User Rating: 9.5 | Transformers: War for Cybertron PS3
How did Gamespot give this a 6.5? Transformers war for Cybertron has got to be the best Transformers game to date, even better then the Ps2 game based on the newer cartoons.
Basically it's a prequel of everything that happened leading up to the G1 series, which is a good thing, as you get to play the older iterations of Optimus, Megatron and co, albeit, in their Cybertronian form. The story is great and the dialogue is constant throughout the levels, which really make you feel immersed in what could easily be a great Transformers animated movie. There are 10 chapters: 5 for the Decepticon campaign and 5 for the Autobots, each with roughly 9 - 10 sub-chapters. Battles can go from claustrophobic rooms and corridors, to wide open arenas and outer-space, really letting you use the Transformers transforming abilities to their fullest.
Each chapter let's you choose between 3 different Transformers and there are roughly 4 different classes. Scouts, Leaders, Scientists and Soldiers, each with their own characteristics. A few chapters are exclusive to arial missions, which change the pace nicely. The end of every chapter has a boss fight, that really proves to be challenging, especially on hard mode.
The game utilises the (surprise, surprise) unreal engine 3, which gives this title some great, detailed graphics, allowing it to run at a more than acceptable framerate that never feels choppy, even when there are waves and hordes of enemies attacking from every corner of the level. Some critics have stated that the levels and designs all look the same, but this is an unfair assumption, as High Moon Studios have gone to great lengths to do otherwise with the source material, and it shows. It's not like your going to stick a rain forest or snowy mountains on a frikin metal world, are you? it looks great, beleive me.
The controls are extremely intuitive and responsive and transforming is a delight to do and will get you out of more than a few scrapes, plus it's just plain fun and that is the point of a Transformers game, right?
The sound effects are exccelent and transforming sounds as it should. peter Cullen is back to voice Optimus Prime (don't know why he didn't voice Ironhide too as he used to, but oh, well) but everyone else, although not the original voices, more than make up for it and are just as good.
There are a couple of things that might not stand so well with die-hard fans of the series as High Moon have taken a few liberties with the storyline and a few of the Transformers, like how when Soundwave is a playable character he turns into a Cybertronian car, but hey, who cares, it doesn't ruin the game in anyway.
The 2 main campaigns are playable with 2 other freinds and are quite lengthy, but Transformers is jam-packed full of other multiplayer modes, that it lasts for ages and never gets old.
So, there you have it, a brilliant Transformers game for fans and none fans alike.
