User Rating: 7.7 | True Crime: Streets of LA GC
When I purchased this game, I wanted so badly for it to be something comparable to Grand Theft Auto. I really really wanted this game to be something that I just couldn't put down. I understood that True Crime was not going to take the place of Grand Theft Auto, and that I should just enjoy it for what it is. The problem is that every time I try to sit and enjoy the game, I run into a handful of problems that really keep me from enjoying the game. Many times while cruising the streets, the game would experience a tremendous slow down and essentially freeze up. So to make sure that my progress was saved, I would have to find some way to angle the camera so that the processor wouldn't have to process as much information. I would then be able to pause the game and quit and reset my machine. The first time, I just chalked it up to some rare bug. But the next four times made me extremely frustrated with the game. There is a good cop/bad cop meter, which goes up or down based on how many people you either arrest or kill. So when I first started, I was trying to do the right thing (arrest people, disable them...) But as soon as you flash your badge, some people who weren't even in the fight wanna come and beat the hell out of you. I've arrived on the scene where the criminal will have a gun and is shooting. It can be very difficult to neutralize a criminal who has a machine gun and is aiming right for you while you try to shoot him in the arm with your little pistol. Sometimes, I've been pulled out of my car and shot to death by these same criminals. Once you're pulled out of the car, it's basically all over, cause you can be shot while on the ground with no hope of escape. There are also times when you shoot a criminal's car all to hell. He then hops out and runs away, so you give chase. He then begins to take someone else's car and drive away and as you try to continue to chase him, some random car just smashes the hell out of you. I can understand why a player would just want to kill anything that is doing wrong. cause it solves so many more problems than having to politely disable someone. The game offers a lot. Maybe too much. Although you can roam freely around the city, don't mistake this game for any Grand Theft Auto game. Some of the fight sequences are pretty sweet, as you can bash the enemy through a lot of breakables (tables, chairs, walls). I guess I would say rent it and give it a try to make sure you aren't disappointed. Oh, and Nick's driving ability sucks until you get it upgraded, so when you're chasing random people in cars, expect to kill a few random people who just don't know which way to dive when you're barreling down the sidewalk trying to regain control of the car.
