    Berserk ( 1997-10-07 to 1998-03-31 )

Short review today. I know you didn't like Berserk Petri but I loved it. I loved Berserk so much that for the first time ever I'm going to read a Manga. The reason because Berserk ended with such a big cliff-hanger and it doesn't seem like there will be a season 2 anytime soon. Speaking of the ending, the only thing I didn't like was the ending. Not how it ended but how it was portrayed because it was very disturbing and people who have watched it know what I'm talking about (not going to spoil it). After watching the first episode of Berserk it seemed like the series was all brainless action and it reminded me of the cartoon series of Conan the Barbarian. But it was much more than that as you progress through the series. It had politics, romance, assassinations and betrayal/trust. Because Berserk is so violent with a dark atmosphere it's obviously not for everyone. For my personal preference not only is Berserk a must watch, but a must buy. Up next Kannazuki No Miko.

    Gun X Sword ( 2005-07-04 to 2005-12-26 )

Everything about the animation was great. The colors were crisp; the character movements were so smooth and fluid. What really stood out in the animation was how good the facial expressions were, especially for the main character Van. When Van's tired he looks tired, when he's lazy he looks lazy (along with his posture) and when he's mad he looks pissed. I saw a lot of this in the earlier episodes which was great, but for some reason the great facial expressions were mostly absent in the later episodes. What didn't look good were the armors/mechs and I only counted two good looking ones (Ray and Michael). Most of them were just down right ugly.

Every single voice actor was excellent and fitted the physical appearance of the characters perfectly. The majority of the background music was great, so good that I thought it came from a Star Wars movie or a Halo game. But there was one I didn't like and I think it was done by the VA of Van where he was humming with an orchestral tune. I didn't like the opening song because it sounded more appropriate for a samurai anime, but I did like the closing song. The sound effects were nothing special, just seemed pretty average.

The story was kept simple, which was good since the cast was relatively large for a 26 episode series. What I really liked about Gun X Sword that I think not a lot of other anime does is that they brought back a lot of the characters in the earlier episodes into the later ones and compare that to a series like Saiyuki where you'll only see the secondary characters once in the series. In the first half of the series the armors felt like such an add-on and I didn't really give a rats ass about the armors. I was solely watching the series for the hand to hand combat, characters, story and the humor, but it wasn't until the last five episodes where the armors played a bigger role and made the series that much better. There was a big WTF moment in Gun X Sword and not in the good way. The episode about the Swimsuit Kingdom was a complete mess because it totally didn't match the style of the other episodes. I don't mind dirty humor, but when the rest of the series is clean, there really is no place for that kind of stuff. It's like putting Dave Chappelle in a soap opera.

You know you've watched a good series when you're left wanting more, and I want more or at least an OVA. What made me really like this series were the great characters with the simple story. I would not recommend Gun X Sword to anyone who is looking for a Mech anime because the focus on mechs just isn't there, but for anyone looking for a great adventure with really likeable characters, then jump aboard. Up next Berserk.

    Fafner ( 2004-07-04 to 2004-12-26 )

Fafner is basically a fusion of Neon Genesis Evangelion, RahXephon, Gundam Seed and Gunparade March. The first few episodes were like Evangelion with the whole military city theme. The Festums who were the "bad guys" looked like something you'll see in RahXephon. The character design in Fafner was a complete rip off of Gundam Seed. Kazuki who is the main character in Fafner looked exactly like Athrun, with black hair. Kazuki's father, Fumihiko looked just like Mu La Flaga and one of Kazuki's friends, Toomi looked like Miriallia. The whole story was just like Gunparade March where the focus wasn't in the Fafner/Mech fighting, instead more focused in the relationships between several pilots.

The animation wasn't spectacular, but it was above average and everything would have looked better if the color was brighter. The Fafners only looked good in some angles, but when looking at the Fafners straight up, they look terrible because the size of the torso was way too small compared to limbs and the upper body. The Festums only had one color, gold and you can't really tell them apart.

All the voice actors fitted perfectly with their characters and I didn't find any misplaced voices. The majority of the background music was good, but there were a few I didn't like. I also didn't like the opening song, which had a nice tune but was ruined by the terrible singing. After listening to the closing song a few times, I ended up liking it.

The first half of Fafner wasn't really exciting because all the pilots were jocking for positions and you add to the fact the Festums weren't too interesting to being with. But once everyone knew their roles in the second half everything became more interesting and the teamwork the pilots showed were superb. Up Next Gun X Sword.

So I ordered Ouendan from YesAsia on Sunday night and it shipped on Monday. The game arrived today, only took 3 days to get here with free shipping and to make things sweeter, YesAsia packaged the game with three magazines (two gaming, one soccer). I get a package from Play-Asia in a couple days and It'll be interesting  to see what they come with.

If anyone is interested in getting Ouendan from YesAsia, use the coupon code OSU5 to get $5 off.

BTW you can expect the Fafner review to be up in a couple days.

    Saiyuki Reload ( 2003-10-02 to 2004-03-25 )

It's been a long day and I'm tired, so I'll make this short. Basically everything has been improved in the second season from the animation to the background music, which I complained so much about in the last season. Since it is a continuation of the first season the story was practically left unchanged and with only 25 episodes this season was much more enjoyable because it had less useless episodes. Up next Fafner.

    Saiyuki ( 2000-04-04 to 2001-03-27 )

The basic structure of Saiyuki reminded me a lot of Wolf's Rain. Both had four characters with different personalities traveling together to find Shangri-La in Saiyuki where as in Wolf's Rain the four characters were looking for Paradise. Wolf's Rain had a much darker atmosphere where in Saiyuki everything seemed colorful. Even though Saiyuki is very colourful it didn't look crisp instead they looked muddy and sometimes in a fast fight scene the animation looked really texture less.

The majority of the background music sounded so cheesy and dated. The first opening song was again cheesy, but some reason I liked it. Didn't like the first closing song or the second opening, but loved the second closing. Overall the voices sounded good, voices matched the physical appearance of the characters nicely.

The story was basically a group of four (a priest and three demons) traveling to the west to destroy Gyumao. You would think they would be able to pull this off in 50 episodes, instead it ended half was through. I really tried to like Saiyuki but the cheesy background music really ruined the atmosphere and the only time I really enjoyed it was when it wasn't serious. Up next Saiyuki Reload.

    Little Snow Fairy Sugar ( 2001-10-02 to 2002-03-26 )

I have finally found the most annoying character ever and she just totally ruins the whole anime. Sugar who is one of the two main characters is so unbelievable annoying. Every time Saga, who is the other main character talks, Sugar interrupts Saga. It's like having a five year old brother/sister pulling your shirt every minute asking questions. What makes it worst is Sugar tries to be cute as she complains and whines about everything.

The animation is very well done. I really liked the style for the background because it looked liked it was colored in with pencil crayons, which made it looked very unique. The colors for the characters is very bright and crisp, nothing looked mucky.

I hated the opening music and didn't particularly like the closing music either. The only voice I didn't like was Sugar, which added to her annoyance. What I really liked was the sound effects and even though I hate Sugar the sound effects she makes is very cute and some of the piano solos were very nice. The story was nothing special and it wasn't even the main focus until the last episode.

The only episode I liked were the ones where Sugar wasn't the main focus, which was only a handful of episodes. The only character I really liked was Greta because she is so full of herself and whenever people ignore her it made the scene humorous. Also the music that is played whenever she is on screen fitted so perfectly. I would not recommend anyone watching this since you're better off watching Midroi No Hiba or Chobits and even if you watched Midori or Chobits already, it's a better idea to watch it again then to watch Little Snow Fairy Sugar. Up next Saiyuki.

Plot Summary: Season Fairies create and control the weather using special musical instruments. The only way to achieve this is to search for and find the "Twinkles" that will make their magical flowers bloom. The only problem is that none of them have any idea what a Twinkle is. Neon Genesis Evangelion ( 1995-10-04 to 1996-03-27 )

Took me a long time to watch this series because I started watching during E3, which wasn't a good idea since I only got five episodes in the whole week. Then last week the Blue jays were on the West coast and they played all their games during the time I watch anime.

Feeling really sleepy, so a short review today. I really liked animation considering it was made 10 years ago. Even if it's a decade old it still looks better than half of the Anime out today. The only problem I had was some of the Angels weren't creative at all, I mean there was one that was just a cube. All the voice actors sounded so perfect especially Shinji's and Rei's. The opening and some of the background music sounded very dated, but the closing music was nice. I loved the first 23 episodes but I didn't like last three because it felt and looked so simple. Up next Little Snow Fairy Sugar.

    s-CRY-ed ( 2001-07-04 to 2001-12-26 )

I needed to free some space for my HDD since it was getting to full and I was getting ready to download some new series. So I thought maybe s-CRY-ed was going to mediocre and if I watched it, I could've deleted it right away. But I was wrong and it feels bitter sweat because since it was so good I have to keep it in my HDD and I still have to find some free space.

The animation's really nice; the movements of the characters were very smooth. The colors were very crisp and bright but some of the colors didn't really fit the object, such as the "Big Magnum" Alter had purple bullets and the Aircraft Carriers in the second last episode were a nasty purple again.

I didn't like the opening music at first because the beginning sounded like a Ricky Martin song, but I guess I grew into it. I'm not sure if it was the downloaded version but I didn't get to see the closing video until the 24th episode. I didn't find any background music I didn't like and I especially like the Jazzy ones which sounded a lot like the ones in Cowboy Bebop. All the voice actors sounded great, no one sounded fake except for Kazuma's laugh.

I found the story to be the weakest part, but it was still decent. It had a constant pace and it didn't feel rushed or slowed down. I thought the first half was great and the second half to be excellent, hence the 8.5. I really liked how some characters switched sides near the middle because it really balanced out the characters and if the second half were to continue at the same pace (character wise) it would've gotten really stale. There was one thing or character that I really didn't like and it was Kanami. She is the most useless character I have seen in a while, almost as useless as Flay from Gundam Seed. Kanami was such a burden for everyone and to make things worse, she couldn't do anything and when she's place in a kitchen with all the older women, she looks so misplaced. I think it would've been better if she looked older, maybe 17-20 instead of 10.

I'm sure Dragonball fans are really going to like s-CRY-ed because they are very similar, where characters have different power stages, some characters are so powerful that it can be seen from space and people can move so fast that it looks like they're teleporting. Up Next Neon Genesis Evangelion.
