most of us find ourselves relating more closely to supportive characters in the series. We can say we relate to Link since he is the strong, courageous good guy, but how else do we relate to him? That’s just about it, he is a shallow character, we can’t be him since he does make his own choices, but we are “expected” to come up with our own inner feelings as to why Link makes his choices, which is more of guess work than relation.

My final argument is that Nintendo should grow with the times. They talk of innovation and growth, but sticking to old formulas won’t get you far with that philosophy. Adding dialogue to a game (and not just audible dialogue in “The Legend of Zelda” series, but having Link speak as well OR making it more Knights of the Old Republic based, where Link has a reason to be silent since we simply talk for him) could essentially be catching up with the times and technology.

Back when the first The Legend of Zelda was released, there was the same format of choosing your character’s name and not seeing/hearing Link speak. That is understandable since it simply was not possible to put lots of personality into a character with the limited technology. A decade later, Ocarina of Time is released and there is no audible dialogue or FMV’s at all, which is understandable since sound and movie files still were fairly large compared to the space the more primitive graphics took. But now that there is a huge amount of space for dialogue and plenty of tricks to fool our minds into believing a character on-screen is a breathing, living person, why not take advantage of that?

My conclusion: Nintendo can and will do what they like, but taking advice from the consumer is important since we know what we want and like. The Legend of Zelda is a franchise that we expect things from. The expectations should definitely be met, but exceeded as well. Twilight Princess came about because we all wanted to see Link as he was in Ocarina of Time, and we all expected - or wanted - it to be perfect. Perfect means whole, and Twilight Princess was missing fundamental things that we expect in this day and age. There is not any reason for avoiding our expectations unless they purposely want to disappoint.

The greatest goal is to do something the way you think is the best for it, and if Nintendo continues to do that, then I’m pleased. But most of us like to see those around us succeed, and we ourselves definitely want to succeed as well. I have one request. I would like Nintendo to experiment at least, and put audible dialogue into “The Legend of Zelda” and to even take it up a notch; give Link spoken dialogue, and his first ever dialogue ever in any of Nintendo’s Zelda games.

So please, voice your opinion and criticize any fault you find in my reasoning or reasons. I'm not looking for "You're stupid", I'm looking for explanations on what you think is wrong. Thanks.

I got tons of games this year.  It was nuts.  Then I played my last year of high school football and I will be finishing up drama by the end of senior year.  WoW.

I guess my New Year's Resolution will be to continue my journey towards finding the meaning of life and doing what I think is right.  And in addition to that, I'll probably find myself an Xbox 360 and Gears of War and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.  Perhaps I'll start making some money so I can buy a nice, powerful computer.

I want to make more friends and get my body into *athletic* shape as well.  Yeah, this last year was nuts.  But I had fun.  I want to have more fun next year.

Here are some terms I have seen (and come up with) for Nintendo Wii.

    Wii-mote
    Wii-set (reset)
Newbie on the Wii = Wii-tard
    Wii will rock you
    Wii-place/Wii-charge the batte-Wiis
When the console breaks, Wii-turn it
    Wii-l in some fish

And a game Nintendo should make: Pilot Wii-ngs

    (no spoilers here)

That's right, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the best Legend of Zelda title yet.  The only thing is that it is not quite the leap that Ocarina of Time was to A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening.  It isn't quite the revolutionary expected, but it is still magnificently well done.

Look at my review if you want any more of my opinions.

It was hopeful thinking that Microsoft would lower the Xbox 360's price this holiday season.

They are definitely figuring that they will get a lot of sales since it is the holiday season. The PS3 will be too much money for some and not available to purchase for most others, so the Xbox 360 for $400 seems like a natural fall back system for disappointed PS3-goers... as well as Wii-goers who can't find one.

But with the Nintendo Wii cheaper even than Xbox 360's core system, a price drop seems like the best plan at least by the end of next year once Nintendo is up to speed with demand.

Who knows, it's possible the summer of '07 will see a 360 price drop.

This new album is hilarious!!  It's not officially released until September 26, but the songs I have heard so far are so good.  My favorite so far is "White and Nerdy" parodying Chamillionaire's "Ridin' [Dirty]".

But yeah, you gotta find the songs and listen to them.  Then Sep. 26, buy the album.  You can find White and Nerdy on www.myspace.com/thelovemaster supplied by Chamillionaire himself.

There's also "Canadian Idiot" parodying Green Day's "American Idiot" along with "You're Pitiful" parodying James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" (which is actually legal to download because Weird Al can't put it on his album, so he put it out himself).  Check his official site www.weirdal.com and you can actually download "Don't Download This Song" which is a very good original song by Weird Al.

Also expect Usher's "Confessions Part II" to be parodied ("Confessions Part III") and Taylor Hick's song "Do I Make You Proud" ("Do I Creep You Out").  The polka is back too, containing songs from The Killers, Rihanna, Kayne West, and more.

Friday, September 1st, Battle Ground High School's varsity football team played and won our first game.  We beat Milwaukie, Oregon 30-0.  This is the first time in years our school has had a shutout game (meaning the other team didn't score).

I play starting varsity defensive tackle and I'm pretty excited; we're training hard for this Friday's game.

Everybody knows it costs an arm and a leg to buy gasoline today.  It is common knowledge that there "isn't much left" and that burning fossil fuels expels tons of harmful substances such as carbon dioxide.  But imagine the major leap we'd take if we could use WATER as a fuel source.  It was thought to be impossible to make water a fuel without enormous amounts of electricity... until now.  Watch these videos on this page to get a good look: http://hytechapps.com/company/press

Instead of being two hydrogen atoms connected with one oxygen atom, the process of electrolysis that has been implemented splits the atoms so it makes a new compound called HHO.  It is atomic energy that is very safe compared to the industrial compounds in use today such as gasoline and oxy-acetylene.  This "water", when used in welding, emits flames only about 259-279 degrees fahrenheit, but when applied to something for a long period of time, say like steel, it can create a concentrated "flame" or reaction with the object that it heats up faster than any other industrialized gas can.

Within seconds the flame will reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees fahrenheit with objects such as tungsten or ceramics.  The flame is very controlled though, and is extremely safe if you know what you are dealing with.

You truly have to see it to believe it.  This stuff is already on the market today.  You can retro-fit your car to increase mileage by 150%, still using gas, but adding the "Aquygen" technology to it.  Check the above link for the videos.  Go here to the home page: http://hytechapps.com/

I can't even begin to describe how important this is.  Just get this out to anybody and everybody you know.  This is NO JOKE!  This is the real deal.  This could mean a branch of new scientific study and dependant fuel source.  It will easily replace gasoline, all we got to do, as the consumer, is demand it!

My parents are forcing me to go onto a week-long mission with two Mormon missionaries... which is going to suck royally.

I don't know where to begin how badly this sucks... because right after I get back, I'm not going to have any more free time because I'm going right into football practice.  This week was going to be my last good week... until now... man I wanna curse so bad.

This means that all I can do is read scriptures, ride my bike around in a suit, preach to people, have doors slammed on my face, eat a little, and sleep for four hours.  Very stupid.  VERY VERY stupid.  Gawd.

    LoL, I need help...

The first computer that I have been able to connect to the Internet on is my computer.  I'm using my parents' at the moment, which is fairly decent... not good enough to run Half-Life or even a game after 2001.  But it still runs.

But you see, it broke a while back and I was mad... and today I finally fixed it!!  Yay!  But I can't get Windows XP installed on it for some reason.  I was thinking that maybe I could get a new hard drive though.  Would I also need a new motherboard?  Anyways, Joseph out!

I am sure that many people here have started playing old Windows games way back in *the day*...  I don't know if you remember, but Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max: Hit the Road, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis were among the best in that time and I LOVED them... all by Lucasarts.  There is something about those old games that remains with you because they were so fun.  It's hard to describe.

Those were the good ol' days.  But I have been able to relive some of those days.  Not just by replaying the old games, but by playing some new ones.  Most of you have heard of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, I take it.  But how many of you have actually played it?  Bioware, the developers, must have been influenced by the classic adventures in those old adventuring, puzzle solving titles.

KotOR (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) may possibly be one of the funnest games in my life, and definitely one of my favorites.  There's plenty of puzzle solving invovled, but in addition to that, you have choices in solving problems different ways.  Another wonderful addition is the excellent animations of the characters, emphatically the voice acting.  The acting is so excellent... I've heard many people say that KotOR is more loyal to the classic Star Wars universe than that of some of the new movies in the prequel trilogy.

I strongly encourage anybody and everybody to try out KotOR.  Almost everybody I know who has, including myself, can easily spend several days straight playing it.  The environment is that emersive.  The KotOR games are, in my opinion, a continuance and/or "revampage" of the classic point-and-click adventures in the early 90's that brought so much fun and happiness to gamers everywhere.  Expect some really enjoyable twists in KotOR's plot, the story is top notch, comparable to any Blockbuster movie, Star Wars movie, or Final Fantasy adventure.

I have been inspired to go into depth about my thoughts on the recent video game console wars.  In my opinion, when video games first came around, there wasn't much of a war at all.  There was like the arcade years and then the home console deal started.  I guess Atari was pretty much unbeaten until they were compelled to bury a large amount of copies of game cartridges in a land fill because the games sucked but were reproduced a little too much.

So, there was the great game crash.  Then Nintendo took the video game spot light [no pun intended] and created really good games.  Hopefully you know which ones.  First, the NES reigned virtually unopposed, then SNES had very little competition… only Sega posed any threat at all.  Nintendo’s handhelds had virtually no competition also.  But after SNES and Game Boy gobbled up lots of money, Sony released a home console disc system, called PlayStation.

That’s when Nintendo didn’t come out with the best answer.  They released what was considered an “old” system that still used cartridges and people believed that PlayStation brought more “seriousness” or “maturity” to games.  Final Fantasy VII was one of the games that started more realism in games… for example, before FFVII, there was almost no cussing in games what so ever.  PlayStation had new, great games that people really wanted.  The Nintendo 64 still had the memorable, lovable characters that kept growing up.  Super Mario 64 was THE defining platform genre game of its time.  And The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered to be the best adventure game of all time by many, if not the best video game ever made to this day.  Still, more people were buying Gran Turismo and more mature games because it was new and most have already had the Nintendo experience.

The best games were on the Nintendo 64 in my opinion, but PlayStation did have the combination that drew more people: a new disc system, updated 3-D graphics (before N64), and more mature games.  Also, being first to the fray had a major part to play in the N64-versus-PS1 system war.  So, Sony decided to be first to start in the next console war by releasing the PlayStation 2.

People trusted Sony, just like people trusted Nintendo, and bought the PS2’s.  There weren’t too many great games released at the beginning except for Grand Theft Auto III and some role playing games.  The only positive was that Sony was getting TONS of third party support.  People bought all the mediocre games and continue to this day doing it.  Then GameCube and Xbox were released about a year after the PS2 was.  There was limited third party support for these guys and PS2 was already “hip.”  But now in 2006, we’ve seen many good games on Xbox and GameCube that outclass the PlayStation 2 games in many ways.

The only reason I think Sony is the best selling with console and software is because they got people to believe they had it all.  But most of the games on PS2 are mediocre at best with only a few games that will be hailed as “classic.”  The PlayStation 2 has Final Fantasy X, God of War, Dragon Quest VIII, and a few lesser role playing games like Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, Shadow Hearts, and some sports games like Gran Turismo.  What impressed me were the GameCube and Xbox games.  On Xbox, they had bar raising experiences such as Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Halo 2.  Nintendo made most of the best games on the GameCube such as Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Pikmin, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The PlayStation 2’s top games, the Grand Theft Auto franchise, wound up on PC and Xbox and look way better on those platforms.  Even their Metal Gear Solid games aren’t completely exclusive to PS2.  Though the PlayStation 2 sold the most units, the sales were spread over numerous games that are also available on other consoles in better form.  If you don’t believe me, check some best selling charts such as this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_selling_video_games

I believe that people are realizing that Sony doesn’t have all the best games.  The PlayStation 3 is going to have a hard time competing with Xbox 360 and especially the Nintendo Wii this console generation.

For a year, up until March 20, 2006, my friend would bring up the subject about the sequel to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind almost daily.  He said it would be so great and that he couldn't wait.  I didn't like Morrowind a great deal, so I ignored him.  Now that it's finally out, he has spent hundreds of hours on it and let me play it a while on his computer.

I want it so bad right now and have started saving up money for an Xbox 360.  But now that I've seen demonstrations and trailers for the newly named Nintendo Wii, I don't know whether to get a Wii or a 360.  I want The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess [at its best] really bad and Super Smash Bros. Brawl almost as bad.

    I need money!!

    Guy Ronald Lewis II... September 8, 1989 - April 30, 2006

My good friend, Guy Lewis, died in the late night/early morning on his way home from prom.  Apparently he was driving too fast, going up a straight road home and drifted to the other side of the road, most likely from falling asleep, and went down off the shoulder into a ditch, and slammed into the corner of another road's ditch.  But his Geo Metro didn't stop there; it unearthed dirt, rocks, and a signpost, more than a bulldozer would be able to take out in an hour, and went airbourne over the road into foliage. He is believed to have died from a broken neck from hitting the ditch before his car rolled upside down and burned.

You could see paper and school homework strewn on the ground among pieces of the damaged car once the chassis was towed away.  Pieces of his sweater were on the ground too...

Guy Lewis was a great, wonderful person. Just from what I've observed, he was kind to everybody around him, going out of his way to say "hi" to some, and finding the odd person out and trying help them fit in. One day he came to my house while I was carrying rocks and yard debris and he immediately began helping me even though he had nice school clothes on.

I love him so much. It will be so hard to comprehend that I will not see him in 6th period computers messing around with games and that I will not be able to spend any more of my life laughing and talking seriously with him. All the good memories, all the fun we shared. The campouts, video game parties, youth group activities...  I remember it like yesterday when we were playing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory co-operatively on the Xbox, joking and messing around, or digging holes for fence posts, or talking late into the night on campouts... I will miss him so badly.  I love you so much, Guy.

I hope we can all learn from Guy. He was such a cool person, and a good friend.
