JAPAN- Gunpei Yokoi, original creator of the Gameboy and Metroid series, died yesterday, October 4, 1997, in a car accident. He was riding in a car driven by Etsuo Kiso, a businessman for Nintendo. While driving,Kiso and Yokoi pulled up, and were examining a minor car accident, where two automobiles, a car and a truck were hit. While examining, two cars rammed into the broken down car from either side, crushing Yokoi. Yokoi was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead two hours later. Kiso suffered two badly broken bones and severe whiplash.
Yokoi was the creator of many of Nintendo's greatest hits, such as Metroid, Kid Icarus, Game & Watch. Creator of Nintendo's greatest sucess the Gameboy selling 118 million units worldwide with home to the best selling game of all time; Pokemon Red/Blue/Green, and Nintendo's biggest failure, the Virtual Boy, which failed to even break one million units sold.
