Lots of fighter, lots of weapon, sounds great! But in fact, there's not really much to do...

This new game from Tekken and Soul Calibur II producer was quite promising. The street fight style is not a common theme in fighting game. So it sounds original. You got 60 fighters, 30 weapons... those features sounds great! And all those fighters are unique in terms of fighting art. Some are just brutal criminals, and others are martial arts master. And i think most martial arts are there. Muy-thai, Kung fu, Karate, etc... The game's idea sounds very good. And if it was a Final Fight style ??? Oh my god that would really kick ass! But the most important aspect of a fighting game is the gameplay. What would be fun if there's no good gameplay? Actually, the gameplay is the big down of the game. This ain't Final Fight. This ain't Tekken nor Soul Calibur. You are in a stage (looks more like a cage), and there are rounds like most fighting game. How come they put rounds into this game? This is Street fight! Not an Iron Fist Tournament or quest for Soul Edge. You can run like crazy and the other guy will have some difficulties to hit you... making the fight super easy. Now let's talk about the fighting system. Very simple. One button to hit (so that makes combos very repetitive). You don't have to hit the enemy to start combos. So you can just keep hitting the hit button... and that should do the job, unless you're playing with your friend and he would do the same thing. Then, you have the parry button. You only have to press that button when you're being attacked. It doesn't feel like you need timing to parry. There's no risk at parrying. You attack, or you decide to parry. Both are equally effective because when you parry, you can counter-attack while he's not aware. Then, you have the throw button. Throws are nice moves, just like in Tekken series and Soul Calibur too. But then again, it's not like if there was a big challenge using them. And finaly, you got the stunt button that will make you run no matter what to the obstacle in front of you.. and most of time you'll do a somersault to hopefully flip over your enemy, which is not very effective, since this is very predictable. You can pick up weapons, but then again your hit button will often result in using your kicks instead of the weapon. Anyway, there's no good balace between weapons and kick/punck. Kicks and punch are almost as effective as weapon. So they don't feel like necessary. They are not as effective as in Mortal Kombat: Deception, for example. This game feels more like a card game to me. No strategic at all. You can attack, parry or throw. Attack is good against throw, throw is good against parry, and parry is good against attack. Parry has no effect on throw. So it's like 2 fighters... and then "show me your card!" If it's Attack versus Parry, Parry wins. You don't have to think before you act, you just have to act. That's all. Act, and hope your move will be effective. There's a better challenge at playing 4 fighters at a time though. But to make it simple... if you lose or win a round... you don't feel like it's because of a lack or superior skills. It's not that funny. After a couple of fights the first time i've played... i did feel disappointed. It's not really a beat-em'up, it's a fighting game. I'm a huge fan of Tekken and Soul Calibur. This can't be compared to Soul Calibur or Tekken. Rent it first.
