Unit is a surprisingly good shooter, which is unfortunately lacking it's own soul.

User Rating: 7.5 | Unit 13 VITA
In the current console generation, we see blockbuster titles, each with it parading it's own art style, and it's own flavour of story and atmosphere, whether it be fighting the hordes of Locust in Gears of War, or going through a literal WW3 in Modern Warfare 3. Unit 13 lacks this, it looks generic and the atmosphere is generic, there is almost zero background or character and doesn't create it's own identity. But you might be okay with that.

You see, Unit 13 is actually a very competent little shooter. It works without a hitch, it plays very well and feels fluid throughout it's vast amount of levels (and randomised levels with different objectives), and it's range of short 2 minute missions and its other 10 minute long hauls make it great for the moblilty of the Vita, being able to pick it up on a train, defeat about 20 bad guys and blow something up, then put it away. Zipper were onto something here, but clearly it feels a tad barebones and overly rushed a bit. Unit 13, is cleanly presented with your usual; conventions of your Modern Ware shooter; Desert Scenarios, Terrorists and mini plots in each mission that are vaguely interesting. At timers Unit 13 shines through as quite a pretty and technically impressive game, despite it's drabness of it's art style.

Having numerous characters, who each have their own pro's and cons, and their own weapons who can be used with others when levelled up is a neat idea, including the Xp system, which is your standard XP levelling, however it's nice to have, and makes you want to get one character to use a certain gun, it's all pretty standard stuff here, which is fine, and you most likely won't care because you have a solid 3rd person shooter on your hands here.

Online wise, you can tackle missions and objectives, and unlock HVT targets which are assassination missions. All of which ar ein 2 player co-op. It's disappointing to see that there is no online multiplayer (Even 4v4 would have been fantastic), and Unit 13 feels perfect for a frantic and small team based multiplayer, ala Gears of War, however, it was not mean to be.

Unit 13, is a surprisingly good shooter, it ticks lots of boxes you want, but unfortunately due to it's lacking Online, dull story and drab art style, Unit 13 is easily forgettable, which is a shame.

The Good
-Solid Shooting and Level design
-Ticks all the boxes of your standard Shooter
-Randomized Level objectives add replay value
-Challenging at times

The Bad
-Standard, and lacking Soul
-Art Style is somewhat drab and feels generic
-Lacking Competitive Online
