Which game should you buy for your system? Should you buy that highly acclaimed shooter? Or should you buy that RPG that isn't said to be exceptionally good, but is very long? Or do you want something that you can pick up and play anytime you feel like? GRU tries to help you with your decision making as to exactly which game will be right for you.

Not only can all the members pitch in with their opinions of which game one should buy on a system, a list of the top games that GRU recommends will be posted, so that you can decide which game to buy.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GAMES THAT ARE NOT LISTED IN THE GRU DATABASE WILL NOT FEATURE THIS LIST. IF YOU FEEL THERE IS ANY GAME MISSING IN THE LISTS THAT IS IN THE GRU DATABASE, PLEASE CONTACT ANY ONE OF THE OFFICERS. ONLY CURRENT GEN SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN LISTED.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION

Red Dead Redemption

calvinsora in his review for Red Dead Redemption wrote:
Red Dead Redemption does a few things wrong, but also does a lot of things right. It has an amazing atmosphere, exciting combat, great mission variety and fantastic presentation; it's one of the most complete sandbox experiences around, proving that something as simple as a tale of vendetta in America can be an unforgettable experience of incredible scale. So don your hat, pick up a revolver and delve into the world of RDR.

jg4xchamp in his review for Red Dead Redemption wrote:
Multiplayer complaints aside, Red Dead Redemption is a fun experience overall and will provide enough satisfaction after the credits have rolled with just the superb single player. Beautiful scenery, an impressive game world, a loveable protagonist and great audio work are more than enough reasons to purchase this game. Red Dead Redemption is a memorable experience that offers a game world that is both gripping and engaging from beginning to end.

MASS EFFECT 2

ME2

celtic1962 in his review for Mass Effect 2 wrote:
Die-hard role-playing fans may feel that ME2 was dumbed down in the RPG elements in order to give it a broader appeal, but the fact is these changes make ME2 a better game than the original. There is far less time navigating through menus and more time spent in the action. With how well the original was received it would have been easy to release a sequel that basically played the same way, but Bioware obviously put in a huge effort to make improvements. While the villian and story wasn't quite up to the original game it was still gripping and better than just about any other video game out there. Highly recommended for both RPG and shooter fans.

LGTX in his review for Mass Effect 2 wrote:
To round things up, I'll admit that there will be many pretensions to one of this year's best Role-Playing... let's call it Action games. Yes, it did make that huge step from hours of inventory micro-management and focused on adrenaline-filled gunplay, but apart from this imbalance, it is still the Mass Effect we loved and missed: the futuristic cityscapes, mysterious enemies, a living, breathing world filled with believable aliens and a scale of events ranging from personal drama to the obvious battle for humanity and (eventually) the Galaxy. BioWare successfully incorporated a darked out piece to the trilogy, and now it's up to them to deliver a worthy conclusion. For as we already know, the third part will end the adventures of Commander Shepard permanently, one way or another. Meanwhile, you can enjoy gunning down Collectors, doing a speedrun for the third playthrough (trust me, I wasn't tempted at first as well), and desperately waiting for the numerous DLCs planned through this year.

JustPlainLucas in his review for Super Mario Galaxy 2 wrote:
As far as platforming goes, you're just not going to find a better platformer this generation other than Super Mario Galaxy 2. Everything that made the first Super Mario Galaxy remarkable has been polished with an extra coat of wax. The only flaw, and it's a very small one depending on your disposition, is that there is too much familiarity. It doesn't hold that same level of impressive awe simply due to the fact that the two games aren't even three years apart. It just seems too soon, but if you're given another delicious prime cut of steak from the same cow, you're not going to object in the least. Every Wii owner and Mario fan needs to experience the wonders of this title, just like they did with the first.

dapman418 in his review for Super Mario Galaxy 2 wrote:
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is every platformer fan's dream come true. From its precise controls, to the variety of goals in both 2D and 3D, challenging difficulty, and the spectacular presentation, it is a package that is streamlined, complete, and completely amazing. It is neither a mere expansion of its predecessor nor a game with major faults that detract from the overall experience this game has to offer. It is the best game available on the Nintendo Wii to date, and no person should miss out on this grand Mario adventure that raises the bar beyond expectations.

POKEMON HEARTGOLD/SOULSILVER

Pokemon HeartGold

charizard1605 in his review for Pokemon HeartGold-SoulSilver wrote:
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver is the single greatest handheld game ever created. It not only trumps the originals in every way possible, but it also retains their charm, and paradoxically, their very spirit of innovation, by adding a spate of never before seen features to the franchise. Yeah, sure, there are a few niggles along the way, and there is no escaping the fact that the game has that 'kiddy' vibe to it all along- but look beneath the juvenile dialog and the vibrant and colorful graphics, and what you'll have is not only the deepest and most addictive title you'll ever play, but also one that trumps its esteemed predecessors in every way possible, and is, without any doubt, the greatest handheld game ever created.

khoofia_pika in his review for Pokemon HeartGold-SoulSilver wrote:
Pokemon is addictive. That much is obvious, even if you haven't played a single Pokemon game. It is the most addictive series there ever was, and HeartGold/SoulSilver are the epitome of that addictiveness. It can last you forever. Apart from the main story and all the side/after quests put together (which last us around sixty hours), we can spend hours and hours on travelling through the regions, trying to 'catch 'em all', or battling online, or trading with friends, or challenging the Gyms and the Pokemon League again. It is this mix of addictiveness and replayability that makes Pokemon the ultimate handheld experience.

All in all. Mass Effect 2 is a wonderful addition in the trilogy. It suffers from being the second game but that doesn't mean it's pulling a Matrix: Reloaded. The game also makes numerous improvements over the first graphically and the gameplay by leaps and bounds. Even if you didn't like the games predecessor or have a saved file to import, Mass Effect 2 is definitely worth adding to your gaming library.

Well, we voted in the Suggestion Box, where the motion was passed (yeah we use that term now. Sounds awfully important, doesn't it? )

Anyway, it looks great, so nice work there, pikes!

You don't fail Pikes. Actually it's brilliantly presented. It's just is this thread really that necessary? I mean, the site already has a ton of recommendation threads on the platform forums and I remember us half a year ago trying to cut down on threads like this and be minimalistic and streamlined with our approach to the union. That said, if it was approved by half a dozen people or something, I'm not going to stop them. Good effort Pikes.

Because the first vote I got was for a No.

Yeah, I remember those good old days, when I actually used to contribute useful stuff to the union... *sigh*

Back on topic, it was voted in the Suggestion Box that this thread need not be a sticky. So I just went ahead and did the best I could do with what I had in hand.

Thanks, though!

 The thread was my idea.

I pitched the idea because I was wondering about some good games to buy for a new system, and this union is the most reliable source of game critique on the entire site. Recommendations go hand-in-hand with reviews. People will recommend good games they've reviewed, others may play them, and then review them. People can find good games they've never heard about as well. No need to worry about clutter either- this isn't sticky, so if it isn't used, you won't have to see it. Besides, my man BL organized the multiple s*loads of reviews into a single and concise archive, so it's easier than ever to find the review you are looking for.

The cycle I figure will go something like this:

Recommendation = which game should I play?

Review = how much I enjoyed that game

Recommendation = any other games like this particular one I enjoyed?

To start it off- and the reason I pitched the idea in the first place- I'm looking for a *recommendation(s)*

I'm buying a psp soon, so are there any good shooting games? First person or third person, doesn't matter.

I'll also probably want to pick up a PSP game that lasts reasonably long- like an rpg or action/adventure, if anyone knows of any good ones.

I can't speak for the system as I don't own a PSP but I can narrow it down to some franchises.

  1. Killzone: Liberations
  2. Resistance: Retribution
  3. Socom US Navy Seals: Fireteam Bravo (2006) and 2 (2007)
  4. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (2006) and Logan's Shadow (2007)
That's about it as far as the shooters go, I'd say.

Yeah, Lt, it was your idea, and thanks for the great suggestion!

Anyway, apart from the games Mike has listed, I think MoH: Heroes and Heroes 2 are decent games as well, apart from a few canera and conrtrol issues. Other than these, the PSP doesn't really have many other good shooters.

Oh, I see how this works now...

I originally thought this was going to be a locked thread with one post displaying this year's best games that the GRU council would recommend. My bad.

Under the top DS games you have Professor Layton and the Curios Village. It should be Curious.

EDIT: I would also like to point out that Mass Effect 2's box art is awful.

PSP is a terrible system for shooters. If you must play some then I would second Syphon Filter and SOCOM. I haven't played Killzone Liberation yet and probably won't. Shooters on PSP suck. Stick with RPG's and action games. Some of those I would recommend:

- Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth if you didn't play it on PS1

- Star Ocean 1 and 2 again if you didn't already play them

I should note that I really like Tri Ace so those two recs might not be great if that company's work doesn't appeal to you.

Let's see. I didn't like God of War but others did. It isn't that long though, only like 5 or so hours. If you like strategy RPG's, I'm currently playing Jeanne D'Arc. It's great fun. Not crazy hard like Fire Emblem. You don't lose a soldier forever when they die, and most levels so far only took a couple of tries to beat, although I'm sure it will get harder as I go along. Let's see. What else. Honestly it isn't the greatest system. I played a demo of Motorstorm Arctic Edge, which was okay but not as good as the console games. Daxter was pretty cool if you like Jak and Daxter games. I haven't played Killzone Liberation but I hear good things about it. Locoroco I also liked quite a bit. Plenty of value in that game. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of the system.

yeah- I'm definitely gonna have trouble adapting to handhelds, but I'm just not taking my console to college next year since it's too much of a hassle and will probably end up stolen before end of first semester.

I won't be playing games much at all- but it's always good to have a way to chill without having to stay up to 3 AM at parties.

In which case- I may consider getting a DS, may be cheaper. But I'm a FPS player at heart- and it's thats the hardest part about giving up console gaming.

True, the PSP doesn't have exceptionally good shooters, It has SOME, though, which aren't exactly ground-breaking, but are good enough, like Resistance: Retribution, or Killzone: Liberation or the Syphon Filter games. RPGs aren't the PSP's strong department either. Apart from Crisis Core, I didn't like any RPG on the PSP, except for maybe Star Ocean. God of War was really cool, but it lasted me only like 3 hours or so, which is a complete wastage of money. You could rent that, I suppose...

Though one should own at least one of the GTA games if one owns a PSP, preferably Vice City Stories, as it has a lot of stuff that can be done in it, and one can clock in more than fifty hours playing it.

Apart from those, games like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Burnout are what I would recommend, as they have great replay value, and you NEED games like those for the PSP, or else it'll be gathering dust in some dark, dingy corner.

You SHOULD get the DS. Not only does it have one of the greatest libraries I've seen on ANY system ever, it also has a great FPS lineup. It has titles like Metroid Prime: Hunters, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized, Call of Duty: World at War, Moon, Dimentium, Dimentium II and many others, that control really well.

DS would be the right choice asccording to me. The PSP doesn't emulate the console experience rather well anyway. The DS, though, is really fun to play, it has great shooters, and its overall library is great as well.
