A new breed of Spiderman

User Rating: 9.5 | Ultimate Spider-Man PC
1. Gameplay – Well, to start off I really don't know how many of you guys know about the Ultimate Spiderman universe, but it is totally different from the general one we know about. We have a younger spunkier Peter Parker, going to college. He is the boyfriend of Mary Jane Watson, who knows his secret identity. The New York City isn't much different, though the various villains are different from their normal counterparts. The gameplay is pretty much linear. You play as Spiderman and Venom alternately. When playing as Spiderman you are required to complete a certain number of city events – including defeating gangs of criminals, reaching a series of checkpoints in the stipulated amount of time, etc. Once you have completed enough of these events, you will be allowed to proceed in the game story line, though it is equally possible for you to ignore the main quests and keep completing other city events. You'll earn health when you defeat a foe or complete a mission. When playing as Venom, you are devoid of your capability to swing. You are however capable of performing astonishingly high "super" jumps. You can also pull yourself towards any direction at a tremendous speed using a whip made out of your suit. The combat effectiveness of the Venom suit can be fully exploited while playing as Venom. You can whip out at enemies, catch and throw them, even snap them into two. To regain health, you need to consume enemies sucking them dry. You can't do that on heroes though, they tend to break free. After you have beaten the game, you can freely switch between the two characters – Spiderman and Venom, wherein Venom can also finish quite a few of time trap races. Also, when playing as Spiderman it should be noted that unlike other games, where Spiderman could simply swing from the sky or Spiderman had a few pew-made web spots from where to swing, in this game Spiderman can swing only in the vicinity of tall buildings. When the buildings are absent or when they are not tall enough, Spidey will just have to zip his way.

2. Story – The story starts off with a recap of the events preceding the game. It is shown that Peter Parker and Eddie Brock Sr. were research partners trying to create a super powerful symbiotic suit. In their endeavor they created the Venom suit. What happened to them remained a mystery except the fact that they were all killed in a plane crash. Years later, Peter has become friends with Eddie Brock Jr. and has kept his identity as Spiderman a secret from him. Soon enough, Peter manages to break through and steal a sample of the Venom suit, transforming him into the Black Symbiotic Spiderman. Peter soon realizes the great price he has to pay for the power provided by the suit and so he parts with it. In the meantime Eddie comes to learn of Peter's identity and is angry at him for keeping it a secret from him. So he comes upon the symbiotic suit and transforms into Venom. The game starts off with Peter facing off Venom in the college campus, where he fights Venom and Venom is presumably killed by a downed power line. 3 months later, Peter has forgotten all about the incident and is spending his college life with sweetheart Mary Jane Watson. He fights off Shocker and races the Human Torch. Meanwhile Eddie is shown to be very much alive as Venom and he feeds on innocent bystanders to regain his health. He soon proves his strength by beating the pulp out of Wolverine at a local bar. Spiderman is then shown to be battling Rhino when he senses his Spider sense going haywire and notices Venom. That very night, Silver Sable tries to capture Venom but the latter escapes. Then again when Peter visits the Art museum he again gets headaches he had when he saw Venom. After a brief fight with Venom, the latter is captured by Silver Sable. Eddie is then transported to Bolivar Trask and Adrian Toomes who convince Eddie to test the suit as they knew Eddie and Peter's parents. Soon enough, Venom battles Electro. When Spiderman interferes and is knocked out, Electro tries to kill him while Venom prevents him from doing so. In the process he ends up defeating Electro. But as Venom moves to kill Spiderman, SHIELD interferes and captures Eddie. Eddie returns to Trask, where he reveals to Sable that Peter is Spiderman. Meanwhile, a mercenary named Beetle attacks New York Prison and frees Green Goblin. Spiderman chases Beetle but loses him. On inquiring other people, he comes to know that the Beetle made it off to the Latverian embassy. When Nick Fury asks him not to pursue him into the embassy, Spiderman decides to do the opposite, just as Nick had planned. On reaching there, Spiderman battles and defeats Green Goblin. At the same time, Beetle is tasked with bringing a sample of the Venom suit. But Venom eventually defeats the Beetle. Following this Sable is given the task of capturing Peter, and she obliges by tranquilizing him. However, atop Queensboro Bridge, Peter regains consciousness and battles first Sable and then Venom as Spiderman. However, just as Spiderman defeats Venom, the tranquilizer takes effect and both Spiderman and Venom are left unconscious on the bridge to the mercy of Silver Sable. Eddie wakes up to the screams of Peter as Toomes injects him with a modified version of the suit, transforming him into Carnage. Venom eventually absorbs Carnage and spits out Spiderman and in the process gains full control over the suit. Trask and Peter face off where Trask gives the files on Peter's parents to him. But almost instantly Venom attacks the duo and Trask snatches the files back and runs off to a helicopter. Venom tries to kill Trask but is stopped by Spiderman. SHIELD agents arrive soon enough but Venom escapes and Trask is imprisoned by them. Peter soon finds out from the files that Eddie Brock Sr. tried on the Venom suit in the plane carrying Peter and Eddie's parents. As a result, he lost control and started wrecking the planes which eventually led it to crash down. There were only 3 witnesses who survived the crash – one being Peter's mother, who eventually died in the ambulance. Peter tells Fury that Eddie has to see the files, but Fury informs him that Venom has escaped. Soon it shows Trask in a prison, when Eddie comes to give him a visit. Eddie is furious that after all that Trask did to him all he got was a nominal sentence. Eddie proceeds to transform into Venom and kills Trask. The scene then shifts to Peter sitting with Mary on top of a warehouse. Peter tells her that he doesn't know whether he is afraid of Eddie or for him, but he knows that Eddie is out there somewhere. Mary replies that while Eddie is not there at the moment, she was and proceeds to hug Peter. Peter responds by putting his arm around her. The final cutscene shows Eddie on the corner of a tall building watching the two with his suit wide open. The suit then envelops him completely as Venom roars and jumps off the building.

3. Graphics – The graphics of the game are pretty quirky. The game is akin to comic book scenery, with the buildings and characters having the rough comic look. As such, the graphics only adds more appeal to the game. The requirements are not too high, whilst giving a more than decent graphics performance.

4. Sound and Music – The music is that of a new age Spiderman. Though given the fact that the old tune had a certain charm to it, the fact that even this game's music is equally good is undeniable. The sound effects are kept to a minimal and yet are perfect. The voice acting is terrific. Just like out of a movie.

The game is a sure shot buy for any Spiderman fan. I would even recommend it to those who are not a huge fan of the franchise because as far as the game is concerned, you'll never get a chance to complain.
